Julia Donaldson CBE (born Julia Catherine Shields; born 16 September 1948) is an English playwright and children’s book author known for frequently collaborating with German Illustrator Axel Scheffler.

She originally wrote songs for children's television, but permanently became an author when her song "A Squash and a Squeeze" was made into a book in 1993.

Her book The Gruffalo was an immediate success, translated into more than 50 languages, sold over 10 million copies worldwide and won several awards.

Since then, she has written many other books with Scheffler.

She was Children's Laureate from 2011-13.
