Josh Boone (born April 5, 1979) is an American screenwriter, producer and director. He got his start in 2012 when he wrote and directed the indie romantic-comedy Stuck in Love, and achieved mainstream success two years later adapting John Green's popular novel The Fault in Our Stars into a movie.

Boone planned to follow up The Fault in Our Stars by sprinkling horror elements in his superhero coming-of-age film The New Mutants, but Fox, after marketing the trailer as a more straightforward horror movie, decided to schedule reshoots to make the actual movie more like it was advertised. What followed was the infamous delay that pushed New Mutants through the Disney-Fox merger all the way back to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Boone did return for additional reshoots, but not before adapting Stephen King's The Stand into a Miniseries for Paramount+ with Benjamin Cavell.

Filmography:

Tropes common to Boone's work:

  • Coming of Age Story: Seems to work with these almost exclusively. Initially envisioned The New Mutants as a coming-of-age movie "with horror elements," but things didn't quite turn out that way.
  • Executive Meddling: The amount of tampering that occurred with The New Mutants is almost legendary. Reportedly, when Boone returned to direct final reshoots, the actors had aged so noticeably that it was just distressing.
  • The Film of the Book: Has adapted two books, one by John Green and another by Stephen King.
