While Poots originally intended to study veterinary surgery, two incidents conspired to steer her towards acting. First, she started attending an improv workshop hosted by the Young Blood Theatre Company; and second, she fainted during her first work experience in veterinary surgery.
Her first acting roles were in an episode of CASUAL+Y and a non-speaking part in V for Vendetta, but her breakout role came in 28 Weeks Later. Since then, she has acted in a wide variety of movies and television series, and also modeled in advertising campaigns for Chloé and a collaboration between fashion label Marni and high street retailer H&M.
She has been in a relationship with James Norton since 2018. They got engaged in 2022.
