Eugeni Jofra i Bafalluy (1941-2001), known mononymously as Eugenio, was a Spanish comedian born in Barcelona.

He became famous for telling (or narrating, as he preferred to say) silly and/or absurd jokes with a signature style: perpetually deadpan expression with a dry, matter-of-fact delivery to match, always wearing black clothing, Sunglasses at Night, sitting on a stool, a cigarette between his fingers, and a thick Catalan accent, punctuated with the use of Catalan words gratuitously, including his classic opening line "Saben aquell que diu...?" ("You know the one that says...?").

He was at the peak of his popularity in The '80s, when recordings of his performances were sold in cassettes, but stepped off the stage in the early '90s before reemerging in the Turn of the Millennium with the live show Érase otra vez... Eugenio, shortly before passing away in 2001.

A biographical movie focusing on Eugenio's early comedy career, Saben aquell, premiered in November 2023, with David Verdaguer portraying Eugenio.

Recorded shows

  • El último de... Eugenio

Tropes associated to his work:

  • The Comically Serious: A key part of Eugenio's shtick was the contrast between the completely serious expression and tone he used to tell his jokes and how absurd the jokes themselves were. In his own words, "I only laugh when I get paid".
  • Mad Libs Catchphrase: "Saben aquell que diu...? [insert joke here]"
  • Sunglasses at Night: They were part of his signature look, even though he tended to perform in places with little lighting outside the spotlight pointing at him.
