Tropes and Trivia applying to Johnson's works:

  • Grid Puzzle: His games often include several variations, such as unscrambling a picture, a map, or a crossword. Some use irregular grids.
  • Metapuzzle: Johnson is, in fact, the Trope Namer. He coined this term in The '80s to refer to a set of puzzles that are part of an overarching puzzle or riddle which otherwise cannot be solved standalone. Fittingly, his games feature metapuzzles whose resolution is the ultimate goal.
  • No Budget: The sequel of The Fool's Errand, called The Fool and His Money, was funded by money out of Johnson's own pocket and donations from "True Believers", which goes a long way towards explaining why it took nine years for the game to be completed.invoked
  • Saved from Development Hell: He began work on The Fool and His Money in 2003. Nine years and countless delays later, the game was finally released in October 2012. Even more unbelievably, according to nearly all fans, it was still well worth all the wait.invoked
