Carl Reiner (March 20, 1922 – June 29, 2020) was an American comedian, actor, director, and screenwriter. His career spanned several decades and he is remembered for contributing to a number of the most popular comedy shows of all time, including Your Show of Shows, where he was one of the regular cast members, and The Dick Van Dyke Show, which he created and produced. He is also well known for collaborating with Mel Brooks for the comedy sketch "The 2000 Year Old Man".
As an actor, he appeared in films such as It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming, The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle, and the Ocean's Eleven series. He also directed comedy films including Where's Poppa?, Oh, God!, The Jerk, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, The Man with Two Brains, and All of Me. In his later years he could be seen guest starring on such shows as Mad About You, Ally McBeal, Boston Legal, House, M.D., Two and a Half Men, and Hot in Cleveland, and lending his voice to animated series like The Cleveland Show and Jake and the Never Land Pirates. Reiner's best known voice role is Sarmoti from Father of the Pride. For a future revival, it was suggested that pre-recorded footage of Reiner be used for Sarmoti's lines. Home Movie: The Princess Bride, where he plays The Grandfather, was his final filmed performance; he passed three days after recording his scene.
Reiner was the recipient of many accolades, including multiple Emmy Awards, a Grammy for Best Comedy Album, and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. He was also the father of actor and director Rob Reiner. Despite his advanced age, he never retired from acting and was an active user of Twitter right up until his death at 98.
