Tropes associated with her work:
- Awesome, Dear Boy: Having read The Last Temptation of Christ and actually recommending it to Martin Scorsese, when she heard he was making the movie, she begged to be able to play Mary Magdalene.
- Career Resurrection: Her BAFTA-nominated performance in Black Swan brought her back to prominence, leading to appearances in things like Insidious and Once Upon a Time.
- Dawson Casting: for Beaches, she was 40 playing Hilary from college age until her mid-30s, and even had collagen injected into her lips to look younger.
- Looping Lines: Jennifer Koenig played the Queen of Hearts in the character's first appearance in Once Upon a Time to hide the twist that she was really Cora. Barbara still provided her voice.
- The Mentor: She was mentored by Doris Day.
- Romance on the Set:
- She dated David Carradine while filming Boxcar Bertha. They had met on the set of Heaven with a Gun.
- She met and fell in love with Naveen Andrews while filming Drowning on Dry Land. They were together for ten years.
- Stage Names: Besides 'Hershey', she also acted as Barbara Seagull, in honour of a seagull that was accidentally killed during the filming of Last Summer.
- Time-Shifted Actor:
- In Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning, she plays the older version of Hannah Endicott-Douglas' title character.
- Rose McGowan plays her younger self in Once Upon a Time. "The Miller's Daughter" is the only episode they both appear in though.
- What Could Have Been:
- She and Michael Caine filmed a lengthy sex scene for Hannah and Her Sisters. While there was no nudity involved, both actors disliked it because it seemed to come out of nowhere, and were relieved when it was cut.
- She was in the running to play Alex in Fatal Attraction, as she had played a similar role in The Natural. It went to Glenn Close, who ironically played her romantic rival in The Natural.
- She also turned down the role of Catherine Tromell in Basic Instinct, which went on to become the Star-Making Role for Sharon Stone.
