Comic Strip / Lucy and Sophie Say Goodbye

Go To

Lucy and Sophie Say Goodbye is a 1900s comic strip published in The Chicago Tribune. It has an unknown artist and is speculated to have been published circa 1905.

Each strip follows a specific formula: Lucy and Sophie are two women who have lengthy "goodbye"s that end in a kiss. Their exchanges are so lengthy that comedic things often occur. Lucy and Sophie are so caught up in each other that they ignore any chaos surrounding them.

This comic provides examples of:

  • Ambiguously Gay: It's unclear if Lucy and Sophie are Platonic Kissing or if they're Sickening Sweethearts.
  • Digging to China: In one strip, a workman tries to warn the two woman that they are standing above a stick of dynamite with a lit fuse. After the explosion goes off, the workman finds himself lying at the bottom of a hole being greeted by a polite Chinaman.
  • Platonic Kissing: One interpretation of the strip is that Lucy and Sophie are two friends kissing each other goodbye.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: Lucy and Sophie are so caught up in one another and kissing one another that they are oblivious to their surroundings.
  • Slapstick: Both women end up blown up in more than one strip.
