Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut! is a 1982 story arc written by Roger Stern with art by John Romita Jr. It spans from The Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #229–230.
When Black Tom Cassidy sends the Juggernaut to kidnap Madame Web in the hopes that her psychic abilities can help them defeat the X-Men, Spider-Man ends up directly in his path and must find a way to stop the Juggernaut from reaching his objective.
The story arc would get a sequel in The Gauntlet arc, Something Can Stop the Juggernaut!.
Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut! provides examples of:
- And I Must Scream: At the end of The Amazing Spider-Man #230, the Juggernaut is buried in tons of concrete.
- Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: Spider-Man's second fight with the Juggernaut goes like this. Struggling to find a way to hurt him, Spidey tries ramming a tanker truck into him only to find it just made him angry. Ultimately Spider-Man manages to win the fight by tricking Juggernaut into a load of cement, but due to how Juggernaut's powers work (he doesn't need to eat, drink, sleep, or even breathe), Juggy eventually just dug his way out. Keeping the latter part of the trope from being played straight, Spidey's confrontations with the Juggernaut after that were rare and handled much differently; in the most recent one, Spidey simply gave him what he wanted so he'd go away.
- The Call Knows Where You Live: Madame Web calls both Doctor Strange and the Daily Bugle to contact Peter.
- Car Fu: Spider-Man rams a big rig filled with gas into the Juggernaut. It Still didn't faze him one bit.
- CPR: Clean, Pretty, Reliable: Deconstructed, as after the villain yanks Madame Webb from her life support device, Spidey uses rescue breathing on her until the paramedics come, and she is clearly much worse for wear once she is stabilized, taking months to recover. (Although she doesn't suffer the brain damage the doctor feared she would.)
- The Determinator: Spidey tries everything he can to stop the Juggernaut, but the Juggernaut keeps walking through everything he has without even flinching. He eventually succeeds by steering him into a recently poured foundation of wet cement, where his own weight pulls him under like quicksand! Oh, the Juggernaut eventually breaks free, but not until long after the battle is over.
- Easy Amnesia: Madame Web is left with amnesia after being removed from her life support chair by the Juggernaut.
- The Heavy: Juggernaut is sent by Black Tom Cassidy to capture Madame Web by finesse.
- Implacable Man: The Juggernaut. He shakes off everything Spider-Man throws at him and just keeps going in a straight line towards Madame Web.
- More Dakka: As proof of how tough the Juggernaut is, a SWAT team set a roadblock for the villain on a city street, and when he refused to halt, opened fire with machine gun fire that the narration called "enough to reduce a house to splinters". But it didn't even slow him down.
- The Needless: Juggernaut states that he doesn't require air, which is good when he is buried under cement.
- No "Police" Option: Spider-Man is the first to engage Juggernaut because he happens to be in the area when the villain makes landfall (thanks to his psychic ally Madame Web warning him of an incoming threat). There simply wasn't time for Spidey to contact the police (not that they'd listen to him anyway). The police later muster their forces to try to stop Juggernaut after Spidey fails and retreats to find help. Despite the presence of their special anti-superhuman unit Code Blue, Juggernaut is unsurprisingly so far out of their league that he's barely slowed down. In the second part of the story, the police opt to only observe the Juggernaut as he makes his way to the Hudson River to leave since they recognize there's not really much they can do to stop him and are also focusing on rescue operations (including Madame Web, whose life support system was damaged by Juggernaut). A vengeful Spider-Man has other ideas and keeps going after Juggernaut to stop him from harming anyone else, resorting to tactics he'd never use against his own Rogues Gallery because they'd be fatal. When Spidey finally manages to bring Juggernaut down by burying him alive in a construction site, the police are shown monitoring the site to make sure he's down for good.
- Out of the Inferno: Spider-Man throws a fuel tanker right into the Juggernaut, causing a massive explosion. Spider-Man is actually concerned that he killed the Juggernaut until ...
- Rogues' Gallery Transplant: The Juggernaut is one of the X-Men's most iconic and recurring adversaries, but quite possibly the most famous comic book story he has ever been is this one, where he tangled with Spider-Man. The story was meant to establish Spidey as the ultimate underdog, where the Juggernaut, a character Spidey normally never has to deal with and far outside his weight class, is causing trouble and Spider-Man is the only one there who can stop him.
- Taught by Experience: Juggernaut tells Spider-Man that he learned from all the times when he was beaten by getting his helmet yanked off, so he welded it on with a laser torch.
- Villainous Friendship: Juggernaut and Black Tom Cassidy are genuinely good friends, so Tom confidently waited for his friend to reemerge... and then started getting concerned when he didn't (because Juggernaut was trapped under tons of concrete). He maintained a vigil on his yacht until he was finally forced to leave for his own safety.
- Walk, Don't Swim: The Juggernaut gets impatient while sailing to New York and just jumps off the boat and walks directly there.
- The Worf Barrage: Spidey tries increasingly destructive methods to stagger the unstoppable X-Men foe, culminating with blowing up a tanker truck of gasoline. Juggernaut is unharmed, and now on fire.
- You Can't Thwart Stage One: Spider-Man fails to stop the Juggernaut from reaching Madame Web.
