"It's never-ending. You've always known that. We've always known that. But lately, I can tell... that you feel it."
Lois Lane

Justice League: Last Ride is a seven-issue DC Comics mini-series written by Chip Zdarsky, with art by Miguel Mendonça. It's an Alternate Universe story of the Justice League at a moment when they have broken apart due to tragedy.

Superman has been having a tough time lately. Day after day, there is always another tragedy, another crisis that he has to avert or else people will die. Even when he is with his wife, Lois, he is plagued by nightmares. And then he gets an alert for an emergency meeting of the Justice League on their Watchtower on the moon. Things are tense, especially between Superman and Batman, until John Stewart shows up, revealing that the Green Lantern Corps has finally captured the most wanted man in the universe, the man who killed the New Gods: Lobo.

Hal Jordan insists that the Justice League must hold him in custody until the United Planets try him, but there are plenty of people who are after Lobo in order to kill him. Can the League come together again in order to keep Lobo safe when not even Superman and Batman can agree on things?

Because the last time there was a crisis, the Martian Manhunter died.

Tropes in Justice League: Last Ride:

  • Alternate Universe:
    • In this universe, the Justice League broke up after a crisis in which the Martian Manhunter died. There are other differences, too, like the Green Lantern Corps are rebuilding after the Corps fell and Hal Jordan appears to be wearing a version of his Parallax armor, although he's not evil. Oh and Lobo killed all of the New Gods.
    • Hal was possessed by Darkseid.
  • Apocalypse How: Planetary version for both Apokolips and New Genesis: Lobo killed everyone on both planets. The "how" part hasn't been revealed yet.
  • Balance of Power: With the Corps still rebuilding, the United Planets are the ones in charge of the safety of the galaxy. But Hal wants to show that the Justice League and Earth can keep Lobo safe until trial, so he can leverage making Earth's moon the new headquarters of the Green Lantern Corps.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: After the last crisis, where J'onn died, the Justice League disbanded. The Flash isn't even sure if Superman and Batman will show up, although Wonder Woman says that "if people are in danger," they will show up.
  • Catapult Nightmare: Superman has one where Metropolis is shaking apart and he's stuck holding up the Daily Planet's planet, but it's made of Kryptonite and everyone is dying around him.
  • Headbutting Heroes: The death of Martian Manhunter has caused a rift between Superman and Batman. Superman outright states that he blames Batman for his death, but he still wants Batman's help:
Superman: I tried! I did my best! It was you who killed J'onn! It was you who sent our friend to his death! You who—I'm so tired, Bruce... I'm tired of the fight. Fighting everything... including friends. Please, just this once... can you put aside your—your damned obstinance and just... help us?
  • Heroic Sacrifice: How the Martian Manhunter died, he went into Apokolips's core to shut down its energy supply, despite knowing his weakness to fire would kill him.
  • Logical Weakness: Mongul is a powerful Lightning Bruiser like Superman who's a serious threat to Wonder Woman and Green Lantern in a fight. However, unlike Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern, he cannot fly under his own power and needed a jet pack to fight them in space. Cue Wonder Woman destroying his jetpack and kicking Mongul back, sending him helplessly drifting through the cold void of space, with Mongul being unable to get back under his own power to retaliate against them.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Lobo. He killed every single New God.
  • Putting the Band Back Together: The first issue has John Stewart call the Justice League together again to keep Lobo safe, after their last mission resulted in the Breaking the Fellowship due to Martian Manhunter's death.
  • Save the Villain: A variation: the Justice League has to make sure that Lobo is safe from all of his enemies until he's tried by the United Planets. Batman thinks he knows the perfect place, where nobody would think to find him: the empty ruins of Apokolips.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Superman outright states that he blames J'onn's death on Batman. Batman did something that resulted in the Martian Manhunter dying. That "something" was not stopping J'onn's Heroic Sacrifice, which involved going to Apokolips's energy core to shut it down and save the world, even though Superman himself was preoccupied with Darkseid.
