The Amazing-Man is a Superhero from The Golden Age of Comic Books, created by Bill Everett and published by Centaur in Amazing-Man Comics #5-26 and Stars and Stripes Comics #2-6.

In 1914, a boy named John Aman was orphaned and subsequently taken in by the Tibetan Council of Seven. Spending the intervening years training under them, Aman gained Super-Strength, invulnerability, and the ability to turn into green mist. Come the 1930's, Aman has become a man and sets out to make his fortune battling evil.

Amazing-Man has been published by other creators, appearing in comics such as Malibu Comics' Protectors and Project Superpowers, along with inspiring characters like Iron Fist. This page is for his Golden Age incarnation.


This comic contains examples of:

  • Arch-Enemy: The Great Question, one of Aman's mentors who seeks to control him for evil ends.
  • Big Bad: The Great Question.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Amazing-Man Comics #6 initially focuses on the Big Boss kidnapping a girl for ransom, until the Great Question possesses Aman to kill him and take over the scheme. Eventually, Aman breaks free of the Question's control and defeats the rest of the gang.
  • Disney Villain Death: In Amazing-Man Comics #5, train saboteur Uhlin Crater throws himself off a bridge to avoid capture.
  • Mighty Whitey: The Tibetan monks decide a random white orphan is the best candidate for their training, explicitly because he has "superb physical structure."
  • Omniglot: The monks taught Aman every language known to man.
  • Outlaw Couple: Two of the kidnappers in Amazing-Man Comics #6 are husband and wife. Eventually Aman takes the wife hostage to make the husband order the remaining baddies to stand down.

  • Ramp Jump: In Amazing-Man Comics #5, Aman jumps a train over a wrecked bridge.
  • Starter Villain: Uhlin Crater, a saboteur wrecking trains for the insurance money, who throws himself off a bridge at the end of the issue.
  • Super Smoke: Aman can turn invisible, but a green mist takes his place. He uses this to frighten his enemies.
  • Track Trouble: The villains of Amazing-Man Comics #5 are sabotaging trains by tampering with their tracks. As it turns out, it's the head of the company, who's destroying the trains for the insurance money.
  • With My Hands Tied: One of Aman's tests is to defeat a cobra with his hands tied behind his back. He catches it in his mouth.
