“The Neighborhood have good guys too, therefore, we all shall get along together! This is who we are, The Tamakoma Branch!”

Defense Organization—Border's Tamakoma Branch is the founding central, and predecessor of the current Border organization.

Since the loss of over half of their founding members from a Neighborhood military support mission, surviving founding member, Masamune Kido took command and reformed Border to it's current state. Two other surviving founding members, Masafumi Shinoda, and Ryoji Kiriyama moved over to Kido's system to help nurture the new Border organization.

The rest of the surviving founding members, including Chief Takumi Rindō, Yuri, Reiji, Jin, and Konami, stayed behind within the the founding headquarters, now as a meek local branch of the reformed Border, to nurture it as a major division to keep Border's founding philosophy of befriending Neighbors with positive, and beneficial cross-cultural affairs alive.

Members of Border's Tamakoma Branch uses the founding logo of Border as their division emblem.

In General

  • The Ace: Due to owning the most amount of breaker-power properties of all Border, Tamakoma agents are considered the "Superweapons" of Border, and can only be dispatched to missions by order of Chief Rindō, and relayed through Self-Defense Commander Shinoda.
  • All-Loving Hero: Agents who signs up with Tamakoma comes with the requirements of having an open mind about Neighbors, vast curiosity in Neighborhood cultures and knowledge, and the heart to reach out, befriend, and help Neighbors.
  • Befriending the Enemy / Interspecies Friendship: The Tamakoma Branch is the sole division of Border to firmly support Neighbor outreach, with it's members being the first to jump out to defend non-threatening Neighbors from Border's persecution; fending for the best possible interests between Neighbors and Earthlings.
  • Custom Uniform: Of the entire Border organization, the Tamakoma Branch is the sole division to hold the rights to fully customized weapons, Trigger outfits, and emblem colors; due to having members who are Neighbor natives who brought over their Trion technologies to Earth, all of Tamakoma’s properties are breaker powers to the Border organization at large. And because of this, Tamakoma-1 agents, who should be A-ranks in Border’s database, are officially not counted in rank by Border regulation, nor are allowed to compete in any central Border’s competitions.
  • Living Legend: As a division with the history as the founding HQ of Border, being an agent representing Tamakoma Branch is considered an honor to savvy Border agents.
  • Loophole Abuse: Tamakoma often needs to wiggle through Border regulations to protect Neighbors seeking asylum underneath the public nose.
    • Jin struck the deal of giving up his Black Trigger, and S-Rank status in exchange for Yūma's employment.
  • Right Under Their Noses:
    • The way Tamakoma strikes alliances with Neighbors are usually on Mikado City soils under broad daylight. Such as Tamakoma representatives casually meets up with Galopoula representatives at a park to form their alliance without central Border’s knowledge.
    • Due to most Border agents are unaware Hyuse was one of the Aftokrator invaders, Hyuse needs to hide his Aftokrator horns by wearing his Trion Body at all times aside from resting. When it comes to the problem of sleeping over with his shuffle team through the Expedition Selection Exam, he needs to come up with reasons to persuade his teammates to let him sleep in the sole single bedroom within their simulation room.

Tamakoma-1

Formally named as Tamakoma 1st Squad, this was the only known squad of Tamakoma Branch prior to the recruitment of Osamu, Yūma and Chika. The squad’s task is to lend combat, and agent leadership aid to Border’s most complex of missions, usually only taking orders from Tamakoma Chief, Rindō.

Due to Border restrictions, members of Tamakoma-1 are forbidden to partake in squad nor solo competitions, but are allowed to serve as A-Rank judges and Combat Commentators for Border’s various examinations.

     In General
  • Establishing Character Moment: The introduction of the initial Tamakoma-2 trio to Tamakoma-1 members presented the rituals of Tamakoma-1 interaction—the falsifier, the believer, the follow-up falsifier, and the truth revealer.
  • Lightning Bruiser:
    • Karasuma, and Jin are fast and powerful Attackers who can also tank with their use of both Shield, and Escudo.
    • With the help of custom Trigger, Full Arms, Reiji can pull off Border’s grandest Bullet Hell by firing with 4 rifles, and use 2 Raygust-grade shields to protect himself all on the same time.

Years in Border Service: 4½-5 years (Old Border Generation)
Age: 21
Solo Ranking: All-Rounder 1st Place
Primary Mentor: Haruaki Azuma (B006)
Primary Disciples: Kyōsuke Karasuma (since prior to his transfer to Tamakoma), Chika Amatori (Tamakoma-2)

Trigger Equipments
Main: Raygust | Thruster (Raygust built-in) | Shield | Meteor | Asteroid: Minigun Ver. | Bagworm |—|
Sub: Raygust | Thruster (Raygust built-in) | Shield | Asteroid: Assault Rifle Ver. | Hound: Assault Rifle Ver. | Spider | Full Arms (Tamakoma Experimental Custom)

The Captain of Tamakoma-1, and the sole Perfect All-Rounder in Border. Chika's mentor. Thanks to his status and affiliation with Tamakoma, Reiji's the sole agent of Border who's allowed to hold 14 slots of Trigger equipment for combat.
  • The Ace: One of Border's best agents overall (and the sole perfect All-Rounder), leader of what Shinoda considers Border's strongest team, strong outside of a trion body as well, and to top it all off, he's good at cooking and various other crafts.
  • The Big Guy: Easily one of the most beefy agents of Border.
  • The Confidant: He and Usami are the two people Chika confesses her real reason for being unable to shoot to.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Played for Laughs, when Yotaro declares Yuri to be his other bride (aside from Chika). Reiji is not amused.
  • Crush Blush: While being around Rindo Yuri. He seems to lose all composure with her.
  • Gatling Good: An unnamed Minigun Trigger.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: During the Second Invasion, courtesy of Viza.
  • Heroic Build: Coming from a firefighting household, Reiji's body is ripe to perform civilian rescue and military defense.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Subverted. Having to Bail-Out is fine, but he believes that one should do their utmost to survive, as is the mindset he inherited from his late father, a rescue worker. If you succeed in saving a life but die in the attempt, then rescue failed.
  • Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: With Chika, as is lampshaded when asked who thought that'd be a good combination.
  • In-Universe Nickname: "Composed Beefcake".
  • Life-or-Limb Decision: Doesn't hesitate to slice off his Trion Body arm after Hyuse attaches magnets to it, earning him some respect.
  • The Mentor: For Chika, in sniping. He was also Karasuma's.
  • Multiarmed And Dangerous: Reiji's Tamakoma custom Trigger weapon, Full Arms is a backpack that holds 2 firearms for him to install on his shoulders to shoot, and 2 Raygust-grade shields to protect his blind spots.
  • Nerves of Steel: Always composed no matter the situation, and can therefore make snap judgments with ease, as his fight against Viza and Hyuse best showcases.
  • Not So Stoic: When it comes to Yuri.
  • Only Sane Man: Between him, Karasuma, and Konami.
  • Real Men Cook: The best cook among Tamakoma, with his signature dish involving lots of meat.
  • Real Men Wear Pink: Or rather, cook and do handicrafts (he's responsible for Yotaro's helmet).
  • The Reliable One: He can be counted on to carry out his duty, no matter what it is. This makes him one of the people Jin most often discusses his secret strategies with, as he isn't blinded by pride like Konami and Karasuma can be.
  • Secret-Keeper: He knows the truth behind Hatohara's so-called leaving Border, and is just about the only one who does without actually being related to the incident.
  • Shirtless Scene: Wears a speedo in episode 56.
  • The Stoic: He remains calm even when firing a gatling gun or after being cut in half!
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Stoic and can be stiff with expressing comfort, but very dere when around Yuri, his crush.
  • Tough Love: Tends to express this as he doesn't believe in spoiling his pupils, in comparison to Konami or Karasuma. At one point, he stops the latter from giving tips to Tamakoma-2, believing that that info is something they should work to obtain on their own.

Rank Overqualified, Attacker
Emblem Color: Candy Red
Years in Border Service: 4½-5 years (Old Border Generation)
Age: 17
Education: Seirin Girl’s Academy
Solo Ranking: Attacker 3rd Place
Primary Mentor: Tamakoma Branch
Primary Disciple: Yūma Kuga (Tamakoma-2)
Relatives in Border Service: Jun Arashiyama (A05, First Cousin)
Voiced by: Rie Kugimiya

Trigger Equipments
Main: Sōgetsu (Tamakoma Custom) | Meteor | Shield | Connector (Tamakoma Experimental Custom)
Sub: Sōgetsu (Tamakoma Custom) | Meteor | Shield | Bagworm

Border's most veteran of all active combat agents. Yuma's mentor.
  • Action Girl: One of the most skilled agents in all of Border.
  • Bad Liar: Mainly due to being an open book with a tendency towards Saying Too Much.
  • Combat Commentator: For the Ninomiya Squad vs. Yuba Squad vs. Ikoma Squad vs. Tamakoma-2 match.
  • Cool Big Sis: Not to Usami's extent, but she plays this role to Tamakoma-2. She's especially protective of Chika and quick to call out Osamu and co. if she thinks they're not treating her well.
  • Ditzy Genius: Very good at fighting and unlike, say, Tachikawa or Yoneya, she gets good grades at school, but also a bit airheaded and more than a little gullible.
  • Double Weapon: Konami’s primary weapon, Sōgetsu (Double Moon) are a pair of axe-shaped Trion blades to which the ends of the polearms can freely connect with each other into one stick via the Connector Trigger, and also provide the allowance to turn either blades on or off; allowing Konami to wield her weapon in versatile styles with flexible range.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Tachikawa.
  • The Gadfly: Her immediate reaction to seeing Tsuji is to start teasing.
  • Glass Cannon: Konami is an Attacker who focuses on high speed and power output. Her high speed allows her to dodge powerful attacks, and can pull off the durability close to Cute Bruiser as long as she maintains her high dodge. But she still has her vulnerable aspects; which is why Reiji and Karasuma usually would stay within a certain range to reach Konami to provide high defense for her when needed.
  • Hair Wings: Part of her hair forms a wing even in her Trion form, through it doesn't serve any purpose and its just decorative.
  • Living a Double Life: For whatever reason, she doesn't want her classmates know that she's a Border combat agent, and instead pretends to be an Operator. Hence the bob hair in her Trion form and wearing green, the opposite of her favourite colour, red. But she placed red on her division emblem, signifying her true pride to be a Border agent.
    • This is most likely Konami’s way of allowing herself to live a normal human life, because she was practically raised within the Border project ever since she was 12.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Played for Laughs. Much to her dismay, she's kicked out of Tamakoma-2's strategy discussion since she's going to be a commentator for the match, when even Yotaro is allowed to sit in.
  • Man Bites Man: A comedic variant, in which she is fond of biting Osamu head when Kyosuke pranks her.
  • One-Man Army: Her Border Briefing File describes her as being worth an entire squad on her own.
  • One-Note Cook: When she's on cooking duty, the only thing she can make well is curry.
  • Power Makes Your Hair Grow: Inverted. Konami designed her Trion Body with a bob haircut.
  • Skilled, but Naive: Played with. Despite being an experienced and skilled member of Border, she'll believe in almost anything one tells her, and thus she is frequently made fun of.
  • Sore Loser: She doesn't take it well when Yuma gets a single win off of her (a single one!), and she'll have you know that she's pretty much the No. 1 Attacker no matter what anyone else says, thank you very much. (She's No. 3.)
  • Super Gullible: She believes anything other people tell her, no matter how ridiculous. This includes believing Jin when he said Osamu, Chika and Yuma were his siblings when they don't look alike at all.
  • Tsundere: She shows a few signs that she might be one.
    • She tries to cover up her shyness with strength, as shown when Kyōsuke told her Osamu had called her pretty.
    • She becomes very violent when Kyōsuke tells her he lied to her, though she discounts it on Osamu instead.

     Kyōsuke “Torimaru” Karasuma

Rank Overqualified, All-Rounder
Years in Border Service: 3 years (New Border 2nd Gen.)
Age: 16
Border Service Record: [Former Unit] Tachikawa Squad (A01)
Primary Mentor: Reiji Kizaki (Tamakoma-1)
Primary Disciple: Osamu Mikumo (Tamakoma-2)
Border Faction: Tamakoma (Shinoda oriented)
Voiced by: Jun Fukuyama

Trigger Equipments
Main: Kogetsu | Asteroid: Assault Rifle Ver. | Viper: Assault Rifle Ver. | Shield
Sub: Escudo | Geist (Tamakoma Experimental Custom) |—| Bagworm

An All-Rounder who came from the central Border system. Osamu's mentor.
  • Amicable Exes: Platonic version. In the same vein as Usami, Karasuma is an ex-Tachikawa Squad member, but shown to still be friends with them; sans their latest member Yuiga.
    • Relationships truly showed when Karasuma went the extra mile in asking Izumi to be Osamu’s official second mentor; which Izumi accepts.
  • Big Man on Campus: Both Suwa and Oki confirmed to Osamu that Karasuma is the most popular guy on Border; complete with fangirls and fanboys forming a whole “Karasuma Faction,” rumored to be capable in overthrowing the official Border factions.
  • Bishie Sparkle: When outside of combat, he usually has this around his hair.
  • Brutal Honesty: After Reiji and Konami finish bragging about their pupils, they turn to Kyosuke, who can't even pretend to having something positive to say about Osamu.
  • Clueless Chick-Magnet: Karasuma doesn't seem to realize it, but there are at least three girls on Border having Celeb Crushes on him; A05 Ai Kitora, B001 Aki Hiyami, and B011 Yoko Katori. But Karasuma may or may not be as clueless as he seems, due to monitoring the whole Shuffle Team: Suwa’s conversation of selling him off for Katori’s chance to date him in order to bring their team up; and seems completely chill to see them use this tactic.
  • The Gadfly: Frequently lies for the hell of it. Konami in particular is one of his favourite targets, since she always falls for it.
  • Informed Attribute: That he's not from a wealthy family; which Ashihara acknowledges as this in his volume profile. Though it's eventually implied a few times in story; such as the mention of his part-time jobs, and how his jacket is a hand-me-down from Jin.
  • In-Series Nickname: “Torimaru,” which is a play on the characters that make up his surname.
    • Amusingly, Hyuse calls him this as well, leading one to wonder if Hyuse even realize “Torimaru” is not Karasuma’s surname.
    • Karasuma doesn’t mind people calling him by this nickname, which is most likely why no one corrected Hyuse. Tamakoma-2 juniors cranked his nickname up to a whole new level by naming his simulation-purposed Ninomiya-spec Trion Body as “Ninomaru.”
  • In the Back: How he is defeated by Hairein and Moira.
  • No Badass to His Valet: Played for Laughs. When he calls Konami for a favor, she asks why he doesn't go to Jin, the answer being because Karasuma finds it awkward to ask this of a higher-up. We don't see Konami's reply, but presumably she reminded him that hello, she's senior to Karasuma as well—to which he responded that he respects her too, of course, but with Karasuma, you never know...
  • Not So Stoic: When he realizes Hairein was playing him for a fool. The immediate moment and the aftermath are among the few times he's openly upset.
  • Screw Destiny: He attempts this during the large-scale invasion, with mixed results. See You Can't Fight Fate.
  • Shapeshifter Weapon: Karasuma's Tamakoma custom Trigger, Geist is an Optional Trigger that allows him to channel, and alter his Trion to the assigned attributes of "Armor," "Discharge," "Mobility," "Toku," note  and "Slash" to enchance combat strength, and alter his Trion Body gear and body parts to better wield his enhancements. Due to the Trigger is still under trial, the Trigger is unstable; Karasuma's Trion Body would destroy itself in less than 5 minutes after excessive use. Thanks for the Bail-Out system, this Trigger is currently rendered as a non-deadly Deadly Upgrade. As of current, Karasuma had presented 3 types of power-up modes.
    • "Blade Shift"—The spec change to Karasuma's default Trion gradings into Armor: 2, Slash: 5, Toku: 1, Mobility: 5, and Discharge: 2. Which grants power ups to his Kogetsu, and alter his Trion Body strength to the arms and legs.
    • "Mobility Shift"—The focus boost in speed by enhancing his leg strength.
    • "Gunner Shift"—The Gunner Trigger enhancement by transforming his assault rifles into a Wave-Motion Gun attached to his right arm.
  • Shirtless Scene: In episode 56.
  • The Stoic: Just like Reiji, never loses his calm or patience.
  • Superhero Sobriquets: "Scruffy Hottie." Border agents often used this as Karasuma’s descriptive introduction of sorts to recognize him as Border’s most socially popular, and attractive agent who came from a hard-working low-income family background.
  • Sword and Gun: Karasuma is an agent who's main combat style is switching between a Kogetsu with an assault rifle.
  • You Can't Fight Fate: In the second invasion, he knows that according to Jin's Side Effect, he's doomed to lose anti-climatically and not play a part in protecting Osamu and co. Determined to overturn this, he avoids all fights until the moment arrives and tries to buy Osamu time to escape from Hairein... only to realize at the end that Hairein and Moira never lost track of Osamu, and for him to be defeated by a cheap shot. His frustration over his failure is all too visible, especially for someone who's usually The Stoic. However, it's ultimately subverted; he spreads the info he obtained during the fight, which later helps Miwa in his own fight with Hairein.
  • Younger Than They Look: He's sixteen, but compared to the others his age, he looks more like he's eighteen or older.
  • You Shall Not Pass!: He attempts this against Hairein, only to realize by the end that Hairein was actually trying to keep him away from Osamu, rather than the other way around.

Tamakoma-2

Tamakoma’s newly formed second squad made up of entirely new meats to the organization who’s goals are to become proficient in Neighborhood space voyage, and potential Neighborhood foreign affairs.

In exchange to have squad members who originate as Black Trigger-wielding Neighbors, the squad is required to compete in central Border’s competitions under heavy regulations and handicaps.

Solo Agents & Operators

     Yūichi Jin
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/t01_04.png
S-Rank -> A-Rank, Attacker
Emblem Color: Sky Blue (default emblem color)
Years in Border Service: 4½-5 years (Old Border Generation)
Age: 19
Trion Side-Effect: Future Prediction
Primary Mentor: Sōichi Mogami (Border Founder)
Voiced by: Yūichi Nakamura (Japanese), Andrew Francis (English)

Trigger Equipments
Main: Scorpion | Escudo | Shield |—|

The self-proclaimed "Elite-agent" of the Tamakoma Branch. Jin was the original developer of the Scorpion Trigger, and the former owner of "Fujin" (Wind Blade), one of three Black Triggers in all of Border. Jin also holds the Side-Effect of close-future prediction.

Even though Jin operates solo, he is officially listed under Tamakoma-1 on Border's database since his demotion back to A-Rank; which was meant to hold up a legit reason to place Hyuse under Tamakoma-2.

  • The Ace: Never anything less than confident, being immensely skilled and able to see the future to some degree.
  • Big Brother Mentor: He plays this role to Tamakoma-2, though more of a sneaky version (as they already have Tamakoma-1 as their direct mentors). He also has a bit of this with Karasuma, in comparison to Jin's relationship with Reiji, who is more of an equal to him.
  • Brought Down to Badass: Downplayed. To persuade Border to allow Yuma's enlistment, Jin gives up his ownership of Black Trigger Fujin, as well as his S-Rank status; demoting him back to an ordinary A-Rank in need to participate in solo competitions. While Jin is notably sad from parting with this weapon of high sentimental value, he knows the future is now on a brighter course.
  • Catchphrase: "That's what my side effect tells me", and "Want some rice crackers?" Both are lampshaded, with other characters repeating them at various points.
  • The Chessmaster: Partially thanks to his side effect, partially thanks to his own wits, Jin is able to see possible futures and attempt to steer events towards the most ideal one. During the large scale invasion arc, the Aftokrator even note that someone was pulling the strings the entire time.
  • The Chooser of the One:
    • Of Osamu: Though it’s plot point has not been completely revealed as of yet, but it’s strongly implied that Jin somehow persuaded Border to accept Osamu’s combat agent application in spite of Osamu’s disqualification. Because Jin at the time can see Osamu is an important key to unravel deeper mysteries of the Neighborhood.
  • Combat Clairvoyance: Jin’s Side-Effect allows him to see the immediate future, which includes most incoming attacks.
  • Cool Shades: His signature accessories.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Given that he can see the future, it's notable whenever his Side Effect fails him.
    • He's caught off-guard by Kazama's Mole Claw, though luckily for him, it doesn't cost him the fight.
    • From the looks of things, he wasn't entirely expecting Karasuma to try and Screw Destiny (likely because it directly involved Hairein and Moira, who are outside of Jin's foresight), as he's mildly surprised when Karasuma changes the future.
    • Osamu and Replica's ultimate plan of having Replica hack Aftokrator's away ship is noted to be a path Jin wouldn't have foreseen, though as it leads to a future where Osamu survives, Jin just breaks down into relieved laughter.
    • He's definitely surprised when Yotaro chases after Hyuse (apparently leading to one of the least likely futures he saw), to the point where he has to drop his current plan and go after him.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Subverted. At first, it seems like Jin doesn't recognize Osamu (whom he saved), but it's soon revealed that he does.
  • Friendly Rivalry: With Tachikawa. Though the Black Trigger Retrieval arc pits them on opposite sides, they actually get along very well. Jin notes that the most fun he has in Border is when he's fighting Tachikawa and Kazama.
  • The Gadfly: Usually with benevolence, but he seems to enjoy messing with people (e.g. randomly lying about Osamu and co. being his younger siblings).
  • Guile Hero: By effectively utilizing his side effect and his wits, he can manipulate events to achieve the best outcome he could.
    • For example, negotiating with Commander Kido to recognize Yuma as a member of Border despite the fact he is a neighbor. He did this by giving up his own Black Trigger, after he beat the people sent to kill Yuma and take Yuma's Black Trigger using it, making his own Black Trigger look more valuable. He also warned Commander Kido against escalating the conflict by telling him what would happen if he did, forcing Kido to back down. He also tells Kido that Yuma and his other juniors will be helpful for Kido's true objective, which ultimately convinces him to accept Jin's proposal and ending the conflict.
    • During the Large-Scale Invasion arc, he told his allies where to be and what to do before hand, based on what his side-effect tells him. Thanks to that, he allowed Border to achieve one of best possible outcomes, even if it wasn't THE best outcome.
  • Limited Wardrobe: Deliberate in his case. He's almost always in his trion body, and his normal clothes apparently resemble his uniform anyway, making it difficult to tell when he's not in his trion body.
  • Lovable Pervert: He gropes Sawamura's butt in one scene and his profile states that he likes girls' butts.
  • Mellow Fellow: Very chill and always goes at his own pace.
  • Missing Mom: She was killed by Neighbours. As she's his only family listed in his Border Briefing File profile, it's implied he's an orphan now.
  • The Needs of the Many: He knowingly orchestrated a future that put specifically Osamu in danger, as it benefited the greater good for Aftokrator to target Chika (and therefore Osamu by association) if it meant they left the rest of the city alone. Suffice to say he felt awful about it.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: Personal boundaries are not Jin's strong point.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: Arashiyama brings up the truth of Jin's mother to demonstrate how—despite their opposing ideologies—Jin knows how Miwa feels and isn't acting in naivety, and it's likely this commonality is part of why Jin has a degree of investment in Miwa's state of mind.
  • Razor Wind: His Black Trigger Fujin is a sword that can shoot these from all connected surfaces it touches. Though it is debatable if it really is "wind" or just extending energy blades.
  • Seers: Has the ability of close-future prediction as his Side-Effect.
  • Stepford Smiler: It's more implied than anything, but there are hints that he's not as happy as he seems.
  • Sunglasses at Night: Never seen without them, no matter the time of day.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: His Bonchiage (fried soy sauce rice crackers). He's hardly ever seen without them. Anime filler even added a scene where his room is full of boxes of the stuff.
  • Tragic Keepsake: His sunglasses are implied to be this, as they suspiciously resemble Mogami's in the Old Border photo.

     Shiori Usami

A-Rank, Operator
Years in Border Service: 3 years (New Border 2nd Gen.)
Age: 17
Border Service Record: [Former Units] Kazama Squad (A03), Tamakoma-1
Relatives in Border Service: Yōsuke Yoneya (A07, First Cousin)
Voiced by: Eri Nakao

An Operator for the Tamakoma Branch who is currently assigned to Tamakoma-2.

  • Amicable Exes: Platonic version. She used to be Kazama Squad's Operator, and while Kikuchihara snarks her as a "traitor," she's still on good terms with them; with positive actions of casually leaving her stuff behind in their squad room with unfulfilled promises to fetch them eventually, which they don't mind.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Very prone to weird antics, especially in regards to glasses.
  • The Confidant: Alongside Reiji, she's the one Chika confesses her real reason for being unable to shoot to.
  • Cool Big Sis: She tries to be this for Chika, especially given Chika's self-esteem issues.
  • Eccentric Artist: Though no one could read her whiteboard 2D sketches, her sense in 3D modelings for Trigger equipments and simulation usage are splendid.
  • The Gadfly: Like Konami, she seems to enjoy teasing Tsuji.
  • Mr. Exposition: When Osamu and co. first join Tamakoma, she does most of the explaining.
  • Ms. Fanservice: Appears in a swimsuit in episode 56 as well as the chapter 32 extra.
  • The Nicknamer: Responsible for "Scruffy Hottie" and "Composed Beefcake". Her former teammates, Utagawa and Kikuchihara, are Uttei and Kikuchi, respectively.
  • Perpetual Smiler: Pretty much always cheerful.
  • Smart People Wear Glasses: Very knowledgeable and resourceful, even by Operator standards.
  • Techno Wizard: Downplayed, but she's very skilled with computers and designed at least part of Tamakoma's virtual training program. She's also the only operator to operate two teams at once (Tamakoma First and Tamakoma Second) plus Jin, though in T1 and Jin's case she might be covering for Yuri.

A-Rank, Operator
Years in Border Service: 4½-5 years (Old Border Generation)
Voiced by: Mamiko Noto
The niece of Chief Rindo and Operator for Tamakoma-1.
  • Comically Missing the Point: When Osamu fails to recognize Kido in the Old Border photo and is shocked when she points him out, she explains that he didn't have the scar yet—except no, it's the fact thaut the man was smiling that Osamu can't get over.
  • Cool Big Sis: Immediately starts assuming this role to Tamakoma-2.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: We see her (or rather, her back) during the second invasion arc, when Tamakoma's unusual status is being explained.

Tamakoma Branch Chief
Years in Border Service: 4½-over 5 years (Border Founder)
Voiced by: Keiji Fujiwara (S1), Kenjiro Tsuda (S2 onwards)

  • A Father to His Men: Would do anything to protect his people at Tamakoma.
  • Guile Hero: He and Jin get along great as they're both schemers. When Kido accuses Rindo of being up to something with Tamakoma-2's enlistment, Rindo has to assure him that that was entirely Osamu and co.'s decision and that he's not always up to something.
  • Hidden Badass: While he's yet to be seen fighting, Border Briefing File reveals that not only was he The Mentor to Kazama's late brother, but his stats are actually on par with Shinoda.
  • Mellow Fellow: As with Jin, he tends to be fairly relaxed.
  • The Mentor: For Shin, Kazama's late brother (it's why he's the only character who calls Kazama by his first name, for those wondering; it's to avoid overlap with Shin).
  • Nice Guy: Very laid back and reasonable.
  • Parental Substitute: For Yotaro, who's implied to not be his biological son.
  • Perma-Stubble: Has some facial hair growing in his chin.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Sees neighbors not just as enemies but also useful allies and potential friends.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Always smoking and has definitely a cool attitude with his position.
  • Torture Is Ineffective: Or at least, he believes it lefts too much scars in both the torturer and the tortured.

Civilian, Aristeran prince
Years in Border Service: 4½-5 years (Old Border Generation)
Age: 5
Voiced by: Megumi Urawa (Japanese)

A child and technically senior member of Border who lives at the Tamakoma Branch.

  • Balloon Belly: In episode 60.
  • Butt-Monkey: Often gets hit comically.
  • Faking the Dead: When Hyuse needs to deceive Reghi and pretends to stab Yotaro with a Scorpion.
  • Happily Adopted: Implied. Rindo doesn't seem to be his biological father, and the series has been suspiciously vague so far about who his parents were. Regardless, he's very happy with Tamakoma. He's revealed to be the crown prince of Neighbor world, Aristera.
  • Hero-Worshipper: He looks up to Tamakoma (Jin and Reiji in particular) and can't stand it when they lose.
  • Moe Couplet: With Hyuse. Yotaro's loud personality seems to be actually welcome for him, most likely because it means Yotaro's the one person who just sees Hyuse as a new friend rather than as the prisoner of war that he is.
  • Morality Pet: To Hyuse. While Hyuse doesn't care for most of Miden, Yotaro is pretty much the one person he likes and is kindest to.
  • Noble Fugitive: Chapter 201 reveals that Yotaro is actually a prince from Aristera, a Neighbor country allied with Old Border which got destroyed in a war. He and his sister Ruka are currently fugitives at Border.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: Yotaro's actually a prince.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Prone to considering himself superior to pretty much everyone. Subverted, because he is actually a prince.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: According to Volume 3, he is capable of talking to animals. However, this ability hasn't really been demonstrated.
  • Tagalong Kid: A kid who happens to hang around with the most elite agents of Border.

Raijinmaru

Years in Border Service: 4 years (New Border 1st Gen.)
Voiced by: Megumi Urawa
Tamakoma Branch's pet Capybara who always stick by Yōtarō's side.

  • Ambiguous Gender: Everyone assumes Raijinmaru's a he, but Ashihara commented on the possibility of Raijinmaru actually being a female. Raijinmaru was referred to as 'her' in chapter 202.
  • Horse of a Different Color: Yōtarō frequently uses him as a mount.
  • Inexplicably Awesome: Where did he come from? We just don't know.
  • The Nose Knows: Yotaro uses Raijinmaru's sense of smell to track Hyuse down after the latter escapes from Tamakoma.
  • Team Pet: A big Capybara who serves as Yōtaro's pet, he believes it to be female, though.
  • Memetic Badass: Border Official Guide tends to give it the best stats as a joke. Raijinmaru may actually be Border's Crown Trigger.

     Michael Kronin

Years in Border Service: 4½-5 years (Old Border Generation)
Voiced by: Ryota Takeuchi

Tamakoma’s resident Neighbor Engineer, and the sole surviving Aristeran royal servant of Ruka and Yōtarō.

  • Bad Liar: His introduction consists of him stating his name, following with a blunt single word, "Canadian” to enhance his cover identity’s place of birth. At least in Japan, people can overlook this since Michael looks foreign enough to be forgiven for his broken Japanese.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: He's referenced near the beginning of the series, when Border's upper echeleon remarks that Tamakoma's attitude towards Yuma is unsurprising, given their engineer being a neighbour. We don't meet him until over a hundred chapters later.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Same deal as Yuri. He also appear in the very first chapters as a combatant, back when Border first revealed themselves to the public.

  • One-Man Army: He had to be one since his sole presence was enough to turn the tides of war from one side to the other.
