Jack Price
Nickname(s): Jack Darkness, Shadow WraithRace: Vampire - sired by Max Orlock
Constantly smiling, killing like it's a reflex, and all-in-all doing as he pleases with a deranged indifference, Jack is obviously a few cards short of a full deck. Very few vampires dare to cross him however due to his ruthlessness and abnormally strong manipulation over shadows and darkness. However he has much more to him than meets the eye, as he has a horribly dark past involving his sire, Orlock. He rarely opens up about such though, and can become very cold when it is mentioned. He tends to lose his patience easily.
The events of Excrucio reveal that he was originally Happily Married with a beautiful wife and daughter. That all changed when Orlock decided to murder his family and turn him into a vampire. Why exactly Orlock chose Jack is still unclear.
- Anti-Hero: Usually a type III. Sometimes can slip into Type IV, or even type V at his worst. So far we've only seen him take out other evil vampires, though. He's not above forcing someone to either choose death or become a vamp, though.
- Being Tortured Makes You Evil: Orlock spent a very long time trying to invoke this trope on Jack. The worst part? It seems like it worked.
- Big Damn Heroes: In Excrutio, he saves Topaz when he's being attacked by a pack of vampires. Sadly, he didn't arrive in time to stop them from forcing him to drink vampire blood, so he offers to show Topaz how to survive.
- Broken Bird
- Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: He tries to save his family, but only winds up getting turned into a vampire by their killer.
- The Cameo: He appears in some of the Bonus Material for the author's other comics. He's even made one cannon and one non-cannon appearance in Cwen's Quest.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: After Orlock finally breaks him, he loses almost all semblance of morality and mercy, but he still cares deeply for Topaz.
- Hearing Voices: In the Ask Jack Fourth-Wall Mail Slot animation, Jack claims that he often hears voices on his worse days.
- Horrifying Hero: Falls into this after Orlock finally breaks him.
- Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Even when he was human, but Topaz's flashback at the beginning of Excrucio reveal that he grew it out after he finished high school.
- My Greatest Failure: The loss of his family.
- Papa Wolf: He never goes more ballistic on Orlock than after Orlock tricks him into drinking the remains of his daughter. He also does his best to fight off Orlock during their first encounter, but when you're an ordinary human up against a monster amongst monsters, there's not much you can do.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: After being turned.
- Sanity Slippage: Justified. Seeing your family murdered and being tortured to the point of forgetting your past will do this to you.
- Trauma Conga Line: His family is murdered, he gets kidnapped and turned by their killer, spends a nondescript amount of time as said killer's prisoner, is subjected to numerous forms of Cold-Blooded Torture, including, but not limited to, nearly getting one of his legs sawed off and getting shoved in a freaking Iron Maiden, temporarily manages to escape, gets caught and tortured again, escapes again and runs into his best friend from high school—whom he can barely remember at that point—, but shows up too late to stop a pack of vampires from turning him, is caught and tortured again, only that time he finally breaks.
- Trauma-Induced Amnesia: He has a lot of trouble remembering his past because of all of the torture Orlock put him through.
Vallov (VAL-LUV)
Nickname(s): NoneRace: DroneVallov is of the rare vampire-made race, the Drones, and was created by Orlock using Jack's blood and the usual macabre methods to put together his body. Like all Drones, Vallov's main purpose in life is to protect and serve his vampire master Jack. He has a strong connection to him and even learns to show emotion through him, as we see when he cracks a smile from time to time. Though Jack and the others wonder if there isn't something more to him, if he feels his own emotions. Vallov is extremely quiet, usually only giving abrupt responses to orders. Though occasionally he will ask questions when he is very curious about something. He loathes Orlock to no end, as he is the only one he cannot protect Jack from.
- The Big Guy: He's the tallest character in the cast!
- The Brute: He mostly relies on his immense strength and durability in fights.
- Covered with Scars: Frankenstein's monster-esque stitching all over his face. They've vanished by the events of the main comic, however.
- Undying Loyalty: He'll disobey Orlock for Jack's sake.
Topaz Michaels
Nickname(s): Paz, PazzyRace: Vampire - sired by a clansmenTopaz is Jack's only link to his old, human life. The two were supposedly best friends during their school years, making him the only person who knows what Jack was like before his mental breakdown. Though even now he is the only one Jack truly opens up to. A kind and loveable jokester, Topaz is one of the few vampires in the world whose personality wasn't altered by the traumatizing vampiric transformation. Though some people, including Jack, wonder if it didn't drive him crazy in a way, and he simply masks his true feelings for the sake of his friends. Though he learned to be exceptionally skilled with guns and axes, he seems to only fight when necessary and doesn't usually go along on Jack's raids. He has a bit of a temper, as well as a slight perverted streak around women.
- Eye Color Change: His eyes turn a sharp green after he's turned.
- My Greatest Failure: Not trying to save Jack when Orlock took him right before his eyes.
- Pretty Boy: Pretty enough to get the female vampire leading the pack he accidentally ran into to decide to turn him instead of simply drain him of his blood.
- Took A Level In Bad Ass: Does so after discovering the existence of vampires, and even more so after being turned.
Jill
Nickname(s): NoneRace: Vampire - sired by JackA young woman who'd wanted to become a vampire huntress despite her poor health. She'd risked her life to find a small instillation of vampire hunters by traveling by herself in the night. Sadly, Jack and co decide to make a preemptive strike against the hunters. Jack then drinks enough of her blood to kill her and gives her two choices: die of blood loss, or let him sire her and have her join him. She chose the latter.
- An Offer You Can't Refuse: It was either die or become a vampire.
- Berserk Button: Don't taunt her about how she's become one of the monsters she wanted to hunt, even if you're just trying to be nice to her. She will retaliate.
- Identical Stranger: She resembles Jack's deceased wife. Whether this is just a result of the art style and monochromatic color scheme or whether this was intentional or not is not exactly clear yet. If it's the latter, then this was likely Jack's reason for siring her.
- I Just Want to Be Badass: Her initial introduction was her going out of her way and risking her life in the hopes of becoming a vampire huntress. She wound up getting turned by Jack.
- The Smurfette Principle: She's the only major female character to not immediately get killed off so far.
- Supernatural Gold Eyes: Her eyes turn a piercing gold after Jack turns her.
Maximilian Orlock
Nickname(s): Max, The Demon King, Blood EyesRace: Vampire - sire unknown
Demonic, ferocious, and horribly cruel, Orlock is an exceedingly powerful vampire that no one dares to trifle with without risking terrible consequences. Jack is said to be Orlock's only sireling, as well as basically his slave. Orlock gets what he wants by inflicting suffering, be it with illusions; mind manipulation, or with the help of medieval torture devices found in his castle. Because of his otherworldly characteristics and inhumane behavior, his race and history are constantly questioned. All in all Orlock is a living, monstrous enigma. He eats the flesh as well as drinks the blood.
- Aristocrats Are Evil: Shows signs of this, as he has his own castle, complete with mindless servants and dungeon full of medieval torture devices.
- Being Tortured Makes You Evil: He's spend ages trying to invoke this on Jack.
- The Cameo: He appears alongside Jack in the artist's other webcomic, Cwen's Quest
- Creepy Crosses: He sometimes wears an upside down silver cross on his chest, adding to the creepiness of his character.
- I'm a Humanitarian: Notable because he doesn't just drink the blood, he eats the flesh along with it.
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Delivers one to the vampires who attack Jack at one point. He rips them limb from limb without even touching them.
- Too Many Belts: he wears several belts over his lower chest and torso.
- Villain Takes an Interest: He constantly refers to Jack as his son.
- Would Hurt a Child/Would Hit a Girl: Perfectly fine with murdering a woman and her baby.
