Lakeview

Uploads

     Nathan Brown

Nathan Brown

Portrayed by: Robbie Amell

A newly deceased computer programmer who is uploaded to the digital afterlife Lakeview

  • The Atoner: When he regains his memories.
  • Digitized Hacker: Starts to become this once Nora gives him a piece of IT equipment that exposes the code in Lakeview.
  • Disappeared Dad: All we know is he wasn't an involved father and left Nathan and his mom at some point when he was young.
  • Friend to All Children: Gets along very well with his niece Nevaeh and with Dylan.
  • Idiot Hair: Courtesy of Nora in the first episode. She removes it after she gets to know him.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He sold out his best friend to Ingrid's father, but it was for the sake of getting money for his family, who aren't very well off. He's shown to be a pretty nice guy on the whole.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Some of his memories are missing post upload, particularly to do with whatever he was developing with his best friend. Nora helps him get them back.
  • Momma's Boy: Portrayed seriously, Nathan doesn't come from money and it's stated that his drive comes from wanting to provide for his family.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Nora. Nathan can't be with her because he is literally owned by Ingrid and doesn't have the money to pay for another afterlife. And Nora can't be with him because it's against Horizen Company Policy.
  • Stubborn Hair: Nora makes a strand of his hair stick out.

     Luke

Luke

Portrayed by: Kevin Bigley

Another resident of Lakeview who befriends Nathan.

  • Age-Gap Romance: Has a fling with Ingrid's uploaded grandmother, Mildred, who is in her 100's. Her avatar is of her in her 30s, but in grayscale.
  • An Arm and a Leg: Lost both of his legs when he was deployed in Iran, and lived with it for five years before opting for upload, which he called a sui-scan.
    • Aleesha digitally removes his fingers and eventually his dick in one episode when he keeps exploiting the system. He gets them back.
  • Nice Guy: Aleesha points out that he never judges anyone.
  • Worthy Opponent: Despite his bickering with Aleesha, he doesn't actually dislike her. When one of their battles goes too far he even covers for Aleesha with her supervisor when she's about to get in trouble.

     Mildred Kannerman

Mildred Kannerman

Portrayed by: Hilary Jardine (Season 1), Vic Michaelis (Season 2)

Ingrid's grandmother.

  • Monochrome Past: Has an avatar that looks like she stepped right out of a black and white film. It was based on a more than sixty-year-old photograph of what she looked like in her 30's (or possibly what her sister looked like — no one is sure if they got the right photo). Her greyscale coloring makes her stand out in the lushly colored environs of Lakeview.
  • Mrs. Robinson: Was over 100 years old when she was uploaded, takes a liking to Luke.
  • The Nth Doctor: Changes her face between seasons 1 and 2.
  • Older Than They Look: Is well into her hundreds but her avatar is based on a photo of her in her thirties.

     David Choak

David Choak

Portrayed by: William Bruce Davis

A wealthy neighbor of Nathan's in Lakeview.

  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: Was one in life, but dying and being allowed to enjoy the fruits of his labor in Lakeview seems to have mellowed him out considerably.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He is a Corrupt Corporate Executive who had the last living black rhino killed so they could program the taste for him to eat in Lakeview. But for all that, he's remarkably friendly. Season 2 gives a look into his thoughts. Not only does he regard the other residents of Lakeview as peasants, but he was actually involved in Nathan's death, and is a major player in a voter disenfranchisement scheme.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: He is a barely even veiled stand-in for David Koch, an American billionaire who died less than a year before the show premiered.

     Dylan

Dylan

Portrayed by: Rhys Slack

Another resident of Lakeview who was uploaded when he was 11.

  • Gender Bender: Gets illegal hacks to age his avatar up so that he actually looks his age, albeit with the catch that it turned him into a girl. It gets quickly undone, although not without him striding into public as a Walking Shirtless Scene who didn't realize he was revealing certain assets of his new body for all the world to see.
  • Older Than They Look: He died at age 11 but is chronologically 18. His body is stuck the same because his parents (who control his account) won't agree to age up his avatar.

Angels

     Nora Antony

Nora Antony

Portrayed by: Andy Allo

A living employee of Lakeview, she's Nathan's handler

  • Daddy's Girl: Nora is very protective of her dad, who is chronically ill from "Vape Lung". She tries to save as much money as possible and maintain a high rating to get him a place in Lakeview.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: Her dad calls her Noni.
  • Missing Mom: Her mother died a few years earlier. As it was sudden, she was not uploaded.
  • The Prankster: Frequently messes with Nathan.

     Aleesha

Aleesha

Portrayed by: Zainab Johnson

Nora's coworker, she's Luke's assigned Angel.

  • Impractically Fancy Outfit: Her Angel avatar body always wears a variety of fancy outfits and intricate hairstyles.
  • Sassy Black Woman: She is Luke's Angel, but in practice they're Sitcom Archnemeses. She steals his fingers when he makes her mad, and threatens to steal other parts of him if he runs out of fingers.
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: With Luke. They're constantly arguing and in one episode she starts stealing his fingers when he makes her mad.

     Lucy

Lucy

Portrayed by: Andrea Rosen

The manager of the Horizen customer service center and Nora's boss.

  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Begins to loosen up during the holiday party a bit, and tops it off with an announcement everyone on the staff is getting bonuses. Except she was just kidding, no one is getting bonuses, and she is quick to remind everyone to be at work the next day at 7:00 am sharp. Her tone implies she thought the joke about bonuses was hilarious.
  • Mean Boss: She treats Nora with no respect, threatens to fire her, and refuses to give bonuses to her employees. Lucy also undermines the competence and abilities of her employees when they deal with pushy customers in order to make herself look better.

Living People

     Ingrid Kannerman

Ingrid Kannerman

Portrayed by: Allegra Edwards

Nathan's girlfriend, who is paying for his subscription to Lakeview

  • The Baby Trap: In the hopes of repairing their relationship, and in the hopes that some of Nathan's paternal love will transfer over to her, she tries to adopt a digital baby with Nathan in season 2.
  • Black Sheep: As Nathan's niece notes, her family is mean, treating her like complete garbage. Contrast Ingrid who, while not exactly a bastion of selflessness, has a good heart and treats most people very well, being good friends with Nathan's niece.
  • Faking the Dead: It is revealed in Season 2 that she lied about uploading herself and is just using a sex suit to pretend to be an upload so she can keep her relationship with Nathan. When she comes clean to Nathan about this in the season finale, he is not happy.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Usually comes across as very shallow and self-centered, but occasionally shows that she's got a good heart buried deep (deep) down. There is a definite hint that she downgraded Nathan's "accident" to a non-fatal one that left him with survivable injuries, so she could get him uploaded because the next murder attempt might be one she couldn't interfere with. In the second season, it is revealed she lied about uploading herself and is actually pretending to be an upload to try to keep her relationship with Nathan alive and tries to force him to have a digital baby with her and that she has secretly been preparing a clone body for him to download him into, but these were done in a misguided belief that they would repair their failing relationship. When Nora and the Ludds come to rescue Nathan's newly downloaded body, she's convinced not to interfere.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Her openly antagonistic interactions with her family suggest that her desperation to hold on to Nathan is because he is the only source of the positive connection she has, and the only "real" thing in her life.
  • Meaningful Name: Ingrid means "fair, beautiful", which is apt for a vain blonde.
  • Rich Bitch: Though a slightly more sympathetic version.
  • Yandere: To Nathan, much to his displeasure. It is made clear she feels threatened by Nora due to her and Nathan's friendship, and in the Season 2 finale she steals some of Nathan's DNA, intending to create a clone of him for herself while swearing that Nora won't stop her.

     Oliver Kannerman

Oliver Kannerman

Portrayed by: Barclay Hope

Ingrid's dad.

  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: He secretly paid off Nathan to give him the code for Beyond, allowing Horizen to create its own version. He was somehow involved in getting Nathan killed afterward.
