- Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Played straight with Boom. Despite having his fair share of trauma due to his Dark and Troubled Past and having reedeming qualities, he's despicted as someone as deranged as the crimes he commits. Invoked by himself in season 2, he calls Erika out as he tells her she has no right questioning them as he asks her why does her husbands murder serves as any justification at all to rejoin the group, and how does this makes her any different than him.
- Recruiting the Criminal:He had already started his murder rampage way before he joined the organization.
- Sympathetic Murderer: Played with. While he does have a nice side, his actions are never justified despite it.
Paul
Age: Early to Mid 20s
Height: 183 cm (6 ft)
Blood type: AB
- The Baby of the Bunch: Despite not knowing his true age. The author establishes as him being between his early to mid 20s. This trope is also played with since Box and Erika refers to him as a child at some point in the story and he'd rather get the offense in being called clumsy rather than a child when Box refers to him as a "clumsy child" when she presents him.
- Doesn't Know Their Own Birthday: Played for drama. When Paul starts to heal Erika after her Secret Test of Character she asks him what his age is only for him to admit that he doesn't know and when he told her that he murdered his parent he was just asuming he was around 16 as his birthday was never celebrated and it's not like he can remembered being born. Subverted as Erika proposes to make that day his birthday and promising to celebrated with him the next year.
- Happiness in Slavery: Deconstructed: One of the reasons he follows Box orders is because he feels safe inside this organization, he believes her cause would allow to create a society where no one hates him. Yet, that doesn't necesarilly means he follows orders out of devotion to the cause but rather, he does so out of fear of her.
- The Heart: He is truly appreciated by his two murder teamates. Most of Boom's Pet the Dog moments comes from his interactions with him as he always tries to protect him from Box rage.
- Stockholm Syndrome:See more in Happiness in Slavery. Despite his fear of Box he gets exited whenever she compliments his work and truly appreciates his teamates.
