Hama

  • Adaptational Heroism: She is Katara's benevolent waterbending master in this AU.
  • Barefoot Captives: Dressed in rags and bare feet while in the waterbender prison, along with Katara and the other Southern waterbenders.
  • Casual Danger Dialogue: Shows a bit of dry wit during the escape from the Waterbender Prison. Her quips show her lost youth and her weariness of the world.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Defied. Hama and the other older waterbenders use up most of their strength in getting to the escape boat after Sokka frees them from the prison. As such, they're unable to summon their waterbending to cast off the boat. But Katara, being the only child prisoner, still has just enough strength to push the boat out into the open ocean before blacking out.
Hama: Haven't worked this hard since my hair was black...
  • Mama Bear: Grand-mama bear. Aside from being Katara's first waterbending master, Hama was also practically a secondary grandmother to her in prison.
  • Morality Pet: Having the opportunity to teach Katara while in the waterbender prison might be the reason why Hama didn't gain Black-and-White Insanity in this AU.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Despite being eager to join the fight against the Fire Nation, Hama makes it clear to Katara that it is the latter's choice alone on whether or not she wants to fight as well, given that she is still a child.
