House Goffe

     Hector

Hector Alexander Goffe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2_17_1.png
Our hero, a young black man who commits suicide, which kicks off the story. He is tasked by the Grim Reaper who revives him to save innocent people in danger. He sees reapers as scythe wielding skeletons in black cloaks.

     Garovel

Garovel

What Garovel looks like to Hector.
The Grim Reaper who revives Hector and guides him through the story.

  • Big Brother Mentor: He's not just there to explain servant powers and the like; in addition to being the thing that keeps him alive, he is also Hector's first true and closest friend.
Garovel: So now you’ve got another chance. And this time, you’ll try to help me, just like I’ll try to help you.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Implied, as he is reluctant to talk about his life when he was alive. What little we do know is that he and his sister used to live on Exoltha before the whole continent became enveloped by a Perpetual Storm. And even then, the two of them witnessed the slaughter of an entire village when they were young.
  • Deadpan Snarker
  • Don't Fear the Reaper: He is really nice and gentle towards wandering souls, as well as the people he cares about who are still alive.
  • Exposition of Immortality: One of the reasons he likes to talk about history so much is because he lived through a lot of it.
  • Grim Reaper
  • Immortal Immaturity: Though not to the extent of some other reapers, he does enjoy a good dick joke or two.
  • Mr. Exposition: He really does love to explain stuff. Between being the one to introduce Hector to Reapers as well as having had several lifetimes to learn about various subjects, he's responsible for explaining the majority of whats going on, often including entire paragraphs of exposition at a time.
  • Only Friend: To Hector.

     Samuel Goffe

Samuel Goffe

Hector's father.
  • Grand Theft Me: His fate at the hands of Geoffrey.
  • Parental Neglect: Like his wife, he wasn't exactly the most attentive parent.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: Implied. While Geoffrey was trying to break Hector, he states that Samuel used to defuse bombs, and suffered from vivid hallucinations afterward. He took medication for this, but the details are never expanded upon.

     Vanessa Goffe

Vanessa Goffe (neé Cole)

Hector's mother.
  • Excessive Mourning: After the events of the Third Oath, she spends most of her time sitting around moping. Even after multiple months have passed, and she has moved into a castle with plenty of new interesting people, she just sits in a dark room and reads, only rarely eating.
  • Parental Neglect: Like her husband, she isn't exactly the most attentive parent. As the story goes on, her attitude toward Hector borders on child abuse. She gets... better?
  • Ungrateful Bastard: After her husband dies, she isn't too happy with Hector's efforts to keep her safe from Abolish.

     Lady Carthrace

Lady Amelia Carthrace

An advisor sent by Queen Helen to assist Hector at Warrenhold.

     Jamal Easton

Jamal Easton

A royal guardsman who volunteered to work for Hector when he was awarded Warrenhold.

House Colt

     Colt

Jeremiah Colt

A corrupt cop who worked for the Rofal family to ensure the safety of his children. He became a servant in the Third Oath. His reaper is Bohwanox. He sees reapers as black hooded figures.
  • Combat Pragmatist
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Grew up in a foster family, never exactly bullied, but still beat up by the other kids. Later lived with a woman who was abusive towards him and their children, nearly got thrown in jail for the attempted murder of their children that she commited, only to be "rescued" by Joseph Rofal and subsequently forced to work for the Rofal family because his children were being held hostage by Rofal.
  • Heel–Face Turn: He used to be a dirty cop working for the crime boss Joseph Rofal, but after meeting Hector and rescuing his children from Rofal, he switches sides and works with Hector.
    • It's even possible to say that he went through a Face–Heel Turn before that. As a young man, he was fairly idealistic and became a cop in order to do good. Due to Colt's personal problems, Rofal gained leverage over Colt and forced him into working for the Rofal family. Colt lost his idealistic outlook on life and stopped caring for anyone but his children.
  • Papa Wolf
Colt: I'll do anything. You understand that, kid? There are only two lives that matter to me, and mine ain't one of them.
  • Put on a Bus: Around the middle of the fifth Oath, he has left for Snider, the country where is grandparents emigrated from. He hasn't been seen since, presumably living peacefully with his kids.
  • Trapped in Villainy: Sort of. He has very compelling reasons to obey Joseph Rofal, but he wasn't exactly a good guy to begin with. After teaming up with Hector, Colt's lack of obvious remorse for killing innocent people still serves as a point of conflict between them.

     Bohwanox

Bohwanox

A reaper who met Hector and Garovel at the Brighton hospital and who eventually becomes a companion in their adventures. His servant is Colt.
  • Naïve Newcomer: He is relatively young as a reaper (about 70 years compared to Garovel's 3,000) and has never had a servant before.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: He enjoys watching Colt drag himself out of his own grave, and is quite interested in how embalming chemicals will ooze out of a servant as they regenerate.
  • Put on a Bus: Along with his servant.

     The twins

Stephanie and Thomas Colt

Colt's children. They're both about a year old.

House Fullister

     Roman

Roman Fullister

An unusually prosperous thief based in Atreya. His reaper is Voreese. He sees reapers as ghostly crows.

     Voreese

Voreese

An abrasive, foul-mouthed reaper with a hidden heart of gold. Her servant is Roman.
  • Hidden Depths: Turns out that rude, loud-mouthed Voreese has a very soft center.
Roman: She wants to make the world a better place. And not just in a good-deed-for-the-day kind of way. She wants me to obtain so much strength and influence that I can at least try to fix some of the really fucked up things in the world. Like slavery and widespread famine and institutionalized poverty — y'know, the things that no one's been able to fix in centuries.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: While most characters in the story aren't particularly shy about swearing, she stands out. In her very first appearance, she calls her opponents "shitheads" and ends up trading insults with her own servant.

     Gina

Gina

Roman's assistant for everything that he can't solve with thievery or fighting. She is a normal human.
  • Girl Friday: To Roman.
  • Hikikomori: She used to be agoraphobic, refusing to leave her apartment for months on end. Roman helped her get over this behavior by burning it down.
  • Just Friends: Or rather, just coworkers. Gina canonically has a crush on Roman, but he can't reciprocate for reasons.
  • Nerves of Steel: Without even being able to fight, she waltzed into a castle overrun with superpowered psychos from Abolish and riddled it with eavesdropping devices, then spent weeks holed up listening to the bug feeds (which often include the sounds of Abolishers gruesomely killing people) and feeding info to her allies. All while knowing that at any time a curious Abolish reaper might spot her soul and bring the super villains down on her.
  • The Reliable One

House Edith

     Lynn

Lynette Edith

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2_9.png
A royal guardswoman charged by Queen Helen to find the mastermind behind her assassination. She is quickly drawn into the fight against Abolish, and plays a significant part in their defeat. She has since then been promoted to being the Queen's personal bodyguard.
  • Action Girl
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished: Averted. She lost an eye early on in the story and is mentioned to wear an eye patch now. There's also the fact that she has an aberration artifact attached permanently to her arm. The only way to get rid of it would be to cut off the arm in question, and since Lynn isn't a servant and can't just regrow her arm, the damage would be permanent.
  • Bodyguarding a Badass: While she is pretty badass in her own right, Queen Helen is a servant, and thus is only in danger from other servants. However, Lynn has still held her own against everyone who has threatened her so far.
  • Braids of Action
  • Empowered Badass Normal: While she isn't a servant, she does have an aberration artifact attached permanently to her arm. And even before then, she was able to hold her own against empowered opponents.
  • Eyepatch of Power
  • Heroes Prefer Swords
  • Out of Focus: Has not been seen since 2015.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality
  • Younger Than They Look: While she is nineteen at the time of writing, she is described as having cheekbones that make her look older.
