The Kingdom

A group based out of an old high school, with a fortified wall built out of metal sheets and reinforced by school buses. They are led by King Ezekiel and join Alexandria and the Hilltop in the war against the Saviors. After the war, they become part of a network of communities attempting to rebuild civilization in the Washington D.C. area.

     In General

General tropes about the Kingdom.

  • Hufflepuff House: Out of all of the communities, The Kingdom is the most minor and Out of Focus. Their only prominent members for the longest time are Ezekiel and Shiva, both of whom are now dead, and we only get the rarest glimpses at the community itself. This is finally averted when William and Zachary are introduced at the beginning of the Whisperer War and the group starts to get more focus.
  • Large Ham: The guards of the Kingdom tend to follow Ezekiel's example of being a Large Ham for effect and then dropping the act around friends:
Kingdom Guard: Who dares trespass on the sovereign land of—oh, shit—Jesus? Is that you?! Hot damn, man. We didn't recognize you at first. Sorry if we startled you.
  • Red Shirt Army: They suffer heavier casualties than any other community during the war with the Saviors.

Kings

     Ezekiel

"King" Ezekiel

Debut: Issue 108

Ezekiel is the ruler of The Kingdom. He was a zookeeper before the Zombie Apocalypse and owns a pet tiger named Shiva that he saved from the zoo where he worked.

  • Back for the Dead: After a short but noticeable absence following the Time Skip, he returns to the main story only to be killed during Alpha's massacre soon after.
  • Dreadlock Warrior: He has dreadlocks and can fight when he has to.
  • Every Scar Has a Story: He shows Michonne three large scars on his stomach where Shiva had attacked him while he attempted to help her after she was injured.
  • The Good King: His number one priority is looking out for the well-being of his people and his allies by ending Negan's reign of terror.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has one after losing a good number of his men and Shiva, though Michonne snaps him out of it.
  • Hidden Depths: Ezekiel may seem crazy at first, but he is actually a very good actor and strategist who is easily able to read people. In the "Letter Hacks" of Issue 113, Robert Kirkman claims that Ezekiel may be the smartest character in the series so far.
  • Hope Spot: Think Ezekiel will get back together with Michonne after being encouraged to do so by Pete? Nope, he's beheaded an issue later by Alpha as he's on his way to profess his love to his ex.
  • Iconic Item: Is pretty much always wearing fingerless gloves.
  • Large Ham: Although his whole personality is an act. He used to act in a community theater, which helped him develop his "king" persona.
  • The Leader: Type IV. He admits to Michonne that he became "King" due to his group of survivors making him a Memetic Badass due to having a pet tiger and having such a powerful personality. He decided that since the stories that built up around him gave them hope, he had no right to correct their notions about him.
  • Off with His Head!: The last person to be revealed in the line of Alpha's decapitation victims.
  • Panthera Awesome: Shiva, a tiger from the zoo where he worked. He explains to Michonne that he was there the day Shiva was born and later saved her life when she fell in a pit, making her loyal to him to the point where she sacrificed her life to save him from walkers.
  • Parental Abandonment: Tells Michonne that his father was dead to him from an early age and that his mother never really earned being called one.
  • Reluctant Warrior: He dislikes violence, but understands the need for it to combat the Saviors.
  • The Smart Guy: To Rick's The Hero and and Jesus' The Lancer
  • Sword Cane: One of his main items.

     William

William

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/william_twdc.png
Debut: Issue 157

An older resident of the Kingdom who is first seen arguing with Zachary. He may be next in line to be the new king, but seems to resent the idea of becoming a leader.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: William is a fair and level-headed person, but he doesn't hesitate to threaten Zachary with a knife when the latter starts to threaten him and the other communities.
  • Cool Old Guy: Though his first appearance implied that he might try to usurp Michonne, he quickly proves himself to be a loyal and reasonable survivor. When he hears of the Hilltop's destruction he immediately mobilizes his troops to go help the survivors.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Both fair and pragmatic, he's a natural fit for leadership.
  • Refusal of the Call: He insists that he doesn't want to lead the Kingdom, but circumstances seem to be forcing his hand.
  • Remember the New Guy?: He's a very important and valued member of the Kingdom, but we don't see or hear of him until the start of the Whisperer War.

Soldiers and Guards

     Richard

Richard

Debut: Issue 115

King Ezekiel's head of security.

  • The Big Guy: He seems to be the muscle of the Kingdom.
  • Number Two: For Ezekiel.
  • Red Shirt: Despite being a high-ranking member of the Kingdom he receives zero characterization before dying to the Saviors.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Lasts four issues before being killed by Saviors.

     Benjamin

Benjamin

Debut: Issue 129

A guard from the Kingdom who's job is to keep the road to the Hilltop secure.

  • Butt-Monkey: In his first appearance he is beaten with a cane by Rick for failing to clear the road of walkers, which could have gotten both Rick and Carl killed. In Issue 147 Gus mentions that he is "on probation for something".
  • The Ditz: Seems to be quite the idiot, as he fails miserably at his relatively simple job and is eventually put on probation for unknown reasons.

     Gus

Gus

Debut: Issue 147

Benjamin's replacement as the guard for the Hilltop road.

  • Locked Out of the Loop: Due to his job he is unable to attend the fair and therefore has no idea that Alpha killed twelve people, including his leader Ezekiel.
  • Nice Guy: A jovial and friendly guy.

Other Kingdom Citizens

     Zachary

Zachary

Debut: Issue 157

An older resident of the Kingdom who is first seen arguing with William.

  • Dirty Coward: He talks a big game, but immediately turns into a whimpering mess when William puts a knife to his throat.
  • Jerkass: He is disrespectful and rude toward William.
  • The Starscream: He tries to encourage William to turn against the other communities. William puts a stop to it by threatening his life.

     Shiva

Shiva

Debut: Issue 108

Ezekiel's beloved tiger who's life he saved, making her undyingly loyal to him.

  • Action Pet: She kills both walkers and Saviors during her time in the series.
  • Defiant to the End: The zombies surround and devour her, but she still manages to go down swinging. The very last image of her is a shot of one of her paws clawing a zombie's face off.
  • Eaten Alive: How she dies.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Saves Ezekiel from walkers, getting herself eaten.
  • Panthera Awesome: Shiva is a tiger and kicks a lot of ass.
