Main Characters

    Ryuta Hoshikawa
Voiced by: Hirofumi Tanaka
  • Author Avatar: Downplayed. While he and his gang enter the Spirit World, only he and Yuko were found worthy of ascending to the seventh and eighth tiers of Heaven. Moreover, he was the only one who chastises Niches for leading people astray and summoning a Hermes mecha to fight Hisler's demonic elephant, which makes him an idealized version of Ryuho Okawa as a college-aged young man.
  • The Chosen One: At his version of the Bodhisattva Realm, Edison reveals to him that he's chosen to guide people towards the Eternal Buddha.
  • The Generic Guy: One of very few examples where a main character is this, as he has no remarkable personality traits other than setting out to find Edison and being chosen to carry out the Savior's mission.

    Yuko Natsuse
Voiced by: Sayaka Ōkawa
  • Pink Means Feminine: Her clothes have pink as one of their main colors, and she's a demure, pure-hearted girl.
  • Reincarnation Romance: At the Bodhisattva Realm, Helen Keller reveals to her that she has always reincarnated with the man she is destined to marry; said man turns out to be her friend, Ryuta Hoshikawa.
  • Satellite Love Interest: Yuko is mostly defined by her relationship with Ryuta and her religious beliefs.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She is the only female character in Ryuta's gang.
  • Token Religious Teammate: She is the only religious character in Ryuta's group, which becomes an asset when her prayers make Edison's spirit phone work and even teaches the others Astral Projection to enter the Spirit World in search of the man himself.

    Patrick
  • Agent Scully: He initially is indifferent to the existence of the Spirit World. However, his skepticism starts to fall apart as he enters the world and eventually becomes a believer after Ryuta and Yuko save both him and Roberto from Hell.

    Roberto

Others

    The Old Shaman
Voiced by: Ako Mayama
  • Braids, Beads and Buckskins: As a shaman, she wears her hair in two oversized braids and wears beaded necklaces over stereotypical Inca clothes.
  • Magical Native American: Her role is nothing more than to serve as a medium for Thomas Edison to give Ryuta a message. She is never seen again afterwards.
  • No Name Given: She doesn't have a name in the story.
  • Willing Channeler: She takes Ryuta, Patrick, and Roberto to her house to communicate the former of the three an important message from Thomas Edison. When she channels his spirit, Edison asks Ryuta to make contact with the Shaman's hand, in which Ryuta sees equations and an image for his spirit phone.

The Spirit World

    In General
  • Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: Historical figures are depicted here as powerful angels and demigods who reincarnated as humans to improve mankind and bring it closer to God.
  • Benevolent Abomination: Souls who meet the requirements to enter the Tathagata Realm upon death are figments of sentient substance with knowledge of their past and future lives, having attained a level of enlightenment higher than in the Bodhisattva Realm.

    God Eagle
  • Magical Native American: He is the spirit of an ancient Inca shaman and serves as a guide for the four protagonists.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: He has yellow eyes that nod to his nature as an advanced spirit.
  • Spirit Advisor: He guides the four protagonists through the several dimensions of Heaven according to Happy Science beliefs.

    Thomas Edison
  • Historical Hero Upgrade: In this film, he is portrayed as a selfless inventor who sought to improve mankind, contrasting to his real-life reputation as a plagiarist who patented others' inventions. Moreover, this heroic portrayal of Edison goes as far as depicting Johannes Gutenberg and Cai Lun, respective inventors of the printing press and paper, as two of his past lives.

Hell

    SPOILER CHARACTERS

Niches (Friedrich Nietzsche)

  • Historical Villain Upgrade: Being an atheist philosopher, Nietzsche is depicted as a malevolent demon who shouts "God is dead" as his victory catchphrase.
  • Large Ham: He talks in a bombastic way after revealing his demonic self to Ryuta, and even more so when he shouts "God is dead!"
  • Sinister Shades: He is depicted wearing sunglasses that completely obscure his eyes and is a demon hellbent on driving people astray from God.
  • Straw Character: He is depicted as a Dastardly Whiplash who constantly shouts "God is dead". Not to mention a demon seeking to lead humans astray.
  • Sunglasses at Night: This version of Nietzsche always wears sunglasses despite being in a place as dark as Hell.

Hisler (Adolf Hitler)

  • Historical Villain Upgrade: Downplayed. While Hitler is portrayed here as a tyrant, he is also depicted as a violent demon who controls a demonic elephant named Bihimoss, seeking to crush angels for venturing into Hell to save repentant souls.
  • We Didn't Start the Führer: According to this film and Happy Science teachings, Hitler was actually a demon sent from Hell to drive people astray from God and destroy the faithful.
