    Oribe Mutsumi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a_dress_2.png
a.k.a Bug Girl
Voiced by: Mao Ichimichi (JP), Sarah Roach (EN)

Houshou Private High School; 2nd Year, Class 1

A normally quiet girl in class who's secretly a fanatic for insects. It's her and her knowledge of the creepy and the crawly, along with her wilderness survivor know-how, that the group must rely on in order to get them to a safe place and keep them all from dying to the many deadly insects they meet along the way.

  • Apologetic Attacker: She's reduced to tears over having to kill insects, even to save her classmates and herself.
  • Brainy Brunette: Has long brown hair and when it comes to bugs, she's the most reliable.
  • Covert Pervert: Not apparent at the start of the story, but it becomes more noticeable that Matsumi might be more interested in sex then she lets on. This is all but confirmed in the third story arc where she has consensual sex with Julia (although it's mostly a way to make herself look less suspicious) and apparently imagines that she's being molested by a bug resulting in her enjoying the experience a bit to much. She latter on has an actual sex dream involving Julia, and Chitose doming her while her mentor watches.
  • Chekhov's Hobby: Even before using her skill to battle off and kill the island's giant insect population, Mutsumi had displayed some knowledge of how to survive in the wilderness, and her knowledge of a variety of insect types. The captain makes reference to the idea that Mutsumi had just been a loner girl who liked to sit in the back of the class reading about insects.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: Her best friend Naruse Chitose has a crush on her, Matsuoka Ayumi had unrequited feelings for her, and Aoyama Nozomi and Nakasone Kagami both sexually assault her in Dai Kyochuu Rettou. On the third island, Julia also shows attraction to Mutsumi and actively seeks a sexual relationship with her. And, if Mutsumi's dream is anything to go by, the attraction is far from one sided.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: Despite her helpful skills and attitude, this is one of her major flaws. Mutsumi easily forgives the Token Evil Teammate of the group and those who betrayed her, who repay her kindness by either molesting her or almost getting her killed, though others like Suzuki are not so fortunate to survive those she forgives.
  • Friend to Bugs: When she was young she was scared of bugs, but after spending time with Enoki-sensei she eventually became the bug-loving girl we all know. It's to the point where she's initially reluctant to harm any insects — even the giant ones that are eating her classmates — and breaks down in tears apologizing when she's forced to.
  • I Call It "Vera": Calls her beloved backpack "Gomaotto", and occasionally appears to talk to it (although it's implied to be more of a deliberate focusing technique than anything weird). In the manga, it proves invaluable for containing her hiking and insect-collecting supplies and literature, as well as absorbing more than one blow that would've otherwise killed her.
  • Ignored Expert: Whenever her classmates ignore her advice, their survival rate drops from unlikely to nothing.
  • Immodest Orgasm: Apparently has one while having sex with Julia, while imagining the other girl as a giant bug no less.
  • Signature Headgear: Mutsumi wears a very distinguishing hat since the time of her plane crash, and is rarely seen without it since. Also somewhat doubles as a Hat of Authority since she usually ends up in charge of the situation and telling people what to do when the latest insect emergency arises.
  • The Smart Guy: Thanks to all her time sitting in the back of the class reading up on insects, she is well versed in information about them and their habits, along with how to survive in an emergency situation such as being lost in a place with no help for a few days. It is this intelligence that everyone must rely on in order to survive.

    Naruse Chitose
Voiced by: Rika Tachibana (JP), Lizzie Ray (EN)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/naruse_chitose.png

Houshou Private High School; 2nd Year, Class 1

Class representative of Class 1, a righteous-minded girl and best friend of Mutsumi. She seeks to not only survive herself, but stay on the right path and save others as well, even when they may not entirely deserve it.

  • Braids of Action: Her hair is tied in two long braids, and once she has the chance, she proves her badass credentials.
  • Class Representative: She was this back in school, and is even called by the other students.
  • Damsel in Distress: Gets kidnapped by a wasp at the end of the first chapter, forcing Mutsumi to save her and is later tied up by Misuzu and Kamijo. Then in the sequel manga, she is basically taken hostage by Kyousuke and his followers as a means to try to control Mutsumi.
  • Going Commando: Because Misuzu took off her panties and then a crab ate them, she's forced to walk this way.
  • Heroic Seductress: Forced into acting as this in the sequel manga in order to protect Mutsumi from Kyousuke.
  • Immodest Orgasm: Kyosuke forces her to have one during his sexual assault. Also counts as a Forceful Orgasm as, unlike with Toki, it's a very unpleasant experience for her.
  • The Lancer: Not only she's Mutsumi's closest friend, she's the one who follows her advice the most.
  • Ms. Fanservice: While almost all the girls can be considered this, Chitose is probably the most noticeable in that the artist seems to constantly draw her in borderline centerfold poses and revealing outfits as much as possible. The fact that her sexual assault scene is very gratuitous and drawn out also lends to the idea of her being this.
  • Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality: Downplayed in that she simply seems to have a rather negative view on sex, or at least people who use sex to get what they want. The fact that none of her own sexual experiences so far have been consensual in any way probably doesn't help.
  • Put on a Bus: Reluctantly leaves the plot at the start of the third arc, unaware that Mutsumi is still attempting to solve the mystery of the giant insects until she is already on the plane home.
  • Rape as Drama: Kyosuke holds her at gunpoint and forces her to give him a blow job and sexually assaults her while his comrades force Mutsumi to watch. He is only stopped from doing worse after being interrupted by the sound of gunfire.

    Matsuoka Ayumi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a_dress_2_0.png
Captain
Voiced by: Misato Fukuen (JP), Brittney Karbowski (EN)

Houshou Private High School; 2nd Year, Class 1

Captain of the school softball team, an athletic girl with a kind heart, but a no-nonsense attitude along with it. She always puts herself at the forefront of the action when it comes to helping people, or staving off the latest insect threat.

  • Butch Lesbian: Only when compared to Mami. Besides being something of a tomboy, she's not really a butch.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Protects Mami from the firefly larvae at the cost of her life.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: She's one of the tallest girls in the group.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: The English dub has her drop curse words pretty frequently, especially "fuck."
  • Lesbian Jock: An atheltic tomboy who likes other girls.
  • Sacrificial Lion: She was the first person in Mutsumi's group and lasted for several chapters, only to die to protect the one she grew to care about.

    Jinno Misuzu
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/misuzu_jinno_90035.jpg
Voiced by: Chiaki Takahashi (JP), Amber Lee Connors (EN)

Houshou Private High School; 2nd Year, Class 1

A lewd-behaving girl whose sole interest lies in her own survival. Is not afraid to use any means at her disposal, including her own body and even other people, in order to get her way.

  • Death Equals Redemption: Unlike Kamijou, Misuzu shows that her humanity is still intact when she sacrifices herself to save her group. Mami, who is among her primary victim, even mourns her death.
  • Depraved Bisexual: She has sex with multiple men, but also molests Mami and tries to rape Chitose.
  • Enemy Mine: She initially conspires with Kamijo against Mutsumi, but when it becomes clear that keeping Mutsumi alive is her best chance at surviving she changes sides.
  • Evil Redhead: Not necessarily evil, but acts like a bitch a lot of the time, and is willing to sacrifice others if it means her own survival. This trait mellows out somewhat as the story progresses, to the point where she sacrifices herself so the others can escape.
  • Face Death with Dignity: When she comes face-to-face with a giant centipede, Misuzu shows no fear and swings her axe at the centipede just as the ship she is on explodes.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Misuzu started off as a bullying Alpha Bitch who has conspire with Kamijo to get Mutsumi killed but she eventually pull her own weight for the group and even perform a Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: When the giant centipede attacks the ship while the group is trying to escape, Jinno sacrifices herself to distract it and blow the ship up.
  • Lady Swears-a-Lot: The English dub has her drop curse words far more frequently than in the original, more so than Ayumi, especially words like "shit" and "fuck."
  • Sextra Credit: Was spotted having sex with one of her teachers by Chitose in order to get a good grade on an upcoming test.
  • Stripperiffic: At first she wore a jacket, but once she loses it to giant crabs, she spends the rest of her time wearing only a tank-top with no bra, tiny shorts and boots.

    Kamijo Atsushi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/atsushi_kamijo_90037.jpg
Voiced by: Wataru Komada (JP), Lanipator (EN)

Houshou Private High School; 2nd Year, Class 5

A delinquent who aims to be the group's leader, and will try to do so in any situation by any means. No matter what the situation may be or who he endangers with his rash actions.

  • Black Eyes of Evil: His eyes turn solid black after he's anally raped and impregnated by giant botflies.
  • Eaten Alive: He's impregnated by giant botfly larvae that eat him from the inside out before bursting from his distended abdomen.
  • Hate Sink: Sure they are a few in the group but Kamijou stands out as the most despicable of them all. Not only he attempted to get Mutsumi killed on more than one occassion, he had molested several girls and even blackmails them to becoming his Sex Slave with the promise of protection.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After threatening Suzuki into having sex with him, he's anally raped by a giant botfly. Unfortunately, Suzuki suffers a similar fate.
  • Leader Wannabe: He immediately proclaims himself leader, but all he does is being a petty thug and walk straight into danger. The only reason he lasts so long is that he begrudgingly started following Mutsumi's orders.
  • The Load: As soon as a stinkbug bites him, he whines and becomes totally useless.
  • Morality Chain: The only person he ever showed genuine care was his friend Akira, and he became infinitely worse the moment he died.
  • Sanity Slippage: While already a nasty person, he becomes increasingly unhinged as the story progresses.
  • Sex Signals Death: He blackmails Suzuki into having sex with him, leading to them both being raped and impregnated by giant botflies, whose larvae eat them from the inside-out.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Acts as if he's a badass who everyone should obey, but he's nothing more than a stupid thug that only survives for so long thanks to dumb luck and the fact Mutsumi won't let him die.
  • The Starscream: Attempted several times to unsurp leadership over Mutsumi.
  • Token Evil Teammate: While the is not the only one, Kamijou is definately the worst of them.
  • Too Dumb to Live: While his stupidity had already gotten him into trouble before, his final one takes the grand prize: Mutsumi warns him they need to keep the fire going so the smoke scares off the insects, and that they're attracted to sweat and carbon dioxide. So what does he do? Forcing Suzuki to have sex with him (which obviously involves lots of sweat and breathing), and then they both fall asleep. Three guesses what happened next, and the first two don't count.

    Miura Mami
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miura_mami.png
Voiced by: Momo Asakura (JP), Kayli Mills (EN)

A popular idol who attends the school, is the object of adoration by many of her male (and some female) classmates. Though physically and emotionally weak, and not adept to the harsh wilderness of the island, she is still intent on surviving by any means necessary.

  • Alliterative Name: Mami Miura
  • Ambiguously Bi: Began a relationship with Matsuoka in exchange for protection, but it's uncertain if she really swings that way, or if she was just using her sex appeal and Matsuoka's sexuality to manipulate Matsuoka into protecting her. Notably, she is one of the few long running females to show no sexual attraction whatsoever to Oribe. Later, on the second island, she shows immediate and obvious attraction to the guy fixing their potential getaway boat, only to become weirded out when she hears about his reputation for "pumping and dumping".
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She doesn't hesitate to turn the tables on Misuzu, who bullied her, and flashes a nasty Slasher Smile.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Urinates herself when she sees the Protohermes Grandis splitting Shirakawa in half.
  • Precision F-Strike: While not a Lady Swears-a-Lot, the English dub has her drop a few curse words for added comedic or dramatic effect, such as "That knife didn't do fucking jack shit!" or "I refuse to fuck you if I die!"
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: Hair is a pretty shade of bubblegum pink, though slightly subverted as, even though she may act this way with most people, she also has a darker, more manipulative side.
  • Teen Idol: She's a fairly popular one, due to her cute nature.
  • Idol Singer: Mami has made mention that she has produced a CD that has sold an impressive amount of copies, and is fairly famous in their school.
  • Rape as Drama: Was pimped out by her own idol office and raped by an idol industry executive.
  • Sanity Slippage: When Matsuoka dies protecting her from firefly larvae, Mami snaps and blames Marika and Nozomi for not letting them inside the cabin.
  • Survivor's Guilt: Blames herself for Matsuoka's untimely death, since she died saving her.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Becomes a gun toting badass in the sequel, and she and Kai are the only characters of Oribe's group using guns consistently in the sequel.

    Kai Kazuhiko
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kai_69.png
Voiced by: Takuya Eguchi (JP), Alejandro Saab (EN)

Houshou Private High School; 2nd Year, Class 4

A seemingly self-interested punk who only aims for his own survival, often ends up playing an integral role of the group's survival due to his quick thinking and technical know-how.

  • Alliterative Name: Kazuhiko Kai
  • Death Glare: Delivers a particularly evil one after stopping a survivor from attempting to rape Mutsumi.
  • Dreadlock Rasta: Though not especially known for being a delinquent, Kai has shown some disdain for authority figures and a bit of a laid-back attitude. Though he has been shown to also have hung out with the likes of Leader while in normal school, which contributes to his usual image of being something of a punk.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Initially he acted vaguely wishy-washy about his allegiances, only seeming interested in his own survival, Kai goes on to prove himself as a steadfast ally to Mutsumi's group, going out of his way to help other people even when it may endanger himself. Even back when he was in school, he was shown to want to help people being bullied.
  • Master of Unlocking: Was the one to get the group into the hospital initially, claiming he got in through an open window, but he reveals later on that he had actually picked the lock on the hospital door and just lied about it. He claims that things like this are his specialty.
  • The One Guy: He's the only known male who escapes the first island.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: He shows utter contempt for Usui for trying to rape Mutsumi.
  • The So-Called Coward: Kai prefers to mostly stay out of anything that might put himself at risk, but when one of his friends is in danger, he is shown to be one of the ones most willing to help and quickly formulates ideas to contribute to saving the group.

    Shirakawa Miki

Houshou Private High School, 2nd Year, Class 2

A shy, quiet girl in the group, an alert girl with good hearing due to her timid nature. She has a grandmother at home who is diabetic.

  • Adapted Out: She's completely absent in the anime series. Considering her lack of importance in the overall story, it's hard to notice.
  • Half the Man He Used to Be: The way she dies at the pincers of the Protohermes Grandis.
  • The Quiet One: Not very talkative.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: As soon as we learn more about her, a dobsonfly chews her in half.

    Inou Ai
Voiced by: Yurika Kubo (JP), Sarah Wiedenheft (EN)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/393530.jpg

Houshou Private High School; 2nd Year, Class 2

An energetic girl from the school Wandervogel Club, knows how to make simple maps. The first casualty to the giant insects.

  • Bring My Brown Pants: Pisses herself when the giant swallowtail butterflies are about to suck her fluids.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Having your insides sucked out by a swallowtail butterfly via Orifice Invasion is not a pretty way to go, and it shows what's about to come.
  • Nice Girl: What little personality she showed was a general friendliness and optimism.
  • Orifice Invasion: Her death sets the tone of the series, and involves a giant swallowtail butterfly stabbing her in the crotch with its proboscis and sucking out her insides. In the anime she's attacked by two Swallowtails, one of which puts its proboscis in her thigh, while another puts it down her throat.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: As one of the first casualties of the giant insects, she got very little time to show much character before she died.

    Oda Satoshi
Voiced by: Ryōta Suzuki (JP), Yong Yea (EN)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/oda_satoshi_manga.png

Houshou Private High School; 2nd Year, Class 3

An overweight boy in the group, one of the earliest casualties to the giant insects.

  • Otaku: Is not seen doing anything otaku-ish, but is mentioned as one by one of the group members.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Due to his sudden death in early chapters while trying to save Mami.

Marika-sensei's Group

    Chuujou Marika

Houshou Private High School; Homeroom Teacher of 2nd Year, Class 5

Seemingly the only adult left alive on the island, a stubborn woman who seeks to take charge of all of the students and dislikes any perceived challenges to her authority, even when the people questioning her actions might have a point.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: She's seen during the airport scene at the beginning of the movie.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Wets herself as she watches Usui die.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: She's ripped to pieces by the thread of the panicking trap-door spider.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: The anime movie gives her dark purple hair and purple eyes.
  • Drunk with Power: Flashbacks and internal monologuing from Chitose implied she used to be a Reasonable Authority Figure. Chitose even hypothesizes that abruptly obtaining the power of life and death over the students and being forced to watch some of them die gruesomely caused her to snap.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: She finally decides to start listening to Mutsumi after they are captured by a trapdoor spider. Unfortunately for her, she ends up dying soon afterward.
  • Leader Wannabe: She tries to take charge, but is pretty clear she's callous and utterly useless to lead the students.
  • The Load: Her stubborn refusal to listen Mutsumi and her obsession with safety leads to several unnecessary deaths.
  • Not Now, Kiddo: Marika evokes a far more callous variant, dismissing Mutsumi out of hand due to her only being 15.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: While she wasn't much better, when she kicked Nozawa over the cliff you might have cheered a bit.

    Aoyama Nozomi

Houshou Private High School; 2nd Year, Class 4

A girl who is extremely loyal to Marika due to being saved from Miss Nozawa by her. Aoyama Nozomi is willing to defend Marika's actions and even threaten others when it seems they might let her be harmed or question Marika's authority.

  • Attempted Rape: In Dai Kyochuu Rettou, she forces herself on Oribe in the hallway of a beach showering facility, only to be stopped by Chitose. Ironically, she saves Oribe from being raped by Nakasone Kagami after Oribe passes out from drinking strong booze.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Wets herself when she finds herself surrounded on three sides by hungry rhino beetles.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Her low self-esteem and desire to be loved are what lead her to become Nozawa's sex toy and later Marika's loony supporter. Now she has transferred her affections towards the one who saved her, Mutsumi Oribe.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Combined with Love Makes You Crazy, since she loses most of her sanity in her desire to kill Mutsumi for (indirectly and unintentionally) leading Marika's death.
  • The Millstone: At first she was only an annoying deadweight because of her blinding devotion to Marika, but after losing her marbles she turns into a very dangerous and vindictive deadweight, actively trying to murder Oribe, totally disregarding that it may and would endanger the entire group, as well as herself.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: When she tries to scare off the trap door spider using the recorded wasp sounds, the cornered arthropod ends up tightening its thread so much it rips Marika to pieces.
  • Replacement Goldfish: In Dai Kyochuu Rettou she asks Oribe to be a replacement for Marika as she forces herself on her.
  • Sanity Slippage: She initially acted as Marika's Number Two, stubbornly ignoring Oribe's warnings and advice. After Marika is killed, Nozomi snaps and repeatedly tries to kill Oribe, blaming her for her lover's death. After the group arrives on a new island, however, she declares that she wants Oribe to be Marika's replacement before sexually assaulting her.
  • Please, I Will Do Anything!: Says this trope word for word when trying to convince Kai to aid her in rescuing Marika from the enormous spider and follows through with it by pushing him down and having sex with him in front of the shrine.
  • Stupid Evil: Puts Marika's severed hand on Mutsumi's bag in order to attract giant bugs, despite it being obvious those same insects would also kill her and everyone else. She later tries to push Mutsumi onto a pile of millipedes in order to poison her, only to end up falling herself. This is while a giant centipede is nearby.
  • Trouble Magnet Gambit: Her plan to kill Matsumi using Marika's severed hand ends up almost getting her and everyone else killed.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: While the attraction is one-sided on Nozomi's part, after passing out from drinking moonshine, Nozomi regains consciousness to see Nakasone Kagami stripping a half-conscious and unwilling Oribe naked and preparing to eat her out. Nozomi promptly bashes Nakasone over the head with a folding chair, and remains hostile (and jealous) towards her.

    Momosaki Kasumi

Houshou Private High School; 2nd Year, Class 3

  • Character Development: Becomes much less bitchy in the second manga, and comes to believe in Oribe and the others as her friends.
  • The Load: Almost as bad as Mami, constantly getting scared, running off and whining about the situation.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Although she is introduced as Rich Bitch, in the second manga she does grow to care about her friends and absolutely will not betray them even when threaten with death.
  • Ojou Ringlets: The ends of her hair have curls, and it fits her rich upbringing.
  • Rich Bitch: Seems to come from a wealthy family, and is quite bitchy at first.
  • Shameful Strip: Forced to strip naked and is almost raped by Kamijo, luckily the scarab beetles interrupt the attempt.
    • It later happens to her again in the second manga.

    Suzuki Kayo
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kayo_suzuki_193785.jpg

Houshou Private High School; 2nd Year, Class 2

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: She's seen during the airport scene at the beginning of the movie.
  • Black Eyes of Evil: Her eyes turn solid black after she's impregnated by the botflies.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: She's raped by two giant botflies, the larvae of which burst by the dozen from her abdomen. It's just as nasty as it sounds.
  • Eaten Alive: She's impregnated by giant botfly larvae that eat her from the inside out before bursting from her distended abdomen.
  • Mauve Shirt: Lasts for several chapters, but as soon as she gets some spotlight, things get nasty.
  • Rape as Drama: Kamijo threatens her into having sex with him and they fall asleep together. When they wake up they're attacked by giant botflies, one of which stabs its ovipositor into her vagina and the other stabs its ovipositor into her throat as she begs for Oribe to come save her. In the next few chapters, she's shown being impregnated with the botflies' larvae, expanding her torso to disgusting levels and resulting in them bursting from her body, killing her.
  • Sex Signals Death: Kamijo blackmails her into having sex with him, leading to them both being raped and impregnated by giant botflies, whose larvae eat them from the inside-out.
  • Shrinking Violet: She doesn't seem to have a very strong will and blames herself for not being as useful as other survivors.
  • Signature Headgear: Wears a hairband, which is her most outstanding feature.
  • Those Two Guys: She and Emiko are quite close and are often seen together. She's utterly devastated when Emiko dies.

    Minowa Takeshi

Houshou Private High School; 2nd Year, Class 5

A tall, strong student and member of the school Judo Club and a National Polity Strengthening member.

  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Gets his innards liquified and then sucked dry by the trap door spider.
  • Gentle Giant: Pretty big, but is generally a reasonable guy. He also has the odd distinction of not being a rapist.
  • Mauve Shirt: Lasts for some chapters, and then he's killed by the trap door spider.

    Miyasono Emiko
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/emiko_miyazono_181024.jpg
Voiced by: Chikako Sugimura (JP), Michaela Laws (EN)

Houshou Private High School; 2nd Year, Class 4

    Usui Ryou

Houshou Private High School; 2nd Year, Class 2

  • Asshole Victim: He gets killed and eaten by fireflies; due to his prior behaviour and reason why he was attacked to begin with, few would miss him.
  • Attempted Rape: He grabs Mutsumi and tries to rape her while the group is walking at night, but is stopped by Chitose and Kai.
  • Casanova Wannabe: He's fairly handsome and thinks he's the hottest boy in the school and hits on every girl he meets, but he has a reputation for being scum and is coldly rebuked off.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Just as it seems like he might get a Karma Houdini over trying to rape Mutsumi — Nozomi disregarding Chitose's accusations and blaming Mutsumi for holding the group up — he's eaten by a swarm of firefly larvae.
  • Slashed Throat: One of the fireflies chews on his carotid artery, killing him within seconds.
  • Too Dumb to Live: He blindly rushes to the forest (ignoring warnings), mistaking the fireflies for other survivors; as result, he gets attacked, killed and devoured.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: All we know is he's a pervert and wannabe rapist, before dying to firefly larvae.

    Miss Nozawa
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ms_nozawa_181025.jpg
Voiced by: Asumi Yoneyama

Art teacher of Houshou Private High School, was killed by ticks after being pushed off a cliff by Marika.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: She's seen during the airport scene at the beginning of the movie.
  • Asshole Victim: Her way of death is rather horrible, but once you find out what she did to Aoyama, you'll probably won't feel sorry about her fate.
  • Beauty Is Bad: Physically attractive and sexually depraved.
  • Four Eyes, Zero Soul: Wore glasses and was a blackmailer and depraved molester.
  • Last-Name Basis: Her first name was never mentioned.
  • Posthumous Character: We originally meet her already moments away from death, sucked dry by giant ticks fully covering her face; she wouldn't be properly introduced until much later, in a flashback explaining how she ended up in such a situation, as well as showing why such fate was well deserved.
  • Sadistic Teacher: Blackmailed and molested Aoyama and even forced her to pose nude for her art class against her will.

Rescue Team

    Shikimori Ryoko
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/dkr_ryouko.JPG
Shikimori Ryoko

Coast Guard officer who arrived on her boat to investigate the island the rest of the characters landed on. She ends up helping to rescue the survivors. However, her ship is destroyed and her crew killed due to a terminal case of Lawful Stupid, leaving her as the only survivor.

  • Lawful Stupid: She had it just as bad as the rest of the crew on her ship, but, thankfully, she quickly started growing out of it.
    • Unfortunately, it comes roaring right back in the sequel, as she consistently tries to prevent Kai and Mami from pointing guns at people who are already pointing guns at them and taking people hostage. Predictably, this gets her shot in a tense standoff.
  • Only Sane Man: Of her ship's crew, the only one to realize the gravity of the situation and start reacting accordingly. She's also one of the few characters to start listening to Oribe immediately and never questions here expertise about bugs. Subverted later when being a stickler for the law means she fails to grasp that when hostile people are waving guns at you, you should wave guns at them back.
  • Sixth Ranger: Joins the rest of the cast near the end of the first manga, and remains with them into the second.

    Pops

    Zensan

Tatsuno Kami Island

    Nakumo Hyoue
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ygdei2lwevak.png

    Kyousuke
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/56np3gepzpre.png
Kyousuke
  • Arc Villain: He is the main human antagonist for the Tatsuno Kami Island arc. Although in practice, he is a Big Bad Wannabe compare to the giant insects.
  • He Who Fights Monsters: When survivors from other islands repay the islanders kindness by stealing their supplies and raping the women, Kyousuke and his group become wary of survivors. He end up doing the same by sexually assaulting Toki, Mutsumi and Chitose.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Becomes a somewhat better person after his failed escape and going into a Villainous BSoD, even forgoing a second escape so as to save Nakumo after he gets injured.
  • Hypocrite: He doesn't trusts outsiders because they are being Ungrateful Bastard who raped the women of the island. Not only does Kyousuke constantly betrays Mutsumi every time she saves him, he also sexually assaulted Toki, Mutsumi and Chitose.
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: Subjects Chitose to this as she sacrificed herself to stop him from raping Mutsumi.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After abandoning everyone else in an attempt to escape from the island, the boat he's one ends up crashing and he's forced to swim back.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Kyousuke stands out as the worst of the series. While the islanders have reasons not to trust outsiders, Kyousuke betrays Mutsumi's group several times even after Mutsumi saves his ass. When he does finally acknowledge Mutsumi as a person of value for his group's survival, he plans to assert his dominance over her through sexual assault. Although he ends up settling for taking Chitose hostage to make Mutsumi subservient to him.
  • Villainous BSoD: Has a major one when he gets literally showered with Shimousa's remains after the latter gets ripped apart by the giant dragonflies.

    Shimousa

Pretty Boy
  • All for Nothing: Sends Mutsumi and her group to go get batteries for the boat, but it is later reveled that batteries were already on the dock. Meaning that he sent them into a dangerous situation for no reason, other than to spend more time alone with Chitose.
  • Attempted Rape: Tries to rape Chitose, blatantly ignoring her multiple demands for him to stop. He is thankfully stopped by Toki who hits him with a bamboo sword.
  • Asshole Victim: After sending Mutsumi on a wild goose chase and threatening to leave the others on the island if Chitose didn't sleep with him not many readers cried when he was killed. Some even cheered.
  • Chick Magnet: Norika and Kagami state him to be this to the girls that were on the island
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Gets graphically dismembered by a giant dragonfly, leaving Kyousuke in complete shock.
  • The Engineer: He is the only one who knows how to fix and operate the ships on the island
  • Evil Is Petty: After he is prevented from raping Chitose he happily informs Kyousuke of the brand new batteries he had stashed away, all but assuring that Mutsumi's group would be left on the island.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Its pretty clear that none of the Tatsuno Kami Island survivors like this guy due to him being a lecherous Glorified Sperm Donor. They only tolerate him because he is the only person left on the island that can fix and operate their escape ship.
  • Glorified Sperm Donor: He is very notorious for impregnating every woman he has ever slept with but would never stick around to take care of his children. The Tatsuno Kami Island survivors have admitted that they are not sure how many children he has fathered at this point, and warn the women of Mutsumi's group not to go near him unless they want to end up pregnant. When performing Sexual Extortion on Chitose, he makes it very clear that he plans to knock her up.
  • Pretty Boy: As noted by the girls he is a very handsome man
  • Sexual Extortion: He basically forces Chitose to have sex with him by threatening to leave her friends on the island.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ej0tew91ojyo.png
  • The Dragon: She is the right-hand woman to Kyousuke.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Becomes furious when Kyousuke abandons her while trying to escape from the island. She gives him a well-deserved punch in the face when he returns from his botched escape.
  • Shipper on Deck: She supports Kagami's romantic pursuit of Mutsumi, but ends up giving Kagami some very bad "love advice" about Sex Equals Love that resulted in Kagami trying to take advantage of a drunken Mutsumi.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/o5l25byziz9n.png
Nakasone Kagami
  • Action Girl: She is one of the most capable fighters among the Tatsuno Kami Island survivors, and would act as Mutsumi's protector during her time on the second island.
  • Amazonian Beauty: She is a tall and fairly muscular young woman, and is physically the strongest female survivor within her group.
  • Attempted Rape: She tried to take advantage of Mutsumi while she was drunk on moonshine in Chapter 5 of the sequel manga. Although her attempt is the least malicious example in this series, as Kagami foolishly believed Norika's "romantic advice" that was basically a combination of "Not If They Enjoyed It" Rationalization and Sex Equals Love. Nozomi stopped Kagami by hitting her in the head with a folding chair before she took it too far. After realizing that Norika's claims were false, Kagami apologized to Mutsumi for her actions, and keeps it in her pants for the rest of the arc.
  • Butch Lesbian: Rather tomboyish and has shown attraction towards Mutsumi.
  • Moment of Weakness: Her Attempted Rape of Mutsumi is treated as this. Kagami naively believed Norika's bad "love advice" that she could get Mutsumi to fall in love with her if she simply had sex with Mutsumi while she was drunk. Thankfully, Kagami was stopped by Nozomi before things went too far, and she sincerely apologized for her actions shortly afterwards. Kagami makes it up to Mutsumi by being one of her most dependable allies for the rest of the Tatsuno Kami Island arc.
  • Native Guide: Takes over this role for Mutsumi and her group during their time on Tatsuno Kami Island.
  • Tank-Top Tomboy: She wears a midriff-baring tank top and she's rather tomboyish.

Shrine Maiden

  • Extreme Doormat: Even though she disagrees with what Kyousuke and his group do she goes along with it because she is scared of him. She gets over this to an extent when she stops Shimousa from raping Chitose.
  • Immodest Orgasm: Has one when Kyousuke sexually assaults her
  • Miko: She wears a traditional shrine maiden outfit and works at the shrine on the island

    Niigaki Chisato

  • Office Lady: She looks to be this a she is a government worker
  • Orifice Invasion: She dies this way as horsehair worms enter her mouth and possibly "other areas" and kill her.
  • Too Dumb to Live: When something is moving inside the dead mantises' bellies, instead of alerting Mutusmi (the bug expert) she goes to check it out for herself. She dies due to this when the horsehair worms come out and enter her body effectively suffocating her.

    Nakumo Aoi
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aoiedit.png
She is Nakumo Hyoue's ill sister and seemingly an influential person on the island.
  • Loved by All: She is seemingly loved and respected by all the characters on the island, even Kyousuke's group. She's loved to the extent that generally immoral characters like Kyouske are willing to risk their lives for her.
  • Morality Pet: Is this to Kyousuke's group as they stop their bad behavior when she is around

    Maeda and Shige
An elderly couple holding up at the high school.
  • Dead Hat Shot: Maeda's torn and bloodied hat was found by the other survivors at school, confirming his death.
  • Extreme Doormat: Shige is implied to be one as she easily submitted to Maeda when he yell at her.
  • Too Dumb to Live: After being spooked by a praying mantis outside a window, Maeda and Shige run out of the safety of the school and are killed not long after taking a few steps from the gates.
  • Unwitting Instigatorof Doom: The both of them opening the school doors and going outside is what allowed the mantises to enter the school and cause the ensuing tragedy.

Tatsuno Oshima

     Amamiya

The president of an up-and-coming company who claims his dream is to end world hunger and is the one responsible for the outbreak of giant insects.

Kiyomushi Sanmiyaku Characters

The cast of a spin-off manga set in the same universe as the main series. It follows a group of college students as they struggle against the giant insects while in the mountains.

     Tsuyoshi Jinguji
A second-year university student and the main protagonist of "Kiyomushi Sanmiyaku". He joined in on the trip to the mountains after promising to act as the designated driver/bodyguard of his best friend, Kukuri. He's a member of the wrestling club.
  • Combat Pragmatist: He always thinks on the fly when fighting the giant bugs. He learned to sense danger and dodge quickly from his time in the wrestling club.
  • Cowardly Lion: He's understandably scared out of his wits when facing the giant insects trying to kill him, but he willingly puts his life on the line to protect his love interest, Kukuri.
  • David Versus Goliath: Almost all of his battles with insects are this.
  • Imagine Spot: Sometimes he imagines himself saying something courageous, contrary to reality. At one point, he imagines getting away with being an Accidental Pervert.

     Kukuri Minamiyama
A second-year university student who is obsessed with the occult. She joined the trip to the mountains after being told it would be a test of courage but asked Jinguji to come and make her feel safe.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: When other girls give Tsuyoshi attention, she gets upset.
  • Love Interest: She's the object of Tsuyoshi's affection and his main motivation to fight the giant insects.
  • Perky Goth: She dresses in a gothic lolita fashion, but is cheerful and kind.
  • Protectorate: To Tsuyoshi, since he's made it his mission to protect her from the bugs.

     Masaru Shinozuka
A popular "V-tuber" and third-year university student. He was the one who invited everyone up to the mountains under the pretense that it was a test of courage but had ulterior motives and was planning to use Kukuri and Shino for a snuff film. Was kicked off the rugby team for violent behavior.
  • Camera Fiend: He's always got his video camera on hand for gory action.
  • Hate Sink: He's a violent jock, blackmailer, and rapist. Big surprise he'd be this trope. It also comes as a surprising subversion later when Masaru gets Character Development and performs a Heroic Sacrifice.
  • Jerk Jock: He's got a violent streak, which got him kicked out of the rugby team. He also shows little care for his group so long as he's got good footage.
  • Would Hit a Girl: He hits Etsuko when she protests against going into the mountains. He's also shown to violate her for his shady porn films.

     Shino Wakao
A second-year university student and President of the school's Ninja Research Club. She is often the most proactive during dangerous situations and has a rather old-fashioned manner of speech.
  • Amazonian Beauty: She's fairly attractive, and ripped beneath her clothes.
  • Nice Girl: One of Shino's first actions was to compliment Tsuyoshi for his training regime.
  • Ninja: The theme of her character, as she is the president of Nina Research Club. She even uses the "degozaru" character tic.
  • The Stoic: Her expression is always collected, even in deadly situations.

     Etsuko Hayashida
A second-year university student and member of the flower arrangement club. She was blackmailed by Masaru into helping him film his snuff film.
  • Grew a Spine: At first, she is too scared to resist him, but as time passes, she starts to act mean to Masaru. This comes from realizing that he's not as intimidating as he projects, compared to the giant man-eating insects the group encounters.
  • Jerkass to One: While she's normally friendly to the other survivors, Etsuko starts to demean Masaru upon realizing she no longer has anything to fear from him when he's useless against the insects and tells as much to his face. Justified, since he blackmailed and regularly abused her, and now they're in worse circumstances.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She fills this role for the spin-off series, albeit reluctantly. Unsurprisingly, she's wearing a revealing outfit because Masaru told her to.
  • Screaming Woman: She's the one frequently screaming and cowering at the sight of giant insects.
  • Shrinking Violet: Etsuko is timid and cowardly. This made her easy prey for Masaru. She starts to grow out of this.
  • Rape as Drama: Masaru drugged and recorded a dirty film of her, and uses it as blackmail material to make her do his bidding, which includes non-consensual sex.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: Justified later on, as the stress of constant danger wears her nerves thin.

Other Characters

    Enoki Inaho
Voiced by: Marina Inoue (JP), Elsie Lovelock (EN)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/393533.jpg

An entomologist who befriended Mutsumi and taught her everything there is to know about insects. She was the main character of the author's previous work Vector Case Files.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance: Mutsumi thinks about her in the OVA long before she was mentioned in the manga.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: She was capable of targeting the weak points of a thug just by observing his body language and constitution.
  • Badass Teacher: She might not have fighting skills (that we know of) but she certainly knows about knots. Kyomushi Sanmyaku shows she's very good at reading both insect and human movements to avoid and target weak points.
  • Hero of Another Story: She's one of the main characters of the spin-off Kyomushi Sanmyaku.
  • Hot Teacher: Unlike Nozawa and Chuujou, she wasn't a case of Beauty Is Bad.
  • Friend to Bugs: The one who instilled Mutsumi's passion for insects and other bugs.
  • The Mentor: To Oribe, and later Tsuyoshi.
  • Transplant: Inaho's original appearance was in Saikachi - Manatsu no Konchuu Kakutouki, and then she became the protagonist of its sequel before being introduced to Island of Giant Insects, which takes place in a different universe.
