- Adaptational Angst Upgrade: A lot of bad stuff happens in Wallace's backstory: his parents die, Sootopolis City is pressuring him to be the perfect guardian, he's seen as a freak by his peers, and all of that leads to him developing very unhealthy coping skills.
- Adaptational Gender Identity: In the Facadeverse, Wallace is a genderqueer male and uses both he/him and they/them pronouns.
- Adaptational Sexuality: He's pansexual in this universe.
- The Alcoholic: In college, he drinks to the point of blacking out to numb his emotions.
- Recovered Addict: Thankfully, he's gotten treatment since.
- Broken Ace: He's a very smart and powerful Trainer and Coordinator, and he's the guardian of Sootopolis City. Beneath the Mask, however, he's struggling to keep his facade perfect, turning to alcohol, starving, and self-induced vomiting to cope with the crushing expectations placed on him.

Winona
Gym Leader of Fortree City.
- Caged Bird Metaphor: Winona lives a very sheltered life until she starts her journey (and even when she does, she starts it later than most kids) and goes to college. From College - Winona:Winona had a very sheltered upbringing, so when she finally became an adult and went to college, she felt free. In some ways, she felt like a bird finally allowed to fly after being trapped in a cage for so long.In other ways, she felt like a bird that had never learned to fly being thrown out of the nest.
- Claustrophobia: Implied in Home - Winona in BHWIB. It's one of the reasons why she doesn't spend much time in her home.

- Arranged Marriage: As part of his attempts to puppeteer Wallace into the perfect guardian and figurehead of Sootopolis City, Megalos tries to betroth him every rich, influential woman in the city. But then Wallace meets a certain Gym Leader from Fortree City...
- Ultimate Authority Mayor: To the point where he essentially uses Wallace as a puppet, trying to set him up with wealthy Sootopolitan women and making him the perfect leader.
Theresa
Winona's elder sister, Richard's husband, and Kahili's mother.
- Alcoholic Parent: She has no qualms about getting drunk in front of her daughter.
- Hard-Drinking Party Girl: She's a wealthy socialite who loves going out to parties and drinking.
- In Vino Veritas: In In the echo of the ocean, she makes jabs at Wallace and Winona's sex life without hesitation. Under the influence, she uses full-on slurs and dehumanizing "it".
