     Main Characters

Jose Carlos

The main character. A short, nerdy and plain-looking 14 year old teenager, Jose Carlos wants to be a writer, but his father forces him to compete on cycling. He seems to be fond of philosophical musings or just "zoning out" and staring at stuff, which he describes in his diary. His main flaw, except for his tendency to look down on others, is that he is very trusting, naive and closed-minded. At first, Jose Carlos often thinks the harsh world works like it does in romantic fairytales. Needless to say, certain events change that, especially after meeting his First Love...

  • Author Avatar: According to Word of God.
  • Bad Liar: According to Mario, and it's an Overused Running Gag. Justified, since they are childhood friends and he is the one who knows him the most.
  • Break the Cutie: Jose Carlos has the wrong idea about the world he lives in. His experiences in the books make sure to teach him that the world is a cruel place.
  • Chick Magnet: Though he is not interested.
  • Childhood Friends: With Mario, as revealed in the second book.
  • Cool Big Bro: To his younger siblings, Pilar and Cuauhtemoc.
  • Deconstructed Trope: He is a deconstruction of the Ordinary High-School Student and The Ingenue.
    • While his naivety and innocence only serve to make his life hell.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Towards Sheccid.
  • Everyone Can See It: When he was in high school, it was obvious to everyone that he had a crush on Sheccid.
  • First-Person Smartass: On occasion, in the books.
  • Good Is Dumb: His niceness usually leads him to do very stupid things. He even says he gets called an idiot a lot.
  • Happily Married: To Ivonne in the final book.
  • Horrible Judge of Character: He begins as one. He's even determined to see Sheccid as Princess Classic. As soon as he sees her true colours, his worldview shatters so badly that he snaps.
    • Luckily, in the second book, he grows out of this and manages to judge people somewhat more accurately.
  • Inner Monologue: He tends to go to his Happy Place and write stories when things don't go according to his wishes.
  • Last Minute Hook Up: With a girl called Ivonne, after he decides to forget Sheccid/Lorenna once and for all.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: To Sheccid/Lorenna, as revealed in the third book.
  • Love at First Sight: He fell in love with Sheccid the moment he first saw her, because she resembles a princess from a fairytale he read before. This is the same reason he falls for Ivonne too.
    • Loving a Shadow: Eventually Deconstructed. He only loved Sheccid/ Lorenna because he thought of her as the embodiment of Sheccid, the princess from the fairytale and his ideal of the perfect woman. Ivonne eventually fills this role.
  • Meaningful Name: His diary Conflictos, Creencias y Sueños (Conflics, Believes and Dreams) is a pun to Carlos Cuauhtémoc Sánchez.
  • Prone to Tears: He cries a lot.
  • Shrinking Violet: As a child.
  • Skyward Scream: After finding out that his beloved Sheccid is a drug addict ( when it was only an identical cousin), he does this in front of a concerned Ariadne.
  • This Is Reality: What every character says to him.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: In the second book, when Sheccid tells him that she wants nothing with him for once and for all and he starts listening to his Toxic Friend Influence Mariscal Adalid.
  • Unreliable Narrator: He is a master of this. For example, the first book apparently ends up with Jose Carlos and Sheccid as a happy couple, but she later dies due to an illness. But then, in The Stinger, Ariadne reveals that nothing that happened was real. Jose Carlos wrote fake entries into his diary, because he was disappointed about Sheccid's real personality. The second book also ends up with one of his entries. He gets better in the third book, with Sheccid/Lorenna telling her the story form her point of view and Jose Carlos promising to write a book of it.

Sheccid/ Lorenna Deghemteri

A New Transfer Student who quickly becomes popular for her beautiful looks. Needless to say, Jose Carlos also falls for her, because her descriptions fits with the princess of a fairytale he read years ago.

  • The Ace: Surprisingly good at school grades and sports.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Her attraction to Adolfo counts as this.
  • Brainy Brunette
  • Broken Bird
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She states to have a Big, Screwed-Up Family. Turns out that the one who did it was a rebellious and drug-addict cousin called Justine. Thanks to her having a Wild Teen Party in their house, Lorenna's mother died because of a heart attack and her father and even Joaquin distanced from her and became involved with treacherous women.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After all the hell she went through. Her father remarries and is happy about starting a new life. Joaquin returns to the household and reforms his bad habits. She and Jose Carlos make amends after she tells him that he was her first love. And she's Happily Married to William and has a stable family. The girl really earned it.
  • Huge Schoolgirl: Not all that tall, but Jose Carlos seems to point it out constantly. It is to be noted, that Jose Carlos is very, very short.
  • Kick the Dog: Frequently to poor Jose Carlos. A particular example is when he boughts a box of chocolates to her together with a romantic note. She throws them into her schoolbag and doesn't even thank him. It was actually due to family stress.
  • Icy Blue Eyes: Doubles into What Beautiful Eyes! to Jose Carlos.
  • New Transfer Student: Her family frequently moves away.
  • Petite Pride: According to Justine, they are not so identical cousins after all, since she has Big-Breast Pride while Lorenna has a flat chest. Not that it bothers her.
  • School Idol: She quickly becomes this in her school, due to being The Ace.
  • Truly Single Parent: In the second book, she has a little daughter and the father is nowhere to be seen. In the third book it's explained that the father is a classmate named William. By the end of the series, they're Happily Married.

After saving Jose Carlos from a porn producer that was about to abduct him together with Mario, due to misunderstandings she believes he is involved with said producer. • Berserk Button: Mentioning his mother causes him to become a mess.
  • Break the Haughty: He starts out thinking that living with his mother sucks and gets the chance to live a life full of drugs, sex and porn films. In the end of the first book he fully embraces this. But after the second book, he starts regretting his decision, and the only one who helps him is his Only Friend.
  • But Now I Must Go: After returning Jose Carlos's documents from his Bad Boss, he escapes to another town.
  • Cigarette of Anxiety: In a particular nightmarish scene, Jose Carlos goes to visit him after he seemingly returns to his mother's house (when Mario was actually just looking for cash). • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He is nasty, boisterous and loves calling all sorts of names to Jose Carlos (like shortie or asshole), but he genuinely cares about him.
  • Living Lie Detector: Towards Jose Carlos. He is able to read him like a book, which allows Mario to recognize any attempts at subterfuge on his part. The only time he doesn't complain is when Jose Carlos visits him at the hospital as he's dying of AIDS, realizing that this time he is being genuine.
  • Looks Like Cesare: In the second book. After five years full of drugs and sex, he has become thinner, pale and his hair is longer.

  • Redemption Equals Death: After realizing he's dying of AIDS, he returns Jose Carlos's documents that his drug dealer previously stole. He then moves to another city to escape the debt collectors, but he's implied to succumb to the AIDS eventually.
  • Tsundere: A male example towards Jose Carlos. Mario loves berating and insulting him, but behind his back he does consider him his best friend. Hell, in the third book after meeting Lorenna, he tells her that Jose Carlos is his Only Friend without hesitation.
