Playable Characters

    Campaign Player

Campaign Player

The main protagonist of the base game.

  • Ambiguous Gender: There are no obvious indicators as to what their gender is.
  • Featureless Protagonist: Surprisingly, averted. During the credits sequence, the player is seen from behind wearing a black hoodie and jeans, and datamining the model reveals they have ice blue eyes. It is unclear what their gender is, even with this model.
  • Heroic Mime: Perhaps heroic is pushing it, but they never reply to any e-mails sent to them, doing the job wordlessly. They do not even make grunts of pain when shot or blown up. Word of God states this was to let the player be something of a self-insert.
  • Karma Houdini: Playing the side of whoever pays them has managed to work out really well for them. Between Lee and Gordon's feud, Anton and Gillian wanting to screw over Gordon, and Parisa wanting evidence to lock away Lee, the only time the player is caught in any meaningful fashion is after the game's first mission. Even after getting a bomb-on-wheels directed at their mom's house for the slights they caused Mr. Amanatides, they manage to prevent it from detonating and get off scot-free. They also never get caught for the millions of dollars in property damage they cause everyone who has the misfortune of getting in their clients' way, though it helps that the only clients they don't actively make a mess for are Parisa and the insurance company.
  • Kleptomaniac Hero: While up to the player's choice, it is highly encouraged to play like this. If it's not nailed down, and has at least some monetary value, chances are you can steal it. Choosing to not do this can border on a Self-Imposed Challenge due to how helpful fully-upgraded tools are.
  • A Lighter Shade of Grey: While they themselves are no saint, they tend to be a lot nicer than the people that are paying them to screw others over.
  • No Name Given: The player is never named. Given that, unlike most contractors in this game, Tracy isn't given a last name either, any part of the player's name is unknown.
  • Only in It for the Money: One of the few character traits they are shown to have. Their family's demolition service has fallen on hard times, and they take a seedy job from Gordon Woo without looking too closely at the fine print of what they're doing. Once the consequences come to bite them in the rear, they continue to do exactly what got them into this situation in the first place, this time for regular (and presumably) big payouts.
  • Removing the Rival: What they are paid to do more often than not.
    Freya Woo

Freya Woo

Gordon Woo's daughter and the protagonist of the Art Vandals expansion

  • Action Girl: Is capable of just as much destruction as the main campaign protagonist, and gets away scot-free as well.
  • Another Side, Another Story: Freya was mostly irrelevant during the main campaign due to being a scrapped contractor alongside Enid, being relegated to two or three item inspect quotes. In Art Vandals, however, she takes center stage.
  • Discard and Draw: Freya loses the explosives and most weapons from the main campaign, including the fan-favorite shotgun, but in return, she gains the Jackhammer, a Boring, but Practical option. It deals less damage than the Sledgehammer in the same range, but it has infinite uses, and can break through stone and metal, the latter of which making it a must-have.
  • Featureless Protagonist: No part of her body is ever seen.
  • Mess of Woe: Possibly. Freya's bedroom, during the main campaign, is incredibly messy. As shown in Art Vandals, her relationship with her soon-to-be-stepmother, Enid, amounts to "problem-solver" and little else, with Enid's name in her contacts having the word "Mom" in quotations. Her father at least seems to be looking out for her a little bit (such as when he tells her she should go back to the museum to steal the cameras that saw her), but even he appears to be under Enid's thumb.
  • Removing the Rival: As with the main campaign protagonist, this is what Freya's job is. In this case, it is to screw over Enid's rival, Kerstin.
  • Synchronous Episodes: Art Vandals takes place during the first part of the main campaign, as Gordon has not gone broke yet, and there is no snow. Specifically, it takes place around the time of the mission Covert Chaos, as Gordon mentions there was an incident at the mall halfway through.

Clients

    Gordon Woo
Manager of the Eventides Mall, racing afficiondo, and the player's first employer.
  • Egopolis: While not a city, making his own theme park called "Racing Woonderland" definitely is in the spirit of this.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: With Lee, causing a chain of missions where the two hire the Player to mess with each other.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Oh boy does hiring the Player to illegally destroy that heritage building come back to bite him hard, triggering a chain of break-ins and destruction caused by Parisa hiring the Player to investigate Lee, only for Lee to assume that it's Woo doing it and escalating their already existing rivalry. Eventually while Woo wins out over Lee, Lee still manages to get the last laugh from prison by getting the Player to destroy Woo's theme park, forcing Woo to file for bankruptcy.

    Parisa Terdiman
A criminal investigator for the police force who catches wind of the player's exploits, and recruits them for her own ends rather than arresting them.
  • Bad Boss: She does start your working relationship by blackmailing you and the missions she sends you on are often the most dangerous, pitting you against security robots with guns and Nigh-Invulnerability. But...
  • Benevolent Boss: She's also the employer who has the best rapport with you, is happy to let you enjoy some vacation time in the Muratori Islands on her dime, and is the only employer to display concern at all after missions that go dangerously sideways. Once the Player gets what she needs, she lets them go without any issues.
    • After the mission where you are caught raiding Lee Chemicals after the flood, she emails you and is genuinely worried about your safety.
  • Cowboy Cop: Her intentions are absolutely benevolent, but she's also willing to engage in blackmail and hiring a criminal to acquire evidence in rather illegal ways.

    Lawrence Lee Jr.
CEO of Lee Chemicals.
  • Sitcom Arch-Nemesis: With Woo. He ultimately gets thrown in jail, but he also gets the last laugh when he manages to hire the Player from prison to destroy Woo's theme park and ruin him financially in the process.

    Gillian Johnson
An insurance claims adjustor who manages Lee Jr.'s account.
  • Make an Example of Them: The whole reason they're hiring the Player is because they think Woo and Lee are committing insurance fraud and want to send a message. Neither Woo or Lee catch on, however, since they still think the vandalism is being caused by each other.

    Anton Wolfe
Owner of Wolfe Construction Company, and later The Wolfe Pawn Shop.

    Mr. Amantides
The CEO of Blue Tide.
  • Big Bad: Of the second half of the game. He's your employer for half the missions and your target for most of the rest, and starts the final level by launching a bomb truck at a town to level it and kill the player's mother.
  • Viler New Villain: Woo and Lee Jr. were more comedic than anything, what with hiring the same guy to repeatedly rob and vandalize each other. Mr. Amantides is much more malicious and corrupt, with active criminal ties 9besides the player), a company that sells an addictive and hazardous product, and the lengths he goes to against anyone who's crossed him.

Others

    Tracy
The mother of the main protagonist. She's also the owner of the Teardown demolitions company.
  • Granny Classic: She's not a grandmother, but she still has this general vibe. The player's main motivation is working to support both themselves and her.

    Security Robots
The various security robots encountered across the game starting in Act 2.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: Nothing in your arsenal can destroy them, and neither can any environmental explosions. Shots and explosions can stun them though, and dropping them in water instantly fries them.
