Main Heroines

    Kihara Kashin
The protagonist of the game. She can see youkai and spirits ever since she was young. She lost her mother in a car accident.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Her ability to see youkai got her ostracized as a weirdo by the other kids when she was younger.
  • Brought Down to Normal: By Ending 2, she has lost the powers that Houshin gave her due to him vanishing, and can no longer do things like see youkai or go back in time.
  • I See Dead People: She can see youkai, some of whom are deceased spirits of people.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal: Thanks to the white feather, she gains the ability to talk to animals.
  • Supporting Protagonist: While she is the player character who moves the story along, Yuki's life, backstory, and development are the actual focus of the story.

    Kiritani Yuki (spoilers)
A mute writer who has been unable to publish her manuscripts. She meets Kihara and informs her about the situation, the curse, and everything she needs to know. She can turn herself into a pigeon form that allows her to speak.
  • Becoming the Mask: She tries to present herself as an ally and friend to Kihara despite intending to use her as a disposable pawn to revive Houshin. However, she soon finds herself forming a genuine friendship with Kihara and feeling guilt for manipulating the very girl she selflessly used her powers to save, despite knowing it would invite consequences upon herself. By the end, she actively tries to convince Kihara not to go through with the revival ritual.
  • Deuteragonist: Yuki, as Kihara's helper, is the character most focused on aside from Kihara herself, and turns out to be even more important to the overall plot and setting.
  • God in Human Form: She is the human incarnation of Houshin.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Initially, she tried to trick Kashin into awakening Houshin, knowing this would turn her into his mindless vessel, by telling her it was the only way to release the curse keeping her trapped in Kuromori Town (when there actually is no such curse). However, she changes her mind after becoming genuine friends with Kashin.
  • Ms. Exposition: She tells Kihara about how her powers like Nensha work, and about the youkai world and the followers of Houshin.
  • Mystical White Hair: She has white hair to mark her mysteriousness, and is revealed to be a human incarnation of a local god.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: She dared to use her powers to save a little girl from death, so Houshin punished her for what he saw as an unnecessary use of his powers by taking away her voice.
  • The Speechless: She cannot speak in her human form due to the curse placed by Houshin, and needs to become a pigeon to be capable of speech.
  • That Man Is Dead: Kihara actually says this to her, telling her that her past as the human incarnation of Houshin, and all the emotional baggage that came with it, does not mean anything to her; she is Kiritani Yuki, a writer of unpublishable manuscripts and a dear friend. Yuki ultimately decides she feels the same way and lets go of her past in favor of a new future.

Allies

Shikinaki Village

    Tamasaki Shizu
A fox girl who is encountered in Chapter 1. She was always fascinated with the human world and made it a lifelong ambition to visit one day, but her community wouldn't let her. Instead, she is set to be married to an old guy with plenty of wives, but she doesn't particularly want to. So she begs Kihara to bust her out.
  • Runaway Bride: Chapter 1 centers around her trying to escape being married to an old guy she doesn't really like.

Forest Cat Café

    Kinoshita Sakurako
The owner of the Forest Cat Café in Chapter 2.
  • Actually, I Am Him: When first met, she pretends to be a worker at the café instead of the boss. According to Makoto, she does this with everyone.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: She first appears as the Black Cat in the beginning of the game, and shows up after Chapter 1 to direct Kihara to the Cat Cafe.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: She reveals at the end of the chapter that the reason she tricks people into drinking memory-erasing coffee is because they usually want to head to the dangerous abandoned theater with eternal acid rain and a vengeful spirit haunting it, and so she wants to stop them before they get themselves killed.

    Aizawa Makoto

Hagino Makoto

A waitress who works at the Forest Cat Café.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Her human life ended when she blocked Takashi in the train to stop him from killing anyone else, getting herself killed as a result.
  • Tragic Dream: All she ever wanted in life was to become a train captain like her family before her. She had to start out as a train attendant in order to get experience, but before she could reach her goal, she lost her life defending her passengers from cult member Takashi's rampage. Though she gets to travel around the Ghost Train after her death.

    Rin-chan and Mochi-chan
Sakurako and Makoto's cats.

Kuromori Town Theater (spoilers)

    Ando Megumi
A masked woman who works in the town theater. She is in charge of the ritual to pray to Houshin to expel the vengeful spirit haunting the theater.
  • The Atoner: She was Driven to Suicide by the guilt of gassing innocent people at the theater. Her dream self tries to get Kashin to go back in time so she can stop herself, and when that proves impossible because Nensha cannot erase death, she settles for helping Kashin calm down her Vengeful Ghost.
  • Career-Ending Injury: She used to be a popular actress, but after her lips were split by a Loony Fan, she faded from the spotlight despite her fans telling her they would love her no matter what happened to her face.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: She used to be a successful theater actress who moved to the big screen. But the economic crisis hit her as hard as anyone else, and when she got her lip split by a Loony Fan and hospitalized, it spelt the end of her career. This allowed Eisei to manipulate her into gassing the theater she worked at.
  • Enemy Without: Inverted. The Vengeful Ghost that haunts the theater is her true self, while the version of her Kashin interacts with is a dream projection.
  • Masking the Deformity: She is a Kuchisake-onna who wears a face mask to cover up her slit lip, which she got from a Loony Fan attacking her back when she was a human celebrity.
  • Vengeful Ghost: After being manipulated into killing innocent people at the theater and being Driven to Suicide, her spirit became the red, monstrous youkai haunting the theater that attacks everyone who comes near her.

    Terajima Eisei
The manager of the town theater.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: He presents himself as the kind manager of the theater and seems to be nothing but that, until he is revealed to be a member of Shinritengoku who manipulated Megumi into carrying out the theater gas attack and led the hit on former member Matsuyama.
  • Co-Dragons: He and Takashi carry out Sugihara's orders to launch gas attacks in the theater and subway, respectively.
  • Karma Houdini: The Stinger reveals that, after masterminding a Deadly Gas attack on his own theater on behalf of his cult, he apparently went into hiding and is still out there, writing books.
  • The Mole: He pretends to be a worshipper of Houshin like the other villagers who helps them carry out a ritual to pray to Houshin, but he is actually a member of Shinritengoku with orders to attack the theater they hold the ritual in.

Shinritengoku (Heavenly Kingdom of Truth)

    General
A murderous cult that serves as the main enemy faction. Founded by Sugihara Hirosumi, the cult was formed from people alienated from society because of the economic crisis. They perpetrated several poison gas attacks in subways, including the Eidan subway, and the Kuromori Town community theater, believing that doing so would earn them entrance to a utopia of eternal happiness.
  • Apocalypse Cult: They believe that corrupt society is decaying and will collapse, and so seek to destroy it so as to achieve a utopia of eternal happiness.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: They are basically Aum Shinrikyo in all but name, being an Apocalypse Cult with similar beliefs responsible for a subway Deadly Gas attack. Even their name, translated as Heavenly Kingdom of Truth, is very close to Aum Shinrikyo's translated English name, "Universal Supreme Truth/Teaching of Truth".

    Sugihara Hirosumi
The founder of Shinritengoku. He created a cult as a means of rebelling against what he saw as a corrupt society run by "greedy capitalists". Though unseen, his orders are responsible for the attacks that killed and injured many innocents.
  • Big Bad: He is the founder of Shinritengoku who, while never personally encountered, is responsible for ordering the Deadly Gas attacks on Kuromori Town that caused the town to become haunted by the spirits of the deceased, and Kihara must defeat some of his minions to be able to break the curse on the town.
  • Dark Messiah: He's the founder of Shinritengoku who promises to lead his followers to a heavenly utopia if they kill people for him.
  • The Ghost: He's never seen in person, but we do read letters from him to his followers and one of his writings.
  • Manipulative Bastard: We see in a letter he sent to Takashi how he convinced the divorcee to carry out an attack on a train, promising him he will be rewarded with a utopia.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: As his cult is based on Aum Shinrikyo, he is based on Shoko Asahara, a charismatic self-proclaimed savior who preaches of societal decay and the coming end times, and teaches his followers that he can grant them eternal happiness if they follow his orders.

    Matsuyama Masao
The station manager of Shikinaki Village who joined Shinritengoku. He is long dead and supposedly hanged himself.
  • Evil Old Folks: He was 62 years old when he died, and at that age was a member of a cult who helped organize a gas attack in his own station.
  • The Ghost: We never see him in person; he's only referred to.
  • He Knows Too Much: He was hanged by Eisei when he threatened to send a list containing names of Shinritengoku members to the police to get them off his back.

    Nishimura Seiko
One of the two members who carried out the attack on the Eidan subway. She is a girl who lost a lot in her life, such as her parents losing their jobs in the economic crisis, and was manipulated by Takashi into helping him with the attack.
  • Apologetic Attacker: She says "sorry" in a soft voice before opening her poison canister and unleashing the Deadly Gas on the train as she was instructed to do.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After carrying out her suicide gas attack on the train, she realizes Takashi was just using her as a disposable pawn and grabs his leg, trying to take him down with her.

    Yamada Takashi
One of the two members who carried out the attack on the Eidan subway. He is a divorcee who was ordered by Sugihara to attack Kuromori Town. His spirit haunts the Ghost Train.
  • Arc Villain: Of Chapter 2, as Kashin and Makoto need to escape him and thwart his attack on the train in order to get back to Kuromori Town.
  • Co-Dragons: He and Eisei carry out Sugihara's orders to launch gas attacks in the theater and subway, respectively.
  • Manipulative Bastard: A trait he picked up from Sugihara. He encourages the reluctant Seiko to go through with their plan to poison the train passengers by concocting stories to make each individual passenger on the train car to be an awful person who deserves death.
  • Villainous Breakdown: When Kashin and Makoto get in the way of his plans to kill everyone on the train, he starts screaming at them.

Gods

    Eiko
The original god of the Black Forest worshipped by the foxes.
  • Posthumous Character: By the time we first encounter him, he's little more than a skull thanks to Houshin stealing all his worshippers.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: From what little we see of him, he is a friendly god who does not belittle Shizu's desire to go see the human world, unlike her fellow youkai.

    Houshin (God of Abundance)
The new god worshipped by Kuromori Town.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: For using his powers without permission to save Kashin's life, he took Yuki's voice away.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He is deceased as of the game, but is the reason Kihara is trapped in Kuromori town as Yuki is manipulating her into reviving him, and if revived he will turn Kihara into a puppet.
  • Jerkass Gods: He was revered by the villagers as a benevolent deity, but was responsible for fellow deity Eiko's death by taking away his worshippers, and took away Yuki's voice because she used her powers to save a dying child without permission.
