Main Characters

     Makia O'Drielle
The heroine. She's the daughter of the infamous O'Drielle family, who are the descendants of the Scarlet Witch. In her past life she was Kazuha Oda, a regular Japanese high school student who was murdered by a mysterious assailant. After her childhood friend and knight, Thor, is taken to the royal capital, she resolves to see him again by enrolling into Lune Ruschia Magic School, the most prestigious magic school in the world.
  • The Ace: She is the scion of a very powerful (if dreaded) magical bloodline, got second place on her entrance exams, summons two Familiars simultaneously at her first try and later manages to recreate a spell used by the Scarlet Witch herself.
  • The Chosen Many: After her date with Thor, she notices that she is the fourth guardian, spotting their Distinguishing Mark. However, she was not the original. The original, Professor Batiste, never revealed his identity, and his position was transferred to her when he lost it by making a Deal with the Devil and dying when the Blue Jester used his puppet magic for a Grand Theft Me spell.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Anyone who tries to take Thor away from her will be met with her wrath.
  • Country Mouse: Being the daughter of a rather low-ranking provincial baron, she is unused to life in bigger cities. She almost gets run over by a carriage during her first visit to the capital, and is amazed by its various foods.
  • The Dreaded: Not she herself, but her family name. People tend to shiver any time Makia openly announces herself as an O'Drielle, a descendent of the Scarlet Witch. And she's not just a descendant, but her heir and probable reincarnation, leading many to think of her as a suspicious person, if not an outright villain due to the Scarlet Witch's infamy.
  • Familiar: She summons two hamsters during class, which turn out to be familiars of the Scarlet Witch, the named spirits Poporoactus and Dontanattez.
  • Fiery Redhead: Makia has red hair and is outspoken and outgoing. Her magical skill set also includes fire-powers.
  • Green Thumb: She can summon brambles and throny vines to restrain and bind people.
  • It Was a Gift: She still wears the red earrings that Thor bought her for her fourteenth birthday.
  • I Will Find You: Her main motivation in the early part is to be reunited with Thor after he is chosen as one of the Guardians.
  • Lonely Rich Kid: Makia before she met Thor.
  • Love Epiphany: She realizes her feelings for Thor on her fourteenth birthday, right before losing him to the prophecy.
  • Losing a Shoe in the Struggle: She loses her shoe during the fight against the terrorists in the royal palace.
  • Magic Hair: During her fight at the palace, she cuts off her hair and transforms it into restraining bindings. It is later revealed to be a spell originally developed by the Scarlet Witch.
  • Ojou: She's the daughter of a noble. Her family is of rather low standing, however.
  • Playing with Fire: As a "blessed child of fire", she has the ability to melt or incinerate everything she touches. She uses this to melt Thor's chains upon their first meeting.
  • Reincarnation: In addition to being the reincarnation of a Japanese girl, she is almost certainly the reincarnation of the Scarlet Witch.
  • Reincarnate in Another World: On the night of her tenth birthday, she dreams about her former life as Kazuha Oda. Only during the meteor shower on her fourteenth birthday does she truly realize that these are her Past-Life Memories.
  • Reincarnation Romance: What she eventually hopes to achieve with Thor.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: During the ball, she gets a lot of compliments.
Nero: I'm struck by the realization that you're a girl...
  • Super Drowning Skills: As a blessed child of fire, she doesn't take well to water, because water spirits hate those blessed by fire and try to drown them.
  • Sweet Tooth: She has a great love for cakes and other pastries, even going so far as to choose a lemon-shortcake as her price during her bet with Garnet Team 1. In comparison, Beatrice demands Nero as a price.
  • Uptown Girl: Originally to Thor. Eventually it is inverted, as his status as a Guardian had him elevated into higher-ranking nobility.

     Thor Bigreitz
Makia's former knight, now one of the Guardians of the Savior. He bears a striking resemblance to Saitou Tooru, a classmate of Kazuha whom she was in love with and who died alongside her in the knife-attack. Thor was a boy from the Frezier Empire who was sold into slavery by his parents, but was saved from it by Makia and her father after they witnessed his incredible magic. He is later chosen as one of the Savior's Guardians and taken to the royal palace to be trained as a knight.
  • The Ace: He has immense magical talent, is very skilled at swordplay and admired or envied by basically all around him. His only flaw seems to be that he Sucks at Dancing.
  • Ambiguous Situation:
    • It is not really clear if he actually is a reincarnation of Tooru or simply an in-universe Expy. While bearing a striking resemblance in looks and personality to the latter, he seems to have no memories of his past life, not even upon eating onigiri, which used to be "his" Trademark Favorite Food.
    • His strong magical talent, affinity for gravity magic and resemblance to Lapis also imply a link to the Black Demon King.
  • Barefoot Captives: During his introduction as a slave.
  • Dragon Rider: Like many of the royal knights, he rides a dragon. His one is also his Familiar, an ice dragon named Griminde.
  • Foil: To Prince Gilbert. While Gilbert broke off his own engagement to Beatrice out of total devotion to the Savior, Thor seems unable to forget his feelings for Makia. Gilbert is also a royal Muggle Born of Mages, whereas Thor is a former slave with immense magical talent.
  • Happily Adopted: Narrowly Averted. He was on the verge of being adopted into House O'Drielle for his magical talent with the addition of a Perfectly Arranged Marriage to Maikia. Then, however, he manifested his mark as a guardian, and is instead adopted by Lord Bigreitz.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: He carries a sword which he utilizes as part of his Magic Knight-fighting-style.
  • Lady and Knight: He has this dynamic with Makia, still calling her "Mylady" even after formally ceasing to be her knight. While they started out as more bickering teens, he acts distinctly more chivalrous after the timeskip. The Savior wishes for such a dynamic with him in vain.
  • Made a Slave: Born into a dirt-poor family living in the slums, his parents sold him into slavery. Many people around him constantly remind him of his past.
  • Magic Knight: His skillset includes both swordplay and magic.
  • Mind over Matter: His magical speciality is telekinesis.
  • Servile Snarker: He used to have this dynamic with Makia when he still was her knight. After the timeskip, he adopts a distinctly more chivalric manner towards her, albeit sometimes still teasing.
  • Sucks at Dancing: The only thing he struggled at in his youth. He greatly improved during the timeskip.
  • Rags to Riches: Went from being a slave from the Frezier Empire slums to being taken in by a provincial noble family, and then being adopted into a wealthier ducal family.
  • Reincarnation: He is most likely the reincarnation of Tooru, as well as the Black Demon King. However, he has no access to any Past-Life Memories.
  • Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He is a rather tall man with dark hair and a real heartthrob, albeit he has only eyes for Makia.
  • The Tease: His main method of flirting with Makia, besides his genuinely knightly behavior. For example, he gives her a half-naked Wall Pin of Love.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: When Makia and the Savior walk in on the knights' training. He promptly goes on to give Makia a teasing Wall Pin of Love.

The Savior and other Guardians

The people chosen by Maydare to save it from calamity.

    The Savior/Tanaka Airi

The legendary Savior from another world, destined to defeat rogue mages alongside her four guardians. She takes a particular interest in Thor. She is later revealed to be Tanaka Airi, Kazuha's best friend, who survived the knife attack, but was drawn into the world of the book she was writing by the attacker.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She feigns friendship with Makia, even as she sneakily tries to turn Makia into the villain she is inside of her story.
  • The Chosen One: She is chosen to be the savior, a new iteration of a legendary hero.
  • Designated Hero: In-universe. She is treated as The Chosen One by everyone around her, but acts more like a spoiled brat who doesn't take anything seriously until it deviates from story.
  • Entitled to Have You: A female example. She views Thor as this, due to him being destined to be her guardian. He seems to disagree.
  • Familiar: Her's is a legendary dragon that used to belong to the White Sage, the old hero's mentor.
  • I Just Want to Be You: She was envious of Kazuha, causing her to copy many of the things she did.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Played With. While she was accepting of Tooru's love for Kazuha, she ironically hopes for a one-sided Reincarnation Romance with Thor, while not realizing that she is once again standing between him and Kazuha.
  • In the Hood: How she first appears in the story as the Savior.
  • Protagonist-Centered Morality: She is rather open about her role as "the main character" of the world and basically views everything she does as righteous and good.
  • Survivor Guilt: She fell into deep depression after losing both her friend and her crush in a knife-attack she herself survived.
  • Thinks Like a Romance Novel: Given that she was transported into her own romance-novel, she acts and thinks like she is in one, all the while operating on Protagonist-Centered Morality. After Makia gets tired of Airi's efforts to turn her into the villain of Airi's story, she confesses to being Kazuha's reincarnation. Being forced to accept that she is not actually enjoying life in her story causes Airi to have a mental breakdown.
  • Trapped in Another World: Instead of being reincarnated like Kazuha, she instead was transported to Maydere.
  • With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Being blessed by all spirits has given her power, but also made her already strained psyche even more fragile.

     Lionel Fabray
The vice-captain of the Royal knights, who was chosen as a Guardian.
  • The Cavalry Arrives Late: He first appears right after Garnet Team 9 saves the Savior, profoundly apologising for being late.
  • Extreme Doormat: He is slapped by the Savior merely two panels after his introduction, simply for not being Thor.
  • Pegasus: He rides one in his introduction. It seems to be his Familiar.

     Gilbert Duke Roy Ruschia
The third Prince of the Kingdom, and one of the chosen Guardians.
  • Chick Magnet: His first appearance has a group of young noblewomen swooning over him.
  • Foil: To Thor. While Gilbert broke off his own engagement to Beatrice out of total devotion to the Savior, Thor seems unable to forget his feelings for Makia. Gilbert is also a royal Muggle Born of Mages, whereas Thor is a former slave with immense magical talent.
  • Jerkass: Despite appearing as a Prince Charming at first, he is quickly shown to be elitist, aggressive and mindlessly devoted to the Savior.
  • Muggle Born of Mages: An angry Frey reveals that Gilbert, despite being a Price of The Magocracy Ruschia, can't use magic.

     Lapis Twilight
An international student from the Frezier Empire who is Makia's roommate. She is later revealed to be a descendant of the Black Demon King, another legendary mage.
  • Artificial Limbs: She has a magical prosthetic arm and leg. She normally uses Glamour to hide them. She implies to have lost them as a consequence of her lineage.
  • Commonality Connection: Similar to Makia, is also rather open about being a descendent of a Great Magician, in her case the Black Demon King, as she openly bears the name "Twilight".
  • Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: Downplayed. Lapis seems to fit the trope at first, but she is generally friendly, if a bit shy at first, and she definitely has her secrets.
  • Familiar: Hers is a black cat with the darkness attribute named Noah, who she actually summoned even before attending the academy for her "line of work".
  • Jerkass to One: Lapis is polite to everyone except Frey.

A commoner student who's at the top of Makia's grade. Roommates with Frey.
  • City Mouse: Makia notes that he to feel at home in larger cities like the royal capital.
  • Familiar: His is a falcon-like bird named Fugue.
  • Magical Eye: Played With. He actually wears cutting-edge magical contact-lenses as a way to hide his magenta eyes, a source of discrimination.
  • Penny Among Diamonds: In a team consisting of the daughter of a noble family, a descendant of The Black Demon King, so presumably nobility and a Prince of the Kingdom, he is the sole commoner among them.
  • The Stoic: He's pretty quiet and rarely shows emotions.
  • Sucks at Dancing: While he dresses up rather good for the ball, looking almost princely, he turns out to be a rather bad dancer.

     Frey Levi
Nero's roommate. A skirt-chaser who was held back a year. He is later revealed to be the kingdom's fifth prince.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He has tremendous magical potential as a "blessed child of the earth" and a scion of the royal bloodline, but rather opts to daydream or chase after women.
  • The Casanova: So much so that two girls are fighting over him during his introduction.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: His hair and eyes are the same shade of green.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: Makia and Nero both notice his dancing skills and princely looks during the ball. Shortly after that Prince Gilbert reveals that Frey is his disgraced younger brother.
  • Likes Older Women: To the degree that he at first refuses to talk to Makia, as she is younger than him. Only when Lapis points out to him that he will be older than all the other students if he continues to fail his classes, he agrees to join her group.
  • Really Royalty Reveal: At the Ball in honor of the Savior, he is revealed to be the Kingdom's youngest prince, who was chased out of the palace after a scandal caused by his mother.
  • Ship Tease: Besides all of his skirt-chasing, he seems to have a slight crush on Makia's cousin Nagie.
  • Wall Crawl: As a "blessed child of the Earth", he has the ability to walk up stoney surfaces, including most walls or ceilings.

Other Students

     Beatrice Asta
The granddaughter of the head of the royal court of magicians', Team Leader of Garnet Team 1 and the class' resident Alpha Bitch.
  • Alpha Bitch: Out of all the character's in this otome-inspired story, she acts the most like a typical villainess: She is elitist, haughty, from a powerful family and is a prince's ex-fiancĂ©e.
  • Beneath the Mask: Is it implied that her Alpha Bitch attitude is her way of coping with her rejection by Prince Gilbert.
  • Disposable FiancĂ©: She is later revealed to have been dumped by Prince Gilbert, after the latter was chosen as a guardian.
  • Familiar: She summons a Unicorn, with is also depicted on her house's crest.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: She has shades of this, such as treating Makia more like a Worthy Opponent after her rescue of the Savior. She is also portrayed in a more sympathetic light after it is revealed that she was engaged to Prince Gilbert, who broke off the the engagement after being chosen as a Guardian.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh: She often breaks out into the typical "OHOHOH".
  • Woman Scorned: She was engaged to Prince Gilbert, whom she really loved, but he broke off the engagement after being selected as a Guardian.

     Nagie Medite
The eldest daughter of the head of House Medite and Makia's elder cousin. She is also the leader of the girl's dormitory.
  • Cool Big Sis: So mutch so that Makia calls her "Big Sis Nagi". She quickly warms up to Lapis as well.

School Faculty

     Urbanus Medite

The school's potions-instructor and Makia's maternal uncle.

     Yuri Ulysses Le Ruschia
The school's head instructor of magical spirits, as well as the kingdom's second prince. A former Child Prodigy turned Cool Teacher.
  • Ambiguous Situation: He clearly is somehow connected to the White Sage: He dresses in white, summons spirits used famously by him and knows certain thing about the other Great Magicians.
  • The Archmage: He is the highest ranking mage to appear so far. He also is implied to have some form of connection to the White Sage.
  • Big Brother Instinct: He defends his younger brother Frey from Gilbert's hostilities during the royal ball.
  • Child Prodigy: He summoned three spirits at once at the age of five. As a comparison, the fact that Makia summons two spirits at once is treated as remarkable.

  • Gentleman and a Scholar: He is a highly talented wizard as well as a well-mannered prince.
  • Hot Teacher: He has a attractive Bishonen-look. Makia remarks on his beauty upon seeing him for the first time.

  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: He is one of the most powerful spirits in existence. He also gets stuck in a mirror right as he appears.

Historical Figures

    The Hero
A hero summoned by the White Sage, he is renowned for putting an end to the Three Great Magicians for their crimes.
  • Deceptive Disciple: He murdered the White Sage and stole his power.
  • The Poorly Chosen One: The White Sage summoned him to put an end to the chaos the Scarlet Witch and Black Demon King were causing. His methods were so cruel that the White Sage regretted his choice and attempted to stop him, only to himself be betrayed and killed by him.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: He was a psychopath with distinctive red eyes.
  • Sociopathic Hero: He did the job he was summoned for, but his methods were manipulative, cruel, and showed a lack of any humanity. He was also the one who murdered Makia and Thor's Japanese incarnations in cold blood for his own ends.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: The backstory suggests that he was no less evil than the Three Great Magicians he defeated, and even less humane, but the history books remember him fondly. The Scarlet Witch is even the most hated of the Three Great Magicians because she was the one who managed to kill him at the cost of her own life.

The Three Great Magicians

Three almost legendary figures who ushered in an era magic 500 years before the story. They struggled for power and thus endangered countless lives, before being felled by the Hero of Fraxinus.

    General
  • Ambiguously Evil: While they are portrayed as legendary villains in official records, the Scarlet Witch's diary paints her and the Black Demon King in a way more favorable light.
  • Lonely at the Top: Because they were so talented and powerful, all of them had trouble getting along with other people and were isolated to various degrees.
  • We Used to Be Friends: At one point, they were close enough to work together and build a magic fortress that would come to be a magic academy. The Hero somehow tore them apart.

    The Scarlet Witch
A legendary witch who lived in the Salt Tree Forest and was the progenitor of House O'Drielle. Being the last of the Great Magicians to fall to the Hero, she pulled a Taking You with Me on him.
  • Lady in Red: She is always shown in red, as per her name.
  • Magic Hair: Many of her spells included manipulation of her hair.
  • Spirit Advisor: Makia is her descendant, heir, and probable reincarnation. When Makia ends up in a tight spot, the Scarlet Witch's personality guides her.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: A flashback shows that she originally used her magic to help those around her, and only turned evil after continuously facing fear and rejection by the very same people.
  • Yandere: The darker influences she has on Makia take this form, greatly exaggerating her Clingy Jealous Girl-tendencies.

    The Black Demon King
A great mage who enslaved the beasts of the snow kingdom and was the second to be defeated by the hero. He is also Lapis' ancestor.
  • Dark Is Evil: He wore all black, ruled a frozen wasteland and took part in a brutal power-struggle.
  • Improperly Paranoid: He constantly kept rejecting the Scarlet Witch's gifts under the wrong assumption that they might be poisoned.
  • Tin Tyrant: He is always depicted in black armor.

     The White Sage
A legendary summoner who bound Maydere's Spirits to his will. He was the master of the Hero of Fraxinus, and the first to fall to his pupil.
  • Evil Mentor: What he was to the Hero of Fraxinus, at least according to the official history.
  • Light Is Not Good: Despite his white color-scheme and merlin-esque influences, he is treated as villainous as the other two Great Magicians.
