Introduced in Song in the Silence

Lanen "Maransdatter" Kaelar

A young woman who longs to explore the world, and who has always dreamed of the True Dragons.
  • Action Girl: While she tends to get captured a lot, thanks to being heavily outnumbered or facing demons, she does know how to fight. When Berys holds her captive in the third book, she nearly kills Marik even though she's a prisoner.
  • Determinator: No matter how many people try to tell her that the True Dragons don't exist, that going to the isle of the lan trees will only result in her death, she will still go there. This applies to several other things she does as well.
  • Interspecies Romance/Mayfly–December Romance: With Akhor.
  • In the Blood: Feels a longing to travel, like her own mother did.
  • Mindlink Mates: With Akhor/Varien.
  • Strong Family Resemblance: Many characters comment that she looks just like her mother.
  • Telepathy: Is one of the few humans able to use Truespeech.

Jameth of Arinoc (Jaime)

The steward of Hadron's farm, and the person Lanen is closest to as she grows up.

Marik of Gundar

A former lover of Lanen's mother, Maran, and potentially Lanen's father. He actually is. Deals with demons, and promised his firstborn child to them in order to create an item called the Farseer.
  • Deal with the Devil: Well, with demons. In order for them to create a device that will show him anything or anyone he desires, he promises his firstborn child.
  • Glamour: Uses a powerful one. Lanen is only able to resist it because it was made specifically for Marik, and she's of his blood.
  • Hearing Voices: As a result of Akhor and Shikrar breaking his mind. He realizes quickly that it's Truespeech, and that he's overhearing the Kantri's conversations.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: Does this to Berys in the third book - he acts as if he believes Berys is joking, when he knows full well that Berys does intend him harm. Before Berys is aware that Marik knows what is going on, he takes his chance to escape through a secret passage.
  • Oh, Crap!: When he sees a demon coming after him in book three:
    Marik: Oh, shit.
  • Sharing a Body: The Demonlord absorbs his soul and they share the Black Dragon's body.

Khordeshkhistriakhor (Akhor)

A silver dragon - the king of his people.
  • Humanity Ensues: Becomes human at the end of Song in the Silence.
  • Interspecies Romance/Mayfly–December Romance: With Lanen.
  • Meaningful Name: "Desh" means "strange" in the dragon tongue; it partly refers to his silver armor, as none of his kind have been that color before. Akor/Akhor also means "lord" or "king".
  • Mindlink Mates: With Lanen. They even have a very realistic vision of them flying the Flight of the Devoted, something that normally two Kantri would do, and this is when they truly become a couple.

Hadretikantishikrar (Shikrar)

A somewhat elderly male dragon, and Akhor's best friend. Keeper of Souls; he protects the soulgems of the Lesser Kindred and those who have died.

Iderrikanterrisai (Idai)

A female dragon and one of the oldest of the Kantri, respected for her wisdom. She's always had feelings for Akhor.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Akhor was always well aware how Idai felt about him, but he never felt the same about her.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Obsesses over Akhor despite the fact that she knows he doesn't want to be mates, even going so far as to tell him her true name before they really know each other. She also attempts to kill Lanen once.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: She attempts to kill Lanen the first time they meet, and remains cold to her by the end of the book. By the third book she views her as a friend and jokes around with her.
  • Jail Bait Wait: She had to wait till Akhor came of age in order to ask him if he wanted to be her mate.
  • Meaningful Name: Part of her name means "She Who Knows Without Knowing", which reflects her wisdom.

Mirazheshakramene (Mirazhe)

A female dragon; mate of Shikrar's son Kédra.

Maikel

A healer in Marik's employ.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Does his best to try and stop the demon Berys put inside him, even though he knows it will result in his death.
  • The Medic: He's a healer.
  • Unwitting Pawn: To Berys in The Lesser Kindred. Berys put a demon inside him in order to make him follow Lanen and unknowingly set a magic path to her.

Berys/Malior

A powerful mage and demon master.
  • And Show It to You: Likes to do this to those he's sacrificing to demons. Even if said person is his apprentice that he mistakenly attacked.
  • The Archmage: His position at the College of Mages in Verfaren.
  • Evil Sorcerer: While magic isn't looked badly upon, dealing with demons definitely is.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Good enough that very few people ever suspected his true nature.

Varien, the Changed One

A man with silver hair and green eyes, who is more than what he appears to be... He's actually Akhor, transformed to human form.
  • Meaningful Name: His full true name means "He who is Changed from the Lord of the Kantri to a Man, Beloved of Lanen"
  • Mindlink Mates: With Lanen. They use Truespeech just as much as regular speech.
  • Overly Long Name: Varien Kantriakor rash-Gedri, Kadreshi naLanen. He even comments that yes, it is overlong, but that he'll probably need the safety of a long name.
  • Really 700 Years Old: On account of originally being a dragon. Some characters call him "son" or otherwise refer to him as young, and he has to remind them that he's actually much older.
  • Super-Toughness/Super-Strength: Because he used to be a dragon, he retains the strength of a dragon in his muscles and bones.
  • Voluntary Shapeshifting: At the end of Redeeming The Lost he finds that he is able to switch between his dragon and human forms at will.

    Introduced in The Lesser Kindred

Salera

A female Lesser Kindred, raised by Will.

Willem of Rowanbeck (Will)

A man who raised Salera after her mother died.
  • All Love Is Unrequited: Loves Aral but she doesn't feel the same.
  • Badass Bookworm: He was in the position of librarian at the mages' college when all this started. While he doesn't have any powers, he doesn't hesistate to be in the thick of things.
  • Parental Substitute: To Salera, who actually comes to think of him as her father.

Aral of Berún

A young woman at the mages' college; a healer who experiments with Vilkas to put their power to other uses.

Vilkas ta-Geryn

A young man at the mages' college; a healer who experiments with Aral to put their power to other uses.

Nikis

A female dragon who happens to be in the Weh sleep during the events of the story.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: "Nikis the Weary".
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: The Kantri have decided that they will never let her forget that she was the only one to sleep through the journey back to Kolmar.
  • Sleepyhead: She can't help it; the Weh sleep is a necessary thing when they are regrowing their armor.

Khemirnakunakhor (Keakhor)

A dragon who lived at the time of the Demonlord's defeat.
  • Only Sane Man: When the rest of his kin kept attacking the Demonlord's dead body, he shouted, "He's dead, we can't kill him any more! For pity's sake look to the wounded."

The Demonlord

Long ago, a powerful mage allied himself with Rakshasa, giving his name to them and becoming nearly unstoppable. When the Kantri attacked him, he changed many of them into insentient, beast-like creatures before sheer numbers finally helped them take him down.
  • Beat Still, My Heart: Performed the Spell of the Distant Heart - a spell that removes his still living heart, so that in the event his body dies, he will live on, very similar to a demon.
  • Evil Sorcerer
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: He gave his very name to the demons, giving them power over him, but also making him invincible to others who cannot know his name. He is, therefore, only known as "The Demonlord".
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Stuck in the demon realm and unable to do anything in the real world until a powerful enough demon master summons him, gives powerful enough payment (the very rare lan fruit), and binds him to them.

    Introduced in Redeeming the Lost

Maran Vena of Beskin

Lanen's mother, who left her many years ago.
