    Seth

Seth

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/superbad_jonah_hill_5.jpg
"I am truly jealous you got to suck on those tits when you were a baby."
Portrayed by: Jonah Hill
Voiced by: Eduardo Garza (Mexican Spanish dub)

  • All Men Are Perverts: As seen below, all he wants to do is have sex with girls, no matter which method.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Despite his obsession with the opposite sex, Seth's bromance with Evans is often framed in an overtly romantic light. His past obsession with drawing dicks also doesn't help his case.
  • Anti-Role Model: It's clear that viewers shouldn't imitate his misogynistic and unpleasant behavior.
  • The Chew Toy: He goes through a lot of humiliations throughout the film, such as getting spat on, hit by a car, covered in menstrual blood, etc.
  • Creepy Child: He had shades of this as a kid with his dick drawing obsession. He mentioned he had to go to an exorcist because of this.
  • Everyone Has Standards: He's visibly disturbed over Mark beating up the party patron.
  • Fat Bastard: He's fat and openly rude to people, especially Fogell.
  • Hormone-Addled Teenager: Sex is the only thing on his mind.
  • Irrational Hatred: Of Becca. Turns out it's due to "ratting him out" on his dick drawings, but that's his own fault in the first place.
  • It's All About Me: He shows more concern towards getting laid than Fogell getting in trouble. Evan calls him out on this:
Evan: How fucking selfish are you? You had no problem letting Fogell take the fall back there, you obviously don't want me going to a good school...
    Seth: Fuck, man!
Evan: So what the fuck do you want from me? I'm not gonna let you slow me down anymore, Seth!
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He was rude about it, but he wasn't wrong to tell Fogell that McLovin is an unconvincing name and instantly tips off that his ID is fake. While Fogell gets a pass on the name at the liquor store due to pure luck, Slater and Michaels instantly see through the ruse and only go along with it for their own reasons.
  • Large Ham: He's pretty loud and over-the-top, particularly when interacting with Fogell.
  • Made of Iron: Even after getting hit two cars and a baseball bat, he's still shown none worse for the wear.
  • Never My Fault: He blames Becca for him getting "cured" of his dick drawings, but she only stumbled upon it because he left it in plain sight where a student knocked it over.
  • Pet the Dog: He compliments Fogell on getting the booze and fends off a violent creep on Fogell's behalf.
  • Politically Incorrect Hero: Seth has a typically misogynistic, insensitive attitude you'd expect from a mid-noughties teenager and has no problem with calling people fags, as well as Fogell a “retard” at one point in the unrated version.
  • Rude Hero, Nice Sidekick: The Rude Hero to Evan's Nice Sidekick, as he is a foul-mouthed, misogynistic pervert in contrast to Evan's honest and considerate nature.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: He's a very foul-mouthed individual.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Apparently, he really liked phallic shaped foods such as hot dogs and popsicles, which he was forbidden to eat due to his dick drawing obsession.
Seth: You know how many foods are shaped like dicks? The best kinds.
  • Troubling Unchildlike Behaviour: Seth admits with some embarrassment that he used to have a compulsive obsession with drawing highly detailed erect penises when he was a little kid.
  • Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist: He tries to get a girl drunk to make out with her (which does backfire) and is generally self-centered. He's still hilarious, though.

    Evan

Evan

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/superbad_michael_cera.jpg
"You just sound like an idiot. You're not gonna be able to sleep with her, man."
Portrayed by: Michael Cera
Voiced by: Irwin Daayán (Mexican Spanish dub)

  • Above the Influence: When Becca lays in her bed drunk, he simply decides to leave her there.
  • Deadpan Snarker: He's prone to snarking at Seth's nonsense and Fogell's fake identity.
  • Dogged Nice Guy: He tries his best to make an impression in front of Becca.
  • Morality Pet: He is the only one Seth shows his good side with. Best shown when Seth tries to carry Evan back home while the latter is intoxicated.
  • Nice Guy: He's much more friendly than Seth and openly objects into manipulating girls into loving him.
  • Not So Above It All: Even he snarks at Fogell's nickname and vest.
  • Only Sane Man: In contrast to the reckless Seth and awkward Fogell, he remains reasonable and rational.
  • Rude Hero, Nice Sidekick: The Nice Sidekick to Seth's Rude Hero, as he is considerate and honest towards others in contrast to Seth being the foul-mouthed, misogynistic pervert he is.

    Fogell/"McLovin"

Fogell/"McLovin"

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mclovin_1_4.jpeg
"I am McLovin!"
Voiced by: Moisés Iván Mora (Mexican Spanish dub)

  • Awesome Mc Cool Name: His alias "McLovin" is impossible to take seriously at first (as pointed out numerous times by other characters, though Officer Slater calls it a cool name), but it turns out to be a legitimately cool nom de guerre.
  • Butt-Monkey: He's set up as an obvious one at first, until the several levels of badass he takes over the course of the film quickly change that.
  • Character Development: He was introduced as a stammering dork afraid of girls and adults. After hanging with Slater and Michaels and experiencing thrill after thrill he's still a dork, but a dork with far more confidence.
  • Ditzy Genius: He's smart enough to get into Dartmouth while also being dumb enough to think McLovin is a good name for his fake ID. It's worth noting he also seriously considered Muhammad.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: While Seth and Evan tried relying on alcohol to get laid and failed miserably, Fogell just walks up to the girl he's crushing on and charms her into bed with her full consent. He was cockblocked as soon as the sex began, but this being Slater and Michaels they help him stage a badboy reputation that ensures he'll be getting another chance at sex sooner or later.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: Seth genuinely dislikes him and seems to only hang out with him due to proximity and the fact Evan tolerates him.
  • Gangsta Style: When given the chance to shoot at a burning car in a show of machismo, he blasts at it repeatedly while holding the gun sideways.
  • Give Geeks a Chance: Ends up being the only one of the main trio to get laid at the party and he's easily the geekiest of the three.
  • Kavorka Man: Effortlessly seduces Nicola, the extremely out-of-his-league girl he was ogling at the beginning, as soon as he walks into the party. He even has sex with her (for all of one second).
  • Morality Pet: He's this to the dirty cops, as they often show the most concern for his well-being, such as when they feel bad for unknowingly cockblocking him.
  • Nerdy Nasalness: The most stereotypically nerdy character in the film, he speaks in a high nasal voice.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: With Officers Slater and Michaels, at least. When he finally tells them his real name, they hate it and decide to keep calling him McLovin.
  • Pinball Protagonist: He has very little agency in the plot and is mostly just manipulated or ferried around by other characters, most notably the cops. It all works out very well for him, though.
  • Smoking Is Cool: Takes a few totes from Officer Michaels' cigarette, which is one of the main visual cues to show how much cooler than Seth and Evan he is by the time they meet again.
  • Took a Level in Badass: By the end of the film, he barely resembles the awkward, nervous dork from the beginning (though a lot of it can probably be attributed to alcohol).
  • Tritagonist: Evolves from a mere supporting character into this halfway into the film as he has his own extended subplot with the drunk cops. His character arc closely parallels Seth and Evan's.

    Officer Slater and Michaels

Officer Slater and Michaels

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hader_rogen.jpg
"He was Jewish! An odd crime for a Jew to commit. Ok, so we have an African Jew wearing a hoodie."
Portrayed by: Bill Hader (Slater) and Seth Rogen (Michaels)
Voiced by: Andrés Gutíerrez Coto (Slater, Mexican Spanish dub) and Herman López (Michaels, Mexican Spanish dub)

  • Affably Evil: They are, to say the least, quite amoral and corrupt, but they are legitimelty friendly with Fogell, even feeling bad for accidentally cockblocking him and helping him look cool in front of his classmates.
  • Berserk Button: Spitting on Slater is one shot at getting decked, as Jesse learned the hard way.
  • Comically Missing the Point: A lot of the time. One example is how they try to avoid the cops, completely forgetting that they're cops as well.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: Played for Laughs, but they leave their colleagues to bleed out in some kind of battle elsewhere simply for interrupting their conversation with Fogell.
  • Dirty Cop: They use their status as cops as an excuse to do a bunch of reckless shit around town. They also casually leave other officers to die, ignoring their desperate cries for backup simply for interrupting their conversation.
  • Drinking on Duty: On the night in question, and implied to be a common occurrence.
  • Establishing Character Moment: As seen in the folder quote, them failing to comprehend what the cashier is telling them proves how heavily unreliable they are at their jobs.
  • Fat and Skinny: Downplayed in that Michaels isn't that fat, but he is still noticeably pudgier than Slater.
  • Inspector Javert: Subverted. They act as antagonists for Seth and Evan in the second half of the film, but neither of them is well-intentioned or lawful. Plus, Seth and Evan were genuinely guilty of possessing alcohol as minors.
  • Insufferable Imbecile: They are Dirty Cops who care more about engaging in debauchery and playing with their weapons than actually helping the public. They were also too stupid to comprehend the cashier's description of the robber.
  • Intergenerational Friendship: They befriend Fogell/McLovin, a nerdy teenager obviously lying about his age, and take him on some crazy adventures.
  • Jaded Washout: Both of them admit that they were exactly the same as the main characters when they were teenagers and wish to prove to themselves that they can recapture their youthful energy alongside Fogell.
  • Laughably Evil: Definitely hilarious, but they are also corrupt, drunk, callous, irresponsible sociopaths.
  • Police Are Useless: To say that they're breathlessly corrupt, incompetent, and irresponsible at their jobs is an understatement.
  • Psychopathic Manchild: They are highly amoral and hedonistic police officers who play with their weapons and equipment like toys. They also enjoy quoting Star Wars together and engage in debauchery with local teenager Fogell.
  • The Sociopath: Slater and Michaels leave their fellow officers to die For the Evulz by casually turning off their radio as they scream desperately for backup.

    Jules

Jules

Portrayed by: Emma Stone

  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: She is not only one of the most popular girls at school, but is by far the nicest/most polite character in the movie. Seth assumes she will be a drunk party animal as a popular girl, and gets equally hammered in preparation for that, only to find out that Jules does not even drink alcohol and refuses to have sex with a guy who's drunk.
  • Precision F-Strike: Jules spends the entriety of the film being a nice girl, but when Seth headbutts her upon blacking out she lets out an ear-splitting "What the FUCK?!".
  • Will They or Won't They?: Jules seems to like Seth well enough, but by the end of the film it's implied she might just see him as a friend.

    Becca

Becca

Portrayed by: Martha MacIsaac

  • Fan Disservice: Becca's an attractive girl with a nice body, but when she's inebriated to the point of blacking out her sex appeal gets pretty shaky. Evan walks out when she nearly vomits on him.
  • Hard-Drinking Party Girl: Becca is very drunk by the time Evan gets to the party and she loses all inhibition once she sees Evan.
  • Male Gaze: She's introduced cleavage-first, due to being viewed from Evan's point of view.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Seth hasn't forgiven her for the time she "ratted out" his dick-drawing habit to the teacher and principal, which made his childhood more hectic than it needed to be.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: Becca likes Evan for no other reason than because he's a Nice Guy.

    Nicola

Nicola

Portrayed by: Aviva Baumann

  • Give Geeks a Chance: Nicola is charmed by Fogell's newfound confidence and agrees to have sex with him, with both of them being completely sober.
  • Satellite Love Interest: She isn't given as much focus as Jules or Becca due to Fogell's arc getting taken over by Slater and Michaels.

    Jesse

Jesse

Portrayed by: Scott Gerbacia

  • Bullying a Dragon: Sure, hock one at a police officer and see what happens.
  • Evil Is Petty: Jesse is first introduced telling Seth about a party at his place, only so he can tell him he's not allowed to come right after spitting on Seth. He then tells Seth that his "fucking faggot friend" can't come either and wards Seth off by loudly preparing another wad of phlegm while laughing like the jerkass he is. Judging by Seth's resigned tone of voice, this is a regular occurrence.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: In his first appearance he degrades Seth just for being in his line of sight. His second and last appearance has him getting cold-cocked for trying to do the same to Slater.
  • Very Punchable Man: Slater wrecks his shit for spitting on him.

    Francis

Francis

Portrayed by: Joe Lo Truglio

  • Broke Your Arm Punching Out Cthulhu: He's dragged into a fight and manages to score a lucky hit on his attacker, but since he's not an action hero all this guarantees is that his ensuing beatdown will be even more brutal.
  • Noodle Incident: We never find out exactly what "non-violent crime" Francis committed, or what sort of people his "friends" are, or why he wasn't welcome at Mark's party. It's pretty strongly implied that his "friends" are criminals of some sort, so he may know them from a previous stint in prison.
  • Straw Loser: He's somehow an even bigger dork than Fogell.

    Mark

Mark

Portrayed by: Kevin Corrigan

  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Hes only onscreen for a few minutes, but in that time he manages to get violently outraged by every single thing.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Mark's clearly not a nice guy, but when some uninvited dork not only crashes his house party but invites total strangers, then said strangers help themselves to his booze, detergent and dance with his fiancee, it's kind of hard to deny his right to be pissed.
