    Aya Shameimaru
Aya Shameimaru

SHSL Newspaper Reporter

The protagonist of this story. Aya Shameimaru is a Tengu that can control wind and sells a newspaper service called the Bunbunmaru. She is originally introduced in Phantasmagoria of Flower View. Here, she has lost her wind powers. Instead, her Newspaper Reporter talent allows her to gather evidence/truth bullets automatically, even if there isn't a murder. Aya can also use her talent to diplomatically force a character to argue with her, ''Rebuttal Showdown''-style.

She is the victim of Chapter 1, bludgeoned by Yuugi Hoshiguma. Her Last Word is proof that perception-altering talents affect recording devices. Before Aya died, she was recording herself with a camera, where she and the recording are subjected to Rumia's blackout and Mamizou's illusion.

    Reimu Hakurei
Reimu Hakurei

SHSL ????

The original protagonist of Touhou, Reimu is a Miko who resolves incidents that happen in Gensokyo. Reimu doesn't believe in hard work, and often relies on her own luck, intuition, and raw spiritual power to solve her problems. The skill card that is supposed to describe Reimu's talent simply says "ability unknown". Reimu can check the skill card of a dead player and identify their "Last Word", what they were able to accomplish before their death.

Reimu takes over as protagonist after Aya Shameimaru's death. As of Chapter 2's murder, Reimu is still alive.

    Sakuya Izayoi
Sakuya Izayoi

SHSL Time Manipulator

Head maid of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, she faithfully serves her master, Remilia Scarlet. She fights with throwing knives and can distort the flow of time. Her talent lets her stop time for up to 3 minutes, after which she cannot stop time again within the next hour. She is introduced in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.

As of Chapter 2's murder, Sakuya Izayoi is still alive.

  • Dissonant Serenity: Her emotions never fluctuate, even as she stabs herself in the hand to prove she isn't willing to murder.
  • Expy: Behaves like Kirumi Tojo, another maid.

    Tewi Inaba
Tewi Inaba

SHSL Good Luck

A rabbit youkai who resides in Eientei, where her masters live. Tewi is a trickster who likes to pull pranks on people. Her talent gives her supernatural luck that can give her the best possible result of any sort of chance-based situation. Tewi can grant another player her luck, losing it for herself in the process. Tewi is introduced as a minor character in Imperishable Night, and is first given a speaking role in Phantasmagoria of Flower View.

As of Chapter 2's murder, Tewi Inaba is still alive.

  • Impossible Thief: Inverted Trope. Tewi somehow planted bracelets onto each participant without anyone noticing. Said bracelets snap and fall off if the wearer moves roughly, like if they got into a fight, for example.

    Seiga Kaku
Seiga Kaku

SHSL Wallpasser

A Chinese Taoist hermit who has strayed from the path of righteousness and is referred to as a "wicked hermit". She has a reputation for selfishness and doing evil things such as practicing Necromancy. Her talent lets her move through walls. She can bypass locked doors and steal things from locked containers, as long as she has a free hand to use her power. She cannot escape the killing game arena though, because Yukari Yakumo has surrounded the school with a thick layer of konjac gel that her power doesn't work on. Seiga is introduced in Ten Desires.

She tricks Yuugi Hoshiguma into killing Aya Shameimaru, and also tricks Yuugi into thinking that she is the Ultimate Despair. After the events of Chapter 1, the other players tie her up and leave her alone. She remains alive up to Chapter 2's murder.

  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She is polite and affable when first introduced. It's not until the first murder that she suddenly reveals her true colors.
  • Hope Crusher: During the Chapter 1 trial, she encourages everyone to give up on finding the truth, and if everyone admits that they are powerless, Seiga will reveal the culprit's identity for them.
  • Expy: Her role is similar to Nagito Komaeda, but a few things are reversed.
  • For the Evulz
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Several bad things happen to Seiga after the events of Chapter 1. After Yukari brings everyone back to Gensokyo for a day, Seiga is still helplessly tied up the entire time. And then Rumia brutally tortures Seiga for the identity of the Ultimate Despair. It's so bad that it triggers a false corpse discovery.
  • Walking Spoiler: She becomes an antagonistic figure during Chapter 1, just like Nagito Komaeda.

    Marisa Kirisame
Marisa Kirisame

SHSL Thief

Secondary protagonist of Touhou and Reimu Hakurei's best friend. Marisa is a magic using human with a reputation for stealing things from other people, including magic spells. Marisa's talent lets her steal a player's belongings without them noticing, without fail. She can even steal from the game masters, but doing so is against the rules.

As of Chapter 2's murder, Marisa is still alive.

  • Impossible Thief: Her ability.
  • Lethal Harmless Powers: Aya Shameimaru considers the possibility that since Marisa can steal from the shop, she can get her hands on dangerous weapons far more easily than everyone else.

    Remilia Scarlet
Remilia Scarlet

SHSL Vampire

The master of the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and master of Sakuya Izayoi. Remilia Scarlet is a powerful and dignified vampire, but she is also fairly immature, as she has not aged beyond childhood. Her talent lets her transform into a bat, once a day. If Remilia dies while in the form of a bat, she will change back to her normal form. She first debuted in Embodiment of Scarlet Devil.

She survives up to the murders of Chapter 2.

  • Genre Savvy: Has read many mystery stories. When she and Sakuya return to Gensokyo for a day, they spend the entire time reading mystery novels together.
  • What Kind of Lame Power Is Heart, Anyway?: Aya and Reimu are both disappointed with how boring Remilia's ability is.
