The Star Renegades

    In General
  • Divergent Character Evolution: Gathering ranks of Intel allows the first-generation Star Renegades to gain different development paths (with the default, Rookie, just making bonding with their allies easier). Additionally, most Progeny are versions of first-gen characters with altered skill sets. In both cases, these builds are accompanied by different unit color schemes so players can tell the difference.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: Although they all have default names, the player is able to rename any unit in the current party via the status menu.
  • Mauve Shirt: Wynn is the protagonist in the Tutorial, and the first run of the game will always include her, Nodo, and Xurx. However, future runs only give them as much of a spotlight as any other Renegade, with any combination of them having the potential to succeed.
  • Protagonist Title: "Star Renegades" refers to the playable units.
  • Ragtag Band of Misfits: A revenge-seeking girl with a giant mechanical sword, a vat-born clone raised to be a Han Solo-type scoundrel, a robot evangelist, a conspiracy theorist, a New age hippie healer, and that's just a few of them.
  • The Resistance: The playable units, the Star Renegades, are fighting against the overwhelming might of the Imperium, even stealing and co-opting their tech and resources when possible.

    J5T-1N

J5T-1N

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_j5t_1n.jpg
A drone constructed by Prof. Zurek to carry information between timelines in order to combat the Imperium.

    Wynn Syphex

Wynn Syphex

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_wynn.jpg

Basic Class: Valkyrie

After the death of their father Norian Syphex, Wynn and her twin brother Davion followed in his mecharmor-steps and joined the Defenders, lured by the promise of exotic worlds and unbelievable escapades. Through a rigorous coin toss process, Davion was assigned to the Adventure Squad. Wynn got a spot on the Analysis Group, which entailed monitoring the growth of wheat crops on Menku.

Wynn hopes to eventually live up to the first two traditions of her family - bravery and bad-assery - while avoiding the third: a penchant for being killed by villains.

  • Decoy Protagonist: The events of the introduction are completely centered around her, but unlike J5T-1N, her involvement after the first run is completely optional. She can even remark on "feeling like I'm not the leader" after Zurek and Geddon direct enough messages at the droid instead of her.
  • Kill the Ones You Love:
    • In the launch trailer, she finds her mother, who had seemingly sacrificed herself to send her away from the Imperium, alive... and assimilated by MOTHER. The mother that she faces is an Alternate reality version where Wynn was killed instead, and her mother joined the Imperium out of grief and invaded the reality where Wynn survived but she didn't.
    • In the game itself, the default Imperium Leader will be an evil version of Davion, her twin brother.
  • Powered Armor: She always wears a metal exosuit into battle.
  • Revenge: Her central motivation for fighting the Imperium.
  • Tragic Keepsake: In the trailer/opening cinematic, she has half of a pendant that belonged to her mother. Her assimilated mother (from another reality) still has the other half.

    Nodo Kalthoris

Nodo Kalthoris

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_nodo.jpg

Basic Class: Saboteur

Nodo Kalthoris was grown in a vat by DynaFlesh Industries, destined to be the greatest super-soldier in the galaxy...until master star-thief Borovian Climax stole him for resale. Although the deal fell through, the idea of raising a super-criminal child as his own tugged at Boro's heartstrings...and his purse strings.

Boro taught Nodo the fine arts of gunplay, concentration, teleportation, bomb making, and sabotage. But Nodo shined at con-artistry, from selling fake holo-phone cards to impersonating Nebolian princes.

  • Designer Babies: His bio states that he was a genetically-engineered soldier that was stolen by a space pirate and raised as his own son.
  • Fragile Speedster: Has several extremely quick moves that are excellent for disrupting enemies, but low HP and shields.
  • Lovable Rogue: He's the epitome of one, and he knows it.
  • Signature Scent: Multiple supports with him comment on his permanent stench, which is due to being raised in the universe's garbage dump.
  • Space Pirate: His profession before joining the Renegades.
  • Stripped to the Bone: His death animation involves his skeleton being blown out of his body.

    Xurx Nrza

Xurx Nrza

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_xurx.jpg

Basic Class: Archon

Xurx Nrza was the prophet-bot of the Titanium Brotherhood of Deltron, an order of funda-metalist bots. Xurx preached the return of Botula, the Titan Lord of Bots, and used his kenemancey skills to control boulders, which really dazzled potential converts.

Everything changed when Xurx returned from a junkyard pilgrimage to find his Brothers gone. Victims of a government raid? Had he missed the rapture? Did they move without telling him? Since losing his flock, Xurx evangelizes in space-ports and sells metal handicrafts on the side of the road.

  • Cargo Cult: Prone to doing this. He starts worshiping Rav'n's hover-chair in their supports.
  • Deflector Shields: Has naturally high shields of his own, and specializes in recharging the shields of his allies.
  • The Fundamentalist: A member of the Titanium Brotherhood who fights to uphold their virtues and plans to eventually sacrifice his metal frame in order to truly Level Up... preferably reincarnating into a smart toaster, according to his bond with Wynn.

    Jens Malric

Jens Malric

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_jens.jpg

Basic Class: Enforcer

Jens Malric rides alone on the dusty meteor trails of the galactic frontiers. All he needs are his gun, his rugged good looks, and his conviction that he's being monitored by an ever-shifting cabal of covert government organizations.

Jens deals out truth and justice the hard way. Are you an exo-planet pioneer family in trouble with a bot-rancher baron? Jens will help you even the score. But be warned: though he's a man of few words, MANY of those words concern the government secret program to spike the drinking water with mind-control cryo-serum.

  • Conspiracy Theorist: Regularly discusses topics such as nanobots in the water supply, or shapeshifting lizards in the government (which are proven in the setting, but he's concerned about their intent).
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: His years in the military have made him a paranoid conspiracy theorist, but he thankfully retains enough of his sanity to help fight for your side.
  • Space Marine: Once part of the Defenders force, but quit after realizing he was nothing more than a tool for the corps and an attack on the Branch Cryvidians. In addition, he has the trademark traits of a soldier: being able to do a lot of damage in short order, toss frag grenades to break the enemy ability to defend themselves, and equipped with an exoskeleton so he can make fast and deadly shots.

    Maryadi Penrave

Maryadi Penrave

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_maryadi.jpg

Basic Class: Aegis

Archaeologist Maryadi Penrave had it all: selling ancient artifacts from long-lost civilizations to museums and selling forgeries to private collectors.

Business boomed until she sold a fake Titan toe to zillionaire exo-gangster Storrum Trevex. On the run, she tricked him into looking directly into the Mirror of the Ashen Purveyor. Trevex turned into a hideous leg-and-arm monster and Maryadi went back to teaching AstroAnthropology at Qwed Community College. But she can't resist the urge to pillage a hyper-pyramid now and again...

  • Adventurer Archaeologist: Before joining the Star Renegades, her profession was hunting down valuable artifacts and selling forgeries to private collectors.
  • Attack Reflector: Her defensive skills allow her to reflect a portion of incoming damage back at enemies.
  • Barrier Warrior: Has extremely durable shields that she can use to protect her allies.
  • Stone Wall: She has extremely solid defensive skills, but her offense is a bit lacking.
  • The Syndicate: She was formerly part of one in order to fence artifacts too hot to be sold through proper channels, but she had to retire after getting caught selling a forgery to a client.

    Tark Chanlo

Tark Chanlo

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_tark.jpg

Basic Class: Marksman

On a hunting trip to New Swampington, Tark Chanlo killed the dreaded beast known as Ezhytha, the One Who Stalks, which had enslaved the small bayou town for hundreds of years.

Tark tried to ride the high by hunting more legendary beasts. He worked his way from Garzid the Great, an irradiated mechafish ravaging the sea planet of Valiantia, all the way down to Zootsie, a zub-zub that bit a few people on Krubula. Realizing he had a problem, Tark became a devoted member of Mythical Beast Hunters Anonymous.

  • BFG: Uses a sniper rifle that's about as tall as he is.
  • Friendly Sniper: Is quite amiable and uses a gigantic sniper rifle.
  • Glass Cannon: Tark is one of the most powerful damage dealers in the game. However, his pitiful shield and low HP means he cannot afford to get hit at all, especially since getting hit knocks him out of Sniper Mode.
  • Great White Hunter: A robotic version, who gained a reputation for hunting down dangerous, colony-endangering beasts and sometimes endangered species.
  • Spectacular Spinning: Several of his animations involve spinning his rifle (including his defend animation).
  • Stance System: Can freely enter Sniper Mode, which significantly slows his attacks, but greatly increases their damage.

    Senya Lanodora

Senya Lanodora

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_senya.jpg

Basic Class: Empath

Space-warlock B'ur'gara held the planet Neb inside his stasis-cube...until Senya Lanodora liberated her home with a powerful aura energy technique she learned from Kar-Kar, a 500-million-year-old voidspace-dwelling lizard guru.

Senya capitalized on this by opening voidspace retreat centers on 26 planets. But Kar-Kar's accounting wasn't as crystal clear as his psionic chakras, and Senya found herself in karmic debt to Neb's tax law. After mindfully escaping from a minimum-security prison, Senya set out to balance her qi...and her checkbook.

  • Armor-Piercing Attack: Her Mind Knife skill might not do much damage, but it completely ignores both shields and armor.
  • Granola Girl: The sci-fi version, at least. Before the Imperium invaded, she had a series of successful new age hippie health products and clubs that Wynn was a part of.
  • Power Floats: Hovers pretty much constantly.
  • The Shrink: She uses her talents to provide therapy, with some added assistance from powerful energy crystals that calm the mind.

    Bentley

Bentley

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_bentley.jpg

Basic Class: Commando

Bentley was assembled as a maintenance bot on Sturgeon 7. But when he was stolen by space pirate Brik Lazer, Bentley caught "the bug"...the space pirate bug! A quick study, Bentley soon became the most dashing privateer in the galaxy.

After infamous exploits like "The Pegasus Heist" and "The Scuttling of Pelham 123456," Bentley wrote a series of bestselling self-help holo-books, including The 7 Habits of Hightly Effective Pirates, The Plunder Driven Life, and, most recently, the baking compendium, Pie Ratings: Pirates Rate Pies.

  • Counter-Attack: Specializes in these; all of his abilities allow him to return fire should anything attack him in the following round.
  • Dual Wielding: Wields both a blaster and a rifle.
  • It's for a Book: He's a space pirate that uses his experiences to write self-help books... and one on Pie Rating (that is, rating different pie flavors).
  • Space Pirate: His main job, though it tends to be overshadowed by his novelist career.

    Davion Syphex

Davion Syphex

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_davion_hologram.jpg
Davion's projection in Wynn's comms

Basic Class: Paragon

If there's a revolution to be won, a panspeciesist universal right to defend, an ancient forest to save, or an old lady to help cross the street, Davion Syphex —golden boy of the Defender's elite Adventure Squad— will be there.

In another reality, Davion's evil doppelgänger was the leader of the raiders known as The Imperium. We don't know what was going on in that dimension, but we're happy to have beaming, sickeningly optimistic, reliable-in-a-crisis-to-an-annoying-degree Davion back in the fold.

Wynn's twin brother.

  • Bring It: Makes such a gesture when using his Riposte skill.
  • Dual Wielding: Equips both a sword and an energy gauntlet.
  • Posthumous Character: Davion is alive for part of the tutorial, but when J5T-1N arrives in the next timeline, there's already a commemorative statue honoring that Davion's life. Becomes Averted after he's unlocked.
  • Powered Armor: Like Wynn, he goes into combat wearing an exosuit.
  • Only Sane Man: Compared to everyone else, Davion is the only who isn't some sort of insane psychopath, thief, or ne'er-do-well. Even when compared to his sister, he's the more rational of the pair.
  • Sacrificial Lion: Despite being a renowned soldier, he dies during the tutorial's Hopeless Boss Fight.
  • Secret Character: He can only be used after your first successful run, due to his evil doppelganger no longer running the Imperium.
    • His Dark Paragon version is also unlocked by defeating the Omni-MOTHER.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: Not only does his Bladethrow move work, it even lets him target units in the back row!

    Kasche Jhcor

Kasche Jhcor

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_jhcor.png

Basic Class: Dragoon

As a technologist at Warmonger Corp, Kasche scanned the multiverse for advanced tech to weaponize... until he discovered the Imperium's imminent invasion. But where Kasche saw brutal interdimensional oppression, the Board of Directors saw a synergistic corporate partnership, and his pleas to warn the galaxy of its imminent destruction went unheeded.

His faith in the ethics of arms manufacturers shattered, Kasche quit. Sadly, a non-disclosure chip implanted in his brain kept him from warning anyone else about the upcoming invasion. His chip's term limit was just about to expire when he received a distress message from his brilliant classmate-turned-rival, Prof. Zurek...

A new unit/class introduced in the Version 1.1 update.

  • Human Popsicle: Was frozen in carbonite when he suggested warning the authorities about the Imperium.
  • Power Floats: Floats in midair when Supercharging his attacks.
  • Secret Character: Unlike most other characters, who are either available to purchase with Intel at the start or must be unlocked as Progeny, he must first be rescued during a run (randomly appearing in a Warmonger factory during the Dagan stage) before he becomes available to use in all future runs.
  • Stance System: Can Supercharge himself to increase his attack power and speed at the cost of burning Fury every time he attacks.

    Rav'n Tysanno

Rav'n Tysanno

Basic Class: Guardian

A new unit/class introduced in the Version 1.4 update.

After successfully suing Traxas Extraction MegaCorp for causing his Lethalium Syndrome, an incurable and debilitating genetic condition, Rav'n entered Traxas Tech to study interdimensional studies.

He was a lab assistant when a separate department's research team summoned a Quantoid — a being of pure telekinetic energy — that possessed Rav'n almost immediately. Rav'n gained control of the entity... but only after he and it had destroyed all life on Traxas.

He's been in Stasis Prison since. With the Imperium invasion, Prof. Zurek sees a chance to use Rav'n's power for good.

  • Elemental Powers: As he levels up, Rav'n gains the ability to apply different elements to his attacks; he can freely cycle through any elements he's unlocked to use the best one for the situation. Using his Entity command shares his current element with the rest of the party.
  • Handicapped Badass: Rav'n still suffers from Lethalium Syndrome, but his chair lets him absorb AOE attacks for the rest of the party, and control over the Quantoid allows him to retaliate with various elements.
  • Healing Factor: Rav'n completely regenerates his health after each fight. Gaining Relationship Values with other Renegades grants them a lesser version.
  • Limit Break: Rav'n gains one Energy per turn (up to a maximum of 5), but gains more every time he gets hit. He can spend this energy without using up his turn; he starts with the ability to fire a flurry of energy bolts, can learn to consume charges to heal himself, and can eventually spend all 5 energy at once to give himself and his teammates a significant boost in power.
  • Mechanically Unusual Class: Unlike all the other Star Renegades, Rav'n can never have any Deflector Shields. Instead, he automatically regenerates all his HP after each battle. He also uses a special energy meter that gains charges whenever he attacks or is attacked, and can be spent on various abilities.
  • Power Floats: Hovers in midair when using the Entity command to empower his team.

Special Progeny Units

    Pox Machanur

Pox Machanur

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_pox.jpg

Basic Class: Varangian

Pox Machanur—scourge of the galaxy, destroyer of worlds, arch-nemesis to all—threw his home planet into a supernova. And then he threw a few neighboring planets in for good measure. He opened a black hole near Doggo, the orphan puppy planet, and holo-streamed the entire thing.

Pox's villainy always brings the galaxy to its knees...until he's thwarted just-in-time by the valiant Nebula Boy. So why hasn't Pox been thrown in a stasis-cube prison? Well, not everything about Pox's reality adds up...and he might be the last to know.

A Progeny unit with evil intent whose parents just didn't understand him.

  • Attack Reflector: Can apply an effect to an ally that reflects a portion of incoming damage.
  • Card-Carrying Villain: Makes little attempt to hide his villainous intentions.
  • Secret Character: Unlocked from the pairing of Wynn and Xurx.
  • Sword and Gun: Equips both a sword and a blaster. Some of his attacks make use of both.
  • Thinking Up Portals: Several of his moves use portals to attack his opponents from behind.
  • Token Evil Teammate: He's an overtly evil member of the Star Renegades. Doesn't stop him from fighting alongside the rest of the Renegades to defeat the Imperium.

    Nava Tovar

Nava Tovar

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_nava.jpg

Basic Class: Spectre

Nava Tovar blasted into our time with one mission: stop Barry Gyre, who would become the robo-senator responsible for the genocidal Flux Wars. Nava then expected to be extracted back to a Flux War-less future...but was instead ordered to dispatch yet another future maniac who had popped up to replace Robo-Sen. Gyre.

Nava could get lost in the complex philosophical implications of her task, but at the end of the day, she's happy to do what she does best: assassinate people from the past who turn evil in the future.

A Progeny unit from the future, forever preventing its destruction.

  • Back Stab: The name of one of her attacks. While it's slow, it can freely target enemies in the back rows (and you can get around the slow speed by cloaking her or staggering her target).
  • Bad Future: As bad a Crapsack World as the current Star Renegades universe is, the future Nava comes from is by all accounts worse, even without the interference of the Imperium. Mention is made of events like the Flux War, widespread extinction from over-industrialism, genetically engineered brain-eating wasps, diseases that turn people into werewolves...
  • Cloaking Device: She's equipped with one. Using it restores some of her shields, forces any enemies targeting her to switch targets, and allows her next attack to happen instantly.
  • Glass Cannon: Nava has some incredibly damaging attacks at her disposal, but their long wind-up time combined with Nava having only moderate shields and the absolute lowest health in the game means pulling them off successfully can be easier said than done.
  • Professional Killer: To quote her in-game profile, "she's happy to do what she does best: assassinate people from the past who turn evil in the future".
  • Secret Character: Unlocked from the pairing of Tark and Senya.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: Her backstory. She originally arrived to stop Barry Gyre, a future Robo-Senator that would be responsible for the Flux Wars. When the job was done and her employers contacted her from the future, though, she was informed that Barry's replacement on the Robo-Senate is also evil and needed to be dealt with...

    Sidara Kymon

Sidara Kymon

Basic Class: Gunslinger

Sidara Kymon embodies the modern Tissarian lifestyle. She drives on-demand holo-skiffs in the morning, delivers nutrition pellets in the afternoons, and D Js neuro-transfer parties at night. This about covers rent. But her true goal is to make it in the cyber-assassination industry.

With all these gigs, she doesn't sleep much. But that's fine with her because when she does, she only dreams one dark thought. She won't tell us what it is, but insists it's really grim. She's pretty violent, so we're not about to question her.

  • Dual Wielding: Is holding multiple weapons in her portrait. Additionally, while multiple Renegades can carry two different weapon types, Sidara is the only one that can equip two of the same type of weapon (Blasters).
  • Guns Akimbo: Two sets of guns, since she has four arms!
  • Multi-Armed and Dangerous: She has four arms, each one of which is holding a gun.
  • Secret Character: Unlocked from the pairing of Nodo and Bentley.

    Aia Kur

Aia Kur

Basic Class: Juggernaut

Aia Kur might be a Trade Regulator agent, but her love of bureaucracy hides a volcano of passion...for even more bureaucracy! Aia always follows the Four R's—rules, regulations, red tape, and righteousness—as she travels the galaxy leading armed assaults on corporate criminal compounds and illicit weapons factories.

And Aia isn't afraid to go deep undercover either, posing as "Kaia Aur, Corporate Consultant for Shadow Tech." But no matter how she doles out justice, you can be sure of one thing: the proper paperwork has been filed in a timely manner.

  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Her undercover names aren't terribly effective at disguising her identity, tending to just be her name with the first letters switched around. (Kaia Aur, Zaia Aur, etc.)
  • Secret Character: Unlocked from the pairing of Jens and Maryadi.

Key Figures

    Professor Zurek

Professor Zurek

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_zurek.jpg
A scientist studying trans-dimensional spacetime.
  • Actually, I Am Him: The tutorial ends with an unnamed Mysterious Scientist asking J5T-1N to seek out the only person they trust, Zurek... who is immediately revealed to be her alternate-dimension past self.
  • Fling a Light into the Future: Her motivation for creating J5T-1N is to keep passing information from conquered timelines to new ones in order to eventually gain an advantage over the Imperium.

    General Geddon

General Geddon

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_geddon.jpg
The commander of the Armada's main forces.
  • An Arm and a Leg: His left arm has been replaced with a robotic limb.
  • Cigar Chomper: Has a high-tech equivalent of one in his mouth at all times.
  • Old Soldier: His grey beard indicates he's had years of experience.

    Pet the Dog
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_pet_the_dog.jpg

  • Ironic Name: He hates being petted.
  • Stop Poking Me!: Dearly wishes people would just leave him alone instead of constantly petting him.
  • Talking Animal: Vocally admonishes JST-1N for touching him without permission.

    Reporter
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/star_renegades_reporter.jpg

  • Game-Over Man: Whenever a run ends in failure, they appear to report on the Imperium's conquest, discussing topics such as Mandatory Organ Harvest Centers and if the flag will change.
