Conor

Conor

Voiced by: Carter Jackson

A student who is a big fan of the original Speed Racer. He is known for being the best mechanic in the school.

  • Cloudcuckoolander:
  • Expy: He shares the same role as Sparky in the original series, who was the mechanic to Speed's father.
  • Fanboy: Of the Original Speed Racer.
  • Genius Ditz: He is smart at building and fixing things, though he gets easily distracted.
  • Hopeless Suitor: Has a massive crush on Annalise. Though it is unlikely she will ever return those feelings given her personality and her pre-existing relationship with X.
  • Irony: The one day he decides to wear something other than his Speed Racer outfit is the beginning of the week when every student is supposed to wear the school's colors.
  • Whole Costume Reference: His outfit is a reference to the original Speed Racer.
  • Proud to Be a Geek: Conor is 100% a geek and has no shame in expressing that part of him to everyone he meets.

Lucy

Lucy

Voiced by: Sahra Mellesse

  • Cloudcuckoolander's Minder: Like Speed, she also is the one that helps curb Conor's more eccentric thoughts/activities.
  • Wrench Wench: Often helps to fix/improve the Mach 6 along with Conor. In fact, her usual attire consists of what appears to be a mechanic's uniform.

X Racer

X Racer

Voiced by: Robbie Sublett (Season One); Bryan Tyler (Season Two)

  • The Ace: I mean, come on. Look who's family he belongs to.
  • Big Man on Campus: Is the most popular student at the Academy due being the son of Speed Racer and his impressive driving skills.
  • Closet Geek: One episode sees X playing some sort of RPG game, before awkwardly trying to hide it when Speed who is invisble enters his room.
  • Dating Catwoman: Is dating Annalise Zazic, who unbeknownst to him until the end of Season One is plotting with her father to destroy both his brother and the Mach 6.
  • Fatal Flaw: Pride and stubbornness.
    • His temper and ego have landed him in trouble on more than a few occasions.
    • His selfishness too, blinds him to the bigger picture at times. Which also leads into.....
    • All of his Parental Abandonment issues regarding Speed Sr. It's not so bad in the first Season. But it really comes to a head in Season 2, where his resentment towards Speed Sr. causes him to be easily manipulated by a high-ranking member of the Shadowy Organization who tricks him into turning on his brother and friends and join the Shadowy Organization.
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Zig-zagged. X is either the foolish sibling or responsible sibling to Speed depending on the situation.
  • It's All About Me: Somewhat downplayed. X focuses a lot on his popularity and has a rather large ego in regard to his racing skills. However, he is willing to help others in need.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": In the season finale, a famous driver named Turbo McCalister (who X is a fan of) arrives at the Academy. When Trubo introduces himself to X, the teen is reduced to a blubbering mess. X even owns multiple bobbleheads of the guy.
  • Like Father, Like Son: Has definitely inherited his father's driving skills.
  • Jerk Jock: Has this behavior (mainly towards Speed) during first two episodes of The Beginning Three Parter. He gets better after the third episode onwards.

    Supporting

Spritle Racer

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/head_master.jpg
Spritle Racer

The youngest brother of the original Racer family, and headmaster of Racer Academy. He is the uncle to Speed Jr and X.

  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Will sometimes allow/aid Speed and his friends with various situations at the Academy. However, Spritle doesn't let them get away with everything and will put his foot down when he has too.
  • Same Character, But Different: Remember the kid who used to ride the Mach 5's trunk? Well, this is the same character, but matured!

Speed Racer, Sr.

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/speed_racer_the_next_generation_racing_with_the_enemy_part_1_clip_2.jpg
Speed Sr.

The original Speed Racer, and the father to both X and Speed Jr. His disappearance is one of the major mysteries of the show.

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Averted for most of the show, but in the final arc, after Speed Jr and friends change history to prevent that accident that turned Trixi into the shadow woman, he's shown to have become a narcissistical jerk who talks down to anybody not in his immediate family. He's shown disdainfully treating Rex as a looney crackpot who needs to stay away from his family, despite just how many times Rex has gone out the way for him in the past. And even when his other brother, Spritle is presumbed kidnapped, instead of worrying enough to try and search for him, he only cares more about endorsing a new product for a commercial shoot.
    • It's only after Trixi goes missing too, and he is framed and arrested for both hers and Spritle's disappearances, captured by the real villain, and put in a life-or-death situation (that Rex kept trying to warn them all of) that he is finally humbled and realizes the error of his ways.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: Once you have all the context, it's Very understandable why he thought leaving Speed and X really was for their own safety.
  • Legendary in the Sequel: Is famed and known by everyone by this point. Deconstructed in the fixed timeline where it's clearly gone to his head.
  • Older and Wiser: Visibly aged here, and a lot of his more hot-blooded and reckless traits from the first series are long gone.
  • Ungrateful Bastard/What the Hell, Hero?: In the fixed timeline, Speed doesn't think about helping out his older brother Rex Racer. This is jarring, considering Rex saved his butt many times in the original series.

Trixie Tredwell-Racer

Speed Racer Sr.'s disappeared wife and the mother of X and Speed Jr.

  • Adaptational Villainy: She is the Big Bad due to an accident she wrongfully blamed Speed Sr. for. After her children alter time, she stops being this trope.
  • First-Name Basis: Averted Trope, as she's given a last name here.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: From season one until the Family Reunion Arc where the timeline is altered and never became the Shadowy Woman.
  • Walking Spoiler: It's difficult to discuss her role in this series without mentioning that she's the Shadowy Woman.

    Antagonists

Zile Zazic

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character_large_332x363_zile.jpg
Zile Zazic

Head of Zazic Industries and one of the primary financial supporters of the Racing Academy. Unbeknownst to everyone else, he secretly plots to destroy both Speed and the Mach 6.

  • Adaptational Villainy: Captain Terror was Speed's rival and a jerk sure, but nothing about him from the original series ever even remotely indicated he wanted corporate power, or to try and sabotage Speed's personal life or goals.
  • Berserk Button: He has a particular hatred for coming in third place specifically. He claims it is because he has been third in everything his whole life, even being named after both his father and grandfather, making his full name "Zile Zazic The Third". He'll even accept coming in last place, or second-to-last, over third place.
  • Big Bad: Of the first season and the Iron Terror Arc.
  • Cyborg: In the altered timeline, he used Chimp-Chimp's technology to turn into a cyborg known as the Iron Terror.
  • Corrupt Corporate Executive: From mistreating his staff to attempting to sabotage various races, Zile fits this trope to a T.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite his cruelty towards most people, Zile still loves his daughter Annalise enough to help Speed get her out of the Virtual Track safely.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Despite being corrupt, Zile is above sacrificing his daughter, even if it means helping Speed get Annalise to safety.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: During the third part of "Comet Run", when he and Speed's team are trying to cross a Rope Bridge in their cars, he has the chance to send Speed and his friends to their dooms. After Speed explains to them how his business rival Ranford is a fraud and they are trying to expose him, Zile notes that although he hates the thought of Speed winning any race he feels it is more important that Ranford is humiliated and backs off.
  • Retired Badass: You'd be forgiven for Never being able to tell by just looking at him that This guy was Captain Terror, of all people.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Played with. While he does have some critics, no one is aware at least till the end of Season One of Zile’s true intentions.

Stan Gibbons

Serves as Zile's right-hand man in most of his schemes. Unlike his boss, Stan is a kind individual; though he lacks the intelligence to truly think for himself.

  • Brain in a Jar: In the altered timeline, he was reduced to this, he’s still annoying though.
  • Dumb Muscle: Stan probably weighs over two-hundred pounds. However, he is a very dimwitted person.
  • Retired Badass/Badass on Paper: Was (Not kidding) a member of the Car Acrobatic Team in this story. Seriously.

Annalise Zazic

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/character_large_332x363_annalise.jpg
Annalise Zazic

Voiced by: Michal "Michal the Girl" Friedman

Zile's teenage daughter and heiress to his company. Attends the Racing Academy and is X Racer's girlfriend. She treats everyone with either distain or disgust. What no one knows is that she is fully complicit in her father's plans to destroy the Mach 6.

  • Alpha Bitch: Annalise will talk-down/make fun of anyone, even her father and boyfriend (though to them she serves as a more mild example).
  • Daddy's Little Villain: Is the daughter of Zile Zazic, the main villain of Season One.
  • Heel–Face Turn: She becomes an ally of Speed and X in the second season.
  • Ret-Gone: In the altered timeline, she never was part of Racer Academy due to her parents' divorce in the past, meaning that she never met X and Speed in the new timeline.
