    Mayumi Nakanobe

Mayumi Nakanobe

The main protagonist of the game, Mayumi is 15 years old, and something of a shy quiet girl with very few friends. Five years ago, her little sister Mari disappeared at the Maten Aquarium, and since then she hasn't returned to that place... until now.

  • Determinator: Getting any Good Ending requires Mayumi to continue forward even when she's scared.
  • I Will Find You: After encountering her missing sister while her and Himeno are in the tunnel tank, Mayumi spends the majority of the game trying to find her sister through the winding, constantly changing rooms of the Manten Aquarium.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: She loses her memory of Mari in the -Fall into poison- ending.
  • Ordinary Middle School Student: Aside from her sister mysteriously disappearing five years ago she lives a very average life.
  • Parting-Words Regret: She got into a fight with Mari in the aquarium five years ago, and Mari's been missing ever since.
  • Shrinking Violet
  • Shy Blue-Haired Girl: Mayumi initially tells us that she has no friends aside from Himeno, and isn't very sociable.
  • The Smart Guy: Mayumi knows a great deal about the creatures she encounters in the aquarium, reads all of the descriptions by the tanks (while Himeno stands around waiting for her to finish), and when in the reference room in the Red Manten Aquarium, she has to stop herself from continuing to read the materials she finds there.
  • Tragic Keepsake: The key chain from the day her sister disappeared. Mari ran off after she refused to trade a blue starfish keychain for a red jellyfish one, and that led to her disappearance.

    Himeno Tamagawa

Himeno Tamagawa

Mayumi's best (and only) friend. Himeno is very interested in the rumors surrounding Manten Aquarium, and her determination to investigate them kicks off the plot.

  • Demonic Possession: Gets possessed by Rieko in one of the paths, the player can tell this has happened due to her normally green eyes turning pale blue.
  • Eyes Never Lie when she is possessed by Rieko, her green eyes turn blue. Mayumi (and the player) can tell its really her speaking when her eyes turn green again.
  • Genki Girl: Himeno is very excited about everything she does and her energy leaves little else to be expressed, much to the disdain of her best friend, Mayumi.
  • I Will Only Slow You Down: After being infected by parasites, a greatly weakened Himeno tells Mayumi she'll never make it and should be left behind.
  • The Resenter: Maybe. She said some pretty nasty things to Mayumi while possessed by Rieko, and even she isn't sure how much of it she meant.
  • Rose-Haired Sweetie: In contrast to the shy and blue-haired Mayumi, Himenno is pink-haired and very outgoing.
  • Tears of Blood: When Mayumi finds her in the Red Manten Aquarium, Himeno appears to have blood dripping down her eyes like tears.

    Kenji Hiyoshi

Kenji Hiyoshi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sod1.jpg

A young man who works part-time at the aquarium. When Mayumi finds her way into the Red Manten Aquarium he initially agrees to help her find Himeno.

  • The Cavalry: Kenji arrives in the nick of time to rescue Mayumi from the poison jellyfish.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He watched his sister choke to death without helping, and killed his own mother shortly afterward.
  • Demonic Possession: He's used by the Red Manten Aquarium's spirits to bring in more victims. It's not clear how many spirits are inside him, but it's at least the director. He was still evil before this, mind you.
  • The Dragon: To Rieko, as he helped her kill Director Isao and lured victims to the Red Manten Aquarium to aid her plans.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: In certain bad ends, he bites into Mayumi's skin.
  • Mask of Sanity: The characters (and likely the reader) have no idea he's anything other than a nice young man until The Reveal.
  • Nice Guy: Is one to the girls when he first meets them.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: Is fascinated when watching people die, including when he's doing it himself.
  • Say My Name: Calling him Kenji is the only way of snapping him out of his crazy episode.
  • Unholy Matrimony: He and fellow murderer Rieko have been in a relationship ever since they met.
  • White Hair, Black Heart
  • Would Hurt a Child: He didn't even bat an eye when he murdered Mari. Or his sister.

    Rieko Saginuma

Rieko Saginuma

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sod2.jpg

An employee at Manten Aquarium.

  • Alas, Poor Villain: Mayumi and Sayo both feel some pity for her during -The Limited Ocean of the Life- route, realizing how much the director pushed her into murdering him.
  • Ax-Crazy: Bashing a young girl's head against a glass wall, possessing another young girl, and tossing a ten year old into a showroom tank really doesn't seem to be helping her case any.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: With Director Isao Sakuragi, as her murder of him and the Deep-Sea fish created the Red Manten Aquarium which she tries to preserve until she escapes.
  • Dead All Along: Also died five years ago and only exists as a vengeful soul in the Red Manten Aquarium.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Her ideas for the aquarium five years ago are what they're best known for in the present, so her business ideas clearly had merit.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Rieko seems irredeemable and unreasonable at first, but on one route, you see her actual conversations with the director during which she tried to persuade him to take actions to help the struggling aquarium and he turned her down despite her ideas having a lot of merit. She also didn't try to kill him until he'd already tried to kill her first.

    Sayo Sakuragi

Sayo Sakuragi

"If you're having doubts, then just die."

Sayo is a mysterious girl Mayumi encounters in Manten Aquarium. she is the daughter of The Director, and is trying to find the truth behind his death.

  • Broken Pedestal: She's horrified to learn everything her father did to Rieko, though she decides to still love him anyway.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Has become Mayumi's friend in every true ending. In some of them, she warms up to Himeno and Miku as well.
  • Did Not Die That Way: The entire motivation behind Sayo being in the aquarium and in the music club in new game plus mode. She refuses to believe that her father's death was just an accident due to the circumstances around it and recent rumors coming to light.
  • Hard Head: Sayo doesn't seem to suffer from any serious or long-term damage from the times she's just knocked unconscious (excluding when her attacker isn't stopped and she's killed instead), even in the playthroughs when it happens to her twice.
  • Ice Queen: Is cold, blunt and haughty toward everyone she meets.
  • Identical Stranger: It's never made clear why, but she looks a lot like Mayumi and Mari. In fact, she looks exactly like them when they were kids, just with different hair and eye color.
  • Jerkass Woobie
  • Not So Stoic: When faced with three orcas who are about to eat her, Sayo is clearly frightened.
  • Parental Abandonment: Both of her parents have passed away (and her mother essentially abandoned her even before her death.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin
  • Sour Supporter: Sayo shoots down Mayumi at every opportunity, except when she's found something related to the mystery surrounding the aquarium. When she latter happens, Sayo keeps Mayumi around, even though it's not for every long.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She's cold, logical, and gets really flustered when she tries to become friends with Mayumi.
  • Together in Death: She ends the first two routes going on to the next life with her father.
  • Tragic Keepsake: Similar to Mayumi, she also has a key chain from the aquarium. In Sayo's case it has a picture of her and her father shortly before he died. The key chain itself was actually a gift from Mari.

    Miku Minato

Miku Mianto

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/miku_6.png

A girl Sayo met at a music club before the events of the game. After reading through the New Game Plus opening it's fairly clear the Urban Legend Himeno spoke of at the very beginning of the game is what happened to Miku that resulted in her falling into a coma before the events of the game.

  • All There in the Manual: Doesn't appear in either of the two "main" routes, but is only seen in the New Game Plus routes and scenes.
  • Advertised Extra: Has her own spot in the introductory video, despite only having a few scenes in the game's New Game Plus content.
  • Ascended Extra: Even though she's a fairly minor character in the "Limited Ocean of Life" Ending she wakes up from her coma and becomes close friends with Mayumi, Himeno, and Sayo.
  • Girly Girl: This is to contrast Sayo, who is described as dressing in a more punk/goth style. However, despite her dress and appearance, she still likes the same music as Sayo.
  • Nice Girl: She's incredibly friendly to Sayo despite all her attitude.
  • Older Than They Look: Sayo thinks Miku is an elementary school student until Miku reminds her they're in the same class.
  • Parental Abandonment: When Sayo drops off some homework for Miku, she notices that her mother doesn't spend much time with her.
  • Satellite Character: Since she's in a coma during the main story, we only get to know her in Sayo's flashbacks of meeting with her. She also doesn't actually meet Mayumi and Himeno unless you get an ending where she wakes from her coma.

    Mari Nakanobe

Mari Nakanobe

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mari_4.jpg

Mayumi's little sister, she disappeared five years ago at Manten Aquarium.

  • A Child Shall Lead Them
  • Dead All Along: Though she does appear in the Red Manten Aquarium, this is the truth of her existence.
  • Eye Colour Change: Mari's eyes turn a bright vivid blue after she overrides the Red Manten Aquarium in many of the endings.
  • Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Actually becomes something of a plot point, as her good soul is able to ward off the malice of Red Manten Aquarium and allows her sister safe passage in one of the routes.
    • This ends in the -Fall into poison- route, where Rieko convinces her that Mayumi is happy without her which drives her over the edge.
  • Powered by a Forsaken Child
  • Power Dyes Your Hair: Mari's hair turns white after she overrides the Director and Rieko for control of the Red Manten Aquarium.
  • Selfless Wish: After moving past her brief Yandere phase, she decides to wish for her sister to be happy with her friends instead of hoarding her all to herself.
  • She's All Grown Up: She gives herself a rather flattering appearance during her reign over the Red Manten Aquarium.
  • Wise Beyond Her Years
  • Yandere: While she controls the Red Manten Aquarium she tries to get Mayumi to pay attention to only her, and brutally kills the images of Mayuri's friends when she pays attention to them.

    The Director

Isao Sakuragi
