The Prentices

    Hugh Prentice 
The second son of the Marquis of Ramsgate. Went to school with Daniel Smythe-Smith and Marcus Holroyd and was friends with them, but their friendship was strained when Daniel and Hugh dueled, ending in Hugh suffering a gunshot wound that left him with a limp.

Book Smart: Easily one of the smartest characters in the series and particularly skilled at math.

    Freddie Prentice 
The first son of the Marquis of Ramsgate. He is gay.

Big Brother Instinct: As children, he kept Hugh away from their parents when they fought.

Other Gentry

    Marcus Holroyd, The Earl of Chatteris 
The only child of the previous Earl of Chatteris. Marcus met Daniel Smythe-Smith in school, and the two became close friends, so close that the Smythe-Smiths treated him like one of their own children.

     Sir George Chervil 
Stalker without a Crush: As soon as his father died, George started trying to track Anne down, fully intending to make good on his threats.

    Sir Richard Kenworthy 
A baronet who returns to London for the first time in three years in search of a wife.


Other Characters

    Anne Wynter/Annelise Sophronia Shawcross 

Dark and Troubled Past: Anne was ruined for marriage because she had premarital sex with George Chervil. This came to light a few days later, after he sexually assaulted her and she injured him in self-defense. Her father and George's father came to an agreement to keep the incident quiet and prevent further scandal. Anne was disowned and forced to leave her hometown, to be treated by her family as if she did not exist.
