WARNING: Only spoilers from the current season (Season 3) are whited out.
Characters in the past
Abigail Adams
A close friend of Katrina Crane, and wife of John Adams.
- Amateur Sleuth: When her husband was away for long trips, Abigail would solve crimes.
- Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: Her sharp mind was well-documented through the letters between her and her husband, but it is doubtful that she put away serial killers in her spare time.
- Historical Domain Character: Abigail Adams was the wife of John Adams.
- Of Corsets Sexy: her outfits show a very different side of a First Lady (and Buffy's little sister).
Arthur Bernard
A man accused of writing propaganda against the British under the pseudonym "Cicero." He was tortured and interrogated by Ichabod Crane.
- Death by Origin Story: His death causes Ichabod to cross a Moral Event Horizon and defect from the British.
- Easily Forgiven: He handles being tortured and almost killed very well.
- Rebel Leader: As Cicero.
- Thanatos Gambit: Arthur knew even before he met Ichabod that he would have to forfeit his life to save The Chosen One and the future, Because Destiny Says So.
Lachlan Fredricks
A warlock who owned Fredricks Manor, a mansion heavily enchanted to protect its occupants from harm.
- Gentleman Wizard: He's affable and modest.
- Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: How he met his untimely end.
- True Companions: With Grace Dixon.
Thomas Jefferson
Founding Father and the third President of the United States. He has himself preserved as a hologram in the Fenestella, an underground vault of knowledge.
- Beethoven Was an Alien Spy: Any Founding Father who was a contemporary of Ichabod Crane will be this.
- Good Is Not Nice: Allows innocent people to get trapped within the lair and die to feed the supernatural guardians protecting it.
- Locked Out of the Loop: He estranged himself from Ichabod to prevent him from discovering the Ancient Conspiracy ahead of schedule.
- Magic Librarian: Planned to be this to the Witnesses in the future, and was maintained in hologram form by Magitek as well.
- The Needs of the Many: His reason for not allowing the Witnesses to save two men trapped in the vault.
Solomon Kent
A former minister of the Massachusetts Bay colonies in the 17th century, Solomon Kent was also secretly a warlock and ironically started the Salem Witch Trials. He was trapped in Purgatory until recently, and now seeks John Dee's Grand Grimoire and will stop at nothing to get it.
- Affably Evil: Still carries an air of gentleness and charm in the modern day, even though he's by this point a murderous Warlock.
- The Archmage: The former leader of his coven, his powers are vastly superior to Katrina's, not to mention towards the majority of witches in Salem. It took an entire coven banding together the first time around to stop him, and all they did was imprison him in Purgatory.
- Badass Longcoat: Keeps his puritan gear in the modern age.
- Blood Magic: The primary source from which Kent draws his power.
- Covered with Scars: His body has dozens, stemming from him cutting himself to perform his blood magic.
- The Dreaded: Katrina refers to him as "the Warlock all Witches Fear."
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: The main motivation for all the carnage and death he leaves behind in his wake is to be with his love Sarah Osborne.
- Evil Sorcerer: Not originally, but this is what he ended up as.
- Face–Heel Turn: A former beloved and caring Reverend, corrupted by an accidental murder and his own use of dark magic to save himself.
- Fallen Hero: A once greatly revered and respected reverend, fallen to dangerous evil Sorcerer.
- Prophet Eyes: His eyes turn white whenever he uses his magic.
- Salem Is Witch Country: He was a warlock that led a coven of witches in Salem.
- Sinister Minister: A former respected and beloved Reverend of the town. Following his corruption he became this.
- The Witch Hunter: Despite being a warlock himself, Solomon was this. He ignited the Salem Trials because he accidentally killed his love Sarah and covered it up after the fact, pretending she was a witch and subsequently hunting down other witches so they would not oppose him.
Helena Van Tassel
- Salem Is Witch Country: She was a member of a witch coven that lived in Salem before they were persecuted by Solomon Kent and the other Puritans.
Mary Wells
Ichabod's fiancée, who follows him to the Colonies to remind him of their betrothal. Ichabod tries to let her down gently, but Mary is determined to win him back.
- Arranged Marriage: She and Ichabod were promised to each other as children by their fathers, who were close business partners.
- Deadly Dodging: When she tried to attack Katrina for "bewitching" Ichabod, Katrina avoided her and she tripped on an exposed tree root, and fell off a cliff.
- Stringy-Haired Ghost Girl: When she returns in the present.
- Yandere: Both in life and undeath, she wants Ichabod all to herself. Her attempts to get rid of perceived rivals just get a little more aggressive.
Characters in the present
Lena Gilbert
- Break the Cutie: Being kidnapped by a tree demon and kept locked in a closet for days, while sticking you with very painful thorns, will definitely traumatize a person.
- Genre Blindness: Maybe going into a haunted house isn't such a good idea.
- Spear Carrier: The investigation into her disappearance and her family's close connection to Katrina lead to the discovery that the Cranes had a son.
- Token White: She is the only white woman in Season 1 who isn't evil, dead, or stuck in limbo.
J. Rutledge
- Apologetic Attacker: He's genuinely upset about kidnapping Ichabod.
- Off with His Head!: Courtesy of the Headless Horseman, who uses it to create a very special lantern.
- Well-Intentioned Extremist: He wants Ichabod to kill himself but only to destroy the Horseman.
Carmilla Pines
A notorious treasure huntress and the godmother of Nick Hawley who was turned into a vetala, a deadly vampiric creature of Hindu legend.
- Dodge the Bullet: She manages to dodge one fired from Abbie as this is one of her powers as a vetala.
- Eerie Pale-Skinned Brunette: As only Jaime Murray can play.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite her dark nature, it's clear she still cares for Hawley. She just has a twisted way of showing it, namely by turning into a vetala just like her.
- Femme Fatale: Slim, sexy and incredibly dangerous, Carmilla definitely fits the bill.
- Our Vampires Are Different: Being the Indian version of a vampire would mark some differences; Carmilla doesn't require blood to survive, only occasionally shows her monstrous form and is invulnerable to everything except iron and fire.
- Super-Strength: One of her powers as a vetala.
God
The absolute highest being in existence, the creator of it all, and the sole primordial deity.
- The Omnipotent: As the sole primordial being, as well as the creator of all existence, God possesses infinite power.
