Samantha "Sam" Baker
- A-Cup Angst: She is insecure about her looks. Her small breasts are a bugbear to her. She seems to think eating carrots will increase her breast size.
- Betty and Veronica: The Betty to Caroline's Veronica with Jake as the Archie.
- Daddy's Girl: Has a nice moment with her father one night proving she is much closer to him.
- Deadpan Snarker: The typical way Sam deals with the crap in her life.
- Fiery Redhead: Not exactly hot-tempered, but she is as passive-aggressive and snarky as her hair is auburn.
- I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: She can't believe the handsome, popular guy she's crushed on forever actually likes her back.
- I'm Not Pretty: She describes her looks as "utterly forgettable".
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: She's angsty and stubborn as many teenagers are at that age but she appears to be a good person deep down and still genuinely loves her family.
- Youthful Freckles: Has plenty of them on her face.
Jake Ryan
- Lonely Rich Kid: Jake is a senior in high school who drives a Porsche 944, lives in a mansion containing a wine cellar, and we never see his parents in the movie.
- First Guy Wins
Ted
- Abhorrent Admirer: Sam certainly thinks so.
- AM/FM Characterization: Ted seems to have a Beatles song for every occasion.
- Casanova Wannabe: To Sam, so much.
- Slimeball
- Likes Older Women: At the dance, Ted states that one of the reasons he is interested in Sam is because she is a sophomore and "developed." Near the end of the movie, Ted appears to hook up with Caroline, the prom queen and senior, and likes it.
Long Duk Dong
- Asian and Nerdy: And how.
- Token Minority: He is one of the few minorities you see in the movie and the only minority to have a significant part in the movie.

- Good Parents: He feels bad when he forgets his daughters birthday. He genuinely loves his family still.

- Adults Are Useless: While she seems to have well-meaning intentions, she is not as organized or as in control as Jim is.

- Ms. Fanservice: We get a lingering shot of her washing herself in the shower.
