    Freelance Animators
These are independent animation industrial workers not affiliated with any animation companies. They would take one cut scene or episode per case for a company from that company's production department, and are expected to due whenever that company's production staff requested them to finish those cases. The pro for them is they are able to work on various different anime projects at any given time where ever they live, but the con is they would have to fend for their own social benefits, such as healthcare.

Misato Segawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bee4b0ab114fe9c89e5010376565639d.png
Position: Key Animator / Animation Supervisor (Exodus!, Episodes 4 and 9)
Voiced by: Kotomi Yamakawa (Japanese), Patricia Duran (English)

A veteran freelancer who did a lot of key animation for Exodus! and also moonlights as supervisor for some episodes. She is extremely diligent and reliable, taking tough assignments and always completing them on time. She also encourages the younger generation and expresses concern if she sees the quality of someone else's work slipping. Apparently she had some history with Endou, given that she was uneasy about him during the "3D crisis".

  • Cool Big Sis: Has a nurturing personality toward the younger women in the business, and both Aoi and Ema admire her skill and maturity.
  • D-Cup Distress: Although it's very downplayed because she never says she hates having large breasts and it's not a recurring topic in the series, she remarks in her first scene that she gets stiffness in her shoulders often, which makes Aoi contemplate how hard it must be living with the inconvenience of large breasts.
  • Determinator: Though she was reluctant to at first, she decides to take on the responsibility of drawing the final important cut for episode 3 of Exodus in a days time, without half-assing it either. She manages to get it done just in time, but she ends up getting temporarily sick as a result of exhaustion.
  • Disappointed in You: She gives a particularly harsh criticism of Ema's work in Episode 7, saying that it wasn't up to what she expected of Ema.
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: Segawa is one for Endou who claims not to like the way she draws key frames and makes a big show of not wanting to work with her, seeming to blow their differences way out of proportion. Notably, this is apparently one-sided on Endou's part: she's aware of his issues with her but doesn't seem to have issues with him
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: She can be rather stern when it comes to people who make her job more difficult, but shows a warmer side toward people who work well with her.
  • Was Too Hard on Her: She feels a bit guilty about criticizing Ema so harshly, and is glad to see that Ema got over her depression and improved her work.

Mitsuhide Kisa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/e4fa131eca696a37591f014cb3178aa2.png
Position: Key Animator
Voiced by: Masayoshi Sugawara (Japanese), Scott Gibbs (English)

Another freelancer who's also a pretty hardcore amateur cyclist, so he often has trouble balancing his work and his hobby, running off to competition or training instead of doing his cuts.

  • Be Careful What You Wish For: He once excused himself from receiving work to focus on practicing his biking by arguing that he pulled a muscle. Aoi catches him red-handed trying to leave his apartment with his bike; some episodes later show that he injured his leg and is on a cast.
  • Brilliant, but Lazy: He can finish his cuts in time, albeit by having the production department sending him phone call after phone call, driving them crazy worried. All because of his "easy pace", and the fact that he doesn't draw when he's "not in the mood".
  • Heavy Sleeper: When sleeping or napping he is nearly impossible to wake up, and the phone rings off the hook while he's snoring—much to the frustration of whoever's urgently trying to call him.
  • Hostage Situation: His bike stool was taken hostage note  by Okitsu in order to force Kisa to finish his work for MusaAni efficiently.
  • Lovable Jock: He was on his way to attend a bike race when being caught by Aoi.
  • Shirtless Scene: Mitsuhide was really embarrassed to get caught undressed when Tarou showed up at his door with their newly employed Tsubaki and Sara without notifying him of their arrival.

Hiroshi Iketani

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/8286fd14b18ed6cc50467e5578d303e5.png
Position: Editor (Third Aerial Girls' Squad, Episode 5)
Voiced by: Masayoshi Sugawara (Japanese), Jack Ivy (English)

A freelance editor whom Yano referred to Director Kinoshita in replacement to the editor who ran off from the job of editing MusaAni's Third Aerial Girls' Squad Episode 5. Both him and Kinoshita seem to have known each other for quite some time.

  • Blunt "Yes": After Iketani says that people don't solely live for their jobs, Yano asks him if he's making enough of a living. He says "No, I'm not OK," on reflex.
  • Cuteness Proximity: He is physically unable to saying "no" to cute Yano, who always receives him with a smile every time he tries to sneak out.
  • Refusal of the Call: He's basically gave up on the industry and is actually very reluctant to work at all, which lead to the Running Gag of him constantly trying to run away.
  • Red Baron: "The Bearded Hermit" note  is what he's called.
  • Running Gag: Iketani trying to run away from the studio at the tiniest chance, and Yano always catching him each time.

    Supporting Animation Companies
When your schedules are tight, and freelancers are just not enough, one animation company would have to ask for aid from staff members of another fellow animation company. This tends to be the most risky step to take, since other companies would either most likely have their own projects to do, or, their company is financially unstable enough have staff members on the edge of procrastinating or rejecting business altogether.

Isamu Momose

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/1a38be58ed50dbab3c0420f537822945.png
Position: CEO, Komoro Studio
Voiced by: Fumihiko Inoue (Japanese), Justin Doran (English)

Long-time friend of MusaAni's Marukawa and animator Sugie and head of Komoro Studio, a long-time outsource for various frame-by-frame cel coloring cases. Normally his company would send their finished packages by internet, but when the net failed, Momose brought in the data by car in person.

  • Big Damn Heroes: MusaAni couldn't thank him enough for delivering Exodus episode 4's retake cuts in person.
  • I Was Quite a Looker: He was quite the Hunk back in his MusaPic days.
  • The Reveal: He was one of the staff members of MusaAni's predecessor, Musashino Pictures, and served as color designer for Aoi's favorite anime, Andes Chucky.

Mitsuaki Kanno

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/469ab70f37e63c3728efa90811a1ef0d.png
Position: Director / Key Animator
Voiced by: Shouto Kashii (Japanese), Mark Mendelsohn (English)

Director of the legendary mecha anime Neon Generation Avangaldon. He was referred to Aoi by Yotaka Bookshop CEO Masato Onoue, and was Aoi's last hope in receiving aid in producing the crucial cuts for their final episode of Exodus.

  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: Of Neon Genesis Evangelion director, Hideaki Anno.
  • The Only One: Deconstructs this to Aoi when he asks why she specifically asked him for help when anyone would've been acceptable, pointing out most people like to think this trope.
    • Immediately Reconstructs said trope when he tells her Sugie, the old guy working for them that everyone never thought about, is an animation genius that could actually get the project done.

Masahiro Ookura

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/01c2ee56994eb5b5502d4bdf77b92641.png
Position: CEO and Fine Artist, Ookura Koubu / Supporting Art Director (Third Aerial Girls' Squad)
Voiced by: Taketora (Japanese), David Wald (English)

A veteran art director who opened a struggling arts studio. Since Atsumi got his hands full in just painting the skies alone, his name was pitched to aid MusAni in painting the earthly landscapes for their Third Aerial Girls' Squad project.

  • Drowning His Sorrows: Ookura Koubu was apparently struggling to stay afloat before being contracted by the MusAni, so he hit the bottle pretty hard to relieve the stress — fortunately, not to the level where he couldn't paint anymore.
  • The Heart: He is rather dismissive at first glance, though he's actually a very emotional artist who is markedly adept at conveying his emotions through painting.
  • Hidden Badass: His rendering of settings and backgrounds is beyond excellent and he's a consummate artist capable of highly emotion-provoking results, though one might overlook this aspect by judging the way he behaves.
  • Ludd Was Right: Like what animator Endou was concerned about, he is a traditional painter who is suffering from the declining need in physical painting skills within the animation industry due to the rise in digital painting.
  • Respected by the Respected:
    • He and Mr. Marukawa have tremendous respect for each others' work, prompting him to accept the gig at the mere mention of his former colleague's desire to have him in the fold.
    • Aoi has nothing but praise at the sight of his rendering of the ruins of Aria's hometown, which is to be used in Third Aerial Girls' Squad. She even gets teary-eyed.
  • The Reveal: He was one of the staff members of MusaAni's predecessor, Musashino Pictures, and was the New Meat artist who did that impressive snow storm background for Aoi's favorite anime, Andes Chucky.
  • Shout-Out: He is based on veteran art director Hiromasa Ogura.

Nobuaki Nakagaichi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/a94c4a93923eb106b2402f6b97a11988.png
Position: CEO, Studio Kanabun
Voiced by: Masayoshi Sugawara (Japanese), Orlanders Jones (English)

Shimonayagi's lowerclassman in 3D computer graphics who runs a small studio with roughly five staff members on board in aiding Musashino Animation in Third Aerial Girls' Squad. Through Aoi's connection with Shimoyanagi, Misa, one of her high-school friends, was able to be hired as their 3D artist after quitting her former company, the prestigious Super Media Creations, to pursue her dream of creating graphics for the more story-oriented animation clients.

Hisamitsu Isokawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/4cf86abbb0f0865bb6cebebc4363bc7e.png
Position: Production Manager and CEO, A.C. Tsuchinoko
Voiced by: Shinji Kawada (Japanese), Gabriel Regojo (English)

A witty young entrepreneur who has just built his own animation company, Isokawa is more than glad to aid MusaAni with their various projects since they don't have many cases to produce yet. They are currently tasked in completing key animations in Episode 10, and all key animations and in-betweens of Episode 12 of Third Aerial Girls' Squad.

  • Foil: Aoi specifically contrasts his passion to give creatives a place to show off their art with Hiraoka's cynical burnout
    • More subtly, his company is shown as a foil to Studio Taitanic: while Taitanic's subcontracted episode was a disaster that required Yano finding a ringer episode director and personally supervising, A.C. Tsuchinoko is introduced by Isokawa dropping off the materials for their subcontracted episode that they completed with no issues
  • First-Name Basis: As an old friend of Yano and Hiraoka, he calls them "Daisuke" and "Erika."
  • I Was Just Joking: He frequently makes job offers to MusAni employees, only to reveal that he's kidding.
  • Older and Wiser: He's not that much older than Aoi, but he demonstrates a potential path forward for her, as a former production assistant who formed his company to facilitate artists creating their art
  • Tareme Eyes
  • Wham Line:
    • "I'm (Aoi's) boyfriend!" ...*beat*...Joking, joking.
    • On the receiving end of this when he's referred to as the president of his company, which precedes his Boss Subtitles. Considering that he's casually dressed and wearing a baseball cap, it's easy to mistake him for a delivery man.
