Shinji Ikari & Allies

    Shinji Ikari
Persona - Hamlet, the Tragic Prince
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/hamlet_6.png
Shinji in his Metaverse outfit, with his Persona Hamlet

The Third Child, called to Tokyo-3 by his father. Possesses not only the incredibly rare power of Evangelion, but also the Wild Card.

  • Alternate Personality Punishment: There has been a lot of Foreshadowing regarding how exactly Shinji ended up first entangled with the War in Heaven and The One Who Sits Upon the Throne, and by all indications the truth isn't pretty. Certain characters who are in the know treat Shinji according to whatever his past self did, even though they are all also aware that he doesn't have any memories of those actions. Gendo has apparently changed his game plan from using Shinji for his own goals with no regard for how his son is hurt to actively trying to hurt the kid as much as possible out of sheer, unmitigated spite.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: Shinji gets a bad rap due to being a Child Soldier with downright scary levels of power. People tend to focus on the incidents where he went into Unstoppable Rage, not the ones where he tried to settle things by talking, just because he's that big of a potential threat. For example, the National Police Agency was so wary about simply speaking with him that they went to the trouble of filling ferry entirely with officers in case he needed to be subdued.
  • Wrong Context Magic: Three times over. Not only does he have the power of the Wild Card, allowing him to recruit Archetypes and use multiple Personas when almost everyone only gets one, but his Evangelion power that he shares with Rei and Asuka allows him to harness the power of his Persona in the real world when that's normally considered impossible by using the soul as a vessel for the Persona (and interestingly, like them, he didn't have to face his Shadow to gain a Persona), but when fighting some Angel cultists he manifests his Evangelion inside the Metaverse, which Asuka thought impossible.

    Kensuke Aida
Persona - Ozymandias, the Forgotten King of Kings
Second Awakening - Sinbad, Sailor of the Seven Seas
Social Link - Magician
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ozymandias_5.png
Kensuke in his Metaverse outfit, with his Persona Ozymandias
Spoiler
Shinji's first roommate: an excitable and somewhat rambunctious student, with a passion for anything involving the Metaverse.
  • Cheap Costume: His Metaverse outfit looks like an obvious costume version of an Anti-Terror Task Force uniform. After his Second Awakening, it now looks like a legitimate A.T. Agent uniform.
  • Support Party Member: His Persona has no offensive powers, only able to buff allies or debuff enemies.

    Toji Suzahara
Persona - Gilgamesh, the Epic Hero of Ancient Myth
Social Link - Chariot
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gilgamesh_9.png
Toji in his Metaverse outfit, with his Persona Gilgamesh
Shinji's second roommate: a gruff and somewhat irritable student, with a mild disdain for anything involving the Metaverse and similarly crazy things.

    Mana Kirishima
Social Link - Strength
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nmze5ev.png
Mana Kirishima with LABRYS (axe) and AIGIS (shield)
An orphan who was kidnapped alongside her adoptive siblings by Shiro Tokita many years ago for the JET ALONE Project.
  • Always Someone Better: Mana was put through Training from Hell for years in a twisted experiment to surpass Evangelion. When she fights Shinji though, she's completely outclassed as soon as he gets serious, despite the fact that he's only had Evangelion for about a month.
  • Fangirl: Mana gets really into reruns of Featherman Z, partially because she wasn't allowed to watch any TV shows in JET ALONE. She's outright ecstatic when she gets to meet the show's main actresses in Nishiawakura.
  • Super-Senses: Her senses are much sharper than even that of a trained AT Agent; she immediately notices that Mayumi feels very wrong somehow, and gets a sharp headache when the Usurper orders Minako to attack.
  • Wrong Context Magic: As a result of JET ALONE, Mana's abilities are unlike anyone else's. For starters, she can use her LABRYS ax and AIGIS shield to shift into the Metaverse, and can call the weapons back if she's ever separated from them.

    Mayumi Yamagishi
Persona - Armisael, Echo of a Fallen Angel
Social Link - Hermit
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/armisael_8.png
Mayumi in her Metaverse outfit, with her Persona Armisael
The shy and bookish president of the Literature Club, who is slowly coming out of her shell.
  • Adaptational Badass: In her sole extracanonical appearance thus far (in the visual novel 2nd Impression), Mayumi was a Shrinking Violet that was essentially a Distaff Counterpart of Shinji Ikari. Here, notwithstanding her character growth during the summer road trip, she has vowed to live after breaking free from Armisael and awakening to her Persona, allowing her to participate in battle.
  • Badass Bookworm: She's the president of the Literature Club, and part of her Persona's abilities has her read from literary materials (books, scrolls, codices, etc.) to know what an enemy's affinities are or what the enemy will do next.
  • Break the Cutie: As events get closer to the August New Moon, the presence of Armisael causes her to feel more despondent and alone, to the point where she looks forward to everything ending.
  • The Navigator: Continuing in the Persona tradition of Fuuka, Rise, and Futaba.
  • Sensor Character: Part and parcel of being The Navigator.
  • Shrinking Violet: Starts out as one.

    Mister P
Persona - Gryphon, the Guardian Beast of the Divine
Social Link - Emperor
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/penpen.png
Pen-Pen in his Metaverse 'outfit', with his Persona Gryphon
The Metaverse form of Misato's pet penguin, and someone with a mysterious connection to numerous events behind the scenes.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: Played with. The narration makes it blatantly clear to the readers that Pen-Pen is Mister P, but numerous characters haven't made the connection as of yet. When Ryuji Sakamoto points out the physical similarity between Mister P and Pen-Pen to Misato Katsuragi during July the 12th, she mentally kicks herself for having not made the connection sooner.
  • Crazy-Prepared: While his identity is rather obvious, Mister P has gone to some lengths to keep it hidden even after people start suspecting him. He's able to keep his form as Pen-Pen when Misato suddenly brings him into the Metaverse. Later, she confronts him as Mister P and calls Akechi to confirm Pen-Pen's whereabouts... except Akechi is secretly in league with him, and lies that Pen-Pen is still in the apartment.
  • Expy: Word of God is that his design and mannerisms (at least as far as his appearance in the Metaverse go) were heavily inspired by Major Armstrong.
  • Troll: With shades of The Gadfly, Great Gazoo, and Guile Hero, he seems to live for pressing certain people's buttons as much as he helps out Shinji and Company within the Metaverse. His chosen methods for 'helping' are also rather questionable: how does he get Kensuke and Toji to 'join the party'? He just straight drops them into the Metaverse while they're sleeping, without telling anyone.

    Hikari Horaki
Persona - Cassandra
Social Link - Empress
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/xyubjlc.png
Hikari in her Metaverse outfit, with her Persona Cassandra
The authoritative and responsible Class Representative of Class 2-A.

NERV & Associates

    Gendo Ikari
Social Link - Devil
The Commander of NERV, and Shinji's father.
  • Wild Card: Puns aside, he's noted to be inexplicably powerful and influential in the hidden war with the Angels, but no one's sure what exactly he's up to.

    Rei Ayanami
Persona - Lilith, the Mother of Humanity
Social Link - Priestess
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/i0dwbyh.png
Rei in her Metaverse 'outfit', with her Persona Lilith
The First Child, long accustomed to facing down the Angels.
  • Emotionless Girl: As in canon, Rei rarely shows much in the way of emotion to others.

    Asuka Langley-Sohryu
Persona - Matilda
Social Link - Lovers
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/matilda_6.png
Asuka in her Metaverse outfit, with her Persona Matilda
The Second Child, originally stationed in Germany, now stationed in Japan as of September 1, 2015.

    Sister Mari "Mary" Makinami
Social Link - Temperance
A snarky Catholic sister, serving as an assistant and guardian to Asuka.

    Ritsuko Akagi
Social Link - Moon
The head of NERV's Technical Branch and the scientific lead for Project E.

    The Tokyo- 3 MAGI
Social Link - Justice
The trio of biological supercomputers — BALTHASAR, MELCHIOR, and CASPER — located at NERV HQ. A particular cycle derived from their subroutines, named PILATE, is Shinji's Social Link for the Justice Arcana.

Anti-Terror Task Force & Associates

    Misato Katsuragi
Persona - Tokoyo
Social Link - Sun
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/xladfgg.png
Misato in her Metaverse outfit, with her Persona,Tokoyo
The A.T. Task Force's liaison to NERV Headquarters in Tokyo-3.
  • Fatal Flaw: Her need for answers. While Misato is normally a considerate person, when it comes to finding answers to certain mysteries, like the identity of Mister P or anything having to do with Kaji's shadow, she can be focused to the point of obsession. Hearing that Kaji's shadow sought out Shinji and Shinji couldn't tell her what he learned (because most of it was a conversation with Marie about The One Who Sits Upon The Throne), she immediately started distrusting Shinji, to the point that his social link with her reversed. It only went back to normal after they talked and Shinji reminded her that for all his power and apparent importance, he is still a teenager and she can't keep thinking that everyone who knows something she doesn't is "against her".
  • Parental Substitute: She ends up as Mana's guardian after JET ALONE is shut down, as they'd formed a bond while in captivity. Misato herself has doubts about the arrangement, but goes along with it because the orphan girl is unlikely to open up to anyone else.

    Goro Akechi
Persona - Robin Hood
Social Link - Fortune
The chief warden of Tokyo-3's Cognitive Protection Center.
  • The Atoner: He remembers the previous timelines, and seems committed to being better this time around.
  • Chained by Fashion: His Metaverse outfit has him manacled.

    Kinshiro Morooka
Persona - Leviathan
The Commissioner of the AT Task Force, known for using his Gonkish looks to make people underestimate him.
  • Adaptational Heroism: While initially appearing to be the same one-note Jerkass as in canon, this version of Morooka turns out to be much more of a Jerk with a Heart of Gold when he's not restrained by the higher-ups. Both Ryuji and Misato respect him as a comrade, as the former worked with him during the early years of the Task Force's existence, while the latter's final trainee examination was administered by him. Ryuji, in particular, confides in him.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat: Morooka shuts down Akechi's attempts to find the missing Misato, claiming that they're too busy to spare the resources. However, Akechi notes that Morooka isn't known for being that blatantly unfair, and his wording implies that he's under heavy pressure from the higher-ups. In truth, he was hinting that Akechi should continue the search through less official means.

    Ryuji Sakamoto
Persona - Seiten Taisei
A middle-aged Cognitive Freelancer, who quickly becomes a mentor figure for Toji.
  • Ship Tease: Gets a lot of it with Misato, though both deny that anything is going on.

The Velvet Room & Associates

    Igor
Social Link - Fool
The Velvet Room's mysterious proprietor and the master of its Attendants.
  • Big Good: Igor may look creepy, but he does his best to advise Shinji and help him grow into his power. He also apparently hopes that Shinji can save the world from the cycle.

    Sokila
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/sokila_9.png
Sokila's original outfit is on the right, whilst her official Attendant outfit is on the left.
Social Link - Star
A very young girl residing in the Velvet Room, serving as the attendant to Shinji.

    The Wild Cards
Social Link - Judgement
Consisting of Minato Arisato, Yu Narukami, and Ren Amamiya, they are all second year high school students at Hakone Academy. They are Shinji's collective Social Link for the Judgement Arcana.
  • All-Powerful Bystander: All three are incredibly powerful Persona-users, but they can't risk directly getting involved, as doing so would draw unwanted attention from the other factions. However, this only extends to using their Wild Card abilities; Minato briefly fights Ghosts using Mana's weapons, while Ren takes on his Joker form to assist Shinji while not actually using a Persona.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: They have to constantly refrain from pulling on their old Social Links, or else their old friends could recall their previous lives and jeopardize everything.
  • The Older Immortal: Yu has lived hundreds of lives while Minato has lived thousands; meanwhile, Ren has only lived through two or three lifetimes.
  • Unwanted Harem: All throughout Narukami's Sidestory explaining how he arrived at the main plot, he's bewildered by how his attempts at being friendly with women wind up with him being in bed with them. This includes not only his canonical love interests from Persona 4, but also some of the women from Neon Genesis Evangelion, like Misato, Naoko, Ritsuko, and Maya. In one particular timeline, he specifically invokes the Marry Them All trope with Chie, Yukiko, Rise, and Naoto, only to view the situation as an Unwanted Harem in retrospect (as the emotional drama wasn't ultimately worth it, in his eyes).

    Marie
A former assistant for Yu Narukami, as well as the incarnation of the goddess Izanami-no-Mikoto. Is also associated with Arael.

Hakone Academy

    Keel Lorenz
Social Link - Tower
The wizened and learned principal of Hakone Academy.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: In canon Evangelion, Lorenz was part of the Big Bad Ensemble, but this version is merely the good-natured principal of Hakone Academy, who doesn't quite understand why his students seem so intimidated by him. At least, that's what he seems so far...

    Kōzō Fuyutsuki
Social Link - Hierophant
The homeroom teacher of Class 2-A.

    Kaworu Nagisa
Social Link - Death
Shinji's third roommate: a boy who has a rather weird sense of humor and a few secrets of his own.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: He comes across as a flamboyant and Innocently Insensitive pervert to his fellow students. He's also a member of the Boxing Club and has apparently never lost. This revelation elicited a Double Take from Shinji:
    Shinji: ...the Boxing Club?
Kaworu: Everyone reacts that way when I tell them that... alas, I suppose it is because I come across as a lover, instead of a fighter. A truly vexing fate, is it not?
Toji: Hardly. You couldn't make up your mind last year, so we just had you pick a Club at random out of a bucket. Don't let the slim build fool you. I've seen him knock out guys who outweighed him by fifteen kilos, and he still somehow manages to look pretty while doing it.
Kaworu: Truly, it is an unenviable curse, Toji-kun.
Shinji: ...nope, still not seeing it.
    • Kaworu later beats the crap out of Sho Minazuki, who's more than a match for Shinji himself.
  • Double Entendre: Pretty much every other word out of his mouth is a sexual innuendo of some kind, from talking about boxing as "a rousing fisting" to saying that he loves breasts (while eating chicken). Whenever someone tries to call him out on this, he innocently protests that everyone else is so vulgar-minded. No one is quite sure if he's doing this accidentally or on purpose.
  • Obfuscating Stupidity: In a talk with Rei, he reveals that he's fully aware of the larger conflict and of his previous nature as Tabris, and has no desire to get involved this time around. Additionally, he admits that he does the innuendos mostly For the Lulz.

The Angels

    As a Group
The cause of Second Impact, and opposed to humankind as a collective.

    ADAM

    Zeruel
The current designated 'leader' of the Angels.

    Sachiel
The first Angel fought by Shinji.

    Shamshel
The second Angel fought by Shinji.

    Ramiel
The third Angel fought by Shinji.

    Matarael
An Angel that was fought by Asuka Langley-Sohryu.

    Gaghiel

    Israfel

    Sandalphon

    Sahaquiel

    Iruel

    Leliel

    Bardiel

    Arael
An ambivalent Angel that is somehow connected to Marie.

    Armisael
An Angel that secretly resides within Mayumi Yamagishi.

    Tabris
Apparently cast himself away from the rest of the Angels of his own volition. Is seen as a traitor by Zeruel.

    Phanuel
A new Angel, who is now the sole bearer of the hope of ADAM.

Strega

    Takaya Sakaki

    Jin Shirato
Persona - Moros

    Sho Minazuki

Others

The One Who Sits Upon The Throne

A mysterious entity who emerged triumphant during an ancient war between ADAM and LILITH, and currently possesses a great deal of authority over aspects of reality. Opposed to the Velvet Room, they nonetheless desire Shinji Ikari to attain greater strength for a (currently) unknown purpose. Also known as the Usurper.

    Minako Arisato
Once a cheerful Wild Card in an old timeline, now mentally enslaved by the Usurper.
  • And I Must Scream: For the most part, Minako has been reduced to a Blank Slate that follows the Usurper's will, but a tiny part of her remains aware and is horrified at what's she's been forced to do over the millennia.

    Shiro Tokita
The leader of the JET ALONE project, an attempt to artificially replicate the power of Evangelion through less-than-ethical means.

    Ryoji Kaji
Social Link - Hanged Man
Runs a bar called The Melon Patch in Tokyo-3, and deals in information. His Shadow serves as Shinji's Social Link for the Hanged Man Arcana.
