Demons

    General
  • Amnesiac Dissonance: All of the Black Demon Series are really the servants of the First Vampire, Sika Madu, but they were made forget their former lives and purpose of having become demons in the first place. After their memories return, Asuramaru, Gekkōin and Kiseki-Ō betray their human hosts and try to kidnap demon Mikaela as part of their master's big plan to resurrect Mikaela as an angel.
  • Demon of Human Origin: Demons are either former humans who were born with demonic traits and/or after contact with a demon or former vampires, who were former humans themselves, transformed under certain conditions, like being deprived of human blood for several days.
  • Horned Humanoid: Most demons (save for Mahiru) are depicted with horns on their heads.
  • Humans Are the Real Monsters: Same reason as Vampires. Makes sense as most of them are former vampires.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Demons have no memory of who they were before they were turned. The only exception to this rule so far is Mahiru-no-Yo.
  • Meaningful Rename: A demon's name is essentially a Japanized version of their original name and even sounds like it. Examples include Asuramaru (Ashera Tepes) and Shikama Douji (Sika Madu).
  • Our Demons Are Different:
    • They can be sealed in what the humans call Cursed Gear. Stronger vampires make stronger demons, which make stronger Cursed Gear. Through a contract ceremony, the human tries to convince the demon to give him/her power and if they are successful, the demon makes a contract with said human and becomes their Cursed Gear. The only reason demons form this contract is to have an opportunity to steal their host's body. In return, demons lend their physical abilities (e.g. Super-Strength and Healing Factor) and Curse Power (the only thing that could overcome the regenerative skills of vampires) to the hosts.
    • Demons are creatures born from passionate desire, so they appear at the age when they were most innocent and pure, when they felt that everything was possible.
    • Demons feed off of desire, but are weakened by love. That's why it's difficult for humans to successfully form contract with demons; demons are capable of using the most passionate desires and emotions inside human heart to manipulate the potential hosts.
    • There are two types of demons: Manifestation and Possession.
      • Manifestation types demons have the convenient ability to remain in a smaller, more portable size or manifest into the full-sized weapon at will. They may have the power to cast blessings or curses. Manifestation is the state in which the user lets his or her contracted demon come out and be able to use its special power. This drastically reduces the defensive abilities of the host since the demon moves elsewhere. These types of demons work best at different ranges, and the type of ability varies.
      • Possession types are demons whose malice is too strong, making it ferocious. They refuse to submit so easily and are mean and aggressive. They are hell-bent on possessing its user, and it is common for them to engage in close combat to display their might. They cannot change into a portable size or manifest. They are more well-balanced for offense and defense than manifestation-types because activating their particular capabilities does not leave their hosts vulnerable. They increase the physical strength and power of their user. They are typically limited to close-range combat or melee fighting. They are not supposed to have the special abilities seen with manifestation-type demons.
    • There are several ranks in which demons are classified: Black Demons (which are the highest-ranking demons and thus the most powerful in terms of capability), Bodhisattva, Rakshasa, Dakini, Fiends, Wisdom Kings, Yaksha, and Myo-O (the lowest rank of demons). A person using a Black Demon is capable of killing multiple common vampires armed with second-class weapons at once and going toe-to-toe with a vampire city guard armed with a first-class weapon. It's still suicidal for them to engage in a one-on-one fight with even a lower-ranking Progenitor.
  • Pointy Ears: Like vampires, nearly all demons (except for Mahiru) have pointed ears.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Chapter 105 reveals that except for Shikama Doji, who is the First Progenitor, all of the demon of the Black Demons series were all former Third Progenitors who were taken with Sika Madu for his plan of reviving Mikaela. The only Third Progenitors left behind were Krul Tepes and Lest Karr.
  • Reincarnation: Turns out all of the original Black Demon Series were Sika Madu's angel subjects in a past life millions of years before they were reborn as humans, turned into vampires and then into demons.
  • Your Heart's Desire: Demons can see their human hosts' desires and feed on them. If the human doesn't resist enough, the demon will possess their bodies.

Black Demon Series

    Asuramaru

Asuramaru

Voiced by: Hibiku Yamamura (Japanese), Colleen Clinkenbeard (English), Carlos Siller (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/asuramaru_8.png

A high-ranked possession-type demon of the Black Demon Series. He formed a contract with Yūichirō Hyakuya and became his Cursed Gear in Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign.

He also appears in Seraph of the End: Guren Ichinose: Catastrophe at Sixteen as the cursed gear of Mahiru Hīragi.

  • Big Brother Instinct: When being near-death and Sika Madu offers him the chance to not only survive but even gain immortality, Ashera only accepted it in order to find his sister Krul.
  • Chest Burster: In Chapter 101, Yuu goes to the demon realm to save Mika and arrives by bursting out of Asuramaru's chest.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Realizing he can't beat demon Mikaela in a fair fight, even with the help of Gekkōin and Kiseki-Ō, Asuramaru decides to play dirty and attack Mikaela's heart itself, by entering Mikaela's Lotus-Eater Machine and forcing Mikaela's human self to kill the Hyakuya orphans. The attack is effective enough to break demon Mikaela and Asuramaru would have captured him if Yuu haven't arrived on time.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: His life as a human wasn't easy. His parents were nobles and he had a carefree childhood until the peasants of his village killed his family and he and his sister Krul were sold into slavery.
  • Effeminate Voice: To match his young and extremely feminine appearance, Asuramaru is voiced by a woman in Japanese and English.
  • Emergency Transformation: 1000 years ago, he was stabbed through the chest by Yuu's seraph form, leaving him on the verge of death. Sika Madu turned him into a vampire to save his life.
  • False Friend: An interesting one considering Asuramaru acts cold and distant like a typical demon towards Yu, and it takes Yu a lot of effort to break down the barriers he puts up to become anything like friends. But it turns out that Asuramaru was working for the First since the beginning and eventually betrays Yu.
  • Forgotten First Meeting: Chapter 79 reveals that he has met Yuu over a thousand years ago, back when he was still a human and just after losing Krul. Sika Madu bought him and kept him along with Yuu. Yuu becoming a Seraph (again, as Sika experiments on him a lot) and killed Ashera was why Sika resurrected him as a vampire. However, he's remembered this first meeting.
  • Friendship Denial: He denies that he and Yuu are friends. Yuu ignores his comments.
  • Hiding Behind Your Bangs: His bangs cover his left eye. Since he's a demon, being devious is part of his nature and as more of the past is revealed, he turns out to be directly connected to some of the biggest mysteries. He's secretly Krul's brother and the First Vampire's servant, having become a demon as part of a centuries long scheme that involves the angel Mikaela's resurrection and preventing a disaster in the future.
  • Identity Amnesia: He can't remember anything of who he was before becoming a demon. The only things he can remember is that he liked to stare at the sunny sky and that he had a younger sister who he abandoned.
  • Idiot Hair: He has a long strand of hair standing on the top of his head.
  • Intrigued by Humanity: He occasionally is intrigued by Yuu's actions and way of thinking, especially his willingness to sacrifice himself for his family and friends.
  • Laser-Guided Amnesia: Lost his memories after becoming a demon, but he has gained them back after chapter 79.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He has extremely long, wavy hair that makes him look incredibly feminine.
  • Long-Lost Relative: He's Ashera Tepes, Krul's long-lost brother who left her to become a demon.
  • Made a Slave: After his parents were killed, Ashera was sold into slavery and the First Progenitor, Sika Madu, bought him.
  • Magical Barefooter: He's a demon and never wears any shoes.
  • My Greatest Failure: He abandoned his little sister Krul to become a demon. Even though he has lost his memory, Asuramaru knows he came to regret it.
  • One Degree of Separation: He's the demon inside Yuu's sword and the brother of Krul, the vampire who turned Yuu's friend Mika into a vampire. Even more spoilery, he is also a servant of the First, the original Mika's father, and worked along side every other Black Weapon demon in the story, as they are also all servants of the First.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Yuu claims that he was capable of feeling Asuramaru's emotions, which is weird considering that demons aren't supposed to have emotions. This happened after Yuu shared a look with Krul, Asuramaru's younger sister, which might imply that he still might hold affection for her.
  • Really 700 Years Old: He has the appearance of a preteen boy, but being a demon, he's likely centuries old. Since he's Krul's long lost brother, that makes him around 1,000 years old.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: After he remembers his true identity and motives, Asuramaru betrays Yuu to follow his master Sika Madu's order to capture demon Mikaela and completely breaks Mikaela's mind to do it. The capture fails because Yuu comes to rescue Mikaela and Sika Madu is captured by the Progenitors. Afterwards, Sika Madu decides he has no further use for Asuramaru and refuses to save him when Yuu devours him to obtain the power he needs to protect Mika and save the world.
  • Sexy Backless Outfit: A Rare Male Example. His dress leaves his back bare.
  • Sexy Slit Dress: He wears a long dress with a thigh-high slit that reveals his bare legs.
  • Shapeshifter Guilt Trip: As he exists as a mental concept, he can appear as anyone within Yuu's memories. He often takes the forms of the 12-year-old Mikaela Hyakuya but chooses his forms depending on what he believes will be best for breaking Yu's will.
  • Shout-Out: In his first life as an angel, his name was Amon. This is a reference to Devilman where the protagonist Akira fuses with a demon named Amon.
  • Supernatural Floating Hair: He has extremely long dark blue hair that flows down in an unnatural way and seems to float in different directions as if it can defy gravity. It's actually justified because he only appears as a projection inside Yuu's mind. Before he became a demon, his hairstyle was a normal ponytail.
  • Swapped Roles: Initially, Yuu and Asuramaru's relationship is one of Asuramaru attempting to forcefully feed on Yuu while Yuu holds him back with his humanity. After Mika's death, Yuu attempts to forcefully feed on Asuramaru's power, while Asuramaru desparately tries to remind him of his humanity (having regained his memories of his sister Krul by this point). Yuu ultimately wins.
  • Symbiotic Possession: Unlike other demons and hosts, Yuu chooses to not resist Asuramaru's influence and asks the demon to become his friend. Although Asuramaru doesn't call Yuu a friend back, he has stopped trying to break his mind and take control of his body by force. Ever since, their interactions inside Yuu's mind are quite friendly.
  • Wholesome Crossdresser: He wears a nice dress and looks good in it, although nobody ever comments on it.
  • Wistful Amnesia: In Chapter 51, after Yuu and Krul looked at each other, Yuu notices that he is feeling Asuramaru's emotions. He finds this unsettling as demons aren't supposed to have emotions.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: It turns out that he has actually been working for the First Vampire all along (though he genuinely did forget his memories prior to becoming Yuu's demon). When Yuu decides to consume Asuramaru for his power in order to save Mika, Asuramaru begs the First for instructions on what to do, at which point the First tells him that he isn't needed anymore for his plan and abandons him. Yuu successfully consumes him and his power shortly after.
  • You Kill It, You Bought It: Normally, humans make a contract with demons by defeating them in combat. Yuu uniquely manages to avoid this by convincing Asuramaru that he'll be friends with him, which surprises Asuramaru enough to give Yuu a shot. Played much straighter later on. After an earlier betrayal by Asuramaru, Yuu decides to take all of his power through a battle to the death, which Yuu ultimately wins.

    Gekkōin

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/gekkouin_3.png

A high-ranked manifestation-type demon of the Black Demon Series. He formed a contract with Yoichi Saotome and became his Cursed Gear.

  • Facial Markings: The left side of his face is covered with a black, curse-like mark.
  • Mr. Fanservice: His true form in Chapter 51 is that of a handsome young man wearing an open jacket that shows off his well-built body.
  • No Shirt, Long Jacket: He wears a long, black coat that has the front open to reveal his manly chest.
  • Shapeshifter Guilt Trip: In Yoichi's mind, Gekkōin often appears as Yoichi's deceased older sister, Tomoe, to mock him about having let her die to save himself.
  • Villain Respect: Laughs in amusement after Yoichi says that he's not as nice as he shows and plans to torture Lacus to hell and back and claims that it's why he likes Yoichi. He also seems to have an okay relationship with Yoichi that's not unlike the one between Yuu and Asuramaru.

    Kiseki-Ō

Voiced by: Tomoyo Kurosawa (Japanese), Bryn Apprill (English), Emiliano Venosa (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kisekio.png

A high-ranked possession-type demon of the Black Demon Series. He formed a contract with Shihō Kimizuki and became his Cursed Gear.

    Mahiru-no-Yo/Mahiru Hīragi

Voiced by: Aya Endo (Japanese), Alexis Tipton (English), María José Moreno (Latin American Spanish)

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/mahiru_hiragi.png

The love interest and demon weapon of Guren Ichinose. She is the main female character and plays an important role in the Seraph of the End: Guren Ichinose: Catastrophe at Sixteen light novel series.

Mahiru was from the prestigious Hīragi Family, and next in line to become head of the family; however, as a namanari, she eventually turned into a demon, and ended up being sealed within Guren's sword, becoming a cursed gear called Mahiru-no-Yo.

  • Aloof Big Sister: To Shinoa. Mahiru is the only family member who cared for Shinoa and one of her main motivations was protecting her from becoming a test subject, but she always prioritized the pursuit of her goals and vehemently refused to let Shinoa get involved with her. Even when Kureto threatened to torture Shinoa, Mahiru claimed to not care. In the present, Shinoa admits to not really know anything about Mahiru and doesn't consider they ever had a close sisterly relationship.
  • Always Someone Better: She is this to Shinoa as her own successes in life left a huge shadow for Shinoa to fill in.
  • Arranged Marriage: Her family chose Shinya as her fiancé based on his physical abilities. Obviously, since Mahiru wanted nobody but Guren to be her husband, she never had any intention of marrying Shinya.
  • Beautiful Tears: In the novels, Mahiru is described as looking stunningly beautiful while she cries.
  • Became Their Own Antithesis: A lot of her unscrupulous actions from the prequel novels were for the sake of saving both Guren and Shinoa: from danger for the former, and from Shinoa's demon for the latter. In the present day, her now completely-possessed self is pushing for both their dooms in a huge reversal of everything the original Mahiru wanted for both of them: a happier life.
  • Big Sister Bully: A strangely well-intentioned example. When Shinoa was a child, Mahiru used to beat her to a bloody pulp every day in order to break her spirit, as she reasoned that would prevent Shinoa from being vulnerable to Demonic Possession.
  • Big Sister Instinct: Towards Shinoa. A lot of her actions in the prequel novel, including, most especially, her act of taking Shinoa's own inner demon from her to try to give her a normal life, were not only for Guren's sake, but for her younger sister's as well.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: She's revered as the Goddess of First Shibuya, but she's a morally ambiguous manipulative chessmaster whose goal is to get with Guren in any way possible. Though to be fair to her, she only became this when the demon she hosted in her body began corrupting her with its influence.
  • Broken Ace: Mahiru was considered easily the best member of the Hīragi family and the most suited to become the next family head for her great beauty, power, and natural talent. However, none of that could stop her from being slowly possessed by her inner demon until she became a cruel demon.
  • The Chessmaster: She manipulated both the Brotherhood of the Thousand Nights and her own family against each other.
  • Childhood Friend Romance: She loved and wanted to marry Guren since they were five years old.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: In the prequel, she backstabs every faction she assists, including the Hīragi family and Hyakuya Sect, to further her own goals.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Her corrupted self feels very jealous of the girls in Guren's squad especially because they all have feelings for him.
  • Cool Big Sis: Played With. Out of all the members of the Hīragi family, Shinoa was the only one Mahiru ever loved and genuinely cared for. However, her efforts to protect Shinoa from being weak to Demonic Possession caused her to be distant and even physically abusive towards Shinoa.
  • Corrupt the Cutie: She was a good girl who wanted to marry the guy she loved and help her little sister. However, the demon inside her took advantage of her desires and gradually turned her into a heartless demon.
  • The Corrupter: Since eight years ago, Mahiru has been feeding into Guren's corruption by Noya. And in the later chapters, it's heavily implied that she plans to corrupt her sister Shinoa as well.
  • Cute and Psycho: When under the influence of her inner demon in the prequel, Mahiru mostly still acts as her girly and cheerful self who smiles sweetly and is smitten with Guren, except her actions become more ruthless and murderous as her transformation into a full demon progresses.
  • Death of Personality: The personality of the human Mahiru Hīragi is essentially gone after her transformation into the demon Mahiru-no-Yo. What's left is the version of Mahiru that had her emotions corrupted by the demon.
  • Demonic Possession: As she was born with a demon inside her, the demonic side of her gradually took more and more time in control of her body.
  • Designer Babies: Like Shinoa, Mahiru is an artificially inseminated Namanari that was born with a demon inside her body.
  • Do You Want to Copulate?: Asks Guren this in chapter 4 of Catastrophe book 3.
Mahiru: Please, Guren... I want you to take me. Will you sleep with me? Even if I am a monster?
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite being ruthless and quite merciless to those got in her way, she did care a lot for Guren and Shinoa when she was a human.
  • Even the Girls Want Her: In the Catastrophe light novels, its mentioned that she's thought of as "beautiful" and a "goddess" by both males and females with her inspiring blushing worship in everyone. It's even lampshaded in text with the mention that "everybody seemed to adore Mahiru".
  • Fighting from the Inside: In the Catastrophe light novels, her human and demon personalities can be seen arguing and fighting for control when Mahiru-no-Yo puts Guren in danger.
  • The Heavy: She's a central villain in the prequel, is responsible for Guren being a Namanari in the first place because she was the one who made him come into contact with Noya's sword, had a lot to do with the collapse of the world, and was one of the causes for the human vs vampire conflict in the present.
  • Helpless Good Side: In the prequel, Mahiru is controlled by her demon most of the time, but her human side still pops up from time to time so she can warn Guren to not listen to her demon and beg him to kill her before she loses her humanity for good.
  • Hidden Agenda Villain: Whatever she and Guren are trying to do is a complete mystery for most of the series.
  • Hime Cut: She has parted blunt bangs, shoulder length sidelocks, and mid-thigh length straight hair to signify that she was the next Hīragi family head.
  • Human-Demon Hybrid: She was conceived through artificial insemination by using Tenri Hīragi's sperm that was imbued with a curse and placed in a demon-possessed woman.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: In the prologue of Castrophe Volume 3, she told Shinya that sometimes she wishes that she was just an ordinary girl, and not the heiress of the Hīragi family.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Back when she was human, she believed she wasn't qualified to become Guren's lover due to her being a Namanari and a guinea pig that was subjected to experiments since infancy. She even called herself a disgusting monster and thought Guren would never want to even hold her, but he did sleep with her to comfort her.
  • Knight Templar Big Sister: To prevent Shinoa from being susceptible to Demonic Possession, Mahiru beat the living daylights out of her on a daily basis since she was four years old. She also put Shinoa through some "training" to make sure she wouldn't tell anyone about the dreams where she met her demon, even if they tortured her. Mahiru even went as far as taking Shinoa's original demon (Noya) into herself to protect Shinoa.
  • Lady of War: She looks beautiful and graceful as she uses her sword to slice hundreds of soldiers.
  • Love Is a Weakness: Her love for Guren and Shinoa eventually became her downfall as her desire to have a happy life with them was what let her inner demon corrupt her mind and soul.
  • Love Makes You Evil: Her love for both Guren and Shinoa fed her inner demon more power until it led to her being completely possessed by it. One of the first symptoms of her slow descent to evil as a result of said possession was the alarming increase of sociopathy found in her actions.
  • Marry for Love: From the moment she met her arranged fiancé Shinya, she told him she wouldn't marry him because she was already in love with Guren. She ended up betraying the Hīragi family mainly because they would never allow her to marry her true love.
  • Ojou: In her human life, she was the heiress of the most powerful family in Japan and everyone revered her as a princess for it.
  • One-Woman Army: Even back when she was human, she could kill a small army of soldiers with little to no effort.
  • Parents as People: Mahiru was the only family member who taught and influenced Shinoa during the latter's formative years. However, Mahiru's "teachings" were mostly telling Shinoa to kill off any emotion and desire within herself to not let her demon possess her, even going as far as to physically abuse Shinoa in order to numb her emotions. Mahiru's influence also gave Shinoa a warped view about romantic love, making her think it's natural for her to become obsessed with a boy who was nice to her because that's what girls do. After Yuu rejects her affections, Shinoa's obsession with him takes a darker turn, making her willing to kill Mika to get any rivals for Yuu's affection out of the way, which is also likely due to Mahiru's influence.
  • Peerless Love Interest: Mahiru was the Hīragi family's "goddess" that was way out of the reach of a "rat" from the Ichinose family. Guren wanted to become powerful enough to destroy the Hīragi family and claim Mahiru as his first prize.
  • Pet the Dog: She once met a young Yuu when he was being experimented on and abused by the Hyakuya Sect. Yuu kept calling himself a demon, because his parents called him that, but Mahiru is perplexed because he looks human to her.
  • Precious Photo: She kept a photo of her 5-year-old self clinging to Guren's arm in her bedroom.
  • Promotion to Parent: Shinoa's mother died when she was born and her father was never involved in her upbringing, leaving only Mahiru to look after Shinoa during the latter's early childhood.
  • Protagonist Journey to Villain: The prequel novels detail her descent going from a kindhearted, if a bit ruthless, human to a sadistic, manipulative, and outright sociopathic demon.
  • Psychotic Smirk: She's almost always seen smiling, but those smiles of hers in the present day are sinister enough to be this instead.
  • Raised as a Host: She, like her sister Shinoa, was birthed and genetically modified with the specific purpose of becoming a potential host body for Shikama Dōji.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: Before her demise, Mahiru was slated to be the Hīragi family's next head. She also was the strongest fighter of the family.
  • School Idol: Her smarts and beauty won her over a lot of fans from her high school.
  • School Uniforms are the New Black: Even after becoming a demon, the only clothes she ever wears are a Sailor Fuku which is her old First Shibuya High School uniform.
  • Screw Destiny: Her true objective all along was to derail the First Vampire's plan to possess either her or Shinoa, as she can't stand that her entire life was planned out by the First and she wants to become the owner of her own destiny.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: She's currently the demonic host of Guren's Cursed Gear, the aptly-named Mahiru-no-Yo, and cannot act on her own unless she takes over Guren's own psyche.
  • She Is All Grown Up: When she and Guren met for the first time in ten years, he told her she had become a very beautiful woman.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: After taking a glimpse at Yuu and correctly guessing that Shinoa is growing much, much more fond of him over time, she pushes for the idea that Shinoa should pursue him, not because Mahiru personally thinks they should end up together, but because Shinoa having feelings of greed and desire would help speed up Shinoa's progress as a Namanari, turning her into a full demon.
  • Single-Target Sexuality: Just like Guren only had eyes for her, Mahiru only loved Guren since childhood.
  • Smitten Teenage Girl: In Shinya's and Shinoa's memories, Mahiru rarely stopped talking about Guren and how crazy she was about him.
  • Split-Personality Takeover: She was a Namanari: a human halfway to becoming a demon, with two personalities. After she entered her teenage years, the demon personality became dominant while the human personality could only resurface in brief glimpses. When she became a full demon, her human personality was completely consumed by Mahiru-no-Yo. However, traces of the original Mahiru's personality are still in there as her love for Guren and Shinoa remain intact, albeit twisted.
  • Star-Crossed Lovers: With Guren. The Hīragi family had oppressed the Ichinose family for centuries due to a feud from the past, so Mahiru's dream of marrying Guren was impossible as long as the Hīragi were in power. Her desperation to be with Guren made her vulnerable to the influence of her inner demon, eventually transforming her into a full demon that was sealed inside Guren's sword.
  • Teen Genius: Considered the most talented of the Hīragi. In fact, it was revealed that she was the one who developed the Cursed Gears in the first place.
  • Took a Level in Jerkass: A gradual example, and a huge sign that the demon inside of her was already wresting for control of her body within her. While originally a kindhearted individual, her inner demon slowly but surely corrupted her personality, resulting in a ton of her rather ruthless and unsavory, albeit still well-intentioned, actions throughout the prequel novel. She got even worse when she took in Shinoa's own demon from her before it was eventually returned to Shinoa again at the end of the prequel.
  • The Unfettered: She's extremely merciless towards those she considers an obstacle in her path.
  • Unholy Matrimony: With Guren. Both have turned themselves into traitorous and cruel demons as they work together in a big master plan to ruin Shikama Dōji's plan and resurrect 90% humanity in exchange for the lives of the vampires and Mika. Eventually, this even turns them into some of Yuu and Mika's main enemies.
  • Uptown Girl: Mahiru was the successor of the Hīragi family, the most powerful and prestigious exorcist family of Japan, and the love of her life Guren was the successor of a very low-class, powerless branch family.
  • We Can Rule Together: In the prequel, one of her corrupted self's main goals is convincing Guren to let himself be corrupted by a demon too so he can join her in her quest to destroy everything.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Mahiru knew humanity would be destroyed, so she set off to create weapons that would help the remaining humans survive a world ruled by vampires. She joined forces with the Brotherhood of a Thousand Nights to find a way to develop the Cursed Gear, created at the expense of the demons and ex-vampires as with the case of Asuramaru sealed there, in the process.
  • Wild Card: In the prequel, Guren actually wonders whose side Mahiru is supposed to be on as she keeps changing factions for her own goals. In the main series, she's currently playing both sides of the humans vs vampires conflict using Guren's body for as of yet unknown reasons.
  • World's Most Beautiful Woman: At least according to everyone in the school, Mahiru had the beauty of a goddess.
  • Yandere: The Corruption from her demon twisted her love for Guren, causing her to start his transformation into a Namanari so they could finally be together by becoming evil demons. She also tried to persuade Guren to kill his comrades so he would have no one but her.

    Byakkomaru
A high-ranked, manifestation-type demon of the Black Demon Series. He formed a contract with Shinya Hīragi and became his Cursed Gear.
  • Animorphism: Unlike the other demons, he usually appears as a white tiger with blue eyes, but he does have a human form as a man wearing a tiger mask.
  • The Faceless: In his humanoid form, he always wears a white tiger pelt headdress that covers the top half of his face.
  • If You Ever Do Anything To Hurt Him: He threatens Mahiru should she ever harm Shinya. She was unperturbed and threatened to kill Shinya if he found out what she's plotting.
  • Meaningful Name: His name translates as "White Tiger" and he manifests as one.
  • Noble Demon: He is the first demon seen that seems to truly care about his human host with no strings attached (even Asuramaru tries to push Yuu into becoming a demon even after they seemingly have become "friends"). He outright threatens Mahiru that he'll kill her if she harms Shinya in any way without Shinya knowing about it.
  • Panthera Awesome: He appears as a gigantic white tiger surrounded by bright blue flames.

    Raimeiki

Raimeiki

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/raimeiki.png

A high-ranked, possession-type demon of the Black Demon Series. She formed a contract with Kureto Hīragi and became his Cursed Gear.

  • Affably Evil: Though she tries to make Kureto succumb to his desires like every other demon does, she speaks to him politely (calling him "anata") and is shown to be protecting him from Shikama Douji.
  • Hot as Hell: All the demons are fairly attractive, but Raimeiki stands out for her voluptuous figure and skimpy clothing.
  • Ms. Fanservice: She wears a rather revealing black dress complete with a Cleavage Window and an open midsection.
  • Navel-Deep Neckline: Her top is covered by two black cloth strips that are wide in the middle to cover her breasts and thins out at the ends to be tied around her upper arms near the shoulders and down to her stomach.
  • Scarf of Asskicking: She's a high-ranked demon wearing a long black scarf.
  • Shock and Awe: She is able to enshroud Kureto with streaks of electricity that can be used both offensively and defensively. She is also able to use the electricity to stimulate his muscles and increase his speed; this however tears his muscle fibers apart.
  • The Smurfette Principle: She's the only woman of the Black Demons series.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: Her name translates as "Thunder Demon", fitting for her being a demon with electricity powers.
  • Tsurime Eyes: She has sharp slanted eyes, showing her demonic and alluring nature.
  • Unkempt Beauty: She has long unkempt hair, but is an absolute bombshell.
  • Vapor Wear: Her outfit completely exposes her sides and cleavage, showing she doesn't have any underwear.

    Noya

Noya

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/noya_hienma.png

A high-ranked, possession-type demon of the Black Demon Series. He formed a contract with Guren Ichinose in Seraph of the End: Guren Ichinose: Catastrophe at Sixteen and became his weapon.

  • Chest Burster: He makes his first appearance in the main series when he bursts out of Mahiru's stomach.
  • The Corrupter: He's the demon inside Guren who is constantly tempting him to do evil things.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: He has red hair and red eyes.
  • Evil Redhead: He's an evil demon with red hair.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: His extremely long hair and cute face would make anyone think he's a girl at first glance.
  • Magical Barefooter: He's a demon with the appearance of a barefoot boy.
  • Pet the Dog: When Guren's father was executed, Noya let Guren borrow his strength to carry the corpse.
  • They Killed Kenny Again: Back when he was a vampire, he had a tendency to kill the current Yu whenever he annoyed him (or for any given reason). Ashera eventually started just becoming frustrated at how often it kept happening. It basically happened every time Noya and Yu appeared in a flashback together.
  • Tsundere: In the prequel, he acts vicious and mean towards Guren, but blushes when Guren calls him a friend and doesn't protest too much against it.
  • Walking Shirtless Scene: The only time he's seen wearing a shirt is in a flashback from when he was still a vampire.

Click here to see his weapon manifestation
Click here to see his demon form

A manifestation-type demon who formed a contract with Shinoa Hīragi and became her Cursed Gear.

He is also the same demon that have possessed every head of the Hīragi Family.

  • Abusive Parent: He wasn't aware that Yuu was his son reincarnated, but he still used him for gruesome experiments and killed him repeatedly for thousands of years.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Shinoa calls him "Shi-chan".
  • Alien Blood: His blood is blue.
  • Ambiguous Gender: In Catastrophe Volume 7, his true form is described as a slim androgynous person with horns, who appears to be around twenty-five or twenty-six years old Shinoa herself couldn't tell was male or female. In the manga, male pronouns are used to refer to Shikama Dōji, but he himself states to not have an actual gender because he's not human.
  • And I Must Scream: After a failed attempt to resurrect dead angels, Sika Madu was punished by God and turned into an undead vampire. He was condemned to be burned by the sun's light without being able to die for eternity. He suffered indescribable agony for millions of years until he found a way to use Yuu's darkness to shield himself from the sun.
  • Angelic Beauty: He looks like a beautiful androgynous angelic being.
  • Bad Boss: He bought many slave children for his experiments and most of them died at the hands of seraph Yuu. He spared a few slaves and turned them into vampires, but that didn't stop him from abandoning them once they weren't of use to him anymore. Also, whenever the Seraph in his servant Yuu went crazy and started destroying things or killing people, Sika Madu would kill him and replace him with a new Yuu.
  • Big Bad Ensemble: He is one of the main villains of the story, alongside Saito.
  • Broken Pedestal: Saitō/Rigr nearly worshipped Sika Madu as a king or even a god who would lead vampires to an eternal utopia. When vampires were abandoned by him Saitō/Rigr became disillusioned and spent the next millennia chasing after Sika Madu to ruin his plans and force him to turn his attention to him again. This is a reflection of Saitō/Rigr's past life as Paimon who also looked up to Sika Madu as his king and expected him to lead the angels to God's paradise, but became disappointed in him when he broke God's law by creating his child Mikaela and refused let Mikaela die even if he had to face God's punishment for it.
  • The Corrupter: He tried to make Shinoa desire for Yuu so he can take over her body and possess her. It worked.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Ferid and Crowley attempt to kill him while he is taking over Shinoa's body, but he manages to deflect their attacks while lying down. The rest of the battle is not shown but later Ferid appears and tells Guren, Shinya, Kureto and Mika to run.
  • Deal with the Devil: After Shinoa refuses to let him possess her, he starts offering several stuff: first the chance for her to see his memories, then the chance to save her brother Kureto, then the chance to turn Mika back into a human and then, finally, the chance to return Yuu's humanity into him. Shinoa has every reason to believe that all these offers are lies.
  • Demonic Possession: He is the only known demon to possess multiple people at one time thus far in the series. He possessed Tenri at the same time he was with Shinoa and Mahiru and was possessing Kureto at the same time he was possessing Shinoa.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Mikaela's suicide was the start of his fall into despair. After the suicides of Paimon and Bael, followed by the plague killing 90% of the angel population on Earth, Sika Madu was finally broken enough to break God's law and attempt to resurrect everyone, leading to his punishment and transformation into a vampire.
  • Dissonant Serenity: Due to him being pretty much immortal and near invincible, Shikama is unperturbed by threats and the killing of his former host.
  • Divinely Appearing Demons: Looks very much like an angel with three pairs of white feathered wings protruding from his back. Adding to that, he has two white wings curved around the top of his head and two smaller wings hanging behind his ears.
  • The Dreaded: Everyone who knows him, both humans and vampires, are terrified of this guy. Even vampires, that are known for both arrogant and fearless, refer him as a monster. Considering who he is, it is no wonder.
  • Enemy Within: The Catastrophe novels reveal that he's the demon who has been residing within Shinoa's body since her birth. He's waiting for the chance she's emotionally vulnerable enough to possess her.
  • Ethereal White Dress: He wears a white or possibly a light colored dress that further emphasizes his angelic appearance.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He's seen as the ultimate evil by both humans and vampires, and his machinations sure seem to support that belief. However, his genuine love for his child Mikaela and the homunculus that kept him company, Yuu show a very humanizing side of him.
  • Evil Stole My Faith: Long ago, Sika Madu was an angel loyal to God, seeking to build the Tower of Babel and guide his followers to God's paradise in the sun. Tragically, because God's laws forbade him from creating and prolonging life, he had to watch most of the angels around him slowly die from a disease, and his child committed suicide to protect him from divine punishment. In the depths of despair, he asked God for guidance, but he never received an answer. Finally, he decided to go against God's laws and resurrect the deceased angels.
  • Face Death with Dignity: After realizing he's going to be killed by Shinoa, Sika Madu accepts his own demise and trusts Yuu and Mika are going to resurrect Mikaela and save everyone.
  • Fallen Angel: Millions of years ago, Sika Madu was the king of the angels who lived on Earth and lead a project to build a tower that would reach God's paradise in the sun. Unfortunately, God found out he broke the ultimate taboo by creating his own angel, Mikaela, and trying to bring him and other deceased angels back to life. Sika Madu was then cursed with immortality and turned into the First Vampire as divine punishment.
  • Fantastic Racism: He refers to humans as mere insects and sees them as nothing but sacrificial lambs to bring his son back to life.
  • Faux Affably Evil: He always speaks in a calm and serene way. He keeps this demeanor even while commiting obviously cruel acts. Him being most likely the strongest being in the world, and knowing it, also means that the main reason he can act in such way is because people that can kill him are very few.
  • Flying Dutchman: As punishment for defying God and attempting to resurrect the dead, Sika Madu was cursed to forever wander the Earth while being burned by the sun's light.
  • Friendly Enemy: He always acts friendly towards Shinoa. Given that he is constantly trying to possess her, it is up to debate whether he is actually being genuine or not.
  • Given Name Reveal: In Chapter 68, his name as a vampire was revealed to be Sika Madu.
  • A God I Am Not: The vampires and the humans under his control regard him as an all-powerful god, but he denies being one because he's just a fallen angel and the true God is a being even worse than him.
  • Good Parents: He was a very loving father to his child Mikaela.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: He is the First Progenitor, making him the creator of the vampire race. He is also have been possessing the head members of the Hiragi Family from who knows how long. In chapter 81, Saito confirms that he was the one behind the creation of of the Demon Army for his own personal uses. It gets subverted once he manages to take cover Shinoa Hiragi's body and takes action.
  • Hypocrite: He calls Shinoa callous for having no interest in saving her brother Kureto, who has always been anything but nice to her, when a thousand of years ago he clearly had no trouble in separating Ashera Tepes from his sister Krul and turning him into a demon, making him lose all the memories of his beloved sister.
  • In the Hood: He's seen wearing a hood that obscures his face in Krul's flashback to the time he took Ashera away.
  • Irony: When Yuu told him that he could speak telepathically with Angel Mikaela's corpse, Sika Madu lamented that his own dead son would speak with a mere "puppet" instead of him. This becomes a big irony with the revelation that Yuu is Angel Mikaela's reincarnation, meaning that Sika Madu had been talking to his son without realizing who he was all along.
  • Karmic Death: For many centuries, he controlled the Hiiragi family from the shadows for the sake of his plan to sacrifice humanity for Mikaela's resurrection and create the perfect body host for himself. He then groomed Shinoa Hiiragi to be his host and looked for any opportunity to take over her body. Once Shinoa decides she had enough of being a pawn to his machinations, she awakens her true demonic powers and uses them to absorb all of his power, killing him in the process.
  • Lack of Empathy: A trait that all vampires inherited from him, though his is shown in a much darker way. While vampires don't really care about humans in general and regard them as mere livestock they don't go on their way to kill humans without being actually necessary. Shikama, on the other hand, has killed plenty of humans, children to be more precise, for his experiments for 600 years nonstop. Even those that succeeded in his experiments didn't get that much appreciation and he eventually abandoned them all, except the Black Demons, to further his own goals.
  • Light Is Not Good: He has a beautiful face, white hair and three sets of angelic wings. He does realize the irony of having them despite his unholy nature.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He's an effeminate-looking, sexually androgynous demon with waist-length hair.
  • Love Informant: He informs Mr. Oblivious to Love Yuu that Shinoa is in love with him when the latter comes to protect Yuu from him.
  • Luke, I Am Your Father: He's the father of the angel Mikaela. Since Yuu is Mikaela's reincarnation and Sika Madu made his human vessel as well, that makes him Yuu's father.
  • Magical Barefooter: He shows himself as a barefoot angel-like being. In addition, he's the First Progenitor of vampires.
  • The Maker: Using the original eyeball Yuu's darkness, Sika Madu created humanity and populated Earth with the intention of using humans to gather the power of darkness needed to attempt a resurrection again.
  • Manipulative Bastard: He invades Yuu's heart and attacks him and Asuramaru, fulling knowing Shinoa would come to protect Yuu. Taking advantage of Shinoa's heart being at her most vulnerable, Shikama possess her body and starts transforming her into a vampire.
  • Mercury's Wings: He has two white wings curved around the top of his head. These are absent from his true physical form, though.
  • Mirror Character: As more of his past and motives are revealed, he turns out to not be much different from Guren of all people. Similar to Guren, Sika Madu wanted to protect everyone he cared about despite others telling him he had to let his child Mikaela die to avoid divine punishment. When Mikaela died, Sika Madu fell into despair and like when Guren despaired over the deaths of his friends, Sika Madu broke the taboo to resurrect the dead and God's punishment came as a result. Both Sika Madu and Guren have an unwavering determination to bring back the people that died because of their failures, which has lead them to treat everyone around them as pawns and carefully manipulate people's lives to make them move as they want to accomplish their goals. Yuu even lampshades how similar Sika Madu's predicament is to Guren's.
  • Mistaken for Pedophile: Long ago, he bought the young Ashera as a house boy. Since Shikama already had another servant boy Yuu who said his master summoned him to his chamber at night, Ashera assumed Shikama had gotten him to be his Sex Slave. The real reason why Shikama bought slaves is far more complicated; he used them as guinea pigs in his experiments with Yuu's seraph form and Yuu killed the slaves when he lost control.
  • Monster Progenitor: Before becoming a demon, he was the First Progenitor of the vampires.
  • Motherly Scientist: A male example. Millions of years ago, Sika Madu created Mikaela to use him as a test subject in an experiment. Since creating life is forbidden by God, Mikaela's existence meant he would be punished, but Sika Madu had come to love him as his son and tried everything to let him live. He was devastated when Mikaela killed himself to protect him.
  • Motherly Side Plait: A male example. His physical form wears his long hair in a braid over his left shoulder. He acted as a kind parental figure to his young servants, namely Yuu and Ashera. He was also an actual loving parent to Mikaela.
  • Mystical White Hair: He's a mysterious angelic figure with long white hair.
  • Nigh-Invulnerability: He has stated that pretty much nothing, not even a Seraph, can kill him.
  • No Body Left Behind: Shinoa absorbs all of his power and life force, causing Sika Madu to vanish into nothing.
  • The Older Immortal: He's the First Progenitor of vampires, making him older than any vampire or demon in the series and many of them are several centuries old.
  • Otherworldly and Sexually Ambiguous: Shikama looks very androgynous and even though masculine pronouns are used to refer to him, he states that angelic beings like himself don't have a concept of gender like humans do.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: His only child Mikaela died because God's law forbade angels from creating life and Mikaela killed himself when he learned about this. He then spent the next million of years preparing a master plan to resurrect his child.
  • Parental Abandonment: Aside from Ashera Tepes, he was quite neglectful towards the other vampires, and eventually abandoned them.
  • Parental Substitute: A thousand years ago, he was a fatherly figure to his servant boys Yuu and Ashera.
  • Physical God: Still not proven, but taking into account that others either call him 'monster' or 'god', he is the closest of being one in the story. Though he claims not to be the capital G God, not that he has much nice to say about Him.
  • Pint-Sized Powerhouse: He takes over Shinoa's body, a petite girl, and given the Curb-Stomp Battle he gave to Ferid and Crowley the body clearly didn't restrain his power.
  • Rank Scales with Asskicking: He is the First Progenitor, which makes him the strongest vampire of all, and quite possibly the single strongest entity in the story.
  • Royals Who Actually Do Something: Sika Madu was a king to a kindgom of angels on a prehistoric Earth. To get his people to return to Heaven, he lead a project to make a Space Elevator that would reach the sun. He also created Mikaela while he was looking for a cure for a plague that threatened to kill half of the angel population.
  • Satanic Archetype: His backstory reveals him to be the Satan equivalent in the setting. Sika Madu was a high-ranking angel until his grief and "arrogance" drove him to rebel against God to resurrect his child Mikaela and all the angels who died in a plague. Because creating, prolonging and resurrecting life are taboo according to God's law, he was punished and transformed into the first vampire, condemning him to wander on "Hell" for eternity. He then created the first generations of Progenitors, but abandoned them once he had no need for them in his plans. His initial appearances have him tempting people to commit sins to further his goals, such as offering Asuramaru/Ashera to turn him and his sister Krul into vampires to escape death (something that Asuramaru has regretted for centuries) and possessing Shinoa's body by making her give into her lustful desires towards Yuu.
  • Seeks Another's Resurrection: All the vampires and demons are failed experiments of Shikama's research which seeks to create a vessel for the sake of resurrecting his son, Mikaela.
  • Shipper with an Agenda: A particularly dark example. He wants Shinoa to give in to her growing love for Yuu because it will make it easier for him to take over her body.
  • Sinister Scythe: He can use scythe in the Mental World or when possessing a body in the material world.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: Shikama Dōji's name translates to "Four-Scythe Child", which is perfect for a demon that takes the shape of a scythe and can summon multiple scythes.
  • Supernatural Gold Eyes: Unlike other demons, who have red eyes like vampires, Shikama has bright yellow eyes, further hinting at the fact that he's special since he's really an angel.
  • Survivor Guilt: When a plague infected the angels on Earth, only Sika Madu and a handful of his followers had survived by the time the Tower of Babel was complete. His followers told him to return to God's paradise while leaving those who died behind, but Sika Madu couldn't accept it. His guilt and despair drove him to break the taboo when he attempted to resurrect everyone.
  • Take Up My Sword: Right before Shinoa kills him, Sika Madu entrusts Yuu and Mika with his three strongest spells and the mission of resurrecting the angel Mikaela. Shinoa tries to stop him to take the spells for herself, but Yuu still manages to keep some of the power to himself.
  • Time Abyss: He's old enough to have lived during the Age of Dinosaurs.
  • Tragic Villain: Long ago, Sika Madu tried to save his angel subjects from a plague and created Mikaela as a test subject, but he came to love Mikaela as his child. Because creating life is taboo according to God's law, Mikaela committed suicide to protect his father. Then, most of the angels died because of the plague. Not bearing the pain and unfairness of it all, Sika Madu attempted to resurrect all the angels, but God stopped him and cursed him by turning him into the first vampire, forbidding him from joining his child in death. Having no way to die, he spent the next millions of years carefully manipulating the evolution of humanity to create enough sacrifices to bring Mikaela back to life.
  • Trauma Conga Line: His child and right-hand man committed suicide to protect him from divine punishment. Then, his other right-hand man killed himself to follow his partner in death. Not being able to find a cure for the deadly illness that was killing the angels, Sika Madu had to watch most of his subjects die around him, but God refused to sympathize with his pain and answer his pleads for guidance. Succumbing to despair, Sika Madu chose to break the ultimate taboo by using the power of the Tower of Babel to resurrect all the angels who died on Earth. The attempt failed because God caught wind of what he was doing, punished him for breaking the law, and condemned him to wander the Earth forever as a vampire.
  • Truly Single Parent: Using the power of light, he created Mikaela from nothing, even though creating life was a big taboo for angels. He was supposed to dispose of Mikaela, but couldn't because he really viewed him as his child.
  • Undying Loyalty: Sort of, to Shinoa. After his brief tenure of being Mahiru's own Cursed Gear for a while, Shi asks that they be returned to Shinoa since "they're bonded together". Subverted, that he doesn't really care about Shinoa, only wanting to possess her body.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: His true wish is to resurrect not only his child Mikaela, but all of his angel subjects who died in a plague or were killed by God's punishment. He reincarnated the angels' souls into humans and created a plan with the ultimate goal of resurrecting Mikaela as an angel and using the power of Mikaela's light and the Sinful Keys to resurrect everyone. To achieve this, Sika Madu has sacrificed countless humans and made the entire main cast have miserable lives.
  • White Hair, Black Heart: He's a demon with long white hair and is set up as the most dangerous villain in the series because he's the First Vampire and the one who orchestrated the catastrophe that killed 90% of humanity.
  • Who Wants to Live Forever?: He has lived for eons and can't ever die because God cursed him. He says to Kureto that if the latter manages to kill him, he'll be extremely grateful of that as being unable to die is painful.
  • Winged Humanoid: He has three pairs of white feathered wings protruding from his back.
  • Worf Had the Flu: In Chapter 108, the Shinoa Squad and Saitō manage to corner him because Mahiru and Shinoa poisoned themselves with drugs to weaken him enough for Yuu and Mika to land a serious hit on him, which forces Sika to retreat and allow Saitō to capture him to avoid being captured by God's angels.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Centuries ago, he constantly bought children as slaves for his experiments, and until he bought Urd, Saito and Ashera all of said children died. This fact by itself is already quite disturbing, but reaches Nightmare Fuel when he says that he has been doing this for 600 years, leaving up to the imagination, and horror, just how many children died.

    Abaddon

  • Breath Weapon: Abaddon unleashes its fury in the form of a black beam of destruction.
  • Eldritch Abomination: Abaddon is a gigantic red and black demon with huge wings. It has long limbs and a relatively small head compared to its body size. It's mouth is full of teeth.
