    Nagisa Yamada

    Mokuzu Umino

  • Child Supplants Parent: Mokuzu says that she loves her father the most and that she fought over him with her mother. And won.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Mokuzu is very cheerful and VERY weird. No, she's not. She acts like this either to cope with her dad's abuse, as a way to cry for help, or both.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Her introduction to the class, where she rants about mermaids and claims to be one.
  • Hiding the Handicap: She doesn't tell others, even her best friend Nagisa, that she's partially deaf due to injury to one of her ears.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: Mokuzu takes a liking to Nagisa and wants to be her friend, insisting that she is a mermaid and if she doesn't make friends before the next hurricane she will die. Nagisa obviously doesn't believe her but Umino keeps tagging alongside her and that's the start of their friendship... But as it turns out, her actual life is anything but good, and it has a terrible end.
  • Meaningful Name: Umino Mokuzu means "Scraps of seaweed from the sea". Mokuzu is also a metaphor for death at sea.
  • New Transfer Student: How she's introduced.
  • The Ojou: Her father's a pretty rich guy (despite not being as famous as her used to be) and Nagisa wonders if Mokuzu's so carefree specifically because of her wealth. Later it's shown that all her school stuff is of very expensive brands, reinforcing how stinking rich the Umino family is.
Nagisa: "I could never reveal that note  to someone whose handkerchief is worth 5000 yens. Some rich girl who has yet to experience the reality of the world."
  • The Ophelia: Mokuzu's a textbook case. She's a beautiful girl who attracts many boys, is connected to water, has messy hair, and seems to be an absolute lunatic, claiming to be a mermaid, killing rabbits, and being completely indifferent to social customs. Except she's really not.
  • Raven Hair, Ivory Skin: She's described as a beautiful girl with dark eyes and hair plus pale skin.
  • Savvy Girl, Energetic Other Girl: The Energetic to Nagisa's Savvy, without doubt. Nope.
  • Stepford Smiler: Mokuzu turns out to be far more complex and sad than expected.
  • Tsundere: She acts like a Type B to Nagisa, acting happy and sweet at times and then flipping out.

    Tomohiko Yamada

  • Aloof Big Brother: Rather than resent Tomohiko for giving up his promising future and spending what little money the family has left on his Otaku interests, Nagisa and their mother think of him as modern-day Nobility.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Though he is often withdrawn and oblivious, he displays moments of stunning insight when he gives his little sister advice that cuts right to the heart of her problems. He becomes a very important support for Nagisa when Mokuzu is murdered, as the first person who believes her and joins her quest to find Mokuzu's lost corpse.
  • Cooldown Hug: He attempts to give something like this to Nagisa after telling her that he's found and seen Mokuzu's dismembered remains, covering her eyes with a hand and holding on her arm while pulling her close to him. Nagisa releases herself and soon sees Mokuzu's corpse.
  • Heroic BSoD: He suffers one of his own when he sees the dead and dismembered Mokuzu and fails to keep Nagisa from seeing her too.
  • Hikikomori: After the death of Mr. Yamada, he holed himself up in his room. When he leaves the house to help Nagisa look for Mokuzu's body, he ends up vomiting from the stress.
  • Important Haircut: When he decides to leave his room definitely, he cuts his long hair short.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He's very handsome and has long hair.

    Mrs. Yamada (Nagisa's mother)

  • Parents as People: She clearly loves her kids, but since she has to work long hours to keep the house afloat, she can't help them as much as she should.

    Masachika Umino

  • Abusive Parents: Masachika is shown to be aloof towards Mokuzu at best and emotionally abusive at worst, once leaving her behind in a grocery store parking lot simply because a defective shopping cart made him angry. That's just the tip of the iceberg: he's been beating her ever since she was a toddler (the cause behind her limp and partial deafness), he killed and dismembered her puppy, and later he beat her to death.
  • Big Fancy House: He owns an insanely cool house in the city's upscale district, and lives there with his daughter. Heartbreakingly, however, it's also the place where he ends up killing Mokuzu and dismembering her corpse; Nagisa finds a lot of proof of it in the house's otherwise lovely bathroom.
  • Idol Singer: He used to be this some years ago, but his fame has pretty much faded away - save for his songs being used in TV, specially as jungles. He seems to have invested the money he earned really well, as he and Mokuzu live in one Hell of a Big Fancy House.
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: He's very longhaired and VERY handsome.
  • Tears of Remorse: After killing Mokuzu (seemingly by hitting her harder than he intended, or probably on the head) and dismembering her corpse to take it away, he's seen crying these, and he begins to cry again when Nagisa confronts him. As he's captured by the police, he's said to have been crying too.

    Kanajima

  • Berserk Button: It's best not to harm animals in front of him. And those who accuse him of harming them will be at the receiving end of his Unstoppable Rage.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Deconstructed. He snaps on Mokuzu when she accuses him of having killed the school's rabbits, beating her until Nagisa steps in. He gets suspended from school and thrown out of the baseball club as a consequence.
  • Ordinary Highschool Student: More like an Ordinary Junior Highschool Student.
