The following is a list of characters present in the Pokémon educational fanfic series SOSchip. Note here that the main six characters are based on real friends of the author, so please only add tropes that apply to their fictional counterparts.
————————-
The Koffiehuis
An 20-year-old college student-turned-Bulbasaur who attends Fairleigh-Dickinson University and an aspiring writer. oghond is absolutely obsessed with learning languages and preserving them so they can live on forever. While intelligent, she has many flaws, especially in regards to her communication. Still, that doesn’t let her stop her from having the greatest friends a Bulbasaur could ever ask for.
Tropes associated with oghond:
- All-Loving Hero: Generally, she’s sweet and loving towards just about anybody, and hates the sight of violence so much it makes her hyperventilate. That being said, however...
- Berserk Button: Whatever you do, don’t you dare hurt any of her friends- particularly Absent. She may not like violence, but that doesn’t mean she’s not afraid to battle when necessary, as “Hostile California” and "Jeetje!" show.
- Beware the Nice Ones: oghond is one of the sweetest characters in the fanfiction. That said, though, if you do manage to make her angry, she will annihilate you. It’s most prominently seen in “Hostile California”, where, upon hearing that Aleph-Null burned down the roof of Cypress Hall, oghond releases first a Vine Whip and then an Energy Ball at Case.
- Break the Cutie: "The Sincerest Form of Flattery"'s latter half is this. After learning from Absent that the entire imitation game that the group has been practicing for throughout the episode all started because he and LF mocked her behind her back, oghond falls deeply into a depression, believing that she is being a bad friend to the other members of the Koffiehuis due to her excessive excitability. Fortunately, however, the other members of the Koffiehuis are able to snap her out of it by telling her that their flaws have only made their friendship stronger, and that they wouldn't abandon her simply because of that.
- Catchphrase: "Oh, good god..."
- Character Tics: She tends to go off on tangents a lot more when she gets nervous or embarrassed about something, and facevines very often- though not as much as Absent, of course. Her narration is also more energetic than almost everyone else's, using capitalizations and Punctuated! For! Emphasis! rather often.
- Deadpan Snarker: Not as much as Absent, but she still counts as one. It’s most notably shown in “North Cats vs. South Cats,” when, upon being asked by Madelief what O.O.C. Is Serious Business means, she dryly responds with:
- Determinator: When she wants to get something done, she will get it done.
- Failed a Spot Check: Due to her one-track mind and her tendency to monopolize conversations, she will sometimes miss important information. This is best shown in "Jeetje!", when her panicking over her friends having gone 180 in terms of their personalities completely causes her to miss the fact that she and Absent are on route to Folsom Lake College to record a YouTube video, and she doesn't realize it until Koffie announces it.
- Fangirl: She gushes about the Dutch language constantly and is such a huge fan of Rush that she has made a whole musical based on their music. "Hostile California" opens with her gushing about how much she adores musicals, and in “North Cats vs. South Cats,” she is elated upon realizing she’s learned the Dutch G. She's such a fangirl of Rush that Absent says in "The Sincerest Form Of Flattery":"[The radio playing] seven [of their songs] in sequence would practically let [her] die happy."
- Freak Out: She gets hit with this in "Jeetje!"- she spends pretty much the entire episode freaking out over the fact that all of the foreigners on board the ship have suddenly done a personality 180. However, as it turns out, she turns out to be Properly Paranoid- Aleph-Null orchestrated the whole thing.
- Heroic BSoD: Absent shuts down her optimism rather often, such as in The Sincerest Form of Flattery or in Ghost Rider.
A 19-year-old college senior-turned-Oshawott-turned-Rockruff from California. He is snarky and easily irritated, yet still a good person, and is loyal to the rest of the Koffiehuis, particularly oghond. Absent serves as the main authority on Japanese, as well as the one who asks questions about the lectures.
Tropes associated with Absent
- Arc Number: Thirteen.
- Berserk Button: Absent is very irritated by those who demonstrate an inability to learn, especially when it comes to something as simple as his name- screen, given, or both- or something that you previously showed a passion for.
- Beige Prose: Out of the entire Koffiehuis he has the most concise narrations.
- Blood Knight: Absent enjoys fighting people on the ground more than in the mechs, even saying in Ghost Rider that he would love to "throw hands" at someone in the Koffiehuis.
- Deadpan Snarker: See the above quote - about a third of his dialogue is him just taking jabs at what happens around him.
- Good Is Not Nice: Ultimately a good person, but he's not afraid to knock someone down a peg if need be.
- Gratuitous Japanese: Kare wa san gakki benkyou shimashita kara, mochiron tokidoki nihongo o tsukau. note
- Guilt Complex: Downplayed - he habitually feels some amount of responsibility for when things go south, unless it's incredibly apparent it's not his fault, or happened a long while ago.
- Hates Being Touched
- I Gave My Word: If Absent makes a promise, he's going to keep it.
- I Know Mortal Kombat: Some of his skills are loose adaptations of moves from fighting games Absent likes.
- Insult of Endearment: If Absent can't bring himself to be mad at someone, oghond can tell because he'll call them an "idiot".
- I Owe You My Life: Was recruited into the Koffiehuis via being rescued from drowning, and subsequently decided he would join in on their mission.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He thinks people can always improve in some capacity, and is not afraid to call anyone out, from HP's mother, to oghond, to the entirety of Wereldia.
- The Lancer: He is quick to question and shoot down oghond's leadership should he know she's making a dumb decision.
- Malicious Misnaming: Unlike his nicknaming tendencies described below, Absent intentionally refers to Case with names like "Case Against Humanity" and "Basket Case".
- It seems as though Absent has a laundry list of names only for those who have earned his ire. In "Turning Japanese", for instance, during his entire conversation with Monte he never uses the same name twice.
- Middle Child Syndrome: The middle child in his family, stuck between his self-sufficient sister and burden of a brother.
- The Mirror Shows Your True Self: His anger issues made manifest, Talbain, a Dusk Lycanroc, appears to him sometimes instead of his own reflection. And they don't get along that well.
- Zigzagged in that Talbain only appears in the mirror when Absent is alone.
- Must Have Caffeine: Almost any scene in the morning with him involves him holding a cup of tea or a cup of coffee.
- The Nicknamer: He seldom refers to people by their names - screen or otherwise - such as calling Madelief "Maddy", calling Dr. Vandertramp "Doc" or "Jack" or calling oghond "Em".
- No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Issues these from time to time, usually on Case.
- Not So Above It All: As seriously as he tries to take himself, he has a couple of songs in "Hostile California" and isn't above mocking oghond behind her back.
- The One Guy
- Only Sane Man: The primary voice of reason among the Koffiehuis besides oghond, assuming the reader even counts her. Although Absent's anger issues and interactions with Talbain call his mental fortitude into question.
- Rage Breaking Point: Absent has reached this a few times, sometimes lashing out with words, other times drawing blood.
- Serious Business: In his own words:I joined in to learn and teach Dutch, and Arceus' unholy flank, I'm gonna.
- Sir Swears-a-Lot: Implied and played straight. He swears on screen, ranging from his family's collective "[what] the crap?" in Hostile California to the "bitchin'" in The Mutt In The Mirror, but his taste in music is much, much more profane.
- Speaks in Shout-Outs: If he's not making cracks, he's making musical references that no one else seems to even acknowledge.
- Stepford Snarker: In Chapters 10 and 11- but mostly the latter- it's revealed most of his sarcasm is a way to keep his sanity in check, lest he snap.
- Those Two Guys: Surprisingly gets along well with LF.
- Undying Loyalty: See I Owe You My Life above.
- Who Writes This Crap?!: Absent isn't the biggest fan of some of the chapters' premises.
- Wise Beyond Their Years: At 18 years old he had more than two years of college under his belt, never mind his Only Sane Man nature mentioned above, to both the Koffiehuis and his siblings. As his epitaph put it:
The West Family
- Jerkass Has a Point: Seldom can you win an argument with her, not because she's loud or dense, but because she's right.
- Like Father, Like Son: When he learns what happened to his son, his reaction parallels one of Absent's first lines.“This is so absurd I have no choice but to believe you.”
- Stating the Simple Solution: Along with the rest of the family, she says it would have been better to lay low rather than get shapeshifted by Sierra. As she follows up on her own:"Creatures that shouldn't exist outside of RPGs are not discreet in any capacity."
- Annoying Younger Sibling: He talks over people, attempts to cuss people out, and is the first one to call out the entirety of Wereldia in Chapter 14.
- Big Eater: Implied - Absent's sister mentions that he would steal someone's side dish without even asking.
- Censored for Comedy: For some reason, any time he swears he is censored by a random Grass-type Pokemon's cry.
