Dog
- A Dog Named "Dog": Dog is a dog named Dog. Pretty self-explanatory.
- Friendless Background: Before Robot came into his life, Dog seems to be completely on his own, playing videogames by himself and looking longingly at couples.
- Named by the Adaptation: Dog is given the surname Varon in the movie, from the author of the book, Sara Varon.
- Only Friend: Robot seems to be his only companion at the beginning of the movie.
Robot
- Constantly Curious: In the beginning of the movie, Robot is shown to be enamored with the world around him, stopping to look at store items and street musicians constantly. Justified, as he was just built, so naturally the world is new to him.
- A Dog Named "Dog": Much like Dog, his name is self-explanatory.
- Extendable Arms: His robot arms and legs were designed to stretch for convenience.
- Recurring Dreams: Almost all of his dream sequences have him return to Dog's apartment and ring his doorbell at the end.
- Robot Buddy: He was built and advertised to be a friend to lonely people, naturally making him this trope.
