     Main Characters

Kate Ashley

Voiced by: Akira Tomisaka (Japanese), Melissa Davis (English)

  • Action Girl: One of the first two to put up a fight during their first battle, and from then became one of the two primary combatants.
  • Ambiguously Bi: Played with. While she dates Hervé, Kate later discovers Paula is in love with her. While it's not outright said if Kate reciprocated Paula's feelings, she doesn't outright reject Paula because she's not attracted to her and chooses to spend her last day with her memories with Paula. Their interactions imply that, if things had been different, Kate would've fully accepted Paula's love.
  • Back from the Dead
  • Dating Catwoman: She ends up dating Hervé. She's oblivious about who he is for a several episodes, but he knows from the start — it's why he pursued her in the first place.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Delivers one with Claire to Rachel in Episode 6.
  • Really 700 Years Old: In the OVA.

Rachel Benning

Voiced by: Ryōko Shintani (Japanese), Maggie Flecknoe (English)

  • Back from the Dead
  • Broken Bird: Played with. Out of all four of the girls, Rachel seems to suffer the worst emotionally as a result of the fighting intruding on her social life. While Kate, Claire and Rose have people they can depend on, Rachel's mother is an alcoholic (but not abusive) and her friends only serve to make her anxiety worse due to not understanding why Rachel's acting the way she does. By the time Rachel learns she'll likely lose all of her memories if the Animus win, she's genuinely unbothered by it.
  • The Chew Toy: Alternate between this and Girly Bruiser.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man: Receives one from Claire and Kate in Episode 6.
  • Girly Bruiser: Alternate between this and The Chew Toy.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Out of the four, Rachel initially clings the hardest to the vestiges of her old life after being reborn. Unfortunately, she gradually realizes she has no patience to indulge in the same things her friends enjoy and finds their inane chattering about dating and parties now only pisses her off.
  • Pretty in Mink: She even dons a fur coat in the final battle.
  • Really 700 Years Old: In the OVA.
  • Teacher/Student Romance: Averted. She unexpectedly becomes friends with Nick the English professor outside of school, but the thought of a relationship never crosses either of their minds. Unfortunately, Rachel's friends see the two together and assume she's having an affair with Nick.

Claire Forrest

Voiced by: Miyuki Sawashiro (Japanese), Kara Greenberg (English)

Rose Sheedy

Voiced by: Ayumi Tsuji (Japanese), Brittney Karbowski (English)

  • Back from the Dead
  • Cower Power: Her defining traits. It gets so bad that in Episode 13, it nearly gets Rachel killed.
  • Dramatic Irony: She is considered the most cowardly and childish of the group, yet at home she has the responsibility of looking after her younger siblings while her father's missing and her mother's hospitalized and does so as competently and thoughtfully as she can.
  • The Load: She tends to cower more than she fights. Later lampshaded by Rachel in the form of a "The Reason You Suck" Speech in Episode 13. Strangely averted in Episode 7 when a verbal bright slap from Rachel herself during a fight motivates a fallen Rose to rise back up and fight. Ultimately, she gets better.
  • Parental Abandonment: She seems to have taken it well with her father, despite that it resulted in her raising her siblings while their mother is in the hospital.
  • Really 700 Years Old: In the OVA.
  • Shrinking Violet

Lise Harriette Meyer

Voiced by: Misato Fukuen (Japanese), Taylor Hannah (English)
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/liseharriettemeyer.jpg

  • Back from the Dead
  • Driven to Suicide: Her death is covered up as this.
  • The Heart: She's what connected Kate, Rachel, Rose and Claire in the beginning. None of them were friends with each other, but they were all friends with Lise. Flashbacks reveal the girls died specifically because they were searching for Lise after she went missing, and suspected her boyfriend had something to do with it.

  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Paula repeatedly goes out of her way to protect Kate and shields her from punishment when the other members of Grace believe Kate isn't committed to her duties. Kate learns Paula was going above and beyond for her because Paula knew the whole time that Kate had been fighting for the Animus, and had been trying to ease her burden at school by ensuring Kate didn't have more to stress about. Even though Paula knows they can't be together and Kate will soon forget all about her, all Paula desired was for Kate to be happy. To that end, Kate acknowledges how valuable Paula's support had been to her, and chooses to spend her last day before losing her memories by being with Paula.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: She's the elected president of Grace, but never lords her position over other people and gives Kate nothing but positive support.
  • Muggle: Her family are members of Animus, though she herself is not.
  • Secret Secret-Keeper: It turns out that she already knew what was going on with Kate and the others, a fact she reveals in Episode 19.
