The Phantom Thieves of Hearts

    In General

    Makoto Niijima / Queen

Makoto Niijima

  • Action Girl: She is this by default.
  • Adaptational Badass: She was plenty badass in canon, but she is more so by being the Wild Card.
  • Birthday Episode: She gets one in chapter 10.
  • Blood Knight: Just like in the game, she has by far the most brutal fighting style among the Phantom Thieves. The fact that she has the wild card only accentuates this even more.
  • Butt-Monkey: Despite being The Leader she tends to get this status courtesy of Ren who loves to act as The Tease.
  • Chaste Hero: Leaning into the "flunk a test at love" aspect of her romance in the original game, Makoto here is rather oblivious to her own developing feelings with Ren, despite their rather blatant flirting and an increasing number of people picking up on their tension. Takemi had to spell it out for her blankly and even then she remains in denial, nor does she accept that she's also jealous when she realizes that Ren is close to Kasumi.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Downplayed. She's actually a rather good driver - of cars, that is. When it comes to a motorcycle, like Johanna, she has no idea how the controls work, as Ren discovers the hard way.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: "Ms. Beep Boop" and "Fist of the Phantom Star".
  • He Is Not My Boyfriend: When someone asks her if she and Ren are dating, she always reacts like this. Ren does the same too.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: She puts herself down for not being able to do more for her fellow students regarding Kamoshida’s behavior before she became a Phantom Thief. During Chapter 26, she puts herself down in terms of not thinking she is good-looking and being surprised that Ren would even agree to pretend to be her boyfriend, so she could help Eiko.
  • Innocent Innuendo: She lets out a lot of these when the Phantom Thieves fight against a Mara Slime. When Ren points this out to her, she doesn't understand what he means.
  • Love Epiphany: She finally realizes she is in love with Ren during Chapter 32.
  • Oblivious to Love: Similar to the source game, Makoto is rather oblivious to her own feelings. Takemi has to outright tell her that she has a crush on Ren.
  • Once Done, Never Forgotten: Played for Laughs. Early in the story, she tries to be stealthy by hiding her face behind a book and taking a peek every so often. This only happens once, but Ren and Morgana constantly remind her of this.
  • Only Friend: Eiko says in chapter 20 that Makoto is her only friend.
  • Ship Tease: Boy, do Makoto and Ren get loads of this! The first chapter of the fic states that they are dating by the time the interrogation with Sae is taking place.
  • Sweet Tooth: She has a fondness for sweets, as seen many times through the fic.
  • Undercover as Lovers: In Chapter 26, Makoto asks Ren to pretend to be her boyfriend so they can investigate Eiko’s shady boyfriend, and he accepted it.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Johanna's evolution into Anat came as a result of Makoto's rage after Kaneshiro seemingly kills Ren.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Constantly teased by Ren and she snaps back at him from time to time, but do anything to him and she'll make you regret it.

    Ren Amamiya / Joker

Ren Amamiya

  • Adaptational Badass: Not Joker himself, but Arsène. In the original game, Arsène was a cool-looking but ultimately weak Persona that stopped learning new moves early on and was all-but-guaranteed to be replaced later on (unless one empowered him using the various Velvet Room mechanics). Here, since Arsène is Joker's only Persona, he remains capable throughout the entire story and learns a much larger selection of moves, including more powerful Curse moves and a variety of status effects.
  • Adaptational Wimp: A given considering this story's entire premise is Makoto being the Wild Card and leader of the Phantom Thieves, so he's now the Number Two.
  • Affectionate Nickname: Ryuji calls him "RenRen". Whether he likes it or not is another story.
  • All the Other Reindeer: Ren grew up in a single-parent home due to his dad abandoning his mom after impregnating her. This led to Ren growing up getting bullied and ostracized due to this reflecting badly on his mother.
  • Because You Were Nice to Me: He tells Makoto that the reason he's friends with Ryuji is that he is the first one at Shujin who's ever treated him like a normal person.
  • Big Eater: There are a handful of scenes that involve Ren eating.
  • Casting a Shadow: He has a Curse affinity, as usual.
  • Chick Magnet: Despite not being the protagonist in this universe, he has still managed to win the affections of both Makoto and Yoshizawa.
  • Deadpan Snarker: One of the perks to no longer being the Silent Protagonist.
  • Disappeared Dad: He tells Sojiro that his father isn't with his mother anymore. He later tells Makoto that his father walked out on his mother after accidentally impregnating her.
  • Embarrassing Nickname: It seems to be a Running Gag:
    • "RenRen" by Ryuji.
    • "Renny" by Eiko.
    • "Clown Shoes" by Jose.
  • Extreme Doormat: Makoto's observation of Ren is that he has trouble turning down offers to help others, even when he's straining.
  • Food as Bribe: He is willing to go to Maruki's therapy sessions just because he offers free snacks.
  • Hero of Another Story: It's implied in several chapters and finally confirmed in Chapter 38 that a number of the supporting characters who Makoto didn't form Confidants with (like Takemi, Kawakami and Kasumi), Joker still forms a bond with and is going through their "confidants" off-screen.
  • Heroic Bastard: Ren grew up in a single-parent home and never knowing who his father was due to him walking out on Ren's mom. But despite his terrible reputation among the school due to his criminal record and Kamoshida spreading malicious rumors about him, he's a kind-hearted and thoughtful person.
  • Loving Bully: A Downplayed Trope, as while Ren has a habit of picking on and teasing Makoto, he never crosses into actually demeaning or harassing her.
  • Number Two: He has this position in the Phantom Thieves and takes care of aspects such as the medicine supply for heists.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: If Ren is not cracking up jokes every five seconds, it is telling that there is something serious happening at the moment.
  • Precision F-Strike: During the fight with Kamoshida's Shadow:
Ren: What's wrong, asshole? Cat got your tongue?
  • Sad Clown: It is implied he makes jokes as a coping mechanism due to how badly he was bullied in his childhood.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: When someone asks him if he and Makoto are dating, he always reacts like this. Makoto does the same too.
  • Ship Tease: With Makoto. A lot. The first chapter of the fic states that they are dating by the time the interrogation with Sae is taking place.
  • Shout-Out to Shakespeare: When finding the first will seed in Kamoshida's palace:
Ren: [with a dramatic tone] "Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him well!"
  • Stepford Smiler: Has to deal with the constant Malicious Slander that the students of Shujin Academy spread about him after Kamoshida leaked his record. When Makoto asks him if he is bothered by any of this, he simply tells her that it's fine, but Makoto is not fooled by this. Maruki even indirectly lampshades this when Ren goes to his first therapy session with him.
  • The Tease: Having fun at Makoto’s expense might as well be a pastime for him.
  • Trademark Favourite Food: Sojiro's curry. Honorable mentions go to Big Bang Burger and Shujin's Yakisoba Pan.
  • Think Unsexy Thoughts: When he gets stuck in a rather... pressing situation with Makoto while riding a crammed train (with Makoto pointing out that something in his front pocket is poking her) his first thought is to think of Sojiro, which backfires completely as he thinks of Sojiro's "Hoo Boy!".
  • Truth in Television: The expansion of Ren's backstory revealing that he comes from a single-parent home and ended up getting ostracized and bullied in his hometown even before his false criminal charges. In Japan, there is an issue with both single mothers and their children facing prejudice due to their home status.
  • Undercover as Lovers: In Chapter 26, he agrees to be Makoto’s fake boyfriend and help her investigate Eiko’s boyfriend.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Has this dynamic with Makoto. He likes teasing her, but will not hesitate to protect her if she is in danger.

    Morgana / Mona

Morgana

  • Abhorrent Admirer: Deconstructed. Makoto warns Morgana not to put Ann too much on a pedestal because her experiences with Kamoshida were a strain on her.
  • Beauty Equals Goodness: When the Phantom Thieves discuss Ann becoming a potential ally, he immediately approves of the idea by saying that someone as pretty as her can't be bad.
  • Deadpan Snarker: While all of the Phantom Thieves have their moments, Morgana is more prone to this than anyone else.
  • The Dulcinea Effect: The mere fact that he is attracted to Ann is proof enough for him that she has good intentions and would make a perfect addition to the team.
  • Food as Bribe: Makoto gets him to stop insulting Ryuji by telling him that he'll get no sushi if he keeps it up.
  • I Am Not Weasel: "I am not a cat!"
  • Jerkass to One: To Ryuji, ever since they met. Makoto constantly tells him to be nicer to him.
  • Love at First Sight: How he falls for Ann.
  • Trademark Favourite Food: Sushi.

    Ryuji Sakamoto / Skull

Ryuji Sakamoto

  • Childhood Friends: He and Ann went to middle-school together, and he was, alongside Shiho, one of her only friends. He even dyed his hair blond partly to make Ann feel less lonely. Though they drifted apart in high school, they quickly resume their friendship once Ann joins the Thieves.
  • No Indoor Voice: Has a tendency of talking out loud, which almost got Makoto in trouble with Tachibana once. Thankfully for him, Tachibana is a huge supporter of the Phantom Thieves.
  • Only Sane Man: When you compare him to either Makoto, Ren, Morgana, Yusuke, or Ann, he comes off as pretty normal.
  • Shipper on Deck: For Ren and Makoto.
  • Ship Tease: With Ann.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Let's just say that walking into Kamoshida's Palace by himself when he still hadn't awakened his Persona was not the smartest move he could've made.

    Yusuke Kitagawa / Fox

Yusuke Kitagawa

  • But for Me, It Was Tuesday: When he first enters the Metaverse, he recognizes Makoto and Ren in their metaverse outfits, but he doesn't remember who Ryuji is.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He actually believed that Makoto's "stealth technique" would work when Ren told him about it.
  • It's Not Porn, It's Art: When he asks Makoto to be his muse again, he asks her to pose nude for him. Makoto obviously refuses. He asks the same thing to Ann later on, who he just met at the time!
  • Momma's Boy: Positive portrayal. While he doesn't remember much from her, it's clear that his late mother means a lot to him.
  • Parental Abandonment: His father died before he was born, and Madarame let his mother die of a seizure.
  • Starving Artist: It should say something when he mentions not being able to afford a manga.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: In some occasions, he can appear out of the blue behind other characters and just casually join a conversation.
  • That Came Out Wrong: When asking Makoto to model nude for him:
Yusuke: "Yes! Exactly! A sight like that will be truly stimulating"
Ryuji: "I know you mean that in an artsy way, but dude, phrasing."

    Ann Takamaki / Panther

Ann Takamaki

  • Bad "Bad Acting": The only one who finds it convincing is Yusuke.
  • Dragon with an Agenda: She agreed to help the principal investigate the Phantom Thieves only because she wanted to personally meet them.
  • Dramatic Irony: She falls for the rumors about Makoto covering up Kamoshida's crimes when in reality, she stopped them.
  • Failed a Spot Check: She apparently didn't realize that her outfit had changed when she first awakened to her Persona's powers.
  • Heroic Seductress: She is able to distract the demons in the Metaverse with her looks.
  • Jerkass Realization: When Shiho tells her that Makoto is her friend and that she truly cares about the well-being of others.
  • Letting Her Hair Down: While walking around the festival in Ren's hometown with Ryuji. She's upset that he doesn't notice at first.
  • Ship Tease: With Ryuji.
  • Shipper on Deck: She becomes a shipper for Ren and Makoto shortly after joining the Phantom Thieves. She outright tells Makoto she should get together with Ren.
  • Swapped Roles: Due to Ann being Locked Out of the Loop during the Kamoshida arc, she ends up taking Makoto's role from the game of being the one pressured by Kobayakawa into "investigating" the Thieves.
  • Sweet Tooth: As per usual, Ann loves sweets, especially crepes.
  • Tears of Remorse: Ann absolutely cries her heart out when Makoto reveals herself as a Phantom Thief and she apologizes to her.

    Futaba Sakura / Oracle

Futaba Sakura

    Haru Okumura / Noir

Haru Okumura

Confidants

    In General

    Igor (The Hunger)

Igor

  • Foreshadowing: Is represented by the same Arcana as Adachi, referencing the fact that this "Igor" is actually Yaldabaoth, the being responsible for most of the conflict of the story.

Eiko Takao (The Faith) / Witch

Eiko Takao

A third year at Shujin Academy that Makoto ends up befriending by chance due to their mutual love for Buchi.—-

  • Ascended Extra: She only appeared in Makoto's Social Link in the original game. Here she is a more fleshed-out character and is the Faith Confidant and is involved during the Kaneshiro arc. She even awakens to her persona Joan of Arc in Chapter 76 once she confronts Shadow Tsukasa, donning a witch outfit.
  • Adaptational Nice Guy: Compared to her appearance in Makoto's Social Link in the game, Eiko is much nicer in this story.
  • Friendless Background: Eiko had no friends before meeting Makoto.
  • Irony: Her codename is Witch and her image of a rebel makes her take the appearance of a witch. Her persona Joan of Arc in real-life was accused of being a witch and burnt at the stake for it.
  • Light 'em Up: Joan of Arc uses Bless attacks when fighting against Shadow Tsukasa.
  • Shipper on Deck: To say that she thinks that Makoto and Ren make a cute couple would be putting it lightly.
  • The Unfavorite: She's ignored by her parents in favor of her smarter younger brother Aiko, something that contributes to her easily falling for Tsukasa's charms.
  • Tarot Motifs: She is the Faith Confidant. In particular, she represents the reverse Faith, which is blind faith in someone who doesn't deserve it, alluding to how she puts faith in Tsukasa, who is exploiting her.

    Chiaki Yasui (The Tower)

Chiaki Yasui

The vice-president of the student council of Shujin Academy.
  • Host Club: Chiaki works at a hostess club because it pays well and gets dodgy over why she needs the money so badly.
  • Promoted to Parent: She mentions having three younger siblings and is strangely desperate to get more money.
  • Raised by Grandparents: She and her siblings live with their grandparents.
  • Stealing from the Till: She ends up stealing money raised for the clubs and later buys surplus uniforms and swimsuits to resell in desperation for money.
  • Sugar-and-Ice Personality: While she can come off as hostile towards Makoto, it is clear that she respects her deep-down. Makoto discovers a lot of her hostility comes from her difficulties trusting people due to her grandparents' gullibility trapping the family in massive debt.
  • Work Off the Debt: Her grandparents have been left in debt because of being constantly scammed and then extorted by a Loan Shark, which has forced Chiaki into desperate measures to pay it off.

    Shiho Suzui (The Sun)

Shiho Suzui

  • The Ace: Downplayed. She is known as the star player of the volleyball team and people acknowledge her skills, but Kamoshida being who he is made it difficult for Shiho to shine.
  • Ascended Extra: Shiho pretty much disappeared from the main story after the Kamoshida Arc and transfers away in the original game. Here she is the Sun Confidant, dedicating a side plot concerning her recovery from the aftermath of her assault and suicide attempt.
  • Driven to Suicide: Just like in the game, Kamoshida raping her out of spite that Ann refused to sleep with him leads her to jump off the school's rooftop in a desperate attempt to get away from him. Fortunately, she survives and is recovering at the hospital, setting up her Confidant with Makoto.
  • He's a Friend: This is how she gets Ann to stop accusing Makoto of covering up Kamoshida's crimes. That and the fact that Shiho also tells Ann that Kamoshida also tried to sexually assault Makoto.
  • Nice Girl: A total sweetheart.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: While the Phantom Thieves were already disgusted with Kamoshida, they see him beyond redemption after his Shadow casually reveals that he raped Shiho after Ann refused to have sex with him.

    Takayo Tachibana (The Moon)

Takayo Tachibana

  • Accidental Misnaming: When she first meets Mishima, she calls him "Nishima".
  • Alliterative Name: Takayo Tachibana.
  • Ascended Extra: Her role was nonexistent in the original game, not to mention that she was unnamed. Here she has a more prominent role and is the Moon Confidant.
  • Awesomeness by Analysis: She figures out Makoto's identity as a Phantom Thief because of her position as the Student Council President, allowing her to enter Shujin sooner and thus post the calling card to Kamoshida, and for the time she's been spending with Ren and Ryuji. The definitive proof of it being Ryuji asking Makoto on the phone about their next Phantom Thieves meeting rather loudly. Fortunately, she is on the side of the Phantom Thieves.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When she discovers that Makoto is the leader of the Phantom Thieves, it looks like she is going to use that information for blackmail or something even worse... only to reveal seconds later that she is a huge supporter of the Phantom Thieves.
  • Foil: To Mishima: Both of them are huge supporters of the Phantom Thieves and help them in different ways. However, while Mishima is an Extreme Doormat and The Friend Nobody Likes, Takayo is very confident in her journalist skills and seems to have a rather good reputation.
  • Genki Girl: She gets really excited when talking about Phantom Thieves or her skills as a journalist.
  • Hero-Worshipper: She says this is the reason why she supports the Phantom Thieves
  • Knowledge Broker: She is the girl that provides the Phantom Thieves with information of their targets.
  • Named by the Adaptation: Her name was not given in the original game.
  • Secret-Keeper: She knows who the Phantom Thieves are, and promises not to tell anyone.

    Sojiro Sakura (The Hierophant)

Sojiro Sakura

    Naoya Makigami (The Temperance)

Naoya Makigami

A student attending Kosei High School and a kendo practitioner.

  • Ascended Extra: In the games, he's an NPC that gives you an optional side mission. In this story, he's the Temperance Confidant and plays a small but critical role introducing the Phantom Thieves to Yusuke during the Madarame arc.

    Hifumi Togo (The Star)

Hifumi Togo

    Mitsuhide Matsuoka (The Devil)

Mitsuhide Matsuoka

A police officer who's introduced rescuing Makoto in the aftermath of the runaway train incident. He once worked alongside Makoto and Sae's late father.

  • The Alcoholic: Mitsuhide is often found at the Crossroads.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: He's first seen in the story as the police officer who saves Makoto from the runaway train and appears again being one of the officers investigating Iwai before being properly introduced in the Kaneshiro arc as the Devil Confidant.
  • The Lost Lenore: He admits to once having a partner he loved who had a strong sense of justice and her death is heavily implied to have contributed to his present day cynicism.
  • Original Character: Neither Mitsuhide nor his partner Kanetake have direct counterparts in either the game or its Animated Adaptation.
  • To Be Lawful or Good: Discussed. He tells Makoto how the politicians and police turn the other way to sex crimes and Yakuza because it's more pragmatic to keep the crime rate low for public image and in a later conversation comments how being a police officer is more keeping peace rather than keeping justice. Despite what he tells Makoto, it's apparent he's not happy about it.

    Caroline and Justine (The Strength)

Caroline and Justine

  • Not So Above It All: While they're giving Makoto their request for a Jack Frost, Makoto gets them sidetracked by mentioning its In-Universe merchandise. This leads the twins to ask Makoto to bring them some, which then leads to bringing the twins with her into the real world. Makoto later catches them having a tea party with the Jack Frost plushie she got them, which they hastily cover up.
  • Tsundere: A platonic example. When Makoto takes them to the church, Justine tells her that Caroline has been looking forward to the next time Makoto visits them, to her embarrassment. Caroline then fires back that Justine feels the same way, which she tries to deny.

    Sae Niijima (The Judgement)

Sae Niijima

  • Adaptational Jerkass: Justified and later subverted; she feels genuinely betrayed by her sister being a criminal in seeming spite of their father, and it leads her being far more aggressive when interrogating her. She calms down and becomes more professional when she discovers the reason her sister became a Phantom Thief was the fact that Kamoshida nearly raped her, and Makoto felt like she had nobody to turn to.
  • All the Other Reindeer: Chapter 4 reveals that Sae is disliked by most of her coworkers, simply for being a woman, some of them see her as a nuisance and others as an object of lust.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: It's quite clear she is not taking her sister being the Phantom Thieves' leader very well, leading her to be a lot more hostile an interrogator than in canon. She calms down after realizing how sympathetic Makoto's reasoning was.
  • Forgotten Birthday: In chapter 10 she completely forgets that it's Makoto's birthday.
  • Former Teen Rebel: in chapter 25, she mentions to Akechi that she used to be this when she was younger.
  • I Have No Son!: When the interrogation starts, Sae tells Makoto that she has lost any right to call her her sister. She takes it back in chapter 12 after learning that Kamoshida had tried to rape Makoto.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: As strict as she can be Sae truly cares about Makoto, and she shows it by giving her presents for doing well at her exams and expressing concern for her safety in numerous occasions.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Makoto apparently never told Sae that she started dating Ren, which is why Sae needs several seconds to register it when Makoto makes an off-hand comment about her having a boyfriend during the interrogation.
  • My Beloved Smother: Well, the closest thing Makoto has to a mother anyways. Sae is very strict towards Makoto and is always telling her to study in spite of her excellent grades. Even when she is out having fun with her friends, Sae still tells her to go to study (Although that one can be somewhat justified since Sae forgot that it was Makoto's birthday).
  • Pet the Dog: As harsh as she can be some times, she also does plenty of good things for Makoto, such as letting her keep Morgana and giving her extra money as a way of apologizing for forgetting about her birthday. Not to mention that she is very concerned about Makoto when she hears the news that the train she was in crashed at the beginning of the story, and later on when she learns that the principal was blackmailing her into doing his dirty work and that Kamoshida attempted to rape her.
  • Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil: She goes softer with Makoto during the interrogation after learning that Kamoshida tried to sexually assault her, even as far to take back what she said about Makoto losing any right to call her a sister.
  • When You Coming Home, Dad?: Sae's job keeps her too busy to spend time with Makoto, it gets to the point where her texting her sister about how she is going to have dinner with some colleagues at work has become pretty common for Makoto.

    Takuto Maruki (The Councillor)

Takuto Maruki

    Kasumi Yoshizawa (The Priestess)

Kasumi Yoshizawa

  • Clingy Jealous Girl: A Downplayed Trope but in Chapter 32 during the Hawaii trip, when Kasumi picks up on the fact that Ren is on First-Name Basis with Makoto and doesn't use any honorifics to address her, Kasumi asks Ren to do the same with her.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Kasumi winds up forming a friendship with Ren and asks him to help her train to get out of her gymnastics funk.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Chapter 50 displays Kasumi as being this towards Ren. Following the revelations of Futaba's Will Seeds, Ren is clearly stressed out upon returning to the real world. When Kasumi detects this though she tries to get him to talk to her about it and when he finally begins to open up about his mom Kasumi instead encourages him to bottle up those feelings.
  • It's All About Me: When Ren starts to open up about the baggage he's going through with his mom, Kasumi unintentionally blows off the conversation by mentioning that none of it matters as long as the two of them can be together.
  • Ship Tease: Downplayed, but not long after Kasumi asks from the above situation, Ryuji starts to read more into the situation and infers that Ren is now juggling between two choices of Kasumi and Makoto.

    Yohei Kiritani (The Death)

Yohei Kiritani

  • Ascended Extra: Downplayed. He was a prominent Memento's target in the original source material. Here, he becomes Makoto's Death Confidant after she takes in interest in Yohei's fighting skills.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: He makes short work of Kaneshiro's subordinates when they try to attack Makoto for Revenge by Proxy.
  • Jekyll & Hyde: Like with the original source material, where he's a normal homeless man by day and ruthless ex-mercenary by night. In this case, Makoto makes the confidant with his Hyde personality, who outright tells her he's only available at night.
  • Tarot Motifs: He is the Death Confidant, a card representing endings and transformations, but in reverse can mean resistence to change and inner purging. The latter meanings aptly describes Yohei's Jekyll & Hyde situation.

Antagonists

Major Targets

    Suguru Kamoshida

Suguru Kamoshida

Shujin Academy's P.E. teacher and a former Olympic athlete. He thoroughly abuses the students under his care, making them go through Training from Hell just to increase his standing and for his own amusement.

    Ichiryuusai Madarame

Ichiryuusai Madarame

A famous Japanese painter who adopted Yusuke Kitagawa when Yusuke's parents died. He has been claiming both Yusuke's and his other disciples' work as his own, propping up his own fame at the cost of his students'. His unwillingness to create his own work and his desire for fame creates a Palace inside the collective unconscious where he fancies himself as a shogun presiding a gaudy golden museum of his ego.

    Principal Kobayakawa

Principal Kobayakawa

The principal of Shujin Academy, Kobayakawa is a morbidly obese man who puts the school's reputation above the well-being of his own students, looking the other way in the face of Kamoshida's abuses because the volleyball team's performance has improved the school's standing.
  • Adaptational Villainy: He was already bad in canon due to, it's implied, sweeping Kamoshida's abuses under the rug, this story has him explicitly worse as he has a Palace.
  • Fat Bastard: He's perfectly willing to allow Kamoshida to physically and sexually abuse the students he's supposed to be helping, even if it drives them to suicide to keep his school's reputation afloat.

    Junya Kaneshiro

Junya Kaneshiro

A mafia boss responsible for blackmailing and extorting high school students.
  • Adaptational Job Change: Downplayed. While he is a crime boss in both the original game and Queen's Checkmate, in the original he leads a Hangurenote , while in the latter, he is leading a Yakuza.
  • It's Personal: Once it's revealed that he arranged for Detective Nijima's death.
  • You Killed My Father: It's revealed that he's responsible for orchestrating the death of Makoto's father.

Other Characters

    Sadayo Kawakami

Sadayo Kawakami

  • Demoted to Extra: Due to a combination of no longer being the Temperance Confidant as well as not being Makoto's homeroom teacher, Kawakami's significance to the plot has reduced.
  • In Spite of a Nail: It's implied in a conversation with Makoto that Ren still participates in the maid order event with Ryuji and Mishima, and found out about Kawakami's night job.
  • Verbal Backspace: Kawakami started stammering and choking on herself when Makoto mentions that she feels like that the school staff is treating her like a maid.

    Tae Takemi

Tae Takemi

  • Demoted to Extra: Unlike the game, Tae is not the Death Confidant. In fact, Makoto is not formally introduced to her until over 20 chapters again.
  • In Spite of a Nail: During her first appearance it's implied that Joker still followed through on his own to become a test subject for her medicine in order to supply the Thieves with the medicine they can use in the metaverse.
  • Shipper on Deck: Quickly becomes one of Makoto and Ren.
  • Troll: During a visit to Takemi's clinic, because Makoto thought she was coming down with a fever, Takemi spells out that Makoto's symptoms are pretty blatantly caused by her infatuation with Ren. To further mess with Makoto, Takemi tells her the only thing she can prescribe to her to help are contraceptives.

    Chihaya Mifune

Chihaya Mifune

  • Demoted to Extra: She's not the Fortune Confidant and doesn't appear for a big portion of this fic. It isn't until Chapter 76 when Makoto meets her for the first time.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Judging from the way she refers to someone who bought a "Holy Stone" as a fool, she still managed to sell her "Holy Stone" to Ren.
