Yakumo Saitou
Voiced by: Daisuke Ono (TV series & drama CD)
- Adaptational Jerkass: in the Anime, Yakumo does not waive Haruka's bill, does not tell her she can come by any time she likes, and does not ask her to call him by his first name as he does in the other versions. It gives off a much colder first impression.
- Always Save the Girl: No matter how much he may complain about her, if Haruka is in trouble he will do the impossible to save her. Always, no exceptions.
- Amateur Sleuth: Despite working with the local police department pretty often, he's ultimately just a civilian, and a younger one at that.
- Big Brother Instinct: to his younger cousin, Nao.
- Brilliant, but Lazy: Apart from his ability to see ghosts, he's also so smart that he's capable of Sherlock Scan level deductions. However, he spends most of his time sleeping in a sleeping bag in the club room or swindling random students and teachers out of their money.
- Child by Rape: His mother got pregnant with him after being raped. That's one of the reasons why he doesn't consider said rapist to be his father.
- Curtains Match the Window: When he's wearing his contact lens to cover up his left red eye.
- Dark and Troubled Past: His past is dark and troubled from the very beginning, although it did get better with time.
- Defrosting Ice King: He starts to defrost thanks to Haruka.
- Freakiness Shame: Prior to meeting Haruka, everyone who'd seen his red eye remarked on how disgusting it was or were afraid of it, to the point that Yakumo was ostracized for it. This is the reason why he wears the color contact on that eye alone.
- Hidden Heart of Gold: Regardless of his gruff and snarky personality, it's easy to see that he still cares about doing the right thing and protecting what few friends he has.
- Intergenerational Friendship: With Gotou. When Haruka first sees them talking to each other, in the novels, she thinks that they look more like old friends than an university student and a police officer.
- I See Dead People: The premise of the series is that his Magical Eye can see ghosts, helping him to solve crimes that involve ghosts.
- Knight in Sour Armor: He's seen a lot in his time helping the police with crimes, and between constantly seeing unhappy dead people and seeing everyone he loves come to an unfortunate end, he's understandably somewhat bitter and brooding about the world around him.
- Limited Wardrobe: In all continuities. He wears the same white button down shirt and jeans in almost every single chapter.
- Magical Eye: One of his eyes is a normal brown; the other is red and slit-pupiled (in the anime), an indicator of his ability to see ghosts.
- Mysterious Past: By virtue of his tendency to keep his troubles to himself.
- Nephewism: After his mother attempted to strangle him, his kind priest uncle Issun took him in and did his best to raise Yakumo.
- Parental Abandonment: His mother disappeared after attempting to strangle him and his father's whereabouts are unknown, but in the anime, his father turns out to be the antagonist of the series.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: Most people are either disgusted or frightened by his red eye. Except for some weirdo who said it looked pretty.
- Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: with Haruka.
- The Slacker: Sleeps all day long and is always found with bed hair and a tired expression.
- Tall, Dark, and Handsome: He is a tall, dark-haired man who is both incredibly handsome and and snarky.
- Troubled, but Cute: Regardless of his past and his acerbic personality, Yakumo is still a handsome young man.
- Tsundere: Justified; the people he loves and cares about are systematically murdered or otherwise removed from his life by his biological father, so he has a lot of issues with showing attachment or affection to people who aren't his Cool Uncle or his younger cousin Nao.
Haruka Ozawa
Voiced by: Ayumi Fujimura (TV series), Aya Hirano (drama CD)
- Adaptation Dye-Job: In both manga adaptations and the novels, Haruka has matching brown hair and eyes. In the anime adaptation, she has pink hair and light purple eyes. Her hairstyle also varies between adaptations.
- Ahoge: Has one in the Anime
- Always Identical Twins: Averted; Yakumo comments on how Haruka and Ayaka have different faces, despite being twins.
- Angsty Surviving Twin: With a bit of Survivor Guilt and Death Seeker.
- Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl: Has shades of this with Yakumo, in that her sincere concern for him is what helps him defrost.
- Boyish Short Hair: She got bullied for this when she was little, so Ayaka often had to defend her.
- Curtains Match the Window: In the Ritsu/Suzuka mangas and novels.
- Cute Clumsy Girl: Haruka is constantly tripping over something, and it can lead to serious trouble.
- The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: When young she felt inferior to her sister, as Ayaka was better at studying, sports and was a musical prodigy.
- Limited Wardrobe: In the anime. It stands out, painfully. Averted in both manga series.
- Naïve Everygirl: Before meeting Yakumo, she has absolutely no contact with ghosts and crime investigations.
- Nice Girl: Yakumo points out that she gets very nosy and attached to people, and gets tangled up in their problems as a result.
- Ordinary High-School Student: College Student, in this case. While Haruka does her best to help Yakumo, the police, and any ghosts she stumbles upon, she's still ultimately a normal human girl who cannot see ghosts.
- Plucky Girl: Despite carrying the Idiot Ball at times, in a pinch, she'll do what she can to defend herself and keep the people she cares about from getting hurt.
- Psychologist Teacher: When she starts working as an intern in an elementary school.
- Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: with Yakumo.
- Stepford Smiler: The kindhearted Cute Clumsy Girl actually suffers from Survivor Guilt stemming from the death of her twin sister, Ayaka, to the point of being a Death Seeker.
- Strong Family Resemblance: in the anime Haruka's mother looks like a middle-aged version of her.
- Talking the Monster to Death: Haruka's kindness and optimism has allowed her to do this across multiple continuities. For example, in the Ritsu manga, she manages to talk down a woman holding her at knife point to the point that the other party allows the police to arrest them.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: Haruka and Ayaka were like this as children; Haruka had short hair and would wear more boyish outfits, while Ayaka had longer hair and wore more dresses and skirts.
- The Watson: She plays this role to Yakumo across all works, though will in some continuities split this job with Gotou and Ishii.
- Wide-Eyed Idealist: Tends to see the good in everything and everyone, even when it's to her detriment.
Kazutoshi Gotou
Voiced by: Hiroki Tochi (TV series & drama CD)
- The Big Guy
- Fire-Forged Friends: The only reason why Yakumo and Gotou work together is to use each other's assets (Yakumo's ability to see ghosts and Gotou's information as a police detective). Or at least that's what they both say to anybody who asks.
- Friend on the Force
- Happily Married: Subverted. He and his wife, Atsuko, have some problems, as she leaves their house periodically. But in Gotou's monologue we learn that in crucial times she is always there to support him and apparently he even fell in love at first sight with her.
- Intergenerational Friendship: With Yakumo. When Haruka first sees them talking to each other, in the novels, she thinks that they look more like old friends than an university student and a police officer.
- Love at First Sight: He says that he can't remember the first time he saw his wife, but he remembers the clothes she was wearing, her hairstyle, and thinking "I'm definitely going to marry this woman."
- Running Gag: Yakumo asking him if his wife has left him again and people reminding him not to smoke.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Ishii and Gotou.
- Shipper on Deck: For Yakumo/Haruka, although he often advises Haruka to "dump" Yakumo.
- Smoking Is Cool
Yuutarou Ishii
Voiced by: Tokuyoshi Kawashima
- Cowardly Sidekick
- Heroic BSoD: Goes through one when Gotou is captured in episode 8, but Haruka and Makoto manage to snap him back to his senses.
- Hero-Worshipper: Ishii idolizes Gotou. His reason for is was because he thought Gotou was a psychic detective, and Ishii turns out to be a fan of the occult.
- The Klutz
- Lovable Coward
- Love at First Sight: A bit smitten with Haruka. Unfortunately, Haruka is very much in love with Yakumo.
- Oblivious to Love: He is clueless as to why Makoto keeps visiting him and trying to keep in contact with him.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Ishii and Gotou.
Makoto Hijikata
Voiced by: Megumi Toyoguchi
- All Love Is Unrequited: She falls for Isshi.
- Intrepid Reporter
- Never a Self-Made Woman: She got her job solely thanks to her father's connections. She isn't happy about that.
- Nice Girl
Isshin Saitou
Voiced by: Toshihiko Seki (TV series), Ken Narita (drama CD)
- Cool Uncle: Isshin mostly lets Yakumo do his own thing, but whenever Yakumo comes back, Isshun is there to support him. He's also very understanding of his nephew's condition, and even wears a red contact so that he can understand some of the suffering his nephew has gone through.
- Good Shepherd: Isshin is a priest, and a very kindly one at that.
- Nice Guy: Isshun is gentle, well mannered, and kind, to the point that when he's injured in an attempt to break Yakumo, almost the entire cast is either investigating the situation or doing their best to help where they can.
- Parental Substitute: To Yakumo; after Yakumo's mother tries to strangle him and disappears, Isshun took Yakumo in, and raised him as his own. It's to the point that Yakumo refuses to acknowledge his biological father (who raped his mother and sired him), since Isshun was more of a father to him than his biological father ever was.
Nao Saitou
Voiced by: Ami Koshimizu
- Cheerful Child: Despite her disability, Nao is still a very chipper little girl.
- Disability Superpower: She is deaf, so she has telepathic powers to make up for it.
- Morality Pet: Her older cousin, Yakumo, is sweet and gentle with her.
- Telepathy: She communicates with people by thinking her responses at them, and can hear them when they directly think at her.
