    The Silver Ravens
The heroes of the adventure path, who band together to free Kintargo from Barzillai Thrune's iron grip.
  • Ambadassador: After taking their city back, they become responsible for uniting the surrounding regions to form the new nation of Ravounel, as well as negotiating a peace treaty with Cheliax.
  • Hope Bringer: Most Kintargans are upset with Barzillai's rule, but are too afraid to resist until the Silver Ravens prove that it's possible.
  • La Résistance: Upon taking up the mantle of the Silver Ravens, they quickly become the backbone of the revolution.
  • Legacy Character: They are the second group to use the name in Kintargo, styling themselves after a band of renowned heroes who fought House Thrune over a hundred years prior to the start of the adventure path. They also meet Jackdaw, the founder of the original Silver Ravens, who is still alive by virtue of being an elf.
  • Music for Courage: The Song of Silver a bardic masterpiece powerful enough to enchant the entire city with magic that makes it hostile to infernal creatures for a whole week, as well as granting useful boons to the Silver Ravens during that time.
  • Spark of the Rebellion: The protest which kicks off the adventure path (and Barzillai Thrune's heavy-handed response to it) bring the player characters together.

    Barzillai Thrune

Paracount Barzillai Thrune

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/barzillai_thrune.jpg
Race: Human (Chelaxian)/Bone devil
Class: Inquisitor of Asmodeus
Alignment: Lawful Evil

High Inquisitor Paracount Lord-Mayor Barzillai Thrune is a Chelish Inquisitor and appointed Lord-Mayor of Kintargo.

  • Abusive Mom: Barzillai's mother frequently whipped him, and played a large role in his becoming the man he his today.
  • Ambition Is Evil: He aims to outdo the rest of his family by becoming the land of Cheliax itself.
  • And I Must Scream: His final fate. After his bone devil form is destroyed, his soul becomes a damned petitioner, stripped of all his memories and senses to languish in anonymous oblivion, the very thing he was most afraid of.
  • Archenemy: To the party. No other villain in the Adventure Path harasses the players and their allies like Barzillai does.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: In addition to cracking down on political dissent and non-diabolical religions, he also outlaws mint and having tea after dark.
  • Back from the Dead: Killed at the conclusion of the fourth part of the Adventure Path, he returns as a devil at the end of the sixth part to menace the party once again.
  • Bad People Abuse Animals: In a vision in Hell, a young Barzillai is seen vivisecting a cat in front of his weeping sister. Also, his two proclamations mentioned under Bait the Dog.
  • Bait the Dog: Both of his nicer proclamations turn out to be this. His payment for pest corpses ends up being rescinded when too many poor people turn amateur rat catcher, and payment for giving the dottari feral dogs to train is really for a new type of execution.
  • Big Bad: As the tyrannical new Lord-Mayor of Kintargo, he's the overarching villain of the Hell's Rebels Adventure Path.
  • Brother–Sister Incest: He's revealed to have had an unhealthy obsession with his younger sister.
  • Church Militant: As an Inquisitor within the Church of Asmodeus, this comes with the job description.
  • Deal with the Devil: He made one with Mephistopheles, in a complex ritual to bind his life essence to all of Cheliax and become a Genius Loci.
  • Devil Of Human Origin: Already was the case for most devils, but Barzillai's transformation is extremely fast; while he gets killed in part four of the path, his will was so strong plus being able to leverage a contract with Mephistopheles that his lemure form retained his memories and intellect, and he was able to quickly evolve into a much stronger bone devil.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Subverted. It seems to be the case when he is killed in the fourth part of the story with two more books to go, but as it turns out his soul retained his intelligence and he returns as a bone devil.
  • The Dragon: Becomes one to Mephistopheles after his death.
  • The Family That Slays Together: All the Thrunes are bad news. His cousin Abrogail II is the autocratic ruler of Cheliax, another cousin, Druvalia, is Big Bad of the Skull & Shackles campaign, Druvalia's mother is a rapist... the list goes on.
  • Freudian Excuse: Barzillai's upbringing at the hands of an abusive mother did nothing for his outlook on life.
  • The Fundamentalist: The rest of the Thrune family views Barzillai as a religious fanatic and treats him with disdain as a result.
  • Genius Loci: Barzillai's ultimate goal is to become Cheliax itself, and in the last installment of the adventure path he makes a fair bid for subsuming Ravounel.
  • He-Man Woman Hater: Being abused by his mother, shunned by his sister, and intimidated by his cousin the queen, he turned his fear of women and intimacy into a hatred that inspired much of his evil.
  • Incest-ant Admirer: Barzillai is obsessed with his younger sister, who for her part wants nothing to do with him.
  • Mayor Pain: A particularly extreme version who is prepared to annihilate the city he rules.
  • Nepotism: Got his position thanks to the patronage of Abrogail II, who is his cousin. Though this was at least in part to get him out of the court and away from her.
  • One-Winged Angel: Because of his contract with Mephistopheles and his attempt to make himself a Genius Loci, Barzillai's soul retained all of his mortal memories and powers when he was transformed into a bone devil, even gaining some mythic power on top of that. The resulting mythic devil is far stronger than Barzillai ever was as a human, and it is in this form that the PCs must face him in order to stop his plan.
  • Sadist: Repeatedly described as one. Barzillai is an exceptionally cruel and vicious man, even by the horrific standards of Chelish nobility. All of his many insecurities and neuroses drive him to feel better by inflicting all kinds of violence and misery on other people.
  • Sinister Minister: Even by the standards of his Religion of Evil, Barzillai is a bad one, willing to sacrifice anyone and everything in pursuit of his own personal glory.
  • Spear Counterpart: To Druvalia Thrune of Skull & Shackles. Both are Big Bads of the Adventure Path they appear in, both hail from lesser branches of the Thrune family, both seek to advance their position vis-a-vis the rest of the family, both cut deals with archdevils to do so, both are inquisitors, etc, etc.
  • Tin Tyrant: In his spiked armour.
  • Tyrant Takes the Helm: The event that kicks off the whole campaign is Barzillai and his allies taking over Kintargo from its previous (and considerably more benevolent) leadership.
  • Try to Fit That on a Business Card: His full title is "High Inquisitor Paracount Lord-Mayor Barzillai Thrune", not as long as his cousin'snote , but still a mouthful.
  • Unperson: Barzillai's greatest fear is that he will be redacted from Thrune family history and forgotten, a worry that his string of personal failures and his inability to sire children has only fueled.
  • Villainous Widow's Peak: As you can see in the picture above, Barzillai has one; This feature also survives his transformation into a devil.
  • Xanatos Gambit: His scheme is at the center of one. Mephistopheles supported his plan, knowing that either Barzillai would succeed and enforce Hell's tyranny over the land for all time, or he would be defeated and Ravounel's declaration of independence would keep Cheliax from growing complacent in their power, inspiring them to tighten their grip on their remaining holdings.

    Rexus

Rexus Victocora

Race: Human
Class: Aristocrat / Sorcerer
Alignment: Neutral Good

  • Because Destiny Says So: As a Destined Sorcerer, his magical bloodline derives its power from events to come.
  • Break the Cutie: He undergoes this process in the first adventure, as his loving and supportive noble parents are killed by Asmodean redactors.
  • The Chooser of the One: Approaches the heroes after seeing them stand up against Barzillai's tyranny, which leads to the rise of the new Silver Ravens.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: After being informed of his parents' death, he can go this way without player support, eventually trying to assassinate Barzillai.
  • Wide-Eyed Idealist: Definitely. He dreams of a world where his noble privilege is shared by all, and seeks a completely bloodless revolution.

    Laria

Laria Longroad

Race: Halfling
Class: Brawler / Rogue
Alignment: Chaotic Good

  • The Spymaster: Given her long history coordinating operations for the Bellflower Network, it's safe to say Laria is this. She can also become the literal Spymaster in the game's Rebellion subsystem!
  • Underground Railroad: Part of the Bellflower Network, who help halfling slaves escape Cheliax.

    Nox

Nox

Race: Devil-bound human/Broken soul
Class: Fighter
Alignment: Lawful Evil

  • Body Horror: By the time the players see her again after their first encounter, she has a major case of this; Her armor was wired to her body, her limbs were broken and made to heal at unnatural angles and a metal plate was bolted to her jaw which prevents her from speaking or eating (she was given a ring of sustenance to deal with the latter problem).
  • The Brute: As Barzillai Thrune's bodyguard and lackey, Nox serves as this within his inner circle.
  • Deal with the Devil: Just like her master. Nox traded away her chance at an afterlife for infernal powers from a bearded devil.
  • Fate Worse than Death: What Barzillai does to her if she survives her failure to kill the players in her first major encounter with them. She spends most of the second adventure being tortured into insanity, eventually emerging from Barzillai's torture chambers as a broken soul, her jaw wired shut and her free will gone.
  • Warmup Boss: Nox serves as the final boss for the first part of the game, In Hell's Bright Shadow.

    Natsiel

Natsiel

Race: Human (half-succubus)
Class: Sorcerer
Alignment: Chaotic Evil

  • Abusive Parents: To Hetamon, having given birth to him only to drive his father to despair.
  • Cool Sword: She weilds a rhoka sword, normally only used by the urdhefan.
  • Dark Action Girl: Natsiel is quite a bit more melee-oriented than your typical sorcerer.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: The daughter of a human and a succubus.
  • Offing the Offspring: She ends up kidnapping her own son to feed on his life force, and to hand him to Barzillai in exchange for immunity for her predations.
  • Sadist: Natsiel enjoys seeing people fall to despair and damn their own souls.

    Izoni

Tiarise Izoni

Race: Human
Class: Witch (Dimensional Occultist)
Alignment: Lawful Evil

  • Deal with the Devil: Par for the course for this adventure, Izoni has bound several devils for various nefarious purposes.
  • Enemy Summoner: As someone specialized in conjuration magic, she can call more than a few enemy outsiders.
  • Evil Genius: Her role in Barzillai's inner circle is to handle the complex and ongoing project of redacting Kintargo's history.
  • Familiar: She has one, in the form of an imp named Kelaxiax.
  • For Science!: Her motivation to join Barzillai is to see and study the process of a mortal becoming a Genius Loci firsthand.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Izoni is the one responsible for the tooth fairies in Kintargo's district of Devil's Nursery, which she called through the sacrificial murder and disfigurement of a tiefling child.
