Past Characters

Characters who appear in flashbacks, and serve as motivations for the present characters.

    General
  • Posthumous Character: Most of them are long dead now. They are mentioned several times by characters who knew them in the present, but they only actually appear in flashbacks.

Grand Hoof's Past

Characters who are significantly related to Grand Hoof's background.

    Live Wire
Grand Hoof’s wife, and Doom Razier’s mother.
  • Ascended Extra: She was a minor character who only appeared in flashbacks during season 3, but she was brought back into the spotlight as a supporting character in Grand Hoof: The Legend Begins.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Live Wire saves a scientist from an explosion they accidentally created when experimenting with runes. Unfortunately, this results in her death and strains the relationship between Grand Hoof and Doom Raizer.
  • I'm Dying, Please Take My MacGuffin: She created the Celestic Gear, Light Bringer, and gave it to Grand Hoof on her death bed in the hopes that it would find a rightful wielder.
  • The Lost Lenore: To Grand Hoof. Her death is the reason why Grand despises any Rune Magic users and not wanting Lightning to be friend with Script.
  • Nice Girl: She's caring to her family and never has any negative interactions with other characters.
  • Satellite Character: Her entire character is revolved around her family dynamic with Grand Hoof and Doom Raizer.

    Daisy Chain
Doom Raizer’s wife and Lightning Blitz’s mother.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Her: She gets severely injured in a mugging and dies at the same time Grand Hoof enters her hospital room.
  • The Lost Lenore: Her death was what sent Doom Raizer on his path to darkness.
  • Morality Pet: She served as this to Doom Raizer prior to her death. She cheered Doom up after the death of his mother and she even manages to convince him to invite Grand Hoof to their wedding, despite their strained relationship.
  • Nice Girl: Her kind and positive demeanor is what attracted Doom to her in the first place.
  • Satellite Character: Like Live Wire, her only role in the story is to be Doom Raizer's wife.

    Ms. Careheart
A unicorn who was in charge of the orphanage that Grand Hoof grew up in.
  • The Bus Came Back: She returns in the final chapter of Grand Hoof: The Legend Begins, during Grand Hoof's coronation to become a Royal Knight.
  • Parental Substitute: She naturally serves as this for all of the foals in her orphanage, taking a maternal role for all of them. In particular, she comforts Grand after he locks himself in his room and begins blaming himself for leading nearly the entire orphanage to their deaths.
  • Sleep Deprivation: After the massacre of nearly her entire orphanage, she loses much of her passion and undergoes many sleepless nights. Doom even notices that he mane and tail have gotten messy ever since the tragedy.

    Doom Chaser
A fellow colt who befriends an orphaned Grand Hoof when the latter was still young.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: He flies a giant stone slab that Bomber turned into a bomb into the sky to save a mile of Canterlot from being destroyed in the explosion, at the cost of his own life.
  • Heterosexual Life-Partners: Has been Grand Hoof's best friend for years, even becoming Royal Guards together at the same time.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: While his scolding of Grand was harsh, it was necessary to snap him out of his depression and finally convince him to atone for getting nearly the entire orphanage killed, even convincing him to become an ordinary Royal Guard instead of a Knight, as he believes he is unworthy of the latter position.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Zig-zagged with his actions towards Grand as a colt. He makes it clear to Grand that it was his fault his arrogance got many poor orphans killed, and tells him he needs to atone for his sins, telling him he isn't worthy of any praise or rewards but he needs to do something to make up for his mistakes. This does get Grand out of his Heroic BSoD and slowly helps him recover in the moment and mature out of his Bratty Half-Pint personality, but it ultimately did more harm than good for the rest of his life. Grand never forgave himself for the mistake he made and continually tried to deny any promotions that were offered to him as a Royal Guard, under the belief he didn't deserve them. Even Doom himself came to regret what he said to Grand, saying he was just a colt when he said it at the time and he sees he was wrong now. This also ultimately leads to him needing to perform a Heroic Sacrifice, since Grand can't access the full power of his Celestic Gear due to his own doubts and belief he doesn't deserve to have it.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: He and Grand constantly belittle each other, but they're tight-knit companions, enough to convince Grand Hoof to name his son after his first name.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Doom is absolutely livid with Grand for acting like a smug hero when he was just a foal, leading to the deaths of many other foals by a manticore. After punching Grand in the face and berating him for doing nothing to atone for his mistake, Doom yells at him to go to the graveyard and count up all of the graves corresponding to the deaths he caused, which Grand accepts.

    Number Cruncher
A colt who was schoolmates with both Grand Hoof and Doom Chaster. He maintains his friendship with the duo in their adulthood. For tropes pertaining to him after his reveal as Bomber, see the "Bomber" folder.
  • The Atoner: Once it's cleared up that Remarie wasn't cheating on him, it's implied that he stands up against Center for her out of remorse for his prejudgment.
  • Bookworm: According to Grand Hoof, he does nothing but spend time in the library, reading books.
  • Chekhov's Hobby: His nerdy disposition and penchant for staying up late to study would actually allow him to notice Grand and the other orphans sneaking into a forest that was restricted to them, hunting for a manticore. This gives him the hint to free Doom Chaser and rally the town's adults to save Grand Hoof. Ironically, Grand had earlier mocked Cruncher's obsession with academics, yet it would end up saving his life in the end.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: He perceives his talent with math as such, believing that he's stuck in a menial white-collar job and can't do anything else if he quits that position.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Despite his dislike for Grand and harsh criticism of his plan to hunt a manticore, Cruncher still tries rescuing him and the other orphans he brings by first untying Doom Chaser when he was incapacitated by Grand and then reaching out to Ms. Careheart for help. Even after Grand Hoof gets the orphans killed, Cruncher still expresses sympathy for Grand's remorse after getting many other foals killed on his manticore hunt, even maintaining a friendship with him as adults.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Along with Doom, Cruncher points out how suicidal Grand's plan is to hunt down a manticore, stating that they are hostile and four times the size of an adult pony when they were just ponies. Unfortunately, Cruncher's assertions are proven right when Grand hunts down the manticore anyway with a group of foals and gets them all killed.
  • The Resenter: He reveals he is jealous of his friends Grand Hoof and Doom Chaser, for having such amazing talents and being Royal Guard, while he is just an Accountant.
  • Soul-Crushing Desk Job: Even though he's well-off as an accountant and is set for life, Cruncher gets bored with the tedium of his job, even envying the more exciting aspects of Grand and Doom's guard positions.

    Past Big Score
A petty criminal in Canterlot who serves as an early antagonist to Grand Hoof.
  • Affably Evil: For a criminal, he's pretty polite to his customers, even engaging in small talk with them.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: He has ambitions to overthrow Celestia and fashions himself as "King Big Score" over Canterlot, but he's easily dispatched by Grand and Doom, proving that his bark is way louder than his bite. He cements himself into this role when Bomber and Technica enact their scheme, revealing that Big Score was just a customer of them and is practically harmless compared to them.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: He speaks fondly of his wife and openly cherishes his newborn daughter. Exploiting this, Grand and Doom get him to reveal Bomber and Technica's meeting place by offering to place him under house arrest instead of prison, allowing him to care for his newborn daughter rather than abandon her.
  • Legacy Character: He's the grandfather of the modern-day Big Score, whom shares his criminal background.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Beyond being their customer, Big Score is largely uninvolved in Bomber and Technica's schemes, but his use of their Cutie Markers demonstrates the threat they can pose to Canterlot and he later serves as an important informant for Grand to infiltrate a meeting place of them.

    Remarie
The marefriend of Number Cruncher.
  • The Bus Came Back: After being absent ever since Grand Hoof: The Legend Begins, she finally makes a return in Season 9 during "Grand's Regrets", where it is revealed what she did after Number Cruncher's death.
  • Everyone Has Standards: She's understandably horrified with the reveal that Cruncher was Bomber all along and refuses to abet, much less accept, his criminal lifestyle.
  • Love Interest: Serves as this for Number Cruncher.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Center Stage forcibly kisses Remarie, an act witnessed by Number Cruncher who is none too pleased to see this.
  • Never Be Hurt Again: She never dated again after Number Cruncher's death, due to claiming he was her one true love. Rarity can tell it is really because she just doesn't want to suffer heartbreak if something like that ever happens again.
  • Second Love: Subverted; Rarity, Sweetie Belle, and Lightning Blitz all think that she and Grand Hoof could be this for each other, especially after learning about their history together, and try to leave them alone at times. Though the two of them do restart their friendship and spend a lot of time together during Remarie's visit, they ultimately remain Just Friends with no plans of romance in the future between them.
  • Single Woman Seeks Good Man: She dates Number Cruncher and says she loves him by the time they have had four dates together. She prefers a nerd like him over a jerkass like Center Stage.

    Center Stage
An unpleasant pony who works at the same theater with Remarie.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: He's more of a jerk than a villain, but when he's murdered by Bomber, Grand does feel sorry for him, blaming himself for not saving him.
  • Asshole Victim: He is murdered by Bomber, but given how much of an jerkass he was to everyone, and what he did to Remarie, it is hard to really feel bad for him outside of being disappointed that a potential lead is gone.
  • Entitled to Have You: His "love" for Remarie is purely possessive. When Grand and Doom come to the theater, they see Center forcibly kissing Remarie, who obviously hates it and is trying to shove him off. When she finally frees herself, Center tries kissing her again before being stopped by the two guards, in which he then loses any affection for Remarie and swears revenge on her for not becoming his marefriend.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Downplayed since he is more of a jerk than "evil", but when he asks Remarie what a nerd like Number Cruncher can give her that he can't, she tells him "respect". He dismisses this as being "overrated", insisting he can give her a "great time".
  • Forceful Kiss: He gives one to Remarie, pinning her against the wall and locking lips with her. After she finally pushes him off her, he grabs her by the chin and tries to kiss her again, only for her to push him away from her.
  • The Friend Nobody Likes: It's implied that none of his co-workers like him, which is logical, considering how spiteful he can be.
  • Hate Sink: As if his rude attitude didn't make him hateable enough, he cements into this status when he tries forcing himself on Remarie, kissing her and later insulting her current coltfriend, Number Cruncher.
  • If I Can't Have You…: He initially tries to force himself on Remarie, insisting he can give her a better time than a nerd like Number Cruncher ever could. When she continues to resist him, shoving him off her against his demands, he loses patience with her, until Grand and Doom pull him off her and threaten him with assault charges. Before leaving, he growls at Remarie he will have revenge on her for not giving in and being his.
  • Jerkass: He's an egotistical jerk who belittles his fellow coworkers and develops an unhealthy obsession for Remerie.
  • Red Herring: He is set up as being the true identity of Bomber, with evidence showing up against him such as Bomber targeting Remarie after she rejects Center and he swears revenge on her, Center showing up at the Cutie Marker party hosted by Technica, and never being in the same place as Bomber. However, he is revealed to be innocent of this, when he is murdered by Bomber.
  • Villainous Face Hold: While forcing himself on Remarie and already having her pinned against a wall, after she frees herself from a forced lip-lock with him he grabs her by the chin and demands she "come here", trying to force a second kiss on her.

    Bomber (Spoilers)
A pair of criminals who use Cutie Markers. Bomber initially starts with a secret identity, until he is revealed to be Number Cruncher in disguise.
  • Alas, Poor Villain: After attempting to use a dysfunctional Cutie Marker that would cause him to explode, Bomber gets surrounded by a magical shield created by Celestia to contain his explosion, leaving him to perish. As the weight of the situation dawns on him, Bomber begs for Grand, Celestia, or anyone else to save him, but when he's told that the effect can't be reversed, he begins tearing up, turns to Remarie, and garners just enough composure to tell her that he's sorry for everything he's done before dying. It's an oddly pitiful scene to show how dangerous Cutie Markers can be to not only other ponies, but to its own users as well.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: He serves as one of the two main antagonists of Grand Hoof: The Legend Begins, working as muscle for Technica and acting as a personal foe to Grand Hoof.
  • Big Bad Friend: He is revealed to be this when his true identity is revealed, putting him against his friends Grand and Doom, and making him responsible for Doom's death.
  • Domestic Abuse: As he slowly loses his mind from using the Cutie Markers, Bomber begins acting possessive of Remarie, paranoid of anyone taking her away from him and refusing to listen to her appeals of stopping his mad rampage. He even tries to kill her when he thinks that she's cheating on him with Center.
  • Dragon Their Feet: Played With, since he isn't really Technica's Dragon per say, but he does act as the main muscle for her plans and mostly goes along with her plans. However, she is defeated and killed by Grand, leaving him as the sole main antagonist of the story.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Deconstructed. Bomber did initially express genuine care about Remarie and wanted her by his side. Unfortunately, his use of the Cutie Markers, thinking that it would give him the courage to ask her out, drove him insane and led him to become a criminal. Although his love for Remarie remained, it is not romanticized or portrayed as a source for heartwarming moments. Instead, Bomber's love becomes more twisted from time and increasingly more possessive of her, even trying to kill her and another pony when he suspects that she was cheating on him. By the time she realizes his true colors and rejects him, Bomber has already been driven to the deep end by his crimes and instantly accuses everyone but himself for destroying his relationship. Ultimately, Bomber's one redeeming quality instead comes off as horrifying and downright abusive.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: When Remarie is disgusted by his murder of Center, Bomber is taken aback by this, thinking that she would accept his criminal and murderous lifestyle.
  • Foreshadowing: Cruncher is conspicuously absent during Bomber and Technica's attack on the theater, in which the former specifically targets Remarie. Considering that Cruncher saw Center kissing Remarie and mistook her for a cheater, this serves as an early hint to his true identity as Bomber.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: When Bomber tries justifying himself by claiming that he sought excitement to escape his normally boring math profession, Grand Hoof wastes no time to call out how flimsy of an excuse it is when he tried committing collateral damage on Canterlot and murdered both Doom and Center.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: His obsession with Cutie Markers ultimately killed him, as he attempts to use a damaged one that instead converts his magic into an explosive energy, causing him to blow up.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: Bomber first accepted Technica's offer to use a Cutie Marker because he, as Number Cruncher had a cutie mark that made him skilled at math, a boring profession that drove him to seek a more exciting talent in the form of a Cutie Marker.
  • Insecure Love Interest: He feels like he is nothing special and is nervous around Remarie. This takes a dark turn when it is revealed he used a Cutie Marker to gain the confidence to talk to her, which was ultimately his Start of Darkness.
  • Love Makes You Evil: He resorted to using Cutie Markers to give him to confidence to ask out Remarie.
  • Mad Bomber: As his name implies, Bomber can use bombs in combat and even has a bomb symbol on his suit.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: Bomber wears a black gas mask with red eye holes and a third hole for his unicorn horn.
  • Never My Fault: Due to his loss of rationality from the use of Cutie Markets, he deflects any blame Grand tries to place on him for his actions on others:
    • After his identity as Bomber is revealed, He blames Center Stage for causing him to attack on Remarie, due to mistakenly believing she was cheating on him with Center.
    • When Doom pulls a Heroic Sacrifice to take away the bomb he set up and gets killed in the ensuing explosion, Bomber blames Grand for getting him killed, believing that he makes everyone around him miserable. He argues that because he kept digging deeper into the Cutie Markers it resulted in the death of Doom Chaser, just like all the other orphans Grand got killed years ago. He even has the gall to imply that it was a deliberate action on Grand's part. This completing ignores how Doom died getting rid of a bomb Number himself enchanted as Bomber.
    • In response to Remarie rejecting his criminal activity, Bomber loses his cool and irrationally accuses Grand of "turning her" against him. Grand rightfully retorts that he drove her away himself.
  • Pet the Dog: After killing Center, Bomber leaves behind a message for Grand, informing him that he holds no animosity towards him and seems generally reluctant to harm him, unless he persists in the investigation.
  • Predecessor Villain: Bomber shares the same name as another pony who uses a Cutie Marker in the main series, but they don't seem to have any relation beyond that.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: He and Technica regularly insult and belittle each other, where they reluctantly work together out of a shared enmity towards Grand Hoof and his allies.

    Technica
Another Cutie Marker user who plans to continue the sale of the substance to vulnerable ponies.
  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: When Technica gets grounded near a fuel source and a growing fire, she tries to keep her cool, but she ultimately loses it and begs Grand to save her. Unfortunately for her, it's too late by then and she gets caught in the ensuing explosion.
  • Artificial Limbs: Technica is a unicorn, but she has mechanical wings that allow her to fly like a pegasus. Grand even confuses her for an alicorn when she zips by and meets him for the first time.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: She serves as one of the two main antagonists of Grand Hoof: The Legend Begins, serving as the mastermind behind the plan to flood Canterlot's streets with Cutie Markets and cause an epidemic of them.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Technica gets killed by Grand before his final confrontation with Bomber.
  • It's All About Me: When Bomber sets a bomb to destroy an entire mile of Canterlot, Technica is horrified, but only because she'd be caught in the blast radius, completely ignorant of the other casualties that would result from it.
  • Karmic Death: Technica is killed in an explosion.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: Technica wears a mask in the shape of a bat.
  • Shock and Awe: Technica's suit is equipped with a taser that can be used in self-defense.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork: She and Bomber regularly insult and belittle each other, where they reluctantly work together out of a shared enmity towards Grand Hoof and his allies.
  • Villains Want Mercy: When Grand defeats Technica, and she is put in a dangerous situation, being close to some ignited fuel and unable to save herself, she fully expects that Grand will still save her despite all she has done, refusing to tell him anything until he saves her. When Grand decides to just leave her to her fate, she starts screaming at him to save her, saying she doesn't want to die.

Springer's Past

Characters who are significantly related to Springer's background.

    Sharp Paw
The former leader of the Jakhowls.
  • A Child Shall Lead Them: He first became chief of the Jakhowl when he defeated the corrupt Strong Strike to overthrow him.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Long before it was revealed that he was Springer's father, it was stated he was Princess Luna's partner and the former chief of the Jakhowls before they disappeared, with Luna and Ruby having nothing but praise to say about him. When it is revealed that Springer is his son, Flash is enthusiastic that Springer's dad was the head of all the Jakhowls and Springer asks Luna and Ruby if they can tell him more about him and Calm Paw someday.
  • The Exile: He temporarily became this when he first fought Strong Strike for leadership over the tribe and lost, being exiled for losing. The rules of the tribe say you can only challenge the chief once every three months, so Sharp trained while in exile to become strong enough to beat Strong. Lucky for him, he met Luna while he was in exile, and after hearing his situation she agreed to help him train.
  • Fading Away: When the Alicorn Amulet is unleashed, he, along with every Jakhowl and Trickster, fade away and are absorbed into the amulet.
  • The Leader: He was the chief of the Jakhowls in the past.
  • The Mentor: When he was still alive, he served as this to Ruby Scarlet.
  • Training from Hell: He went through this when Luna agreed to help him train for three months so he could beat Strong. It ultimately paid off, and he was able to defeat Strong.

    Calm Paw
Another Jakhowl and Sharp Paw's wife.
  • Combination Attack: According to Ruby, she was a genius with coming up with combinations of magic and aura.
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: Just like her husband, Sharp Paw, Calm Paw was a close friend of Luna and Ruby and cared about them and the safety of her husband. When it is eventually revealed that Springer is her son, Springer is shown to care about both of his parents equally, remarking how they were both pretty cool and asks Luna and Ruby if they can tell him more about both of them someday.
  • Fading Away: Like the other Jakhowls and the Tricksters, she is absorbed into the Alicorn Amulet, fading away in the process.
  • Insult of Endearment: She and Ruby constantly bicker, but it's all playful ribbing.
  • Love Triangle: She viewed Ruby Scarlet as a rival for Sharp Paw's affection. However, the feeling didn't seem to be reciprocated by Ruby and after Calm marries Sharp, there isn't any animosity between the two.

    Dark Mist
The former leader of the Tricksters.
  • Arch-Enemy: He's the most hated enemy of Sharp Paw and Princess Luna, but especially the former.
  • Batman Gambit: He had anticipated that Sharp Paw would connect every Jakhowls’ aura together in their battle, and gave Vile Rune the signal to start the ritual.
  • Die Laughing: His final act as he begins Fading Away like the rest of the Tricksters and Jakhowls is to let out a loud maniacal laugh, believing he has finally accomplished his goal of destroying the Jakhowls.
  • Epic Fail: His plan to kill the Jakhowls ends up failing on multiple levels. Not only did Springer survive his initial plan thanks to Luna's protection spell on his egg, a pair of Jakhowl eggs are eventually discovered in the future to help restore the species, essentially rendering his efforts and sacrifice of his species All for Nothing. He also hoped to be remembered as "the greatest Trickster that ever lived", but Luna declares that since it is her duty to have the Jakhowls and Tricksters added to the history books, she plans to make sure he is remembered as "the dumbest Trickster that ever lived" and that his stupidity almost destroyed both races.
  • Fading Away: His ultimate fate after he's absorbed into the Alicorn Amulet.
  • Final Solution: His goal is to wipe out all of the Jakhowls, no matter the sacrifices that need to be made. He seemingly accomplishes this goal when he has the Alicorn Amulet absorb the Jakhowls and Tricksters' aura, but Springer manages to survive, along with a pair of Jakhowl eggs.
  • For the Evulz: Why does he commit so many atrocities? No reason at all. It's just fun for him.
  • Hate Sink: While Shade is too charming to completely hate, Dark Mist lacks Shade's more entertaining aspects and commits even more deplorable crimes, from trying to enslave and raze an entire settlement of ponies to sacrificing nearly his entire race just to wipe out the Jakhowls. Overall, he's written to embody all of Shade's "values."
  • Hero Killer: His final plan ends up killing Sharp Paw, Calm Paw, and the Jakhowls as a whole.
  • Lack of Empathy: He didn’t care that the battle would result in the extinction of his species, so long as the Jakhowls were gone.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Despite his ruthlessness towards his enemies, he treated his subordinates quite well, and even patted the head of a young Trickster, who was revealed to be a young Shade, and he allowed him to become part of a contingency plan should any of the Jakhowls survive.
  • Predecessor Villain: Not only is he responsible for the near extinction of both the Jakhowls and Tricksters, but he also set Shade up to eliminate any surviving Jakhowls, which includes Springer.
  • Taking You with Me: He figured that if taking out the Jakhowls meant taking out his own species, than so be it.
  • Villainous Legacy: It is because of him that the Jakhowls are nearly extinct, with only Springer remaining. His contingency plan also made it so Shade would remain to kill any remaining Jakhowls and continue the Trickster legacy without him.
  • Villain Team-Up: He was more than willing to work with Vile Rune if it meant accomplishing his goal to eliminate the Jackhowls.

    Vile Rune
A unicorn who sought to overthrow the alicorns in the past.
  • All for Nothing: He spent years researching for a way to surpass the power of the alicorns. When he created the Alicorn Amulet, which was the culmination of his research, he found out the hard way, that he was still no match for Luna.
  • Ambition Is Evil: His ultimate goal was to overthrow the alicorns. It didn’t work out, because the Alicorn Amulet was nowhere near powerful enough to allow him to defeat Luna.
  • Antagonistic Offspring: Despite his father’s best efforts, he refused to back out of the path he went down, and continued studying dark magic.
  • Lack of Empathy: He didn’t care how many times his father tried to warn him of the consequences of his actions, as he continued committing crimes and studying dark magic to try to surpass the alicorns.
  • Power Up Let Down: He created the Alicorn Amulet in the hopes that he could take on the alicorns. It didn’t work, as Luna was still far more powerful than him, and easily wiped the floor with him.
  • Villainous Legacy: The Alicorn Amulet was his creation, and Lightning Blitz eventually discovered it, and tried to use it to take over Equestria.

    Strong Strike
The former chief of Jakhowl tribe who was defeated by Sharp Paw.
  • 0% Approval Rating: None of the Jakhowls are happy to work for him when he becomes chief, which makes it easy for them to throw their support behind Sharp Paw when he reclaims leadership.
  • Arch-Enemy: While not on the same level as Dark Mist, Sharp Paw hated him for his mistreatment toward Jakhowls and disrespected his family.
  • Bad Boss: He treats every one of his subjects as slaves, forcing them to build a monument in his own name.
  • Dirty Coward: When Sharp trains and returns to demand a second duel, Strong is reluctant to do so and only obliges when Sharp calls him coward, wounding his pride.
  • The Exile: After being defeated in a duel for the throne, Sharp exiles Strong from the Jakhowl camp, killing any chance of him ever abusing his power again.
  • Fantastic Racism: He forbids Jakhowls from interact with ponies and any kind of species, viewing them all as inferior.
  • Hate Sink: Strong Strike is a cruel, arrogant, and xenophobic chief who's practically an antithesis to all of the noble traits previous Jakhowls exhibited in the series.
  • Hypocrite: He has the gall to call Sharp's father weak, even though he previously lost every single duel he initiated against him for the throne.
  • Last Disrespects: He mocked Sharp Paw's father at his own funeral and calling him "weak", Sharp Paw didn't take it well.
  • Opportunistic Bastard: When Sharp's father was killed by Tricksters, leadership fell to Sharp's weaker grandfather. Sensing this opportunity, Strong wasted no time to challenge and defeat him, usurping the position in the process.
  • The Social Darwinist: When Sharp Paw's father got killed, he mocked him for being weak and believes he should lead the tribe so they would becomes stronger.
  • Starter Villain: Chronologically, Strong is the first antagonist Sharp has to beat before he can become chief of the Jakhowls.
  • Suspiciously Similar Substitute: He's pretty much Fangpire if he led Jakhowls, given that they're both darwinist dictators who aren't above harming children.
  • This Cannot Be!: Upon being beaten by Sharp, Strong can only express shock at the outcome, unable to comprehend the fact that he lost to a "brat".
  • Token Evil Teammate: So far, Strong is the only evil Jakhowl showcased in the series.
  • Would Hurt a Child: He willing to kill Sharp Paw (who is youngling) during their duel in order to retain his status as a chief.

The Cult of Shadows' Past

Characters who are significantly related to the backgrounds of each member from the Cult of Shadows.

    Noble Banner
A royal guard who found Cold Steel and brought him back to Canterlot.
  • Friend-or-Idol Decision: His Secret Test of Character put him in this situation. He relived his first day of training, where he acted cocky and stood up to Grand Hoof to protect his friend. He thought they wanted to see if he had matured since that day, and believed that by doing the same thing from the first day he had failed. However, he actually passed due to doing what he believed was right for his friend instead of blindingly following orders. What Noble says before being told he passed also sells it.
Noble: If being a knight means holding myself back from doing what I believe is right, then I've changed my mind. I don't wanna be a knight. I'd rather spend my life looking out for those who can't help themselves, then smile and do what others tell me is right when I know it's not.
  • The Mentor: Served as this for Cold Steel when he was first found.
  • Secret Test of Character: He went through one to become a Royal Knight. He ended up reliving a moment from his first day of training in the Royal Guard, when he stood up to Grand Hoof to defend his friend Swift Wind. He does exactly what he did that day, believing he failed due to showing the same cocky attitude he did then, only to hear he passed due to doing what he believed was the right thing to do.

    Shadow Corrupter’s Parents
A couple of ponies who worshipped the Corrupted Shadow, and sought to have their son become its new vessel.
  • Abusive Parents: Initially, they seem to treat their children well enough, but it's later revealed that they just see their children as potential vassals for the Corrupted Shadow, as they willingly subject Shadow Corrupter to a ritual that would fulfill that plan and ignore his protests against this.
  • Asshole Victim: Its revealed that Shadow killed them after he became the vessel for the Corrupted Shadow. Since they were the ones who initiated the ritual to make him the Corrupted Shadow’s vessel, they pretty much had it coming.
  • Freudian Excuse: As they explained in "Bonds" the whole reason they joined the Cult of Shadows and gave birth to their son, only to betray him, was because they had constantly seen unicorns that were stronger than them and wanted the same power themselves.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Discussed in-universe. Some ponies like Ruby Scarlet and Shadow Corrupter himself don't think that they're desire to have more power justifies betraying their own son. However, Trixie also notes that they may have just grown desperate to be equals with the unicorns that could "move cities", believing that said desperation is what led to their betrayal and that anyone, including herself, could fall like they did.
  • Hate Sink: Their role as Abusive Parents is intended for the reader to finally sympathize with Shadow Corrupter.
  • Predecessor Villain: They serve this in War of the Lost City. They were the ones who tried to sacrifice their son Gleaming Path, which resulted in his corruption to Shadow Corrupter and desire to attain more power.
  • Unholy Matrimony: They were genuinely in love with one another, despite being part of a cult that worshiped the Corrupted Shadow.

    Tempora's Parents
A pair of uncaring Canterlot nobles who care more about their own wealth than love or happiness and tried to force their daughter into a loveless Arranged Marriage for their own benefit.
  • Abusive Parents: They were emotionally abusive to Tempera, never showing her any love her entire life. After she ran away from home they didn't even bother to report her as missing.
  • Awful Wedded Life: They openly admit they don't love each other, and just stay together for mutual wealth.
  • Hate Sink: It is clear from their entire attitude that we are not supposed to like them. They emotionally abused Tempera her whole life, never showing any interest in her hobbies or interests, and tried to force her into a loveless marriage for their own benefit, despite her protests.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Tempera reunites with them in "Lingering Shadows", with her going off on them for how they treated her growing up and what it did to her. They try to apologize, but it is clear they are only doing so because after she ran away they lost most of their wealth and influence, caring more about their reputation than her safety. This leads to her cutting them out of her life for good, with this being the only reunion the former cultists have with their family and loved ones that didn't go well.
  • Karma Houdini Warranty: After everything they put Tempera through, it is mentioned by Celestia that after Tempera ran away from home, when the foals she always entertained reported her missing they were both investigated by the Royal Guard and their attempts to bribe them into not investigating them failed. As of the present they have lost most of the influence they once had.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Their poor treatment of their daughter and never showing her any love her entire life made Tempera starved to be loved someday, which led to her running away from home and eventually falling in love with Shadow Corrupter and joining his cult.

    Haut Monde
A rich pony that Tempera was originally meant to marry out of a business deal from her parents.
  • Hate Sink: He's a misogynistic narcissist who acts insufferably snooty in nearly every second of his first meeting with Tempera. It is clear nobody is meant to feel sorry for him when Tempera throws a drink in his face for his attitude.
  • Jerkass: He could give the Canterlot royalty a run for their money in this department. He carries a very pompous attitude and insensitively dismisses Tempera's artistic abilities.
  • Meaningful Name: His name literally means "high or fashionable society." Befitting given his wealthy status.
  • Narcissist: When talking with Tempera, he only wants to discuss his business ventures.
  • Old Money: He comes from an "old money" family and inherited much of their wealth.
  • Rich Bastard: He's quite wealthy and he doesn't have a single redeeming quality.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: He tells Tempera that once they are married she won't have time for a "ridiculous hobby like art" anymore, since she will be busy doing what "mares like her" are meant to do, mainly staying at home, raising their kids, making sure he has everything he needs for his work, and occasionally throwing big lavish parties for important business associates.
  • Straw Misogynist: He believes that all mares should only perform domestic duties.

Spike's Past

Characters who are significantly related to Spike's background.

    Silverbolt
A Mystic Lightning Dragon and the one that Malafear has a personal grudge against.
  • Affectionate Nickname: He's called "Bolty" by Fira.
  • Arch-Enemy: To Malafear.
  • Big Damn Heroes: He first appears saving Starswirl from some lava that erupted.
  • Crazy-Prepared: He shows he always thinks two steps ahead when dealing with Malafear, making sure everything was prepared for if he ever returned while simultaneously protecting his child. He secretly moved a small part of his own soul into Spike's egg before he passed it on to Starswirl and confronted Malafear. This small piece of soul then secretly drained Spike of most of his magic throughout his life, limiting what Spike could do, but making Silverbolt's soul stronger so when Malafear would return, and Spike tried to seal him away again, Silverbolt's soul would be the one scarified in the Suicide Attack, not Spike's. He also made sure that only a microscopic piece of his soul was left behind afterwards, not lasting very long but long enough for him to say a final goodbye to his son.
  • Forgot About His Powers: He could summon a shield spell that prevents Malafear from taking the souls of shielded victims. Too bad he didn't think about that when Malafear murders Fira, something that Silverbolt himself Lampshades.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: To stop Malafear, Silverbolt utilizes a spell that can separate his soul from the body and seal it away. However, this is a suicide spell and destroys Silverbolt's physical body in the process.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: He is a Mystic Lightning Dragon, which can shoot out lightning, as the name implies.
  • Relationship Upgrade: With Fira. He showed a clear attraction to her in one flashback but told Starswirl they were just friends. When Spike sees the next memory though, a Time Skip reveals the two of them indeed got married, and they had an egg together, which is implied to be Spike's egg.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: When Starswirl teases him about Fira, he quickly tells him he and Fira are just friends.
  • So Proud of You: He says this to Spike, his son, right before Spike seals away Malafear for good.
  • Shock and Awe: He is a Mystic Lightning Dragon, so he can use Lightning magic.
  • Spirit Advisor: It's revealed that he was the one giving Spike flashbacks on his parents' past, giving him the spirit and strength needed to stop Malfear in the present. When Spike manages to escape from the book Malafear trapped him in, he can still see and speak to Silverbolt's spirit, but only he can do so, making everyone else think Spike is just talking to himself.

  • Vitriolic Best Buds: He and Starswirl frequently snark at each other, but it's all in good nature.

    Fira
A purple Flame dragon who becomes Silverbolt's wife
  • Deceased Parents Are the Best: She turns out to be Spike's mother, but she's killed by Malafear before he's born.
  • Dying Declaration of Love: The last thing she ever says is telling her husband she loves him, and asking him to protect their child.
  • Killed Off for Real: She gets killed by Malafear after absorbing her element.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Mystic Dragon eggs only hatch when it is time for the dragon inside to fulfill their destiny and can potentially remain unhatched for centuries, which Silverbolt keeps a secret to Fira about Spike's egg, knowing that she'd be heartbroken to find out because she's excited to be a mother and likely will pass in the meantime. Starswirl convinces Silverbolt to reveal the truth, but Malafear attacks before he can deliver thenews.
  • Nice Girl: Unlike most other dragons, Fira is completely friendly to ponies like Starswirl and later selflessly selflessly tries to save Silverbolt from Malafear.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: She is a Flame Dragon, a special type of dragon that can wield fire.
  • Relationship Upgrade: She and Silverbolt show a clear attraction to each other when she is first seen, but Silverbolt insists they are Just Friends. The next memory Spike sees though reveals, the two of them got married.
  • Red Is Heroic: Downplayed. She's colored purple, but she has red spikes.
  • Stuffed In A Fridge: Malafear murders her by sucking out her soul, right in front of her husband and their friends. This just gives Silverbolt one more reason to hate Malafear, and causes Spike to mourn for the mother he never knew.

  • Undignified Death: After murdering Fira, Malafear throws her body to the ground in an undignified heap, mocking her sacrifice and flatly declaring that her death was worthless to him because she didn't have an element that he didn't have already.

    Silverbolt's Allies
Other dragons who are recruited by Silverbolt to take down Malafear.
  • Blow You Away: Arbour shoots out tornadoes to fight off Malafear.
  • Due to the Dead: After fighting off Malafear, the dragons comfort Silverbolt after the death of Fira, in which Jade even makes a coffin of gems to bury her in.
  • Green Thumb: Arbour can use plants in combat, such as using vines to restrain Malafear.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: All of them weaponize a certain element, specifically:
    • Furnace is a Flame Dragon.
    • Shard is an Iron Dragon.
    • Aurora is a Light Dragon.
    • Voltic is a Lightning Dragon.
    • Arbour is a Wood Dragon.
    • Jade is a Crystal Dragon.
  • Playing with Fire: As his name implies, Furnace specializes in using fire during a fight.
  • Reflecting Laser: Jade uses the gems on her tail to reflect the lasers that Aurora can shoot, blinding Malafear temporarily.
  • Refusal of the Call: Voltic is initially reluctant to join Silverbolt because he doesn't want to abandon his home at a gem deposit, which has sheltered him for generations. He's forced to join anyway when Malafear attacks and Voltic has to defend himself.
  • Shock and Awe: Like Silverbolt, Voltic can fire lightning bolts.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: They only appear in a few scenes in flashbacks, but it is thanks to them that Silverbolt was able to stop Malafear's rampage in the past.
  • Two Girls to a Team: Aurora and Arbour are the only two elemental dragons who are recruited by Silverbolt.

  • Parental Substitute: Since Ruby Scarlet was found as an orphan, Princess Amore has served as this for her.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Unlike everyone in the Crystal Empire who wanted to lock Sombra up or have him executed, she chose to let Sombra choose his own punishment. She felt he should be the one to make the decision for himself and gave him two options of either going to the new prison for the rest of his life or becomes a servant for the Crystal Empire. He chose the latter.

    Bright Mac and Pear Butter
The parents of Applejack, Apple Bloom and Big Mac.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Downplayed with both of them. While talking with Applejack, unaware she is their daughter from the future, Appljeack explains to them how she has experience raising kids due to how her parents passed away when she was young and her grandma taking care of her and her siblings, without giving any specific information. When they eventually learn Applejack's real identity they both encourage her to go back to her own time while showing no signs of fear or regret with the knowledge they will die soon.
  • Happily Married: They lived a happy life together, even after Pear Butter was disowned by her father, and had three wonderful children together.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: They have no idea that the four strangers they met are actually from the future, one of which includes an older version of their eldest daughter. Though they eventually figure it out when Rogue calls out to Applejack using her real name.
  • So Proud of You: They unknowingly do this with Applejack when they meet her older self from the future. When Applejack awkwardly explains to them how she had to look after her baby sister after their parents passed away, without revealing anything too specific, she wonders what they would think of how well she did. The two of them assure her that if she kept her family, safe, happy, and helped when they needed it, then her parents would be proud of her, saying they themselves would be happy if their children lived like that. They give a more direct one to Applejack after learning her true identity.
