Characters / OMORI – Faraway Town

Go To

    open/close all folders

A small idyllic town where the main group grew up. Sunny can explore the town if he decides to leave his house starting on Three Days Left.

The Main Group's Families

    Sunny's Mom
"Hey SUNNY, it's MOMMY. I'm still in the city setting things up for our new home. Did you finish packing yet?"
Sunny and Mari's mother. She's currently out of town in preparation for the move.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Downplayed, but it's mentioned that while she wants to get home and see Sunny she's very easily distracted by things like a furniture sale. She even forgets to call the electricity company to keep the lights on for the last few days in their house, leaving Sunny to wander around in complete darkness during the first time he wakes up.
  • Expy: Her presence only as a series of voicemails is very clearly evocative of Ness' Dad.
  • Parents as People: Sunny's mother is neglectful to a concerning degree considering the depressive state her son is in: she leaves her son alone at home for several days while she prepares for their move even after the lights cut out due to her own mistake, and later she prioritizes a furniture sale over returning home to Sunny on time. On the other hand, it's clear that she does care about Sunny's wellbeing, reminding him to take care of himself through sticky notes and encouraging him to spend time with his friends again before they move.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Not only has she outlived her daughter, but making the wrong choices will make her outlive her son as well.

    Sunny's Dad
Sunny and Mari's father. Not much is known about him, as he is never seen nor brought up during the present day.
  • Disappeared Dad: He does not physically appear at any point in the story except in Black Space (as a shadow) and in flashbacks (and in the latter case, we only see a picture). It is implied that he left the family after Mari's death, and possibly disowned Sunny.
  • I Have No Son!: During one of the Black Space segments, Omori encounters a shadowy version of Sunny's Dad chopping down the tree where Mari supposedly hung herself. If Omori talks to him, he proclaims that Sunny is not his son. It is unclear if Sunny's father actually disowned him or if it's another manifestation of Sunny's fear of rejection if the true circumstances surrounding Mari's death come out.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Just like his ex-wife, he outlived his own daughter. This is implied to be the reason why he abandoned the family.

    Kel and Hero's Family
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kels_family_photo_5.png
What a good-looking family...

The family of Kel and Hero. They consist of the mom, dad, the dog Hector, and baby sister Sally, who's less than a year old.

  • Education Mama: Implied. In a flashback after the fight with Basil, Hero tells Omori that he wants to become a chef but his parents want him to become a doctor instead. In the present day, Hero thinks that becoming a chef was a silly dream, and currently attends medical school. Add My Beloved Smother into the mix and it's possible that he was emotionally manipulated into becoming a doctor.
  • My Beloved Smother: Downplayed. Kel's mother is clearly a little bit peeved that Hero's spending his days back from college with Sunny rather than with the family, but Hero mollifies her with his charm and some flowers.
  • Parents as People: Though undoubtedly better than Sunny, Aubrey and Basil's parents in that they are actively caring for their children, Kel and Hero's parents are still far from perfect:
    • They show clear Parental Favoritism towards Hero over Kel due to his talents and productivity: Kel recounts that when both he and Hero were crying following Hero's Anguished Outburst at him over Mari's death, their parents both went to comfort Hero and completely ignored Kel, leaving Hero himself to be the one to comfort his little brother. This doesn't appear to have changed by the present day, with Kel suffering from Middle Child Syndrome between Hero and Sally.
    • As noted in Education Mama above, it's implied that Hero gave up on his dream of being a chef and went into medical school instead as a result of pressure from them, particularly his mother.
  • Practically Different Generations: Sally's a baby, while her brothers are in high school and college.

    Basil's Grandma
"BASIL... is that you?"
Basil's bedridden Grandmother.
  • Adapted Out: She had a Headspace variant in the game's demo, kicking off the adventure by asking the main group to find her grandson. She did not make the cut into the final game, save for a fairly out-of-the-way cameo as a Stranger.
  • Dropped a Bridge on Her: She's suddenly taken to the hospital on the third day and it's heavily implied that she dies — which may be a catalyst for Basil's breakdown for that day and may explain why it's implied he still commits suicide offscreen in the Hikikomori route.
  • Granny Classic: Her headspace varient in the demo was this, being very polite and motherly to the group in their interactions.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Basil’s mental health was already held together with chewing gum and string, and her implied death causing him to attempt suicide regardless of route that night suggests that she was one of the only things holding Basil together.
  • Parental Substitute: Seems to have served as one for Basil, who has lived at her house for as long as the friend group has known him due to his parents traveling all the time. this may have contributed to Basil's complete breakdown after her implied death.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: She's this by (implicitly) dying, as her death soon has Basil break down and try to commit suicide.

    Polly
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/fagdgt5ucaa8sb0.jpg
Official art of Polly from OMOCAT's Twitter
"Sigh... is there nothing I can do?"
Basil's caretaker, who tends to Basil and his Grandmother.
  • The Caretaker: Is this to Basil and his Grandmother, as Basil's real parents are often absent from home and his Grandmother is in no state to take care of either of them on her own.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Before she's properly introduced in the evening of Three Days Left, Polly can be found in the Othermart Pharmacy during the morning, seemingly browsing for medication for Basil's grandmother.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Polly is shown to worry heavily about her effectiveness as a caretaker for Basil and his grandmother, frequently wondering if she is doing something wrong or if there is more she can possibly do for them. She also regularly downplays herself and her talents: being surprised when Kel compliments her cooking, for example. This reaches a heartbreaking conclusion in the ending where Basil commits suicide, as Polly can only lament how she wasn't able to do anything to stop it:
    "Why...Why am I so useless?"
  • My Name Is ???: She's named as such in her Early-Bird Cameo mentioned above, as well as briefly before she formally introduces herself.
  • Nice Girl: She's very kind to Sunny and Kel when she meets them, inviting them to dinner for helping Basil. Later, she even lets the entire main group stay over on short notice, simply because they want to be there for Basil when he's at his lowest. She's also very caring toward Basil, trying her best to keep him safe and happy.
  • Parental Substitute: She tries to fill this role for Basil, since his parents are out of the picture and his grandmother is in no condition to keep looking after him. Unfortunately, it's largely deconstructed: Basil is far too troubled to be comfortable with opening up to Polly, and she has no way of knowing the reason why that is. The result is that Basil actively keeps Polly at arm's length, and while Polly notices this she can't figure out what exactly she's doing wrong.

    Aubrey's Parents
Aubrey's parents, consisting of her neglectful mother and out-of-the-picture father.
  • Alcoholic Parent: Implied with Aubrey's mother, who has a large number of empty or spilled cans and bottles among the trash strewn about her house.
  • Disappeared Dad: Aubrey's father left her and her mother sometime after Mari's death for unknown reasons, his absence being another factor in Aubrey's spiral into violence.
  • The Ghost: Aubrey's father never appears in-game, not even via photo like Sunny's.
  • Parental Neglect: Heavily implied with Aubrey's mother. The one time the player can interact with her, she refuses to look away from the TV, and her house is an absolute mess to boot. It's obvious she isn't taking her job as mother very seriously at all.
  • Trash of the Titans: Played for Drama. Aubrey's house is absolutely filled to the brim with trash, to the point where it blocks the entrance to her mother's room.

The Hooligans

    General
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_hooligans_group_art_0.png
"Come on gang... LETS TEACH THEM A LESSON!!"note

A gang of neighborhood kids led by Aubrey.

  • Blood Knight: The whole gang (except for Charlie) are eager to fight Kel and Sunny, often with little provication.
  • Gender-Equal Ensemble: With Angel, Vance, and the Maverick as the guys, and Aubrey, Kim, and Charlene as the girls.
  • Heel–Face Turn: They act as the main antagonists for the Three and Two Days Left Faraway sections, but by the end of One Day Left, the entire group is on better terms with Sunny and co, with Aubrey even hoping the two groups can hang out together in the future.
  • Hopeless Boss Fight: At one point, you need to fight them all together with just Sunny and Kel. As you would expect, beating a team of 6 with 2 people (one of which is a scrawny malnourished shut-in) is not exactly an easy task, considering their collective massive health pool, hard-hitting attacks, and ability to lower your party's attack power. It is possible to beat them by stocking up on as many healing items from the pharmacy as you can and preparing for one hell of a marathon… or simply using the Pepper Spray that you can acquire from Kel's house, which defeats them in one hit, but regardless of the outcome of the battle, the plot progresses as normal.
  • Quirky Miniboss Squad: They effectively serve as this for Aubrey, particularly on Three Days Left where you fight each of them before you can confront her. Their lineup consists of a Bratty Half-Pint Chuunibyou (Angel), a Gentle Giant (Charlie), an even bigger Chuunibyou who has to bribe girls to date him (The Maverick) and a pair of hopeless Sweet Tooths (Kim and Vance). None of them are particularly malicious and their fights aren't played very seriously, especially compared to the one-on-one confrontations with Aubrey.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Kel sees them as this to Aubrey, blaming them for how aggressive Aubrey has become over the years. By the the end of the normal path, however, it's clear they're just a bunch of goofballs, no different than Aubrey's initial friend group before Mari's passing, who genuinely care for her and her well-being. Once Aubrey rejoins Sunny's party, she even expresses interest in both groups hanging out together in the future.

    Kim and Vance
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kim_and_vance_battle.png
"KIM is a lot of talk, but she's got a big heart. And me? I got some big muscles."
Vance

Two members of the Hooligans, Aubrey's close friend, Kim, and Kim's older brother, Vance. Their Headspace counterparts are Berly and Van, respectively.

  • Blood Knight: Kim, even more so than some of the other Hooligans. When Kel offers her an entire bag of candy in exchange for info on Aubrey, she instead decides to fight them for it, despite how much easier it would be to just take the bribe. For his part, Vance only fights to support his sister, and noticeably has no desire to fight Kel or Sunny when talked to on his own.
  • Brains and Brawn: Vance claims Kim and him are this. Though Kim does pack a mean punch herself. In fact, Vance is more of a Stone Wall, whereas Kim is a Glass Cannon.
  • Brother–Sister Team: They act as this when they fight Sunny and Kel.
  • Crossing the Burnt Bridge: After fighting Kel and Sunny a few times, Kim drums up the courage to come to Sunny's house to ask for help when Aubrey locks herself in her house. Kel lampshades that it's rich of her to ask for help after Aubrey nearly drowned Basil, while Hero notes that it must be serious if Kim is coming to them for help.
  • Everyone Has Standards: To her credit, Kim looks awkward about the fact that Aubrey nearly killed Basil by pushing him into the lake when Kel brings it up, as Kim asks him and Sunny for help with Aubrey. Stealing candy is one thing, almost Accidental Murder is another.
  • Five-Finger Discount: Kel and Sunny catch them trying to stuff candy in their pockets in the Othermart candy shop, something they've apparently been caught doing before as the shop owner mentions them not being allowed in the store.
  • Sweet Tooth: Kim and Vance love candy so much that they'd repeatedly shoplift the candy store to get their fix. Taffy in particular is one of their favorites, and becomes a deal breaker when Kel tries to bribe them with a big bag of candy.
  • Tuckerization: Kim and Vance's names are derived from Kimberly Vance, one of the game's testers.
  • Younger Than They Look: According to Vance, he's only a year older than Kim, but nobody believes him because of his beard.

    Angel
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/angel_battle.png
"Ah! If it isn't KEL and that weird knife guy. Worthy adversaries for the great and mighty ANGEL. Finally, it is time for you to meet your doom!"

A member of the Hooligans. He is the energetic younger brother of the Artist who is always getting into fights.

  • Astonishingly Appropriate Appearance: The guy named "Angel" wears a tank top with wings on it and a yellow clip in his hair that looks like a halo.
  • Blood Knight: He loves picking fights with people just for the sake of fighting, and loves to take on those who are stronger than him.
  • Bratty Half-Pint: Angel is brattier and younger than Kel. He'll pick up a fight against other people.
  • Chuunibyou: He's a "disciple" of "The Maverick", so... what did you expect?
  • Hero-Worshipper: Angel worships "The Maverick" as his master.
  • Monster Compendium: Angel has a book that has three people he already fought, two of which are Kel and Sunny (the "crazy knife guy"). The third is his sister, and he's not even close to beating her.

    The Maverick/Mikhael
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_maverick_battle.png
"And then I told him... it's not MAVERICK. It's THE MAVERICK!"

A showy young man who considers himself the savior of the world and a member of the Hooligans. His Headspace counterpart is Mikal.

  • Black Sheep: Yearns to stand out from his stifling, religious baker family by sporting a yellow wig and acting out as one of the town's delinquents.
  • Comically Lop Sided Rivalry: He labels Kel as his "arch-nemesis", but Kel barely gives him the time of day—and when he does, it typically ends in Mikhael being completely humiliated.
    • It's best shown in an optional sequence after his fight on Three Days Left, in which he challenges Kel to race to a tree and back, despite Kel repeatedly warning him that he's very fast. Sure enough, Mikhael barely makes it halfway to the tree before Kel finishes both laps, and he's completely out of breath by the time he finishes whereas Kel isn't even winded.
  • Chuunibyou: In an attempt to come off as cool, Mikhael goes by an alias, spouts a lot of melodramatic dialogue, pretends that he has special powers, a "final form", and even tries to summon a Spirit Bomb.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Mikhael prefers to be addressed as "the Maverick" instead of his actual name.
  • Fake-Hair Drama: The Maverick wears a blonde wig to look cooler, but it tends to fall off when he panics; he also has a few more different colored ones in his room.
  • Family Business: Mikhael was born and raised in a family of bakers, with his twin siblings running the bakery section of the Othermart Department store. The twins point out that their brother started rejecting bread at the age of 6, but are optimistic that he'll grow to love baking bread again. Mikhael's stance against the family bakery begins to waver on the last day.
  • I Shall Taunt You: One of his attacks consists of mocking a party member, making them Angry.
  • Not-So-Harmless Villain: From his chuunibyou antics and the way that Kel treats him as nothing more than a nuisance, you would expect him to be a pathetic joke in an actual fight, but he proves to be somewhat of a challenge, despite facing off against two people (granted, one of said people is the feeble and anemic Sunny, and Kel, while impressively athletic, trained himself for sports, not combat). His ability to lower your attack also makes him one annoying foe in the Hooligans fight.
  • Paid Harem: Downplayed. The girls that fawn over him on Three Days Left were actually paid to compliment him.
  • Spell My Name with a "The": Mikhael's not "Maverick", he's "The Maverick", as he tells a couple of girls paid to hang out with him.

    Charlene
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/charlene_battle.png
"... Hello... my name is... CHARLENE..."

A young woman who's intimidating in stature but gentle in personality. She's a member of the Hooligans. Her Headspace counterpart is Sharleen.

  • Gentle Giant: Charlie is much bigger than the rest of the group, but she's also the least enthused about fighting Kel and Sunny. When Angel challenges Sunny and Kel to a fight, Charlie just stands around and doesn't lift a finger unless provoked, and even if you do attack her, she will only retaliate with 1 HP of damage despite clearly being able to do more; you only need to knock out Angel to win.
  • Love Letter: One can be found on her desk in her room, but the game never reveals who it's for.
  • Shrinking Violet: Charlie is the least talkative of the group and has a nervous demeanor when she actually does talk.
  • Token Good Teammate: She is the only member of the Hooligans who is not violent in any way, and really just sticks around because they are her friends.

Neighborhood NPCs

Sunny's Street

    Blue-Haired Girl

Cris

"I love everything about the ocean... the beach... the sound of the waves... even the smell of seaweed...
Ah... Hehe... Sorry, I must sound a little obsessed."
Kel's next-door neighbor, a blue-haired girl who can reward Sunny with a seashell necklace should he gather enough seashells.
  • Girl Next Door: She lives next door to Kel and the two are shown to get along very well, praising each other's athletic abilities.
  • Nice Girl: Despite Sunny only being a loose acquaintance to her, she empathizes with him moving away due to her own time at boarding school and decides to make a seashell necklace for him so that he has something to remember Faraway Town by.
  • Water Is Womanly: She has a self-admitted love of the ocean and is heavily associated with it. The 'womanly' aspect is downplayed, however, as she's a competitive swimmer who gets along with Kel through their shared interest in athletics.

    The Baker Twins

Twin and Other Twin / Daphne and Bowen

Daphne: Hmm... Hmm... Our little brother is too cool for us now, isn't he, BOWEN? He doesn't even have time to play games with his loving older siblings anymore!
Bowen: Yes, DAPHNE... It is very... regrettable...
Mikhael's older twin siblings. Their Headspace counterparts are the Unbread Twins.
  • Childish Older Sibling: They're both eccentric Cloud Cuckoolanders with a fixation on playing childish games like hide-and-seek, and very clingy towards their younger brother Mikhael
  • Cloud Cuckoolander: They act far younger than they actually are, attempting to play a bizarre game of hide-and-seek with Mikhael.
  • Creepy Twins: They talk in a monotone and attempt to play hide-and-seek with their (teenage) brother.
  • Tuckerization: Bowen is named after Calum Bowen (a.k.a. bo en), one of the game's composers.

Aubrey's Street

    Gruff Guy
"Hey, stranger! How's your day been? My day's been going just great! Wanna know why? Because today is the that I'm finally going to be fixing the leak in my house!"
A man that keeps visiting the local Fix-It shop in order to deal with a leaky pipe.
  • Amicable Exes: If Sunny visits his house every day, he reveals that he used to be married, but is still on good terms with Kim and Vance, his children.
  • Determinator: He's constantly trying to fix a leaky pipe in his house, only to get frustrated and break something new. But he is determined to keep trying, no matter what. If he's visited every day, Aubrey fixes it for him.

    Checkers Guy and Pigtails Lady

Sean and Karen

Sean: I could go any way too... Don't worry about me! You can choose, KAREN! What color would you like?
Karen: Oh, SEAN! You're too selfless! I don't need to pick a wall color! I'll be happy with anything as long as I'm with you!
A couple that's finally moving in together. However, they're having problems taking the first steps, such as deciding on wallpaper patterns.
  • Sickeningly Sweethearts: The newlyweds flirt a lot, but they realize that their flirting makes it hard to make collective decisions.

Basil's Street

    Artist
"I'm drafting out my next painting, but I'm not sure where to start... It's so hard to come up with good ideas! I should just quit art and become a zookeeper or something."
Angel's overbearing older sister. She's passionate about her art, but tends to ignore others' opinions.
  • Catchphrase: Agreeing to her ideas gives her a burst of motivation, which she always declares with the phrase "INSPIRATION HAS STRIKETH!"
  • Tranquil Fury: The final phase of her sidequest starts with her realizing that Angel's taking too much time to do his errands, and sends the party off to look for him while brewing with anger.

The Other Street

    Creepy Guy

Tucker

"If you are bolstering why I'm so much more pandemic than you are, it's solely due to my philosophy major."
The eldest of Yellow Bun Granny's offspring and Charlene's older brother, he never leaves the house, and spends all of his time in his room.

Others

    Pretty Boy
"Life's been kind of stressful lately, but people-watching out here helps me put things into perspective.
I might make it a habit to come to this park more often... I guess sometimes all it takes to relax is to stop and smell the roses!"
A boy sitting in the park, often spending time with a Jock.

    Jock

Jay

A friend of Kel's who is often seen in the park with Pretty Boy.

    Mincy
"Sometimes when I'm feeling down, it makes me question myself, and it gets hard to move my pencil."
A sketch artist looking to get into art school.
  • Shrinking Violet: She starts out as one, frequently stumbling over her words and expressing low confidence in herself and her art. She starts to grow out of this throughout her sidequest thanks to Kel and Sunny's encouragement, to the point that she eventually becomes comfortable enough to playfully tease Kel over an incident in which he accidentally broke a window in the church.
  • Tuckerization: Directly based on one of the game's artists, Mincy.

    Miss Candice
"Hi-hi! It's me! The happy and cheery MISS CANDICE!
What would you like today? Smiley, smiley!"
The overbearing manager of the Sweets Section of the Othermart Department Store. Her Headspace counterpart is Sweetheart.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Just like her Headspace counterpart, Candice acts sweet and cutesy for the customers, only to verbally abuse her employee, Cute Girl, in front of said customers.
  • Mean Boss: She yells at the Cute Girl for reasons like saying "smile" instead of "smiley".
  • The Perfectionist: She will not tolerate the slightest deviation from the Cute Girl towards how the shop is "supposed" to be run.

    Cute Girl

Curtsey

Curtsey: Welcome! We hope our candy makes you smile!
Miss Candice: I TOLD YOU, CURTSEY! IT'S "SMILEY!" "SMILEY!"
Curtsey: Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-Yes, ma'am! Welcome! We hope our candy makes you smiley!
A cute girl who works at Miss Candice's candy store.
  • Beleaguered Assistant: She spends her screentime getting yelled at by Candice for petty reasons, like accidentally saying "smile" instead of "smiley".

    Bebe/Short-Hair Girl
"Wow... that boy with the blonde wig is so cool... I wish I had his confidence."
A girl that falls in love with Mikhael after watching his fight with Sunny and Kel, admiring his confidence. Her mother is the Fashionable Mom, and her siblings are Brandi (also known as "Intimidating Girl"), and Billy (also known as "Strange Man" and the "Recyclepath").
  • Cannot Spit It Out: Her hesitance to confess to Mikhael keeps her outside of his notice, and sometimes sheer coincidence keeps the two from ever meeting in person.

    Recyclepath and the Recycultists
"We are RECYCULTISTS, followers of the HOLY BIN!
As all have littered, all humans must accept that they are trash!
REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE!"

A cult that's absolutely obsessed with recycling, and their new leader, a cynical, mentally unstable man convinced everything in this world is trash. They serve as an optional antagonist group in the Recycultists HQ, a Bonus Dungeon that can be accessed on One Day Left in Faraway Town.

  • Cult: A comical variant, as they worship recycling and believe that the entire world is trash.
  • Flunky Boss: The Recyclepath fights with two Recycultists flanking him.
  • Harmless Villain: They never really do anything particularly antagonistic beyond attacking Sunny and friends when they intrude into their hideout. They are mainly just weirdos.
  • Malevolent Masked Men: The minions of the cult wear recycle bins as masks.
  • Optional Boss: They're fought in an optional dungeon in the real world.
  • Or Was It a Dream?: It's hard to figure out where truth starts and ends with these guys. The dungeon seems to be purely a daydream of Sunny's, but the Recyclepath is a real person (specifically, Billy, the man sent to buy a floor lamp during one of the sidequests) who did snap and become trash-obsessed in real life (he can be found in Faraway Park even after clearing the Lair and getting a hospital gift from his mom mentions he never returned home), and the Cultists themselves can be seen hanging around the entire game.
  • Straw Nihilist: The Recyclepath expresses his belief that the entire world and everything in it is trash.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Their dungeon seems way out of place for a Real World situation, but none of the party seem to have much commentary on it. That's because it was Sunny daydreaming, as everyone snaps him back to reality and wonder why he was staring off into space so hard.
