    Ojarumaru Sakanoue
A five-year-old prince who lives in the Heian era of Japan, until he finds King Enma's scepter and accidentally ends up in modern-day Japan while running from him. Ojarumaru finds himself quite interested in the modern world and stays in that time period along with his new modern-day friend, Kazuma.

  • Dub Name Change: His official English name is Prince Mackaroo.
  • Fish out of Temporal Water: Rather than go back to his native time period, Ojarumaru is so fascinated by modern-day conveniences that he decides to stay in the present day.
  • Iconic Item: A strange variation, in that while Ojarumaru always carries a pink-colored scepter with him, it's not his, but rather King Enma's. Him stealing the scepter is what starts the plot of the series.
  • Super Drowning Skills: Ojarumaru has a fear of water that prevents him from being able to swim.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Ojarumaru loves pudding.
  • Verbal Tic: He speaks with an archaic dialect used by Heian-era aristocrats. He uses the pronouns "maro" (for himself) and "sochi" (when referring to others). He ends most of his sentences with "de ojaru" (the archaic form of the copula "desu", meaning "to be"), "nou", "ka no", "ja", ja no" "no ja", or "tetamo" (the archaic form of "kudasai", meaning "please").

    Denbo Sanjuro
Ojarumaru's firefly guardian, who also serves as a messenger between Ojarumaru's Heian-era world and the present.

    Kazuma Tamura
An outgoing eight-year-old boy who lives in modern-day Japan and becomes Ojarumaru's friend.

    Kooni Trio
King Enma's three oni children, who are sent to modern-day Japan to retrieve the scepter from Ojarumaru. The trio consists of Aobei, the soft-hearted leader who presents himself as tough; Akane, who typically has a hot temper; and Kisuke, a crybaby who is always mistaken for a chick.

Tropes applying to the trio as a whole
  • Character Signature Song: They have two songs: "Kooni Trio no Theme" (The Little Oni Trio's Theme) note  and "Shaku Kaese!" (Give us the Scepter!), both of which are lighthearted songs that maintain the spirit of their unity. They sing "Kooni Trio no Theme" when walking together, and "Shaku Kaese!" when pressuring Ojarumaru into giving them Enma's scepter.
  • Chromatic Arrangement: Aobei is blue, Akane is red, and Kisuke is yellow.
  • Colorful Theme Naming: The characters' English names reflect their colors - Aobee becomes Blue-Joe, Akane becomes Scarlet, and Kisuke becomes Khakie (like khaki, a pale brown-yellow color).
  • Dub Name Change: In English, the group as a whole is renamed the Scamps, Aobee becomes Blue-Joe, Kisuke becomes Khakie, and Akane becomes Scarlet.
  • Sibling Team: The three oni siblings work together to find and retrieve the scepter Ojarumaru stole from their father.
  • Terrible Trio: They are considered the series antagonists since they chase after Ojarumaru, hoping he will give back King Enma's scepter.

Tropes applying to Aobei

  • Verbal Tic: He usually ends sentences with "de gonsu".

Tropes applying to Akane

  • Oblivious to Love: Green Oni has a crush on Akane, but she doesn't pick up on the attraction.

Tropes applying to Kisuke

  • Character Catchphrase: "Kii-kun isn't a chick, pii!"
  • I Am Not Weasel: Kisuke looks rather like a chick and is often mistaken for one as a result, despite being an oni.
  • Verbal Tic: Him saying "pii" probably does nothing to help how much he resembles a chick.

    Ai Tamura
Kazuma's mother. Mainly a housewife, she has a part-time job at a supermarket.

  • Affectionate Nickname: Called Ai-chan by Ojarumaru and Makoto. In 1st series episode 3 Minna Hajimete Bakari de ojaru, Makoto gets taken aback when Ojarumaru calls Ai that, however, she feels fine with it.
    Ojarumaru: Father, Ai-chan, good morning.
    Makoto: A...Ai-chan?
Ojarumaru: That's what you call her, so isn't that okay?
Ai: [giggles] You can call me Ai-chan.
  • Magical Girl: In 12th series episode 33 Mahou Shufu Ai-chan, she transforms into one by a creature resembling Binbougami.

     Makoto Tamura
Kazuma's father. He is a salaryman.
