Characters / Oh, Suddenly Egyptian God

Go To

This page includes all the characters from Oh, Suddenly Egyptian God.

In general

  • Early-Bird Cameo: A few of the cast appear very briefly in Episode 1 before their proper introductory episodes. Bastet, Horus and Set briefly appear as they're in the radius of the explosion that Medjed caused, while Apep, Khnum and Sa-ta (alongside Otter, who did appear in Episode 1) are shown being blown away by said explosion.
  • Funny Animal: The entire cast of gods (save Medjed) is based on the Egyptian gods with animal appearances.
  • Gold and White Are Divine: The entire cast consists of Egyptian deities, and they all share the same color palette of gold, white and black.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: In Season 2, Episode 6, Anubis, Thoth, Medjed, Bastet and Sa-ta disguise themselves as Apep's chaos. But they retain their physical traits. For example, Anubis has his ears and arms, Thoth his beak, Medjed his white color scheme and semi-realistic eye design, Bastet her ears and heart pendant and Sa-ta her body shape.
  • Physical God: All of them, as deities of Ancient Egypt.
  • Super-Deformed: Unlike their traditional depictions (which are mostly humans with animal heads), the gods in the anime are depicted as short, cute, cartoonish animal characters.
  • With a Friend and a Stranger: Anubis, Thoth and Medjed, the last one being the stranger. They're seen together in almost every scene they're in.

Anubis

Voiced by: Hiro Shimono

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pop_anubis.png

The God of the Dead and mummification, responsible for judging souls to determine their fate.

  • Best Friend: With Thoth. He's almost always accompanying him wherever they go.
  • Judgement of the Dead: One of his duties is to judge souls. He does this with a see-saw.
  • Mummy: Anubis makes these as a hobby on his off days. Though considering the light-hearted nature of the show, the mummies look like miniature dolls or figurines wrapped in bandages rather than shambling corpses.
  • Scales of Justice: Played with. He judges souls by weighing them, but with a see-saw instead of the scales he's traditionally depicted with.

Thoth

Voiced by: Yūki Kaji

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pop_thoth.png

The god of wisdom and knowledge. Acts as the friendly advisor to his colleagues. He also seems to have a secret...

  • Best Friend: With Anubis. They're almost always seen together, with the exception of Episode 6 where he accompanies Horus instead.
  • Improbably High I.Q.: In his own words:
    Thoth: My IQ is infinity!
  • Secret Identity: He has a wand that enables him to transform into a Magical Girl archetype.
  • Secret-Keeper: To Wenet. He might not be around when Wenet helps out the gang's crops during the night, but he figures it out anyway and thanks him for it, while the others are unaware of the truth.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Thoth's favorite food is eggs. He will often request to add eggs to his phone orders of pizza and other foods, and he seems really interested in the idea of eggs cooked in hot springs. His other favorite food is kosharynote .

Medjed

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pop_medjed.png

An obscure and mysterious deity, whose behavior is often unpredictable. He can shoot beams from his eyes, and is often seen accompanying Anubis and Thoth.

  • Bedsheet Ghost: His appearance resembles one.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Despite his odd personality and Cloudcuckoolander tendencies, he is still a Physical God and capable of wrecking extensive destruction to his surroundings with his Eye Beams.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: He has a pretty odd personality, fitting his mysterious nature. He often goes off to do his own thing, such as playing in the snow while everyone else is inside or floating in the sea cooped up in a box.
  • Day in the Life: The latter half of Episode 7 focuses on his daily life. He wakes up, does some morning gymnastics, washes his clothes, then descends down to Earth to do his daily walk around the globe, before returning home to take a bath.
  • Eye Beams: One of his powers. He uses this to kill a scorpion in Episode 1, and later triggers it while cheering for Sa-ta in Episode 12.
  • Limited Wardrobe: The piles of clothes he washes and hangs to dry all consist of the same white cloak that he always wears.
  • Non-Standard Character Design: All the other Egyptian gods in the show look like animals. Medjed on the other hand... has a sheet design with black legs. His eyes are also drawn in a semi-realistic style in comparison of other characters' dot eyes. The Narrator lampshades how much he stands out compared to the other gods especially in the Book of the Dead texts.
  • Person of Mass Destruction: Each time he uses his Eye Beams, he wound up destroying a big chunk of Egypt.
  • Psychopomp: Of sorts. He guards the queue to Anubis' judgement hall, and after the latter's shift is done he takes up the remaining souls who haven't been judged and stores it into himself (under his cloak) for a later date.

Bastet

Voiced by: Yuu Kobayashi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pop_bastet.png

The goddess of cats. She is free-spirited, loves music and dancing, and tends to appear in the most unexpected of places. She also gets easily bored.

  • Allergic to Routine: She gets bored very easily, regularly dropping whatever she does at the moment just because she feels like it, sometimes dozing off afterwards.
  • Cats Are Lazy: The cat goddess is easily bored with everything and sleeps a lot.
  • Furry Reminder: Her first major appearance in an episode is dedicated to showing how she behaves like a cat, including lying down and walking all over Thoth's laptop keyboard.
    • Bastet is also the best at jumping off a swing and sticking the landing out of all the gods who tried it, because cats always land on their feet.
  • Selfie Fiend: Bastet likes to take selfies of herself and post them on Egystagram... although she gets bored with it just as easily.
  • The Unintelligible: Bastet never talks in the show proper, instead speaking only in grunts, screams and Saying Sound Effects Out Loud. She switches to Suddenly Speaking from Episode 5 onwards.

Horus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pop_horus_8.png

The falcon-headed god of the sky, and Set's rival, often fighting with him and falling victim to his pranks. He also does a ton of part-time jobs; he has been seen working at a restaurant as a waiter, cook and deliveryman.

  • I Am Not Weasel: Horus gets visibly upset whenever he's compared to a penguin.
  • Idiot Hair: Horus has a single curled strand of hair sticking out of his head (presumably modeled after the double crown he's often depicted as wearing in Egyptian art), fitting his naive and somewhat clumsy personality.
  • The Klutz: As mentioned above, he is rather clumsy, and as such is often made a target for Set to prank on.
  • Sherlock Homage: Episode 6 has him wear the stereotypical Sherlock Holmes getup, being the hard-boiled detective pursuing the Phantom Thief Set.

Set

Voiced by: Hiroyuki Yoshino

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pop_set.png

The god of destruction, and Horus' rival. He often messes with him by way of pranks.

  • Does Not Like Spam: Contrary to Thoth, he proclaims that he hates eggs.
  • Phantom Thief: Episode 6 has him as one, stealing the Eye of Medjed and trying to escape on a hot air balloon.
  • The Prankster: He often plays practical jokes on Horus.

Ra

Voiced by: Kenjiro Tsuda

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pop_ra.png

The god of the sun, and the father of all the other gods, often traveling abroad away from home.

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: Ra gives every single one of his children head pats after returning home from his journey.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Downplayed, and the other gods still love him, but they don't really appreciate his poor choice in gifts. After dressing up his children in the tacky shirts he bought them, he then goes on to take several photos of them to put on Egystagram.
  • Convenience Store Gift Shopping: While he means well, the gifts that he brings for his children after he returns from his trips invariably turn out to be this.
  • *Crack!* "Oh, My Back!": Ra gets one during his attempt to do a swing jump, causing him to flop to the ground weakly and in pain.
  • Nap-Inducing Speak: He delivers a speech during a party to celebrate the New Year, but the other gods are so bored by it that they ignore him in favor of other activities such as their talent contest and Sa-ta's performance.
  • The Power of the Sun: He is the Ancient Egyptian god of the sun.

Apep

Voiced by: Koji Yusa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pop_apep.png

The serpentine God of Chaos and evil, and Ra's self-proclaimed archenemy.

Sa-ta

Voiced by: Yukari Tamura

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pop_sata.png

A snake goddess who's famous for being everyone's favorite idol.

  • 10-Minute Retirement: She announces her retirement from the idol scene. However, pressure from her thousands of fans causes her to change her mind and go back to being an idol. Apparently this is only the 2752th time this has happened.
  • Famed In-Story: As an Idol Singer with a large fanbase.
  • Idol Singer: The series depicts Sa-ta as this. One with tons of fans, too.
  • Shown Their Work: Ancient Egyptian texts such as the Papyrus of Ani describe the serpent known as "Sata", which was said to have an infinite lifespan of dying and being reborn every single day. The show takes this and adapts it into Sa-ta quitting and returning to the Idol Singer scene over and over, for 2752 times and counting.
  • Snakes Are Sinister: Averted. Unlike her fellow snake deity, Apep, she has a somewhat bubbly and cheerful personality, and her fans really love her.

Khnum

Voiced by: Daisuke Namikawa

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pop_khnum.png

The god of the source of the Nile, and the divine master of pottery.

  • Drill Sergeant Nasty: His method of teaching pottery involves him screaming at his students and working them to the bone, and then having them smash their finished crafts and forcing them to start all over again, repeated over and over. By the end of his episode even he's exhausted by his method.
  • Hot-Blooded: He's highly energetic and passionate for his craft.
  • Large Ham: He shouts nearly every single one of his lines.

Wenet

Voiced by: Shouta Aoi

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pop_wenet.png

The Egyptian hare deity, associated with fertility. He's often asleep during the day.

  • Farm Boy: He's always nearby farmlands, and he is said to be very knowledgeable about farming and rice cultivation. It probably goes hand-in-hand with his powers.
  • Green Thumb: Using his powers, he is able to not only plant rice at amazing speeds, but he can summon rain and cause freshly planted crops to grow overnight.
  • Historical Gender Flip: Wenet in traditional Egyptian myths is a female deity, but in the anime, Wenet is referred to as male, and he has a male voice actor.
  • The Night Owl: He only wakes up during the dead of the night.
  • Righteous Rabbit: A kind rabbit god who helps replanting the gods' crops and growing them in an instant.
  • Sleepy Head: As seen in the show and according to his bio, Wenet often sleeps during the day.

Otter

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pop_ottert.png

A deity in the form of an otter. They often appear out of nowhere to help out the other characters.

  • Ambiguous Gender: It is unclear what gender Otter is.
  • A Dog Named "Dog": An otter deity named Otter.
  • Odd Name Out: They're the only one whose name isn't derived from any Egyptian god.
  • Recurring Extra: Otter sometimes randomly appears in the show, never really talking or interacting with the cast except for helping them out in different ways, such as handing Anubis a phone to order some food or saving Horus from Set's many pranks.
  • Shown Their Work: Their appearance is most likely based on ancient Egyptian statues depicting otters such as this one, thought to be a symbol of the goddess Wadjet (although some speculate that the statue actually depicts a mongoose instead).
  • The Silent Bob: Similar to Sobek, they never speak a word. Whenever they do speak, it's in the form of Talking with Signs (see below).
  • Talking with Signs: The sun disk above their head doubles as a Speech Bubble that is filled with phrases they would've said out loud, or onomatopoeia related to what they're doing.

Sobek

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/pop_sobek.png
Voiced by: Jun'ichi Suwabe (Season 2)

The powerful crocodilian god of the Nile River.

  • Advertised Extra: Sobek is shown in promotional materials for the show alongside the rest of the cast, but he only ever appears throughout the show as a background extra in a couple of episodes, very rarely interacting with the other characters and not having any major role of his own.
  • Recurring Extra: He only appears occasionally, often seen swimming through the waters or just simply being in the background. Unlike Otter, he almost never interacts with the main characters at all.
  • The Speechless: He never talks at all in Season 1. Averted in Season 2, where he will be voiced.
