    Protagonists

Doux

A small child who was created After the End, in an attempt by Zacharie to cure his lonliness.

  • Babies Make Everything Better: Doux's creation helped Zacharie to overcome his looming insanity.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Do not mess with Doux and certainly DO NOT kidnap his Papa!
  • Cheerful Child: In spite of the hardships he has been through, Doux manages to keep a gentle and optimistic demeanour.
  • Companion Cube: Doux carries around a ghost plushie named "Buttons". However, this is subverted as Buttons is quickly revealed to be able to fight alongside Doux.
  • Cowardly Lion: Doux, being only a child, is easily frightened. That does not stop him from charging through Crapsack Worlds in order to find his dad.
  • Cute Bruiser: Doux is such a cute character, but he can easily rip you to shreds in battle.
  • The Cutie: Doux is incredibly cute and sweet. His meows certainly don't help, either.
  • Cutscene Incompetence: Doux can easily hold his own in combat in-game. However, in his own ask blog, he gets swallowed whole by a demon.
  • The Dutiful Son: Doux takes it upon himself to rescue his father.
  • Hope Bringer: Doux is this to so many people:
    • His creation cures Zacharie of his lonliness.
    • He is Blight's only friend, and so gives him a reason to live.
    • His presence in the purified Zones gives hope to the residents that their now corrupted homes can be saved.
  • I Just Want to Have Friends: Doux is both Type A and Type B. Type A, being he becomes fast friends with the original Guardians and residents of the Zones and Type B because there are few living people left in the Zones for Doux to play with, leaving him quite lonely at times.
  • Involuntary Shapeshifting: Doux can turn Burnt, which leads to him becoming physically and mentally unstable. However, all he really needs to do to avoid this is to not let his emotions get the better of him.
  • Kid Hero: Exaggerated, Doux is estimated to be only THREE years old, barely able to read, and yet he is destroying monsters many times his size, all to save his father.
  • Kindhearted Cat Lover: Doux is revealed to love cats in his ask blog.
  • Living Emotional Crutch: Doux was created by Zacharie to cure his lonliness. When Zacharie is kidnapped, Doux searches far and wide to rescue him. He also becomes this to Blight, as he is his only friend.
  • Meaningful Name: "Doux" means "sweet". Also, he is said to be made out of sugar.
  • Nice Guy: Doux is always kind and willing to make friends.
  • Parents in Distress: The whole point of Doux's adventure is to save his father.
  • Prone to Tears: Doux, being only three years old, can be upset quite easily.
  • Save This Person, Save the World: The way Doux feels about his Papa.
  • Sweet Tooth: Doux REALLY likes sugar and anything that tastes like it. Justified, as Doux is said to be made of sugar.
  • Third-Person Person: Justified, since Doux is only a child and doesn't know how to speak properly. He averts this when he gets older, as shown by his ask blog.
  • Trauma Button: Anything that reminds Doux of his father (while he's still kidnapped) will make him cry because he misses him.
  • Truly Single Parent: Doux only has his father, because he alone created him using the Grand Elements.
  • The Unchosen One: Doux manages to re-purify the Zones, taking them back from the new Guardians, all in his quest to save his Papa.
  • Voice Grunting: Doux has a cute little "meow" for normal speech, a chuckle for when he is happy, and an angry "HHHHH!" for when he goes Burnt.

Zacharie

Doux's father, who creates him out of loneliness. When he is kidnapped, it's up to Doux to save him.

  • The Aloner: Zacharie found himself alone when the Batter purified the world. This leads to him creating Doux to escape his lonliness.
  • Action Dad: Downplayed. Zacharie fights to protect his child, but is kidnapped anyway.
  • Cabin Fever: Zacharie is forced to retreat into an abandoned warehouse to escape the monsters that wander the purified Zones. This seems to hurt his sanity even more.
  • Decoy Protagonist: The first few cutscenes make it look like Zacharie is the protagonist, but in reality, his son is the protagonist.
Zacharie: Do not be fooled, however. This is not my story. This is his.
  • Distressed Dude: Zacharie is kidnapped by the monsters that inhabit the purified Zones, and it's up to Doux to save him.
  • Go Mad from the Isolation: Zacharie finds himself suffering from the loneliness of the purified Zones, but ultimately defies this by creating Doux.
  • Truly Single Parent: Zacharie used the Grand Elements to create Doux all by himself.
  • Voice Grunting: Keeps his old voice grunting from the original game.
  • Who Will Take The Kids?: When Zacharie is kidnapped, his main worry is that Doux has been left alone.
  • Your Princess Is in Another Castle!: In-Universe. Every time Doux clears out a zone that he believes his father is in, the Guardian tells him that he is in the next zone. This serves as Dramatic Irony, as the player can quickly infer that Zacharie is, in fact, not in the first three zones.

Blight

A failed clone of Zacharie who starts off as a merchant. He later joins the party.

  • Abusive Parents: Blight suffered torment from his creators because his creation ended in failure.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Blight constantly vomits blood. His mouth has also rotted away and the exposed area seems to bleed.
  • Body Horror: Blight suffers from a lot of this due to his condition.
    • Facial Horror: Blight has a rot scar on the left side of his face, surrounding his mouth.
  • Breath Weapon: Blight has a competence named "Burnt Breath", where he essentially weaponises the toxic smoke he spews due to being a Burnt.
  • Cain and Abel: Blight is Abel to the new Guardians, who are implied to have played a part in his torture.
  • Clone Degeneration: Blight was supposed to be a clone of Zacharie, but it went horribly wrong.
  • Cool Sword: Blight wields a sword he forged himself, with an indent in the blade to gut his enemies.
  • Death Seeker: Blight tries to get Doux to kill him. Thankfully, Doux spares his life, letting him join the party.
  • Diseased Name: Blight named himself according to his situation and condition.
  • Heroic BSoD:
    • Blight's first Heroic BSOD occurs in Zone 2. He confronts Doux in the mall and attacks him, wanting to be killed. Thankfully, however, Doux spares his life and he joins the party.
    • His second Heroic BSOD occurs if you watch all the spectres in Zone 3 commit suicide. He hallucinates, causing him to believe that Doux is a monster and attacks him.
    • His third Heroic BSOD occurs when he reads the Old Papers you obtain at the beginning of the game. He runs off in despair and you have to complete his Nightmare to get him back.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Downplayed. Blight's Verbal Tic is coughing, which is indicative of his condition, but he lives for now...
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Blight has to eat spectres to survive.
  • Lightning Bruiser: Blight is a fairly powerful character, with high HP and decent competences to boot. Even his normal attack can deal decent damage to enemies.
  • Meaningful Name: Blight's name is a reference to his condition, as well as the fact that he failed his creators. This is a name he gave himself.
  • Rapid Aging: Despite being around the same age as Doux, Blight has the body and mind of an adult. Whether this was due to him being Burnt or was done by his creators to make him useful earlier on is up to you to decide.
  • Self-Made Orphan: Downplayed. Blight wants to kill his creators but hasn't killed them yet. Justified, as his creators have been severely corrupted and have abused him all his life.
  • Suicide by Cop: Subverted. Blight attacks Doux in Zone 2's mall, wanting the child to kill him. Doux, however, spares Blight, allowing him to join your party.
  • Trauma Button:
    • Anything that reminds Blight of his creation or imperfections will upset him.
    • Blight does not like talking about his family.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Downplayed. Blight attacks Doux in Zone 2's mall in the hopes that Doux would fight back and kill him. Subverted in Zone 3, when Blight attacks Doux again during a hallucination.
  • Wound That Will Not Heal: Blight's rot scar on his face won't heal. In fact, it just gets worse. And despite being referred to as a "rot scar", it looks a lot like an open wound that bleeds. No amount of Fortune Tickets will make this wound go away.

Viola

Another merchant who sells things to Doux. She appears after Blight has joined the party, as his replacement in the role.

  • A Form You Are Comfortable With: Viola is actually a monster that can take on human form.
  • Black Mage: In the ask blog, Viola reveals that she has a preference for magic.
  • Contrasting Replacement Character: While Blight is rotting and angry, Viola is healthy and rather idealistic.
  • Convenient Replacement Character: Takes over from Blight as merchant after he joined the party. Her reasoning: Blight would try to sell things out of the player's inventory.
  • Foil: To Blight. Blight is rotting away while Viola is completely healthy. Blight is confrontational and ready to fight, but Viola tries to stay away from battles. Blight is dark-skinned with white eyes, Viola is white-skinned with black eyes. Blight is depressed and aloof while Viola is cheery and kind.
  • Minored In Ass Kicking: Viola, in the ask blog, says she tries to avoid conflict. That does not mean she can't put up a real fight.
    Antagonists

Gouette

The new Guardian of Zone 0. He has managed to kidnap Zacharie and him to Zone 4. He has done very little to rebuild his zone.

  • Hero Killer: Downplayed. He kidnaps Zacharie and took over Zone 0
  • Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: Downplayed. Despite being able to kidnap Zacharie, he is the easiest boss in the game and has done little to rebuild his Zone.
  • Sadist: He enjoyed upsetting Doux by teleporting Zacharie to Zone 4.
  • Sucksessor: Is the new Guardian of Zone 0, but is highly incompetent and does nothing to rebuild it.
  • The Load: Chahal describes Gouette to be this, due to his lack of contributions to rebuilding Zone 0.
  • Villains Act, Heroes React: Zig-zagged. While Zacharie does go out of his way to take back Zone 0, it takes his kidnapping by Gouette to really set Doux on his quest.
  • You Are Too Late: When Doux finally confronts Gouette, he teleports Zacharie away to Zone 4. Gouette is still defeated, anyway.

Chahal

The new Guardian of Zone 1. He has taken over Alma and created a new, colourful world. However, he is corrupted and his residents suffer from the cold.

  • An Ice Person: Chahal's new zone is cold and snowy.
  • Crapsaccharine World: Alma is beautiful and snowy, and even Doux admits that he enjoys playing in the snow. However, the residents suffer from the cold and sometimes end up completely frozen.
  • Evil Is Deathly Cold: It can be inferred that Chahal's Zone was rather pleasant, but the cold got worse when Chahal was corrupted.
  • Forced Transformation: Chahal used to have a human form. It is implied that his transformation occured after Blight's failed creation.
  • Sanity Slippage: According to the notes scattered around Alma, Chahal started out as a dutiful Guardian who wanted to surpass Dedan. He was kind and protective of his subjects, before suddenly becoming increasingly hungry and desperate for meat. In his final moments of clarity, he lashes out at his creators, blaming them for the suffering of himself, his fellow Guardians and his people.
