Wally West aka The Kid
For Want Of A Nail, Kid Flash grew up not as Flash's sidekick, but as a thief, stealing money and valuables with his Super-Speed for the thrill. He soon ends up working for the Rogues under the name The Kid.

  • Ambiguously Bi: Wally was stunned at the sight of Artemis' face, but he is the number one source of Ho Yay, and reacts poorly to teasing regarding his sexuality.
  • Anti-Hero/Anti-Villain: Straddles the line between the two.
  • Berserk Button: Any teasing questioning his sexuality with be met with either icy coldness or, in the case of homophobic slurs towards Piper, violence.
    • He was also willing to use his powers and reveal his identity to pummel Captain Boomerang if he laid a finger on Iris.
  • Distressed Dude: It's been less than a year since Wally moved to Central and he has already found himself in several dangerous Rogue-related situations. At this point, Hunter sees him this way.
  • Gentleman Thief: Tries to invoke this, but ends up falling short of suave.
  • Glass Cannon: Unlike Hunter, Wally builds up momentum as he runs and can hit harder. If he were more experienced in fighting, he'd probably be promoted to a Lightning Bruiser like Barry.
  • Gray-and-Gray Morality: Wally leans a bit closer to good, but is still more or less self-serving for the majority of the story.
  • Hit-and-Run Tactics: Wally doesn't know how to fight properly, he usually prefers these kinds of tactics to outright fighting.
  • I Just Want to Be Special: His motivation for gaining powers when he was a child.
  • Intelligence Equals Isolation: Hunter believes that Wally deliberately invokes this.
  • It's Personal: After several run-ins with the Rogues on their territory, Wally's mother gets hurt in an accident caused by the Weather Wizard. Wally takes it as a personal attack and goes after them in retribution before realizing the truth.
  • Loveable Rogue
  • Non-Action Guy: To everyone unaware of his pastime.
  • Nothing Exciting Ever Happens Here: Nothing ever happened in Blue Valley. It's one of the reasons Wally doggedly tested and tested and tried to figure out the Flash formula until he succeeded. Because he spent more time figuring it out compared to in the show, Hunter beat him to the punch getting powers and becoming the Flash's sidekick.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man
  • Sticky Fingers
  • Teen Genius: A chemistry prodigy. Recreated the Flash formula at thirteen without the need to be hospitalized.
  • Token Good Teammate: He and Piper play this to the Rogues.
  • Triple Shifter: Made somewhat easier by the nature of his powers.
  • Used to Be More Social: Before he came to Central, and even more so before he got his powers.
  • Villain Protagonist: Wally may not actively fight the heroes, but he's still a criminal.
  • Waistcoat of Style: It's a part of Wally's urban disguise, but he also just wears it out of general vanity. It gets upgraded later.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Played with. Prestory, Wally's dad had a slightly distant but mostly normal relationship with Wally. When Wally receives his superpowers, he inadvertently drives a wedge between him and his father, so years later after Rudy calls him, Wally's eager to try and reestablish a relationship with him. Wham Episode It doesn't work.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: The plot of the story more or less revolves around the results of Wally's misbehavior and his attempts to make amends that usually involve him resorting to even more criminal acts.

Hunter Zolomon aka Zoom
For Want Of A Nail, the villainously insane Zoom never became a villain and instead was taken in by The Flash as his sidekick. Studies and analyzes criminals for a living, with a particular hatred for the Rogues and their newest member The Kid. Despite the natural conflict between their two pastimes, Hunter and Wally soon become close friends.

  • Ambiguously Brown
  • A Tragedy of Impulsiveness: A frequent result of Hunter’s power is that it makes him reckless and prone to "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot moments.
  • Berserk Button: Anything to do with criminals or Roy will put him on a rampage.
  • Fights Like a Normal: Hunter doesn't have much control over his time-manipulating powers, so he only uses it to affect his own movement. He doesn't have the advantages of things like super speed or strength and has to train to fight like Artemis and Robin.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: Hunter is extremely prone to this, and has trouble realizing it sometimes.
Roy: "The guy had a frequent case of foot-in-mouth syndrome, and while his powers were the generally accepted source of his more reckless remarks, sometimes Roy was convinced he was just emotionally stupid."
  • Fragile Speedster: Ironically, Hunter isn't a speedster, but since he can use his ability to manipulate time, he can outstrip the Kid (and potentially Barry, too) but his durability is still on the level of a normal human.
  • Foster Kid
  • Good Is Not Nice: Just because he's on the heroes' side doesn't mean he'll be pleasant.
  • Happily Adopted: Hunter was never officially adopted by the Allens or Garricks, but he’s incredibly close to both couples and is a part of the Flash family.
  • Hero Antagonist
  • Horrible Judge of Character: Pretty ironic, considering his occupation.
  • Knight Templar: His lack of tolerance and violence towards criminals is putting him close to this category.
  • Loves My Alter Ego: Hunter likes Wally, but hates the Kid.
  • Not So Stoic: Hunter initially comes off as a bit stiff when he's first introduced, but he's one of the more impulsive and emotional members of the team.
  • The Profiler: Constructs detailed psychological profiles and predicts behavior with incredible accuracy with only the bare minimum of information.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Zoom's eyes glow red when using his powers. Somewhat averted, as Zoom is a superhero, but not exactly a great one. If his eyes turn red, it's probably because someone is about to get their butt kicked.
  • The Rival: To The Kid.
  • Steven Ulysses Perhero: Lampshaded by Wally.
"Hunter Zolomon. Zoom. Cute. Not at all a dead giveaway."
  • Sympathetic Inspector Antagonist: Hunter ruthlessly hunts after The Kid.
  • Time Master: A fairly watered down version. Hunter can only slow down time for himself and the area immediately around him, giving the illusion of Super-Speed.
  • Throwing Off the Disability: When he uses his powers, Hunter can sometimes feel "out of sync" with his body, and the dissociation means sometimes he can ignore or forget his own injuries. When he broke his leg, he frequently forgot his crutches, delaying his recovery.
  • Unwitting Pawn: To Wally at times.
